Abstract
BACKGROUND Balance is an essential skill for dancers, it helps reduce the risk of injury, and is related to quality of performance. This systematic review aims to investigate the effects of training protocols on the balance of dancers when compared to control groups. METHODS Interventional studies, published until January 2023, assessing balance in all levels of ballet, modern, and contemporary dancers were identified in the PubMed, Cochrane, Lilacs, Scielo, Embase, and SPORTDiscus databases. Publications in English, Spanish and Portuguese were considered. In two selection phases, using a standard protocol, two reviewers independently selected and extracted the data. The Downs & Black checklist was used to assess risk of bias. RESULTS Of the nine intervention studies included, most were classified as either "fair" or "poor" quality. Three-hundred and seventy-two dancers aged 9.6 ± 0.5 to 25.7 ± 3.7 years were analysed. The majority was female (94%), with the years of experience of ballet (35%) or ballet and modern (49%) training ranging from 4.6 ± 1.4 to 12.0 ± 7.5 years. Numerous training protocols of varying durations were found. However, neuromuscular training proved the most effective at improving balance. CONCLUSION Most of the studies are classified poor quality. Future studies should consider interventions lasting at least four weeks, two to three times a week, sessions between 30 and 60 min. More high-quality studies, randomized control trials using validated balance tests, as well as new validation studies for dance-specific balance tests are needed.

Abstract
Falls and fall-induced injuries are common and consequential in older adults. Ballet emphasizes full-body coordination, leg strength, and postural control. However, it remains unknown whether ballet can indeed reduce falls in older adults. This study examined biomechanical and neuromuscular responses of older recreational ballet dancers to an unexpected standing-slip. Twenty older ballet dancers (17 females, 3 males) and 23 age- and sex-matched nondancers (19 females, 4 males) were exposed to an unexpected slip during treadmill standing. The slip-faller rate was the primary outcome. The secondary outcomes were kinematic measurements, including dynamic gait stability, slip distance, and recovery stepping performance (step latency, duration, length, and speed). The tertiary outcome was the electromyography latency of leg muscles (bilateral tibialis anterior, medial gastrocnemius, rectus femoris, and biceps femoris). Fewer dancers fell than nondancers after the standing-slip (45% vs. 83%, P = 0.005, d = 0.970). Dancers displayed better stability at recovery foot liftoff (P = 0.006) and touchdown (P = 0.012), a shorter step latency (P = 0.020), shorter step duration (P = 0.011), faster step speed (P = 0.032), and shorter slip distance (P = 0.015) than nondancers. They also exhibited shorter latencies than nondancers for the standing leg rectus femoris (P = 0.028) and tibialis anterior (P = 0.002), and the stepping leg biceps femoris (P = 0.031), tibialis anterior (P = 0.017), and medial gastrocnemius (P = 0.030). The results suggest that older ballet dancers experience a lower fall risk and are more stable than nondancers following an unexpected standing-slip. The greater stability among dancers could be attributed to more biomechanically effective recovery stepping, possibly associated with the ballet-induced neuromuscular benefit-an earlier leg muscle activation.NEW & NOTEWORTHY This is the first study to examine how older ballet dancers respond to an unexpected external slip perturbation while standing. The results suggest that older ballet dancers experience a reduced fall risk after the slip than their nondancer counterparts. The lower fall risk can be accounted for by dancers' quicker neuromuscular reactions to the slip that result in a more effective recovery step and thus higher stability against backward falls due to the slip.

Abstract
Elite dance requires highly controlled balance performance in dynamic visual and auditory environments characterized by the use of stage lighting and music. Perturbing visual input is known to influence balance in dancers, but the effects of sounds have not been clearly established. Ankle inversion injuries are common in dancers and may also play a role in dancers' ability to respond to sensory perturbations. The aims of this study were to identify changes in static balance in response to visual or auditory perturbation in elite collegiate dancers with and without a history of ankle injury, and to describe coupling of measurements obtained from the waist and head during balance. Thirty-seven dancers: 22 controls and 15 with a history of ankle sprain, performed single-leg balance under static and dynamic visual and auditory conditions. Dancers demonstrated increased waist sway when viewing a dynamic visual scene and when presented with moving sounds and increased head sway with dynamic visuals. These results did not vary by history of ankle sprain. While dancers appear to dampen the impact of waist sway on head motion during single leg stance, even highly trained dancers may experience challenges controlling balance under perturbing visual and auditory conditions like those present during stage performance.

Abstract
Although interventional studies have suggested that dance-based training may reduce fall risk for older adults based on unperturbed assessments, it remains unknown whether dance (particularly ballet) enhances recovery from an external perturbation. This preliminary study sought to test if and how ballet dancers respond differently to a novel standing-slip perturbation relative to non-dancers. Ten young professional ballet dancers and 10 age/sex-matched non-dancers were exposed to an unannounced slip while standing on the treadmill. Their reactions to the slip, characterized by dynamic gait stability (primary outcome), and the recovery stepping and trunk movements (secondary outcomes), were compared between groups. No significant group difference in dynamic gait stability was found at slip onset and recovery step liftoff, but dancers were more stable than non-dancers at touchdown (p = 0.046). Compared to non-dancers, dancers took a longer (p = 0.049) and faster (p = 0.007) backward recovery step and exhibited a less backward leaned trunk at all instants (p ≤ 0.026). Our study suggests that professional ballet dancers are more stable after a novel standing-slip than non-dancers. This better slip-related fall resistance among dancers could result from their more effective recovery stepping strategy and better trunk movement control after the slip. Both reactions may be attributed to ballet training, which requires frequent backward stepping and an upright trunk. Our findings could potentially provide preliminary evidence for applying ballet training to reduce balance losses and falls in people at a high fall risk. More studies are needed to examine ballet training's effects among other populations with elevated fall risk in real-life situations.

Abstract
Dance movement requires excessive, repetitive range of motion (ROM) at the foot-ankle complex, possibly contributing to the high rate of injury among dancers. However, we know little about foot biomechanics during dance movements. Researchers are using three-dimensional (3D) motion capture systems to study the in vivo kinematics of joint segments more frequently in dance-medicine research, warranting a literature review and quality assessment evaluation. The purpose of this literature review was to identify and evaluate studies that used 3D motion capture to analyze in vivo biomechanics of the foot and ankle for a cohort of dancers during dance-specific movement. Three databases (PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, CINAHL) were accessed along with hand searches of dance-specific journals to identify relevant articles through March 2020. Using specific selection criteria, 25 studies were identified. Fifteen studies used single-segment biomechanical foot models originally created to study gait, four used a novel two-segment model, and six utilized a multi-seg- ment foot model. Nine of the studies referenced common and frequently published gait marker sets and four used a dance-specific biomechanical model with purposefully designed foot segments to analyze the dancers' foot and ankle. Description of the biomechanical models varied, reducing the reproducibility of the models and protocols. Investigators concluded that there is little evidence that the extreme total, segmental, and inter-segmental foot and ankle ROM exerted by dancers are being evaluated during dance-specific movements using 3D motion capture. Findings suggest that 3D motion capture is a robust measurement tool that has the capability to assist researchers in evaluating the in vivo, inter-segmental motion of the foot and ankle to potentially discover many of the remaining significant factors predisposing dancers to injury. The literature review synthesis is presented with recommendations for consideration when evaluating results from studies that utilized a 3D biomechanical foot model to evaluate dance-specific movement.

Abstract
This study aimed to determine if there is a difference in postural stability in highly trained adolescents and young adult athletes regarding sex and sport. The participants were young athletes (n = 464) from seven different sports. We considered the center of pressure (CoP) velocity (total, anterior–posterior (AP) and medial–lateral (ML)), CoP amplitude (AP and ML), and CoP frequency (AP and ML), as assessed by single-leg quiet stance test. Significant interactions were found between sex and sport for all CoP variables (p < 0.02). Additionally, a significant main effect of sport was also found in all CoP variables (p = 0.01). Regarding sex, significant effects were found for all CoP amplitude variables (p = 0.01), as well as for CoP velocity variables, except for CoP ML (p = 0.06). Moreover, there was no sex effect for CoP frequency AP (p = 0.18). The results of the current study confirm the claim that the criteria for optimal postural strategies for elite athletes likely depend on a given sport.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to assess the differences in maintaining body balance (influence of different sensorial sub-systems) in a representative sample of active Dance Sport competitors (children and adults). METHODS Overall, 13 children and 15 high-level adults sport dancers underwent a static equilibrium test on a force platform, in which 17 different parameters were examined, including a spectral analysis of shifts using an FFT algorithm that can assess the contribution of different somatic-sensory systems on maintaining body balance. RESULTS Younger subjects rely on their somatic-sensory reactions to maintain their balance, while adults rely more on the vestibular system, according to shifts' spectral analysis. No differences were noted between the male and female participants. CONCLUSIONS Children predominantly use the somatic-sensory system in body balance, while adults make more use of the vestibular system. According to these results and due to the trainability phases, exercises that challenge the somato-sensorial system are recommended to train balance in young dancers, while exercises that challenge the vestibular system are recommended in adult dancers which who have not developed exceptional somato-sensory balance abilities during their growth and training history.

Abstract
Introduction
Knowledge about the positive effects that music and dance bring, in its various forms, to the healthy human brain, is important not only in the context of basic neuroscience but may also strongly affect practices in neurorehabilitation.
Objective
To verify the relationship between hearing and movement and, specifically, to analyze the interference of professional dance practice and formal musical training in the magnitude of the vestibule-cervical and vestibular reflexes.
Method
The sample consisted of 92 subjects, aged between 18 and 35 years old, 31 professional musicians, 31 ballet dancers, and 30 control subjects. Only subjects with normal hearing sensitivity were included. Cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP) was recorded in the sternocleidomastoid muscle, and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential (oVEMP) was recorded in the lower oblique muscle of the eye, using tone-bursts (500Hz). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) or Kruskall-Wallis tests were performed.
Results
The cVEMP presented earlier and higher amplitude waves when recorded in the group of dancers, with a significant difference between all tested groups for latency and amplitude of the N23 wave; the comparison was restricted between dancers and control groups, with no difference between ballet dancers and musicians. The N1 wave of the oVEMP presented lower latencies in dancers than in musicians and controls (
p
= 0.001). No significant differences were found between the groups for the P1 wave.
Conclusion
Greater magnitudes of vestibule-cervical reflex responses and faster vestibule-ocular reflex responses were observed in dancers. Dance practice provides greater development of the vestibular system, but musical training also contributes to the magnitude of these responses.

Abstract
Balance testing on dancers has used a wide variety of assessment tools. However, as most field balance tests have been developed for either sport or elderly populations, the evidence of associations between tests and their functional relevance to dance is inconclusive. We assessed possible associations between five such field balance tests . A total of 83 female undergraduate dance students (20 ± 1.5 years; 163 ± 6.6 cm; 61 ± 10.8 kg) volunteered for the tests. They executed the Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT), the modified Romberg test, the Airplane test, the BioSway Balance System (Biodex, Shirley, New York, USA), and a dance-specific pirouette test. Spearman's correlation coefficients examined relationships between the measures of the balance tests. Results showed strongest relationships between some SEBT reach directions (p < 0.01) and very weak to moderate relationships between some balance tests, including some SEBT directions, Romberg, Airplane, Biosway, and pirouette (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05). Our findings suggest that current tests used to assess dancers' postural stability need further investigation to ensure functionality and relevance.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to compare the static balance of dancers and non-dancers in a bipedal and unipedal stance. Twenty-three female dancers (mean age: 21.3 ± 1.7) and 24 age and sex-matched subjects (mean age 22.3 ± 1.0) participated in this study. A force platform was used to assess balance. The tests on the balance platform were performed in several positions with different foot placement, such as normal standing (NS) eyes open and eyes closed positions, semi-tandem position (ST), tandem position (TP), and one-leg standing (1L) eyes open and eyes closed position. Significant differences in balance between the dancers and the control group, especially in the tandem position and one-leg standing position with eyes closed were found. We observed higher results for the velocity of the COP in the frontal plane in the TP with a dominant limb in front (p = 0.04) and higher results for the velocity of the COP in the frontal plane (p = 0.01) and in the sagittal plane (p < 0.01) in the TP with a dominant limb in front in the control group. We also observed significant differences between groups in the mean velocity of COP sway in the sagittal plane in the 1 L position with eyes closed (p = 0.04). We concluded that dancing regularly for several years improves static balance.

Professional dancers demonstrate an amazing ability to control their balance. However, little is known about how they coordinate their body segments for such superior control. In this study, we investigated how dancers coordinate body segments when a physical perturbation is given to their body. A custom-made machine was used to provide a short pulling impulse at the waist in the anterior direction to ten dancers and ten non-dancers. We used Uncontrolled Manifold analysis to quantify the variability in the task-relevant space and task-irrelevant space within the multi-dimensional space made up of individual segments’ centers of mass with a velocity adjustment. The dancers demonstrated greater utilization of redundant degrees of freedom (DoFs) supported by the greater task-irrelevant variability as compared to non-dancers. These findings suggest that long-term specialized dance training can improve the central nervous system’s ability to utilize the redundant DoFs in the whole-body system.

Abstract
This study proposes a generalization of the ankle and hip postural strategies to be applied to the large class of skills that share the same basic challenge of defeating the destabilizing effect of gravity on the basis of the same neuromotor control organization, adapted and specialized to a variable number of degrees of freedom, different body parts, different muscles and different sensory feedback channels. In all the cases, we can identify two crucial elements (the CoP, centre of pressure and the CoM, centre of mass) and the central point of the paper is that most balancing skills can be framed in the CoP-CoM interplay and can be modelled as a combination/alternation of two basic stabilization strategies: the standard well-investigated COPS (or CoP stabilization strategy, the default option), where the CoM is the controlled variable and the CoP is the control variable, and the less investigated COMS (or CoM stabilization strategy), where CoP and CoM must exchange their role because the range of motion of the CoP is strongly constrained by environmental conditions. The paper focuses on the tightrope balancing skill where sway control in the sagittal plane is modelled in terms of the COPS while the more challenging sway in the coronal plane is modelled in terms of the COMS, with the support of a suitable balance pole. Both stabilization strategies are implemented as state-space intermittent, delayed feedback controllers, independent of each other. Extensive simulations support the degree of plausibility, generality and robustness of the proposed approach.

Abstract
Both visual and body-based (vestibular and proprioceptive) information contribute to spatial updating, or the way a navigator keeps track of self-position during movement. Research has tested the relative contributions of these sources of information and found mixed results, with some studies demonstrating the importance of body-based information, especially for translation, and some demonstrating the sufficiency of visual information. Here, we invoke an individual differences approach to test whether some individuals may be more dependent on certain types of information compared to others. Movement experts tend to be dependent on motor processes in small-scale spatial tasks, which can help or hurt performance, but it is unknown if this effect extends into large-scale spatial tasks like spatial updating. In the current study, expert dancers and non-dancers completed a virtual reality point-to-origin task with three locomotion methods that varied the availability of body-based and visual information for translation: walking, joystick, and teleporting. We predicted decrements in performance in both groups as self-motion information was reduced, and that dancers would show a larger cost. Surprisingly, both dancers and non-dancers performed with equal accuracy in walking and joystick and were impaired in teleporting, with no large differences between groups. We found slower response times for both groups with reductions in self-motion information, and minimal evidence for a larger cost for dancers. While we did not see strong dance effects, more participation in spatial activities related to decreased angular error. Together, the results suggest a flexibility in reliance on visual or body-based information for translation in spatial updating that generalizes across dancers and non-dancers, but significant decrements associated with removing both of these sources of information.

Abstract
Ballet dancers have a higher risk than the general population of ankle sprains. Ankle proprioception is of the utmost importance for executing static and dynamic positions typical of ballet dancing. Ankle sprains can create changes in functional ability that may affect ballet performance. The aim of this cross-sectional observational study is to evaluate if non-professional ballet dancers that were previously injured with a grade II ankle sprain carry a long-term stability deficit in ballet specific positions (passé, arabesque) and in single-leg flat-foot stance, thereby affecting ballet performance. We enrolled 22 amateur female ballet dancers, 11 who previously had a grade II ankle injury and 11 who had no history of ankle injury. Stabilometric data (Center of Pressure Speed and Elipse Area) were assessed with the postural electronic multisensory baropodometer in normal, arabesque, and passè positions with both open and closed eyes. Using an unpaired t-test, we compared healthy and pathological feet of the ankle injury group for a standard monopodalic position and two ballet-specific positions. No difference between pathological and healthy feet of non-professional ballet dancers who suffered grade II ankle injury was detected. According to the parameters considered in this study, grade II ankle sprains seem to have a favorable prognosis in the sample that we evaluated.

Abstract
Ankle sprain is the most commonly diagnosed injury experienced by ballet dancers with few studies investigating preventive support measures such as Kinesio taping. The need exists to examine the mechanical support characteristics of Kinesio taping and effect of application on ankle motion and performance. This may be important to understanding the mechanical mechanisms attributed to Kinesio ankle taping and justify its use in the prevention and treatment of jump landing injuries in ballet dancers. This study compared Kinesio taping with and without tension and no tape (control) on active and passive measures of ankle complex motion in healthy ballet dancers. A secondary objective was to examine the effect of Kinesio taping on balance using time to stabilization. Participants performed three ballet jumps with single-leg landings on a force plate across three ankle support conditions consisting of Kinesio taping, sham-Kinesio taping, and no tape. Sagittal and frontal plane motion and load-displacement of the ankle complex for each support condition were obtained using an ankle arthrometer. Kinesio taping with tension significantly restricted inversion-eversion rotation and increased inversion stiffness of the ankle complex (p < 0.05). No significant differences were found among the three ankle support conditions for jump landing time to stabilization (p > 0.05). Arthrometric results indicate Kinesio taping significantly restricted ankle complex motion in the frontal plane that is associated with lateral ankle sprain. Objective information on the nature of Kinesio taping support can assist sports medicine practitioners when recommending ankle support to athletes.

Abstract
It has been demonstrated that expertise in sport influences standing balance ability. However, little is known concerning how physical contact in sport affects balance ability. The aim of this study was to examine whether differences between contact and limited-contact sport experiences results in differences in postural control. Twenty male collegiate athletes (10 soccer/contact, 10 baseball/limited contact) and ten male untrained students stood quietly on a force plate under various bipedal and unipedal conditions, with and without vision. Significant differences for sway area and COP speed were found between the soccer players and the other two groups for unipedal stances without vision. Soccer players were found to have superior postural control compared with participants involved in limited contact sport or no sport at all. Contact sports may lead to increased postural control through enhanced use of proprioceptive and vestibular information.

Abstract
RESEARCH QUESTION The purpose of this study was to examine the postural sway characteristics of the ballet dance experts in quiet standing and at their limits of stability with an approach not used before in dancers. METHODS The study was conducted on thirteen female ballet dancers and thirteen non-training females. The data were collected with a use of a force plate. To gain a better insight into the postural control processes, we used the rambling-trembling and sample entropy analyses in the COP data processing. RESULTS The main findings of the study showed professional dancers to have higher values of postural sway characteristics in comparison to the non-trainees while performing simple motor tasks. Also, higher values of the trembling component in the group of dancers during quiet standing and the inclined positions were observed. This might be a sign of higher capacity of the postural system to deal with postural instability in dancers. IMPORTANCE Our results confirmed that the visual information is important in the process of postural control of dancers', which is proven by increased dislocations of the COP without visual feedback. The sample entropy results indicated more irregular characteristics of postural sway in ballet dancers representing more automated postural control. The data analysis methods showed high sensitivity to the subtle changes in postural control due to the dance training.

Abstract
PURPOSE To analyse dynamic postural strategies during the "grand plié" in two different foot positions (parallel or turned out), with and without vision, and as a function of age in ballet dancers. METHOD Twenty young dancers (YD) aged from 8 to 16 years, and 20 adult dancers (AD) aged from 17 to 30 years were recruited. Center of pressure (CoP) and ground reaction forces (GRF) were recorded (500 Hz) during the grand plié (lowering, squatting and rising). This movement was tested with the feet parallel and with both lower limbs turned out (foot angle >140°), with eyes open (EO) and eyes closed (EC). Groups were compared using Student t-tests. Repeated analysis of variance was used to examine the effects of eyes and foot conditions, with a significance level of p < 0.05. RESULTS The results of this study showed that dynamic postural strategies during the "grand plié" ballet movement are influenced by age, foot position and visual condition. CoP displacement length (p < 0.003) and CoP speed (p < 0.003) were higher in YD compared with AD. CoP surface (p < 0.05), mediolateral CoP speed (p < 0.048) and GRF parameters, particularly the mediolateral (p < 0.049), were higher than in the parallel than the turned out position. In both groups all CoP (p < 0.042) and GRF parameters (p < 0.049), except the vertical component, were higher with EC than EO. CONCLUSION The effect of foot position was greatest with EO. The parallel position was less stable. The YD were more unstable in the parallel position, particularly with EC. For both groups, the lack of vision increased instability. These results show the importance of integrating balance training in a variety of foot positions and visual conditions, particularly during the initial stages of training to prevent injury.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to estimate the effect of altitude (1500m vs. 3200m) on balance strategies, and to determine the influence of age (> or <40 years) and expertise (> or <20days of mountain climbing/year) on postural stability at altitude. METHOD Eighty-nine volunteer mountaineers were tested at 1500m, 3200m immediately after exiting the cable car and at 3200m following the climb and return. Double-leg stance with eyes closed and single-leg stance with eyes open were tested. The center of pressure (CoP) was recorded for 12.8s using a stabilometric force platform. Length, surface, ratio (length/surface), and average speed of the CoP, as well as lower limb loading were calculated. Groups and altitudes were compared using ANOVA. Significance was set to p<0.05. RESULTS CoP ratio was significantly higher during both balance conditions at 3200m compared to 1500m (p<0.05). Lower limb loading was symmetrical at 1500m but not at 3200m (p<0.05). There was no influence of age or expertise at 1500m (p=NS), however at 3200m, older subjects and subjects with less expertise had greater length and surface of the CoP, showing more instability (p<0.05). CONCLUSION Postural stability was immediately reduced on arrival at 3200m, particularly in subjects above the age of 40 years with less expertise.

Abstract
Postural control is not a fully automatic process, but requires a certain level of attention, particularly as the difficulty of the postural task increases. This study aimed at testing whether experienced contemporary dancers, because of their specialized training involving the control of posture/balance, would present with a dual-task performance suggesting lesser attentional demands associated with dynamic postural control compared with non-dancers. Twenty dancers and 16 non-dancers performed a dynamic postural tracking task in both antero-posterior and side-to-side directions, while standing on a force platform. The postural task was performed, in turn, 1) as a stand-alone task, and concurrently with both 2) a simple reaction time task and 3) a choice reaction time task. Postural control performance was estimated through variables calculated from centre of pressure movements. Although no overall group difference was found in reaction time values, we found a better ability to control the side to side movements of the centre of pressure during the tracking task in dancers compared with non-dancers, which was dependent on the secondary task. This suggests that such increased ability is influenced by available attentional resources.

Abstract
Central or postural set theory suggests that the central nervous system uses short term, trial to trial adaptation associated with repeated exposure to a perturbation in order to improve postural responses and stability. It is not known if longer-term prior experiences requiring challenging balance control carryover as long-term adaptations that influence ability to react in response to novel stimuli. The purpose of this study was to determine if individuals who had long-term exposure to balance instability, such as those who train on specific skills that demand balance control, will have improved ability to adapt to complex continuous multidirectional perturbations. Healthy adults from three groups: 1) experienced maritime workers (n = 14), 2) novice individuals with no experience working in maritime environments (n = 12) and 3) individuals with training in dance (n = 13) participated in the study. All participants performed a stationary standing task while being exposed to five 6 degree of freedom motions designed to mimic the motions of a ship at sea. The balance reactions (change-in-support (CS) event occurrences and characteristics) were compared between groups. Results indicate dancers demonstrated significantly fewer CS events than novices during the first trial, but did not perform as well as those with offshore experience. Linear trend analyses revealed that short-term adaptation across all five trials was dependent on the nature of participant experience, with dancers achieving postural stability earlier than novices, but later than those with offshore experience. These results suggest that long term previous experiences also have a significant influence on the neural control of posture and balance in the development of compensatory responses.

Abstract
Neurorehabilitation programs are commonly employed with the goal to help restore functionality in patients. However, many of these therapies report only having a small impact. In response to the need for more effective and innovative approaches, rehabilitative methods that take advantage of the neuroplastic properties of the brain have been used to aid with both physical and cognitive impairments. Following this path of reasoning, there has been a particular interest in the use of physical exercise as well as musical related activities. Although such therapies demonstrate potential, they also have limitations that may affect their use, calling for further exploration. Here, we propose dance as a potential parallel to physical and music therapies. Dance may be able to aid with both physical and cognitive impairments, particularly due to it combined nature of including both physical and cognitive stimulation. Not only does it incorporate physical and motor skill related activities, but it can also engage various cognitive functions such as perception, emotion, and memory, all while done in an enriched environment. Other more practical benefits, such as promoting adherence due to being enjoyable, are also discussed, along with the current literature on the application of dance as an intervention tool, as well as future directions required to evaluate the potential of dance as an alternative therapy in neurorehabilitation.

Abstract
Background In literature there is a general consensus that the use of the mirror improves proprioception. During rehabilitation the mirror is an important instrument to improve stability. In some sports, such as dancing, mirrors are widely used during training. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the use of a mirror on balance in young dancers. Sixty-four young dancers (ranging from 9–10 years) were included in this study. Thirty-two attending lessons with a mirror (mirror- group) were compared to 32 young dancers that attended the same lessons without a mirror (non-mirror group). Balance was evaluated by BESS (Balance Error Scoring System), which consists of three stances (double limb, single limb, and tandem) on two surfaces (firm and foam). The errors were assessed at each stance and summed to create the two subtotal scores (firm and foam surface) and the final total score (BESS). The BESS was performed at recruitment (T0) and after 6 months of dance lessons (T1). Results The repeated measures ANOVA analysis showed that for the BESS total score there is a difference due to the time (F = 3.86; p < 0.05). No other differences due to the group or to the time of measurement were found (p > 0.05). The analysis of the multiple regression model showed the influence of the values at T0 for every BESS items and the dominance of limb for stability on an unstable surface standing on one or two legs. Conclusions These preliminary results suggest that the use of a mirror in a ballet classroom does not improve balance acquisition of the dancer. On the other hand, improvement found after 6 months confirms that at the age of the dancers studied motor skills and balance can easily be trained and improved.

Abstract
A dança envolve integração de movimento, equilíbrio postural e aspectos relacionados ao controle postural. Informações sobre o equilíbrio em bailarinos são de grande importância, pois eles são considerados modelos de controle postural. O objetivo foi revisar estudos sobre equilíbrio postural estático e dinâmico em bailarinos, caracterizando o controle e a dependência visual desses atletas para a manutenção do equilíbrio. Para isso, foi realizada uma revisão nas bases de dados PubMed, SciELO, Lilacs e Science Direct, considerando o período entre 1997 a 2013, utilizando os descritores equilíbrio, controle postural, plataforma de forças, ballet, bailarinos clássicos e aferência visual. Foram selecionados 18 artigos capazes de fornecer dados quantitativos para avaliação do equilíbrio nesses atletas classificados pelo nível de evidência científica Oxford. A literatura revisada mostra completa concordância quanto ao efeito da retirada da informação visual sobre a estabilidade postural de bailarinos considerados como executantes altamente treinados. Estudos mostrando a comparação do equilíbrio de bailarinos com outras técnicas desportivas confirmaram um padrão específico de equilíbrio nesses indivíduos. Entretanto, associando-se à restrição visual, bailarinos apresentaram maior deslocamento do centro de pressão comparado a outras modalidades desportivas, sugerindo maior dependência visual para a manutenção do equilíbrio. Bailarinos apresentam menor oscilação postural em relação a indivíduos não treinados e indivíduos treinados em outras práticas desportivas, com maior dependência visual para manutenção do equilíbrio.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to describe the effects of lower limb positioning and shoe conditions on stability levels of selected single leg ballet poses performed in demi-pointe position. Fourteen female non-professional ballet dancers (mean age of 18.4±2.8 years and mean body mass index of 21.5±2.8kg/m(2)) who had practiced ballet for at least seven years, without any musculoskeletal impairment volunteered to participate in this study. A capacitive pressure platform allowed for the assessment of center of pressure variables related to the execution of three single leg ballet poses in demi pointé position: attitude devant, attitude derriére, and attitude a la second. Peak pressures, contact areas, COP oscillation areas, anterior-posterior and medio-lateral COP oscillations and velocities were compared between two shoe conditions (barefoot versus slippers) and among the different poses. Barefoot performances produced more stable poses with significantly higher plantar contact areas, smaller COP oscillation areas and smaller anterior-posterior COP oscillations. COP oscillation areas, anterior-posterior COP oscillations and medio-lateral COP velocities indicated that attitude a la second is the least challenging and attitude derriére the most challenging pose.

Abstract
Dance is a rich source of material for researchers interested in the integration of movement and cognition. The multiple aspects of embodied cognition involved in performing and perceiving dance have inspired scientists to use dance as a means for studying motor control, expertise, and action-perception links. The aim of this review is to present basic research on cognitive and neural processes implicated in the execution, expression, and observation of dance, and to bring into relief contemporary issues and open research questions. The review addresses six topics: 1) dancers' exemplary motor control, in terms of postural control, equilibrium maintenance, and stabilization; 2) how dancers' timing and on-line synchronization are influenced by attention demands and motor experience; 3) the critical roles played by sequence learning and memory; 4) how dancers make strategic use of visual and motor imagery; 5) the insights into the neural coupling between action and perception yielded through exploration of the brain architecture mediating dance observation; and 6) a neuroesthetics perspective that sheds new light on the way audiences perceive and evaluate dance expression. Current and emerging issues are presented regarding future directions that will facilitate the ongoing dialog between science and dance.
