Predictors of Resilience in Prelicensure Nursing Faculty

BACKGROUND

Nursing faculty vacancies reduce the numbers of students entering the nursing profession, exacerbating the health care workforce crisis. Resilience, known to mitigate occupational burnout, may play a role in retaining existing prelicensure nursing faculty (PNF), a population that has not been extensively studied.

PURPOSE

We examined compassion satisfaction (CS), perceived support (PS), and associated demographic factors of resilience among PNF.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study used a secondary data analysis of survey responses from 499 PNF. Multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to identify significant predictors of resilience.

RESULTS

Multivariate analysis revealed CS and PS were significant predictors of resilience when controlling for age, with CS being the strongest predictor in the regression model.

CONCLUSIONS

This study highlights the importance of CS and PS in fostering resilience among PNF. Understanding these factors can guide academic institutions in developing interventions to retain nursing faculty, thereby addressing the broader nursing shortage.

Resilience in Nursing Faculty: An Integrative Review

The current documented nursing faculty shortage is an important factor affecting our ability to address the nationwide nursing shortage. Occupational burnout is a common phenomenon among nurses that may negatively impact retention of nursing faculty. While research suggests that promoting resilience moderates occupational burnout and relates to occupational satisfaction in practicing nurses, very few investigations have examined resilience among nursing faculty. The purpose of this integrative review is to describe the current state of the science on resilience in nursing faculty and includes an analysis of 14 studies. Three major foci were identified in the literature: 1) descriptions of resilience levels in nursing faculty, 2) examinations of resilience based upon demographic factors, and 3) resilience and related concepts. Existing research indicates there may be demographic differences in resilience levels of nursing faculty, but additional investigation is necessary to confirm these relationships. There is evidence that quality of life (QOL), components of QOL, and support are correlated with resilience in nursing faculty but more rigorous research on these relationships is needed. Understanding more about the relationship between resilience, demographics, and associated factors will guide future development and choice of interventions tailored to promote resilience among nursing faculty.

Career capital, career success, and perceived employability: evidence from medical billing companies in the post-COVID world

BACKGROUND

This paper focuses on the concept of career construction based on the theory of conservation of resources to understand the overall effect of career capital on career success from both a subjective and objective manner through the mediating effect of perceived employability.

OBJECTIVE

This study attempts to explain how different integrated aspects of career capital, including human, social, and psychological (antecedents), influence both subjective career success and objective career success (outcome) through the mediating effect of perceived employability (mediator).

METHODS

Time-lagged data of 331 employees from the telehealth medical billing service companies based in Pakistan were analyzed through a structural equation modeling technique using SmartPLS software.

RESULTS

The main results confirmed that career capital positively affects perceived employability and career success while perceived employability positively mediates the relationship between career capital and career success.

CONCLUSION

This research responded to prior calls by explaining the positive mediating role of perceived employability (as a mediator) in explaining the positive influence of career capital on career success using different various dimensions of career capital and career success. This research included the contextual issues by testing the model in the telehealth sector of Pakistan. The findings suggested that context or occupation matters in the relationship between career capital and career success.

Career resilience of the tourism and hospitality workforce in the COVID-19: The protection motivation theory perspective

By applying the protection motivation theory, the study aims to investigate factors influencing tourism and hospitality (T&H) workers' career resilience when faced with health-related risks at work during a pandemic. Data were collected from 495 part-time and full-time employees in the Vietnamese tourism and hospitality sector. The study found that workers' perceived vulnerability and perceived severity of the pandemic were positively associated with career resilience. Perceived severity was positively related to self-efficacy and response efficacy, while perceived vulnerability was positively associated with self-efficacy only. Both self-efficacy and response efficacy positively influenced career resilience through the mediating role of health risk preventative behavior. Theoretically, the study advances the stream of research in resilience in general and career resilience in particular among T&H workers when faced with a health-related crisis. Practical implications are provided with recommendations on how to facilitate career resilience among T&H employees working in the current high-risk environment.

Nurse Educator Perceptions of Workplace Collegiality

BACKGROUND

The nursing faculty shortage challenges nursing educators, administrators, and staff to find innovative ways to understand and address faculty retention.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to examine nurse educators' perceptions of workplace collegiality and the possible correlation to role satisfaction and role persistence.

METHODS

Participants (n = 177) were recruited nationally from a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredited schools listing. Three survey instruments were utilized: Survey of Collegial Communication, Job Satisfaction Survey, and Michigan Organizational Assessment Questionnaire.

RESULTS

The study found a positive relationship between collegiality and job satisfaction in academia. The Pearson correlation results indicated there was a significant negative correlation between the intent to remain and collegiality.

CONCLUSION

The findings suggest nursing educators perceive collegiality as an important component of job satisfaction and intent to remain.

A qualitative study exploring the career mindset of a group of early career academic nurses as they deployed 'Habits of Mind' to sustain their career journey

AIM

This study aimed to explore the qualities that sustain a career mindset in a group of early career academics in one Australian university.

BACKGROUND

Building an academic career is a lengthy, convoluted and complex journey requiring a mindset prepared to make informed and timely decisions. Success is predicated to a large extent on the ability of persons to process information effectively before actions are taken. Employing 'Habits of Mind' supports growth in intelligent behaviours through acquiring a composite of skills, attitudes, cues and past experiences that maximises appropriate choice of one pattern of thinking over another. A level of skill is required to employ 'Habits of Mind', suggesting that reflection and evaluation of experiences are critical to the process. In this, the third phase of a four-phase sequential study, the career mindset of a group of early career academic nurses were studied during 2019. A cluster of 'Habits of Mind' emerged as having value for an academic career mindset, allowing the individuals to meet challenges of negotiating a career terrain and deepening their learning about those situations. Time and energy could therefore be appropriated to engage with the academic global community in new and career challenging health related research.

DESIGN

A qualitative descriptive approach.

METHODS

The study applied the epistemology and constructivist thinking of John Dewey and the self-directed learning theories of Mezirow and Knowles. Set in a large metropolitan university in Sydney, Australia. A purposive sample of nine early career academic nurses were interviewed using semi-structured, one-to-one audio-taped interviews. Data were analysed thematically using Braun and Clarke (2006) six phase process.

RESULTS

Findings revealed that deployment of the cluster of the five distinctive themes or 'Habits of Mind': Rely on self; take responsible risks; think with colleagues; keep an open mind and possess curiosity into the novice nurses' mindset, expedited self-directed learning processes, resulting in sharpening of their learning power to enable a more productive career journey.

CONCLUSIONS

It is argued that 'Habits of Minds' can provide a valuable learning framework when directing a career mindset and, that inclusion by providers of leadership, career or mentorship programs can sustain an academic environment where a culture of learning can flourish and where ECANs are equipped with attributes and behaviours necessary to address global demands.
