Nurse educator knowledge, attitude and skills towards using high-fidelity simulation: A study in the vocational education sector

An Integrative Review of Response Rates in Nursing Research Utilizing Online Surveys

BACKGROUND

Online surveys in nursing research have both advantages and disadvantages. Reaching a sample and attaining an appropriate response rate is an ongoing challenge and necessitates careful consideration when designing a nursing research study using an online survey approach.

OBJECTIVE

In this study, we aimed to explore response rates and survey characteristics of studies by nurse researchers that used online methodologies to survey nurses, nursing students, and nursing faculty.

METHODS

We conducted an integrative review of research studies that used online surveys for data collection published from 2011 to 2021. We examined response rates and survey characteristics such as recruitment method, use of incentives, question type, length of survey, time to complete the survey, and use of reminders.

RESULTS

Our review included 51 studies published by nurses with target samples of nurses, nursing students, or nursing faculty. Study sample sizes ranged from 48 to 29,283, the number of respondents ranged from 29 to 3,607, and the response rates ranged from 3.4% to 98%, with an average of 42.46%. Few patterns emerged regarding recruitment or other factors to enhance response rates; only five studies used incentives.

CONCLUSION

Response rates to online surveys are unlikely to reach the rates seen in older mailed surveys. Researchers need to design online survey studies to be easily accessible, concise, and appealing to participants.

A survey of knowledge and practice of simulation among health tutors in selected health training institutions

AIM

The aim of the study was to describe the knowledge and practice of simulation among health tutors with a view to promoting the use of simulation in health training institutions in the Northern and Upper East Regions of Ghana.

DESIGN

The study was quantitative research that utilized a descriptive cross-sectional survey to describe the knowledge and practice of simulation in teaching.

METHODS

A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 138 health tutors who were enumerated through the census for the study. The return rate was 87%, representing 120 health tutors who finally completed the study. The data were presented by means of descriptive statistics.

RESULTS

The findings of the study revealed that few participants had adequate knowledge of simulation. The study also found that a slight majority of the participants practiced simulation in teaching. The study further found that there was a positive correlation between health tutors' knowledge and the practice of simulation. Indicating that an increase in the health tutors' knowledge of simulation is associated with an increase in their practice of simulation.

Nursing faculty perceptions of simulation culture readiness in Saudi universities: a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Academic programs are increasing simulation-based learning in Saudi Arabia during COVID-19 pandemic; however, there is limited knowledge about these universities' simulation culture readiness. Thus, the purpose of this study was to explore faculty perceptions of the readiness to integrate simulation into nursing programs.

METHODS

This cross-sectional correlational study recruited faculty members in four nursing colleges at Saudi universities using the simulation culture organizational readiness survey 36-item questionnaire. A total of 88 faculty members from four Saudi universities were included. Descriptive, Pearson's correlation, independent sample t-test, and analysis of covariance analysis were utilized in this study.

RESULTS

Nearly 39.8% and 38.6% of the participants had Moderately and Very Much overall readiness for the simulation-based education (SBE), respectively. There were significant correlations between the summary impression on simulation culture readiness measures and simulation culture organizational readiness survey subscales (p < 0.001). Three simulation culture organizational readiness survey subscales (defined need and support for change, readiness for culture change, and time, personnel, and resource readiness) and the overall readiness for SBE were correlated with age, years since highest degree, years of experience in academia, and years using simulation in teaching (p < 0.05). The sustainability practices to embed culture subscale and summary impression were only correlated significantly with the number of years using simulation in teaching (p = 0.016 and 0.022, respectively). Females had a significantly higher mean in the sustainability practices to embed culture subscale (p = 0.006) and the overall readiness for simulation-based education (p = 0.05). Furthermore, there were significant differences among the highest degree in the overall readiness for SBE (p = 0.026), summary impression (p = 0.001), the defined need and support subscale (p = 0.05), the sustainability practices to embed culture subscale (p = 0.029), and the time, personnel, and resource readiness subscale (p = 0.015).

CONCLUSIONS

Favorable simulation culture readiness results suggest great opportunities to advance clinical competencies in academic curricula and optimize educational outcomes. Nurse academic leaders should identify needs and resources to enhance simulation readiness and encourage the integration of simulation in nursing education.

Changes to teaching and learning about medication administration within a diploma of nursing course due to the Covid-19 pandemic: A staff and student multi-method evaluation

AIM

This project aimed to evaluate student and staff satisfaction with, and perspectives on, changes to delivery and format of the Medication Unit of Competency within a Diploma of Nursing Program.

BACKGROUND

Medication safety is an integral component of learning for pre-registration nursing students. The COVID-19 pandemic required rapid changes to be made to the medication competency unit being taught to students within a Diploma of Nursing, pre-registration course. Changes to sequencing of theory, mode of education delivery, class sizes, available resources and learning support were required.

DESIGN

A multi-method evaluation process was conducted. The project is reported as per SQUIRE-EDU guidelines.

METHODS

Focus groups and survey data were obtained from staff and students in December 2020, to evaluate responses to the changes. Student exam results and the number of learning support consultations accessed were also assessed to identify impact of changes.

RESULTS

Staff and student evaluation identified mixed responses but overall, the change in sequence of theory and mode of delivery was positively received. Crude comparisons of final assessment results revealed improved marks compared to the previous cohort. The addition of an online medication resource was utilised by most students. The agility of staff in responding to the challenges was highlighted in the staff focus group and additional, flexible learning support was favourably received by students.

CONCLUSIONS

Despite the need for rapid changes being made to the course, positive responses were received from both staff and students. Some students preferred the traditional sequencing of learning as they felt it matched their learning style. An added online resource and extra learning support supported student self-efficacy development of medication competency; however further research is needed to ascertain any associations. The online resource is still being utilised within course curriculum.

An investigation of knowledge, attitude and practice towards simulation among clinical nursing teachers in China: A cross-sectional study

AIM

This study aimed to investigate the knowledge, attitude and practice towards simulation among CNTs in China and analyze the influencing factors.

BACKGROUND

In China, simulation is now increasingly used by Clinical Nursing Teachers (CNTs) who are mainly responsible for nurses' continuing education, novice nurses training and nursing students practice in clinical settings. Over the past 20 years, enrolment scale of nursing education was expanded greatly, and the number of registered nurses increased from 1.22 to 4.10 million in China. To contribute to nurses' or nursing students' professional development and successful transition to competent practitioners, CNTs are now being challenged to use simulation to develop more learner-centered educational programs, which could better facilitate learner engagement. As faculty preparation is a prerequisite for conducting quality simulation, it is critical that CNTs have the requisite knowledge and skills to use simulation to its full potential. However, data on CNTs' knowledge, attitude and practice towards simulation is limited.

DESIGN

A cross-sectional study.

METHODS

A total of 342 CNTs from six tertiary affiliated teaching hospitals of a medical university in Beijing, China, participated in the study. Electronic questionnaire of Nurse Educators' Knowledge, Attitude and Practice towards Simulation (NEKAPS) was delivered to CNTs. Analysis of variance, t-test were used to analyze data.

RESULTS

The mean score of knowledge and attitude for all participants was 60.01 ± 13.42 and 81.40 ± 19.99, respectively. The mean practice score was 70.65 ± 22.05 for 162 participants (47.4 %) who had conducted simulation in their hospitals. Participants with higher educational level (F=3.476, p = 0.032) and nursing career length≤ 15 years (t = 2.676, p = 0.008) had higher knowledge scores. However, there were no significant differences among different groups for attitudes. Participants with age ≤ 35 years old (t = 3.355, p = 0.001), nursing teaching length ≤ 10 years (t = 2.073, p = 0.041) and advanced beginner nurses (t = 3.212, p = 0.002) presented higher practice scores.

CONCLUSIONS

CNTs had a low level of knowledge on simulation. Their attitudes towards simulation were positive, whereas their practices were still lacking. It is highlighted an urgent need for standardized training of CNTs to improve their knowledge and practice towards simulation, so that they can optimize the simulation programs they provide for nurses or nursing students.

Vocational education phenomena research method

The vocational education implementation is one of the success factors for government to improve the quality of human resources, mainly toward producing skilled workers. Various researchers have studied the phenomena of vocational education. Unfortunately, studies on research methods in relation to vocational education phenomena are limited. Hence, this paper examined the research methods on the phenomena of vocational education, based on few case studies in Indonesia. Indonesia has many challenges as such Indonesia is a country with the fourth highest population globally, high level of unemployment, relatively rapid growth of new autonomy, and most number of islands in the world. In fact, Indonesia has different characteristics and needs of human resources from each region.•
