Abstract
Undernutrition is characterized by an imbalance of essential nutrients with an insufficient nutritional intake, a disorder in which the clinical manifestations in most cases are the result of the economic and social context in which the individual lives. In 1990, the study by the medical and humanitarian Naíde Teodósio (1915-2005) and coworkers, which formulated the Regional Basic Diet (RBD) model for inducing undernutrition, was published. This diet model took its origin from the observation of the dietary habits of families that inhabited impoverished areas from the Pernambuco State. RBD mimics an undernutrition framework that extends not only to the Brazilian population, but to populations in different regions worldwide. The studies based on RBD-induced deficiencies provide a better understanding of the impact of undernutrition on the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the most diverse prevalent diseases. Indexed papers that are analyzed in this review focus on the importance of using RBD in different areas of knowledge. These papers reflect a new paradigm in translational medicine: they show how the study of pathology using the RBD model in animals over the past 30 years has and still can help scientists today, shedding light on the mechanisms of prevalent diseases that affect impoverished populations.

Abstract
A deficiência de nutrientes durante os períodos críticos do desenvolvimento tem sido associada com maior risco para desenvolver obesidade e diabetes Mellitus na vida adulta. Um dos mecanismos propostos refere-se à regulação do comportamento alimentar e às alterações do metabolismo energético do músculo esquelético. Recentemente, tem sido proposta a existência de uma comunicação entre o hipotálamo e o músculo esquelético a partir de sinais autonômicos que podem explicar as repercussões da desnutrição perinatal. Assim, esta revisão tem como objetivo discutir as repercussões da desnutrição perinatal sobre o comportamento alimentar e o metabolismo energético muscular e a comunicação existente entre o hipotálamo e o músculo via sinais adrenérgicos. Foram utilizadas as bases de dados MedLine/PubMed, Lilacs e Bireme, com publicações entre 2000 e 2011. Os termos de indexação utilizados foram: feeding behavior, energy metabolism, protein malnutrition, developmental plasticity, skeletal muscle e autonomic nervous system. Concluiu-se que a desnutrição perinatal pode atuar no controle hipotalâmico do comportamento alimentar e no metabolismo energético muscular, e a comunicação hipotálamo-músculo pode favorecer o desenvolvimento de obesidade e comorbidades durante o desenvolvimento.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We review the main adverse effects of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the mammalian organism, introducing the reader on the worldwide problem of the ROS neurophysiological impact on the developing and the adult brain, and discussing the neuroprotective action of antioxidant molecules. METHODS We briefly present the electrophysiological phenomenon designated as 'cortical spreading depression' (CSD), as a parameter of normal brain functioning. We highlight recent electrophysiological advances obtained in experimental studies from our laboratory and from others, showing how to investigate the ROS effects on the brain by using the CSD phenomenon. RESULTS Under conditions such as aging, ROS production by photo-activation of dye molecules and ethanol consumption, we describe the effects, on CSD, of treating animals with (1) antioxidants and (2) with antioxidant-deficient diets. DISCUSSION The current understanding of how ROS affect brain electrophysiological activity and the possible interaction between these ROS effects and those effects of altered nutritional status of the organism are discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ethanol (EtOH) abuse and insufficient ingestion of antioxidants are external factors that can alter brain electrophysiology. Our previous studies have demonstrated that the excitability-related brain electrophysiological phenomenon known as cortical spreading depression (CSD) was facilitated by chronic EtOH intake, and chronic treatment with carotenoids attenuated this effect. Here, we investigated the acute effect of a single EtOH administration on CSD in young and adult rats previously (1 hour) treated with 10 μg/kg of astaxanthin. METHODS Male Wistar rats (5 young- and 5 adult groups, 60 to 80 and 150 to 180 days of age, respectively) were treated by 2 gavage procedures at 1-hour interval as follows: groups 1 and 2 received astaxanthin in gavage I combined with EtOH (group 1) or water (group 2) in gavage II; groups 3 and 4 received olive oil (the vehicle in which astaxanthin was dissolved) in gavage I combined with EtOH (group 3) or water (group 4) in gavage II; group 5 received water in gavage I combined with EtOH in gavage II. CSD was recorded on the cortical surface for 4 hours. RESULTS Compared to the respective water and oil controls (groups 2 and 4; CSD velocities: 3.73 ± 0.09 and 3.78 ± 0.07 mm/min in the young groups; 2.99 ± 0.10 and 3.05 ± 0.19 mm/min in the adult groups), a single dose of EtOH (groups 3 and 5) decreased CSD propagation velocities (3.29 ± 0.23 and 3.16 ± 0.10 mm/min in the young groups; 2.71 ± 0.27 and 2.75 ± 0.31 mm/min in the adult groups). Astaxanthin antagonized the impairing effect of acute EtOH on CSD (group 1; mean velocity: 3.70 ± 0.19 and 3.13 ± 0.16 mm/min for the young and adult groups, respectively). CONCLUSIONS The results showed an antagonistic effect of acute EtOH treatment on CSD propagation that was reverted by astaxanthin. The EtOH-astaxanthin interaction was not influenced by the age, as it was found in both young and adult animals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We investigated the effect of early-in-life administration of L-arginine, combined with physical exercise, on cortical spreading depression (CSD) in young and adult rats. METHODS L-arginine (300 mg/kg/day, n = 40) or distilled water (vehicle, n = 40) was given to the rats during postnatal days 7-35 by gavage. Physical exercise (treadmill) was carried out during postnatal days 15-35 in half of the animals in each gavage condition described above. The other half (non-exercised) was used for comparison. When the animals reached 35-45 days (young groups) or 90-120 days of age (adult) CSD was recorded on two cortical points during 4 hours and CSD propagation velocity was calculated. RESULTS L-arginine-treated + exercised rats had increased body weight, but not brain weight, in adult age compared to L-arginine + non-exercised ones (P < 0.05). In both young and adult animals, L-arginine increased, whereas exercise decreased the CSD propagation velocity. Analysis of variance revealed a significant interaction between gavage treatment and age (P < 0.001), and also between gavage treatment and exercise (P = 0.004), but not between age and exercise. An additional control group of young rats, treated with 300 mg/kg of L-histidine, presented CSD velocities comparable to the corresponding water-treated controls, suggesting that the CSD acceleration seen in the L-arginine group was an L-arginine-specific effect, rather than an effect due to a non-specific amino acid imbalance. DISCUSSION L-arginine and exercise affect CSD differentially (L-arginine accelerated, while exercise decelerated CSD), and both effects did interact. Probably, they depend on developmental plasticity changes associated with the treatments.

Abstract
Spreading depression (SD) consists of a transient significant suppression of the spontaneous neural electrical activity that spreads slowly across regions of the gray matter in a wave form. Nowadays, this phenomenon is being studied by means of mathematical and computational models to reproduce the main characteristics of SD. Given the high number of parameters and their unknown ranges of variation, the setting of parameters for current SD models is usually a hard task that must be addressed in order to make such models reproduce real data. In this paper, we present a 1-D model which is able to reproduce the most important characteristics of SD waves observed in laboratory experiments: the slow extracellular potential shift and extracellular ionic concentration variations regarding speed, shape, and amplitude. Such a reproduction is possible due to a methodology that we introduced to set the parameters of the SD models. The methodology allows the impact of each parameter on the results produced by the model and the range of parameters for which the model displays plausible behavior to be determined. The methodology also helps to identify features that the model cannot produce and it gives insights about what parts of the model should be modified to improve its capacities through the identification of parameters involved with each behavior.

Abstract
In this chapter we review the current understanding of how hormones, neurohormones, and neurotransmitters participate in the pain modulation of primary headaches. Stressful conditions and hormones intimately implicated in headache neurobiology are also discussed. With the recent progress in neuroimaging techniques and the development of animal models to study headache mechanisms, the physiopathology of several of the primary headaches is starting to be better understood. Various clinical characteristics of the primary headaches, such as pain, autonomic disturbances, and behavioral changes, are linked to hypothalamic brainstem activation and hormonal influence. Headache is greatly influenced by the circadian circle. Over the millennia the nervous system has evolved to meet changing environmental conditions, including the light-dark cycle, in order to ensure survival and reproduction. The main elements for synchronization between internal biological events and the external environment are the pineal gland and its main secretory product, melatonin. Melatonin is believed to be a significant element in migraine and in other headache disorders, which has implications for treatment. A potential therapeutic use of melatonin has been considered in several headache syndromes. In short, primary headaches are strongly influenced by physiological hormonal fluctuations, when nociceptive and non-nociceptive pathways are differentially activated to modulate the perception of pain.

Abstract
Existe considerável evidência para a indução de diferentes fenótipos em reposta às variações no ambiente fetal e neonatal. O aporte inadequado de nutrientes no período crítico do desenvolvimento está associado ao risco alto de doenças metabólicas na vida adulta, este fenômeno biológico é chamado de programação. A atividade física durante a gestação resulta em adaptações fisiológicas da mãe e no aumento da disponibilidade de nutrientes e oxigênio no espaço feto-placentário. Este trabalho tem como objetivo discutir os mecanismos da indução de programação fetal pela nutrição e o provável efeito modulador da atividade física durante a gestação. Foram utilizadas as bases de dados do Medline Pubmed, Lilacs e Bireme, com publicações entre 1990 até 2008. Os termos de indexação utilizados foram: nutrition, fetal programming, gestation, physical activity, physical exercise, metabolism. Em conclusão, o aporte inadequado de nutrientes programa o aparecimento de doenças metabólicas na vida adulta, enquanto que a atividade física durante a gestação aumenta a disponibilidade de nutrientes e oxigênio, repercutindo positivamente no crescimento fetal e no peso ao nascer.

Abstract
SUMMARY Brain excitability diseases like epilepsy constitute one factor that influences brain electrophysiological features. Cortical spreading depression (CSD) is a phenomenon that can be altered by changes in brain excitability. CSD propagation was presently characterized in adult male and female rats from a normal Wistar strain and from a genetically audiogenic seizure-prone strain, the Wistar audiogenic rat (WAR), both previously submitted (RAS(+)), or not (RAS(-)), to repetitive acoustic stimulation, to provoke audiogenic kindling in the WAR-strain. A gender-specific change in CSD-propagation was found. Compared to seizure-resistant animals, in the RAS(-) condition, male and female WARs, respectively, presented CSD-propagation impairment and facilitation, characterized, respectively, by lower and higher propagation velocities (P<0.05). In contraposition, in the RAS(+) condition, male and female WARs displayed, respectively, higher and lower CSD-propagation rates, as compared to the corresponding controls. In some Wistar and WAR females, we determined estrous cycle status on the day of the CSD-recording as being either estrous or diestrous; no cycle-phase-related differences in CSD-propagation velocities were detected. In contrast to other epilepsy models, such as Status Epilepticus induced by pilocarpine, despite the CSD-velocity reduction, in no case was CSD propagation blocked in WARs. The results suggest a gender-related, estrous cycle-phase-independent modification in the CSD-susceptibility of WAR rats, both in the RAS(+) and RAS(-) situation.

Abstract
The ketogenic diet (KD) is a high fat and low carbohydrate and protein diet. It is used in the clinical treatment of epilepsy, in order to decrease cerebral excitability. KD is usually composed by long-chain triglycerides (LCT) while medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) diet is beginning to be used in some clinical treatment of disorders of pyruvate carboxylase enzyme and long-chain fatty acid oxidation. Our study aimed to analyze the effects of medium- and long-chain KD on cerebral electrical activity, analyzing the propagation of the phenomenon of cortical spreading depression (CSD). Three groups of weaned rats (21 days old) received, for 7 weeks, either a control (AIN-93G diet), or a MCT-KD (rich in triheptanoin oil), or a LCT-KD (rich in soybean oil). They were compared to another three groups (21 days old) receiving the same diets for just 10 days. CSD propagation was evaluated just after ending the dietary treatments. Results showed that short-term KD treatment resulted in a significant reduction of the CSD velocity of propagation (control group: 4.02+/-1.04mm/min; MCT-KD: 0.81+/-1.46mm/min and LCT-KD: 2.26+/-0.41mm/min) compared to the control group. However, long-term treatment with both KDs had no effect on the CSD velocity (control group: 3.10+/-0.41mm/min, MCT-KD: 2.91+/-1.62mm/min, LCT-KD: 3.02+/-2.26mm/min) suggesting that both short-term KDs have a positive effect in decreasing brain cerebral excitability in young animals. These data show for the first time that triheptanoin has an effect on central nervous system.
