Pre-registration nursing and occupational therapy students' experience of interprofessional simulation training designed to develop communication and team-work skills: A mixed methods study

Over twenty years of pedagogical research from Nurse Education in Practice: A bibliometric analysis from 2001 to 2023

AIM

To present a bibliometric overview of pedagogical research from Nurse Education in Practice from its inception in 2001 up until 2023.

BACKGROUND

Bibliometric methods are useful in analysing and understanding the characteristics of scientific publications in a particular field and the influence of specific journals. However, no bibliometric analysis of a nurse education journal has been undertaken to date which would highlight important research trends in this area of nursing and midwifery.

METHODS

A total of 2231 publications (articles and reviews only) from Nursing Education in Practice were retrieved from the Scopus database between 2001 and 2023. Several software applications including Microsoft Excel and VOSviewer were used to undertake bibliometric analysis on this dataset. Publication trends such as country analysis, author analysis, keywords analyses (cluster, content and trend analysis) were generated to help understand the volume and scope of pedagogical nursing and midwifery research in this journal.

RESULTS

There has been a steady increase in pedagogical research from Nurse Education in Practice since its launch in 2001 up until 2018, with a dip in publications in 2022 most likely due to the impact of restrictions during the coronavirus pandemic. The most prolific institutions publishing in the journal are mainly from the United Kingdom, Australia and the United States, with over eighty countries represented demonstrating its global reach and impact. Nursing students, nursing education, simulation and learning are some of the most frequent author keywords.

CONCLUSION

The diversity of pedagogies in nursing and midwifery education, clinical learning and supervision in practice environments, and competence and confidence when transitioning to practice are the most popular research areas in Nurse Education in Practice. This study informs nurse and midwife educators and scholars about the volume and scope of pedagogical research in nursing and midwifery. It also makes recommendations on how to improve aspects of scholarship in education and areas for future pedagogical research.

Identifying and Mapping Canadian Dietetic Students' Interaction(s) with Simulation-Based Education: A Scoping Review

This scoping review mapped literature available on Canadian dietetics, nutrition, and foods students' and graduates' interaction(s) with simulation-based education (SBE) during undergraduate and/or practicum. One certified Librarian led the preliminary search (Summer, 2021), while three Joanna Briggs Institute-trained reviewers conducted the comprehensive search via MEDLINE (OVID), CINAHL (EBSCO), Academic Search Premier (EBSCO), Embase (Elsevier), Scopus (Elsevier), and Google (February 2022). A data extraction tool designed specifically for the study objectives and research inclusion criteria was used. We recorded 354 results and included 7. Seven types of SBE were recorded: (i) comprehensive care plan (n = 2); (ii) nutritional diagnosis/assessment (n = 2); (iii) body composition assessment (n = 1); (iv) introducing patient to dysphagia care (n = 1); (v) nutrition counselling session (n = 1); (vi) nutrition-focused physical examination (n = 1); and (vii) professional communications via social media (n = 1). Results indicate that Canadian dietitian-led SBE includes the use of simulated patients, nutritional diagnosis/assessment, and the creation of comprehensive care plans, among others. Students have been assessed for performance of trained tasks through exams, self-awareness surveys, and interviews, and SBE activities have been evaluated for effectiveness through questionnaires and interviews with users/students. Canadian literature is limited, and more can be learned by exploring the global context within and outside the profession.

FITRI's four steps in developing primary health cares' interprofessional collaborative: an intervention for fostering IPCP competencies

It is important to fill the gaps in collaborative practice due to the lack of the healthcare professionals' ability to work in collaboration with other disciplines. However, the current team training does not routinely address this important issue. This study aimed to identify how interactive interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) learning materials in a virtual course and community implementation called FITRI's four steps in developing primary health cares' interprofessional collaborative practice can be used in primary healthcare settings to address IPCP competencies of healthcare providers. This research was a quasi-experimental study with an untreated control group design using a dependent pretest and posttest sample. A purposive sample of 50 primary healthcare providers consisting of general physicians, dentists, nurses, dietitians, and pharmacists were nonrandomly divided into the control and intervention groups. This study showed that IPCP competencies measured by the Interprofessional Collaborator Assessment Rubric (ICAR) in the intervention group were significantly higher after the training and implementation than before. The Mann-Whitney tests indicated that IPCP competencies were better in the intervention group than the control group. Based on effect size analysis, the intervention had a very strong impact and could significantly improve the participants' competencies, especially in the collaborative patient/client-family centered approach domain. The FITRI's four steps in developing primary health cares' interprofessional collaborative practice can be implemented and provide positive impacts in primary healthcare settings to improve and foster competencies of IPCP in primary healthcare.

Effectiveness of interprofessional simulation-based education programs to improve teamwork and communication for students in the healthcare profession: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

BACKGROUND

Factors, such as the dynamic and variable structure of healthcare services, the introduction of new care models and technological developments, and requirements for patient safety, quality, and accreditation, require new content, goals, and models in the education and practice of health disciplines. Curriculum studies should be planned by today's requirements and competencies to be gained in interprofessional simulation-based education.

OBJECTIVES

This systematic review and meta-analysis study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of interprofessional simulation-based education programs for improving teamwork and communication among students in the healthcare profession.

METHODS

In this study, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Springer Link, Science Direct, Ovid, PubMed, Scopus, ProQuest, EBSCOhost/CINAHL Complete, and MEDLINE databases were searched without year limitations until April 2022. Two independent researchers reviewed the studies and analyzed the data. Two researchers evaluated the methodological quality of the studies using the Cochrane Collaboration tool (RoB 2.0). This study was prepared in line with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) statement. Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA) 3 software was used for meta-analysis.

RESULTS

Eight randomized controlled trials conducted with 819 participants were included in this study. The evaluation of meta-analysis data showed that interprofessional simulation-based education programs significantly improved teamwork (Hedge's g = 0.41, p < 0.001, 95 % CI = 0.25 to 0.56) and communication (Hedge's g = 0.54, p < 0.001, 95 % CI = 0.26 to 0.82). The results of the sensitivity analysis showed that teamwork and communication were stable.

CONCLUSION

Interprofessional simulation-based education programs seem to be an appropriate method for improving teamwork and communication among healthcare students. In the future, it is thought that there is a need to individualize interprofessional simulation-based education programs based on cultural differences and socio-demographic characteristics of healthcare students and to plan studies that examine long-term results.
