The functional significance of EEG microstates--Associations with modalities of thinking

Resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) microstates of healthy individuals following mild sleep deprivation

Mild sleep deprivation is widespread in many societies worldwide. Electroencephalography (EEG) microstate analysis provides information on spatial and temporal characteristics of resting brain network, serving as an indicator of neurophysiological activities at rest. This study seeks to investigate potential neural markers in EEG following mild sleep deprivation of a single night using EEG microstate analysis. Six-minute resting EEG was conducted on thirty healthy adults within 6 hours of waking in the morning and after at least 18 h of sleep deprivation. Translated and validated Malay language Karolinska Sleepiness Scale was used to assess the participants' degree of sleepiness. Microstate characteristics analysis was conducted on the final 24 subjects based on four standard microstate maps. Microstate C shows a significant increase in mean duration, coverage and occurrence, while microstate D has significantly higher occurrence after sleep deprivation. This study demonstrates notable changes in resting state EEG microstates following mild sleep deprivation. Present findings deepen our understanding of the brain's spatiotemporal dynamics under this condition and suggest the potential utility of neural markers in this domain as components of composite markers for sleep deprivation.

Microstate Analysis of Continuous Infant EEG: Tutorial and Reliability

Microstate analysis of resting-state EEG is a unique data-driven method for identifying patterns of scalp potential topographies, or microstates, that reflect stable but transient periods of synchronized neural activity evolving dynamically over time. During infancy - a critical period of rapid brain development and plasticity - microstate analysis offers a unique opportunity for characterizing the spatial and temporal dynamics of brain activity. However, whether measurements derived from this approach (e.g., temporal properties, transition probabilities, neural sources) show strong psychometric properties (i.e., reliability) during infancy is unknown and key information for advancing our understanding of how microstates are shaped by early life experiences and whether they relate to individual differences in infant abilities. A lack of methodological resources for performing microstate analysis of infant EEG has further hindered adoption of this cutting-edge approach by infant researchers. As a result, in the current study, we systematically addressed these knowledge gaps and report that most microstate-based measurements of brain organization and functioning except for transition probabilities were stable with four minutes of video-watching resting-state data and highly internally consistent with just one minute. In addition to these results, we provide a step-by-step tutorial, accompanying website, and open-access data for performing microstate analysis using a free, user-friendly software called Cartool. Taken together, the current study supports the reliability and feasibility of using EEG microstate analysis to study infant brain development and increases the accessibility of this approach for the field of developmental neuroscience.

Resting-State Functional Networks Correlate with Motor Performance in a Complex Visuomotor Task: An EEG Microstate Pilot Study on Healthy Individuals

Developing motor and cognitive skills is needed to achieve expert (motor) performance or functional recovery from a neurological condition, e.g., after stroke. While extensive practice plays an essential role in the acquisition of good motor performance, it is still unknown whether certain person-specific traits may predetermine the rate of motor learning. In particular, learners' functional brain organisation might play an important role in appropriately performing motor tasks. In this paper, we aimed to study how two critical cognitive brain networks-the Attention Network (AN) and the Default Mode Network (DMN)-affect the posterior motor performance in a complex visuomotor task: virtual surfing. We hypothesised that the preactivation of the AN would affect how participants divert their attention towards external stimuli, resulting in robust motor performance. Conversely, the excessive involvement of the DMN-linked to internally diverted attention and mind-wandering-would be detrimental for posterior motor performance. We extracted seven widely accepted microstates-representing participants mind states at rest-out of the Electroencephalography (EEG) resting-state recordings of 36 healthy volunteers, prior to execution of the virtual surfing task. By correlating neural biomarkers (microstates) and motor behavioural metrics, we confirmed that the preactivation of the posterior DMN was correlated with poor posterior performance in the motor task. However, we only found a non-significant association between AN preactivation and the posterior motor performance. In this EEG study, we propose the preactivation of the posterior DMN-imaged using EEG microstates-as a neural trait related to poor posterior motor performance. Our findings suggest that the role of the executive control system is to preserve an homeostasis between the AN and the DMN. Therefore, neurofeedback-based downregulation of DMN preactivation could help optimise motor training.

Changes in Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Default Network Oscillations between 19 and 29 Years of Age

The exploration of functional resting-state brain developmental parameters and measures can help to improve scientific, psychological, and medical applications. The present work focussed on both traditional approaches, such as topographical power analyses at the signal space level, and advanced approaches, such as the exploration of age-related dynamics of source space data. The results confirmed the expectation that the third life decade would show a kind of stability in oscillatory signal and source-space-related parameters. However, from a source dynamics perspective, different frequency ranges appear to develop quite differently, as reflected in age-related sequential network communication profiles. Among other discoveries, the left anterior cingulate source location could be shown to reduce bi-directional network communication in the lower alpha band, whereas it differentiated its uni- and bidirectional communication dynamics to sub-cortical and posterior brain locations. Higher alpha oscillations enhanced communication dynamics between the thalamus and particularly frontal areas. In conclusion, resting-state data appear to be, at least in part, functionally reorganized in the default mode network, while quantitative measures, such as topographical power and regional source activity, did not correlate with age in the third life decade. In line with other authors, we suggest the further development of a multi-perspective approach in biosignal analyses.

EEG signatures of cognitive decline after mild SARS-CoV-2 infection: an age-dependent study

BACKGROUND

Current research on the neurological impact of SARS-CoV-2 primarily focuses on the elderly or severely ill individuals. This study aims to explore the diverse neurological consequences of SARS-CoV-2 infection, with a particular focus on mildly affected children and adolescents.

METHODS

A cohort study was conducted to collect pre- and post-infection resting-state electroencephalogram (EEG) data from 185 participants and 181 structured questionnaires of long-term symptoms across four distinct age groups. The goal was to comprehensively evaluate the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection on these different age demographics. The study analyzed EEG changes of SARS-CoV-2 by potential biomarkers across age groups using both spatial and temporal approaches.

RESULTS

Spatial analysis indicated that children and adolescents exhibit smaller changes in brain network and microstate patterns post-infection, implying a milder cognitive impact. Sequential linear analyses showed that SARS-CoV-2 infection is associated with a marked rise in low-complexity, synchronized neural activity within low-frequency EEG bands. This is evidenced by a significant increase in Hjorth activity within the theta band and Hjorth mobility in the delta band. Sequential nonlinear analysis indicated a significant reduction in the Hurst exponent across all age groups, pointing to increased chaos and complexity within the cognitive system following infection. Furthermore, linear regression analysis based on questionnaires established a significant positive relationship between the magnitude of changes in these neural indicators and the persistence of long-term symptoms post-infection.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings underscore the enduring neurological impacts of SARS-CoV-2 infection, marked by cognitive decline and increased EEG disarray. Although children and adolescents experienced milder effects, cognitive decline and heightened low-frequency electrical activity were evident. These observations might contribute to understanding potential anxiety, insomnia, and neurodevelopmental implications.

Valence-specific EEG microstate modulations during self-generated affective states

Introduction

This study aims to explore the temporal dynamics of brain networks involved in self-generated affective states, specifically focusing on modulating these states in both positive and negative valences. The overarching goal is to contribute to a deeper understanding of the neurodynamic patterns associated with affective regulation, potentially informing the development of biomarkers for therapeutic interventions in mood and anxiety disorders.

Methods

Utilizing EEG microstate analysis during self-generated affective states, we investigated the temporal dynamics of five distinct microstates across different conditions, including baseline resting state and self-generated states of positive valence (e.g., awe, contentment) and negative valence (e.g., anger, fear).

Results

The study revealed noteworthy modulations in microstate dynamics during affective states. Additionally, valence-specific mechanisms of spontaneous affective regulation were identified. Negative valence affective states were characterized by the heightened presence of attention-associated microstates and reduced occurrence of salience-related microstates during negative valence states. In contrast, positive valence affective states manifested a prevalence of microstates related to visual/autobiographical memory and a reduced presence of auditory/language-associated microstates compared to both baseline and negative valence states.

Discussion

This study contributes to the field by employing EEG microstate analysis to discern the temporal dynamics of brain networks involved in self-generated affective states. Insights from this research carry significant implications for understanding neurodynamic patterns in affective regulation. The identification of valence-specific modulations and mechanisms has potential applications in developing biomarkers for mood and anxiety disorders, offering novel avenues for therapeutic interventions.

EEG Microstate as a Marker of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis

The pathophysiology of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) is not yet fully understood, but multifactorial hypotheses have been proposed that include defective central nervous system (CNS) control of posture, biomechanics, and body schema alterations. To deepen CNS control of posture in AIS, electroencephalographic (EEG) activity during a simple balance task in adolescents with and without AIS was parsed into EEG microstates. Microstates are quasi-stable spatial distributions of the electric potential of the brain that last tens of milliseconds. The spatial distribution of the EEG characterised by the orientation from left-frontal to right-posterior remains stable for a greater amount of time in AIS compared to controls. This spatial distribution of EEG, commonly named in the literature as class B, has been found to be correlated with the visual resting state network. Both vision and proprioception networks provide critical information in mapping the extrapersonal environment. This neurophysiological marker probably unveils an alteration in the postural control mechanism in AIS, suggesting a higher information processing load due to the increased postural demands caused by scoliosis.

Analysis of EEG microstates as biomarkers in neuropsychological processes - Review

Microstate analysis is a spatiotemporal method where instantaneous scalp potential topography represents the current state of the brain. The temporal evolution of these scalp topographies gives an understanding of quasi-stable periods of long-range coherence between distant electrodes, reflecting functional coordination within large-scale cortical networks. Researchers may probe into the relationships between microstates and other cognitive processes, such as memory retrieval and encoding. This is a tool for clinicians to enhance the precision of diagnosis and inform possibilities for treatment by acquiring information regarding individual diversity in microstates could lead to tailored medical methods. Customizing treatment according to a patient's microstate patterns could improve the efficacy of treatment. The papers selected for the review span a broad-spectrum including memory related disorders, psychiatry and neurological disorders. A section in the review article has been dedicated to source localization of EEG microstates. The selection of review papers shed light on the importance and huge potential of application of EEG microstate analysis in various neuropsychological processes. The review concludes with the need for standardization of microstate analysis. It suggests the incorporation of widely accepted machine learning techniques for increasing the accuracy, reliability and acceptability of microstate analysis as reliable biomarkers for neurological conditions in the future.

Resting-State EEG Microstates and Power Spectrum in Borderline Personality Disorder: A High-Density EEG Study

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a debilitating psychiatric condition characterized by emotional dysregulation, unstable sense of self, and impulsive, potentially self-harming behavior. In order to provide new neurophysiological insights on BPD, we complemented resting-state EEG frequency spectrum analysis with EEG microstates (MS) analysis to capture the spatiotemporal dynamics of large-scale neural networks. High-density EEG was recorded at rest in 16 BPD patients and 16 age-matched neurotypical controls. The relative power spectrum and broadband MS spatiotemporal parameters were compared between groups and their inter-correlations were examined. Compared to controls, BPD patients showed similar global spectral power, but exploratory univariate analyses on single channels indicated reduced relative alpha power and enhanced relative delta power at parietal electrodes. In terms of EEG MS, BPD patients displayed similar MS topographies as controls, indicating comparable neural generators. However, the MS temporal dynamics were significantly altered in BPD patients, who demonstrated opposite prevalence of MS C (lower than controls) and MS E (higher than controls). Interestingly, MS C prevalence correlated positively with global alpha power and negatively with global delta power, while MS E did not correlate with any measures of spectral power. Taken together, these observations suggest that BPD patients exhibit a state of cortical hyperactivation, represented by decreased posterior alpha power, together with an elevated presence of MS E, consistent with symptoms of elevated arousal and/or vigilance. This is the first study to investigate resting-state MS patterns in BPD, with findings of elevated MS E and the suggestion of reduced posterior alpha power indicating a disorder-specific neurophysiological signature previously unreported in a psychiatric population.

EEG Microstates in Mood and Anxiety Disorders: A Meta-analysis

To reduce the psycho-social burden increasing attention has focused on brain abnormalities in the most prevalent and highly co-occurring neuropsychiatric disorders, such as mood and anxiety. However, high inter-study variability in these patients results in inconsistent and contradictory alterations in the fast temporal dynamics of large-scale networks as measured by EEG microstates. Thus, in this meta-analysis, we aim to investigate the consistency of these changes to better understand possible common neuro-dynamical mechanisms of these disorders.In the systematic search, twelve studies investigating EEG microstate changes in participants with mood and anxiety disorders and individuals with subclinical depression were included in this meta-analysis, adding up to 787 participants.The results suggest that EEG microstates consistently discriminate mood and anxiety impairments from the general population in patients and subclinical states. Specifically, we found a small significant effect size for B microstates in patients compared to healthy controls, with larger effect sizes for increased B presence in unmedicated patients with comorbidity. In a subgroup meta-analysis of ten mood disorder studies, microstate D showed a significant effect size for decreased presence. When investigating only the two anxiety disorder studies, we found a significantly small effect size for the increased microstate A and a medium effect size for decreased microstate E (one study). However, more studies are needed to elucidate whether these findings are diagnostic-specific markers.Results are discussed in relation to the functional meaning of microstates and possible contribution to an explanatory mechanism of overlapping symptomatology of mood and anxiety disorders.

EEG Spatial-temporal Dynamics of Resting-state Activity in Young Women with Anorexia Nervosa: Preliminary Evidence

The aim of this study was to provide preliminary evidence on temporal dynamics of resting-state brain networks in youth with anorexia nervosa (AN) using electroencephalography (EEG). Resting-state EEG data were collected in 18 young women with AN and 18 healthy controls (HC). Between-group differences in brain networks were assessed using microstates analyses. Five microstates were identified across all subjects (A, B, C, D, E). Using a single set of maps representative of the whole dataset, group differences were identified for microstates A, C, and E. A common-for-all template revealed a relatively high degree of consistency in results for reduced time coverage of microstate C, but also an increased presence of microstate class E. AN and HC had different microstate transition probabilities, largely involving microstate A. Using LORETA, for microstate D, we found that those with AN had augmented activations in the left frontal inferior operculum, left insula, and bilateral paracentral lobule, compared with HC. For microstate E, AN had augmented activations in the para-hippocampal gyrus, caudate, pallidum, cerebellum, and cerebellar vermis. Our findings suggest altered microstates in young women with AN associated with integration of sensory and bodily signals, monitoring of internal/external mental states, and self-referential processes. Future research should examine how EEG-derived microstates could be applied to develop diagnostic and prognostic models of AN.

EEG Microstates as Markers for Cognitive Impairments in Fragile X Syndrome

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is one of the most common inherited causes of intellectual disabilities. While there is currently no cure for FXS, EEG is considered an important method to investigate the pathophysiology and evaluate behavioral and cognitive treatments. We conducted EEG microstate analysis to investigate resting brain dynamics in FXS participants. Resting-state recordings from 70 FXS participants and 71 chronological age-matched typically developing control (TDC) participants were used to derive microstates via modified k-means clustering. The occurrence, mean global field power (GFP), and global explained variance (GEV) of microstate C were significantly higher in the FXS group compared to the TDC group. The mean GFP was significantly negatively correlated with non-verbal IQ (NVIQ) in the FXS group, where lower NVIQ scores were associated with greater GFP. In addition, the occurrence, mean duration, mean GFP, and GEV of microstate D were significantly greater in the FXS group than the TDC group. The mean GFP and occurrence of microstate D were also correlated with individual alpha frequencies in the FXS group, where lower IAF frequencies accompanied greater microstate GFP and occurrence. Alterations in microstates C and D may be related to the two well-established cognitive characteristics of FXS, intellectual disabilities and attention impairments, suggesting that microstate parameters could serve as markers to study cognitive impairments and evaluate treatment outcomes in this population. Slowing of the alpha peak frequency and its correlation to microstate D parameters may suggest changes in thalamocortical dynamics in FXS, which could be specifically related to attention control. Magnetoencephalography-derived oscillatory microstate patterns across lifespan: the Cambridge centre for ageing and neuroscience cohort

The aging brain represents the primary risk factor for many neurodegenerative disorders. Whole-brain oscillations may contribute novel early biomarkers of aging. Here, we investigated the dynamic oscillatory neural activities across lifespan (from 18 to 88 years) using resting Magnetoencephalography (MEG) in a large cohort of 624 individuals. Our aim was to examine the patterns of oscillation microstates during the aging process. By using a machine-learning algorithm, we identify four typical clusters of microstate patterns across different age groups and different frequency bands: left-to-right topographic MS1, right-to-left topographic MS2, anterior-posterior MS3 and fronto-central MS4. We observed a decreased alpha duration and an increased alpha occurrence for sensory-related microstate patterns (MS1 & MS2). Accordingly, theta and beta changes from MS1 & MS2 may be related to motor decline that increased with age. Furthermore, voluntary 'top-down' saliency/attention networks may be reflected by the increased MS3 & MS4 alpha occurrence and complementary beta activities. The findings of this study advance our knowledge of how the aging brain shows dysfunctions in neural state transitions. By leveraging the identified microstate patterns, this study provides new insights into predicting healthy aging and the potential neuropsychiatric cognitive decline.

EEG analysis in patients with schizophrenia based on microstate semantic modeling method

Introduction

Microstate analysis enables the characterization of quasi-stable scalp potential fields on a sub-second timescale, preserving the temporal dynamics of EEG and spatial information of scalp potential distributions. Owing to its capacity to provide comprehensive pathological insights, it has been widely applied in the investigation of schizophrenia (SCZ). Nevertheless, previous research has primarily concentrated on differences in individual microstate temporal characteristics, neglecting potential distinctions in microstate semantic sequences and not fully considering the issue of the universality of microstate templates between SCZ patients and healthy individuals.

Methods

This study introduced a microstate semantic modeling analysis method aimed at schizophrenia recognition. Firstly, microstate templates corresponding to both SCZ patients and healthy individuals were extracted from resting-state EEG data. The introduction of a dual-template strategy makes a difference in the quality of microstate sequences. Quality features of microstate sequences were then extracted from four dimensions: Correlation, Explanation, Residual, and Dispersion. Subsequently, the concept of microstate semantic features was proposed, decomposing the microstate sequence into continuous sub-sequences. Specific semantic sub-sequences were identified by comparing the time parameters of sub-sequences.

Results

The SCZ recognition test was performed on the public dataset for both the quality features and semantic features of microstate sequences, yielding an impressive accuracy of 97.2%. Furthermore, cross-subject experimental validation was conducted, demonstrating that the method proposed in this paper achieves a recognition rate of 96.4% between different subjects.

Discussion

This research offers valuable insights for the clinical diagnosis of schizophrenia. In the future, further studies will seek to augment the sample size to enhance the effectiveness and reliability of this method.

Electroencephalography microstates highlight specific mindfulness traits

The present study aimed to investigate the spontaneous dynamics of large-scale brain networks underlying mindfulness as a dispositional trait, through resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) microstates analysis. Eighteen participants had attended a standardized mindfulness-based stress reduction training (MBSR), and 18 matched waitlist individuals (CTRL) were recorded at rest while they were passively exposed to auditory stimuli. Participants' mindfulness traits were assessed with the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ). To further explore the relationship between microstate dynamics at rest and mindfulness traits, participants were also asked to rate their experience according to five phenomenal dimensions. After training, MBSR participants showed a highly significant increase in FFMQ score, as well as higher observing and non-reactivity FFMQ sub-scores than CTRL participants. Microstate analysis revealed four classes of microstates (A-D) in global clustering across all subjects. The MBSR group showed lower duration, occurrence and coverage of microstate C than the control group. Moreover, these microstate C parameters were negatively correlated to non-reactivity sub-scores of FFMQ across participants, whereas the microstate A occurrence was negatively correlated to FFMQ total score. Further analysis of participants' self-reports suggested that MBSR participants showed a better sensory-affective integration of auditory interferences. In line with previous studies, our results suggest that temporal dynamics of microstate C underlie specifically the non-reactivity trait of mindfulness. These findings encourage further research into microstates in the evaluation and monitoring of the impact of mindfulness-based interventions on the mental health and well-being of individuals.

Global Functional Connectivity is Associated with Mind Wandering Domain of Comfort

The resting-state paradigm is frequently applied to study spontaneous activity of the brain in normal and clinical conditions. To assess the relationship between brain activity and subjective experiences, various questionnaires are used. Previous studies using Amsterdam Resting State Questionnaire were focusing on fMRI functional connectivity or EEG microstates and spectral aspect. Here, we utilized Global Field Synchronization as the parameter to estimate global functional connectivity. By re-analyzing the resting-state data from 226 young healthy participants we showed a strong evidence of relationship between ARSQ domain of Comfort and GFS values in the alpha range (r = 0.210, BF10 = 12.338) and substantial evidence for positive relationship between ARSQ domain of Comfort and GFS in the beta frequency range (r = 196, BF10 = 6.307). Our study indicates the relevance of assessments of spontaneous thought occurring during the resting-state for the understanding of the individual intrinsic electrical brain activity.

The Functional Aspects of Resting EEG Microstates: A Systematic Review

A growing body of clinical and cognitive neuroscience studies have adapted a broadband EEG microstate approach to evaluate the electrical activity of large-scale cortical networks. However, the functional aspects of these microstates have not yet been systematically reviewed. Here, we present an overview of the existing literature and systematize the results to provide hints on the functional role of electrical brain microstates. Studies that evaluated and manipulated the temporal properties of resting-state microstates and utilized questionnaires, task-initiated thoughts, specific tasks before or between EEG session(s), pharmacological interventions, neuromodulation approaches, or localized sources of the extracted microstates were selected. Fifty studies that met the inclusion criteria were included. A new microstate labeling system has been proposed for a comprehensible comparison between the studies, where four classical microstates are referred to as A-D, and the others are labeled by the frequency of their appearance. Microstate A was associated with both auditory and visual processing and links to subjects' arousal/arousability. Microstate B showed associations with visual processing related to self, self-visualization, and autobiographical memory. Microstate C was related to processing personally significant information, self-reflection, and self-referential internal mentation rather than autonomic information processing. In contrast, microstate E was related to processing interoceptive and emotional information and to the salience network. Microstate D was associated with executive functioning. Microstate F is suggested to be a part of the Default Mode Network and plays a role in personally significant information processing, mental simulations, and theory of mind. Microstate G is potentially linked to the somatosensory network.

EEG-Meta-Microstates: Towards a More Objective Use of Resting-State EEG Microstate Findings Across Studies

Over the last decade, EEG resting-state microstate analysis has evolved from a niche existence to a widely used and well-accepted methodology. The rapidly increasing body of empirical findings started to yield overarching patterns of associations of biological and psychological states and traits with specific microstate classes. However, currently, this cross-referencing among apparently similar microstate classes of different studies is typically done by "eyeballing" of printed template maps by the individual authors, lacking a systematic procedure. To improve the reliability and validity of future findings, we present a tool to systematically collect the actual data of template maps from as many published studies as possible and present them in their entirety as a matrix of spatial similarity. The tool also allows importing novel template maps and systematically extracting the findings associated with specific microstate maps from ongoing or published studies. The analysis of 40 included sets of template maps indicated that: (i) there is a high degree of similarity of template maps across studies, (ii) similar template maps were associated with converging empirical findings, and (iii) representative meta-microstates can be extracted from the individual studies. We hope that this tool will be useful in coming to a more comprehensive, objective, and overarching representation of microstate findings.

Identification of autism spectrum disorder based on electroencephalography: A systematic review

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by difficulties in social communication and repetitive and stereotyped behaviors. According to the World Health Organization, about 1 in 100 children worldwide has autism. With the global prevalence of ASD, timely and accurate diagnosis has been essential in enhancing the intervention effectiveness for ASD children. Traditional ASD diagnostic methods rely on clinical observations and behavioral assessment, with the disadvantages of time-consuming and lack of objective biological indicators. Therefore, automated diagnostic methods based on machine learning and deep learning technologies have emerged and become significant since they can achieve more objective, efficient, and accurate ASD diagnosis. Electroencephalography (EEG) is an electrophysiological monitoring method that records changes in brain spontaneous potential activity, which is of great significance for identifying ASD children. By analyzing EEG data, it is possible to detect abnormal synchronous neuronal activity of ASD children. This paper gives a comprehensive review of the EEG-based ASD identification using traditional machine learning methods and deep learning approaches, including their merits and potential pitfalls. Additionally, it highlights the challenges and the opportunities ahead in search of more effective and efficient methods to automatically diagnose autism based on EEG signals, which aims to facilitate automated ASD identification.

Normative Temporal Dynamics of Resting EEG Microstates

The large-scale electrophysiological events known as electroencephalographic microstates provide an important window into the intrinsic activity of whole-brain neuronal networks. The spontaneous activity of coordinated brain networks, including the ongoing temporal dynamics expressed by microstates, are thought to reflect individuals' neurocognitive functioning, and predict development, disease progression, and psychological differences among varied populations. A comprehensive understanding of human brain function therefore requires characterizing typical and atypical patterns in the temporal dynamics of microstates. But population-level estimates of normative microstate temporal dynamics are still unknown. To address this gap, I conducted a systematic search of the literature and accompanying meta-analysis of the average dynamics of microstates obtained from studies investigating spontaneous brain activity in individuals during periods of eyes-closed and eyes-open rest. Meta-analyses provided estimates of the average temporal dynamics of microstates across 93 studies totaling 6583 unique individual participants drawn from diverse populations. Results quantified the expected range of plausible estimates of average microstate dynamics across study samples, as well as characterized heterogeneity resulting from sampling variability and systematic differences in development, clinical diagnoses, or other study methodological factors. Specifically, microstate dynamics significantly differed for samples with specific developmental differences or clinical diagnoses, relative to healthy, typically developing samples. This research supports the notion that microstates and their dynamics reflect functionally relevant properties of large-scale brain networks, encoding typical and atypical neurocognitive functioning.

Frequency Analysis of EEG Microstate Sequences in Wakefulness and NREM Sleep

The majority of EEG microstate analyses concern wakefulness, and the existing sleep studies have focused on changes in spatial microstate properties and on microstate transitions between adjacent time points, the shortest available time scale. We present a more extensive time series analysis of unsmoothed EEG microstate sequences in wakefulness and non-REM sleep stages across many time scales. Very short time scales are assessed with Markov tests, intermediate time scales by the entropy rate and long time scales by a spectral analysis which identifies characteristic microstate frequencies. During the descent from wakefulness to sleep stage N3, we find that the increasing mean microstate duration is a gradual phenomenon explained by a continuous slowing of microstate dynamics as described by the relaxation time of the transition probability matrix. The finite entropy rate, which considers longer microstate histories, shows that microstate sequences become more predictable (less random) with decreasing vigilance level. Accordingly, the Markov property is absent in wakefulness but in sleep stage N3, 10/19 subjects have microstate sequences compatible with a second-order Markov process. A spectral microstate analysis is performed by comparing the time-lagged mutual information coefficients of microstate sequences with the autocorrelation function of the underlying EEG. We find periodic microstate behavior in all vigilance states, linked to alpha frequencies in wakefulness, theta activity in N1, sleep spindle frequencies in N2, and in the delta frequency band in N3. In summary, we show that EEG microstates are a dynamic phenomenon with oscillatory properties that slow down in sleep and are coupled to specific EEG frequencies across several sleep stages.

Mindfulness meditation styles differently modulate source-level MEG microstate dynamics and complexity

Background

The investigation of mindfulness meditation practice, classically divided into focused attention meditation (FAM), and open monitoring meditation (OMM) styles, has seen a long tradition of theoretical, affective, neurophysiological and clinical studies. In particular, the high temporal resolution of magnetoencephalography (MEG) or electroencephalography (EEG) has been exploited to fill the gap between the personal experience of meditation practice and its neural correlates. Mounting evidence, in fact, shows that human brain activity is highly dynamic, transiting between different brain states (microstates). In this study, we aimed at exploring MEG microstates at source-level during FAM, OMM and in the resting state, as well as the complexity and criticality of dynamic transitions between microstates.

Methods

Ten right-handed Theravada Buddhist monks with a meditative expertise of minimum 2,265 h participated in the experiment. MEG data were acquired during a randomized block design task (6 min FAM, 6 min OMM, with each meditative block preceded and followed by 3 min resting state). Source reconstruction was performed using eLORETA on individual cortical space, and then parcellated according to the Human Connect Project atlas. Microstate analysis was then applied to parcel level signals in order to derive microstate topographies and indices. In addition, from microstate sequences, the Hurst exponent and the Lempel-Ziv complexity (LZC) were computed.

Results

Our results show that the coverage and occurrence of specific microstates are modulated either by being in a meditative state or by performing a specific meditation style. Hurst exponent values in both meditation conditions are reduced with respect to the value observed during rest, LZC shows significant differences between OMM, FAM, and REST, with a progressive increase from REST to FAM to OMM.

Discussion

Importantly, we report changes in brain criticality indices during meditation and between meditation styles, in line with a state-like effect of meditation on cognitive performance. In line with previous reports, we suggest that the change in cognitive state experienced in meditation is paralleled by a shift with respect to critical points in brain dynamics.

Dynamic Neural Patterns of Human Emotions in Virtual Reality: Insights from EEG Microstate Analysis

Emotions play a crucial role in human life and affect mental health. Understanding the neural patterns associated with emotions is essential. Previous studies carried out some exploration of the neural features of emotions, but most have designed experiments in two-dimensional (2D) environments, which differs from real-life scenarios. To create a more real environment, this study investigated emotion-related brain activity using electroencephalography (EEG) microstate analysis in a virtual reality (VR) environment. We recruited 42 healthy volunteers to participate in our study. We explored the dynamic features of different emotions, and four characteristic microstates were analyzed. In the alpha band, microstate A exhibited a higher occurrence in both negative and positive emotions than in neutral emotions. Microstate C exhibited a prolonged duration of negative emotions compared to positive emotions, and a higher occurrence was observed in both microstates C and D during positive emotions. Notably, a unique transition pair was observed between microstates B and C during positive emotions, whereas a unique transition pair was observed between microstates A and D during negative emotions. This study emphasizes the potential of integrating virtual reality (VR) and EEG to facilitate experimental design. Furthermore, this study enhances our comprehension of neural activities during various emotional states.

The fusion of multi-omics profile and multimodal EEG data contributes to the personalized diagnostic strategy for neurocognitive disorders

BACKGROUND

The increasing prevalence of neurocognitive disorders (NCDs) in the aging population worldwide has become a significant concern due to subjectivity of evaluations and the lack of precise diagnostic methods and specific indicators. Developing personalized diagnostic strategies for NCDs has therefore become a priority.

RESULTS

Multimodal electroencephalography (EEG) data of a matched cohort of normal aging (NA) and NCDs seniors were recorded, and their faecal samples and urine exosomes were collected to identify multi-omics signatures and metabolic pathways in NCDs by integrating metagenomics, proteomics, and metabolomics analysis. Additionally, experimental verification of multi-omics signatures was carried out in aged mice using faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). We found that NCDs seniors had low EEG power spectral density and identified specific microbiota, including Ruminococcus gnavus, Enterocloster bolteae, Lachnoclostridium sp. YL 32, and metabolites, including L-tryptophan, L-glutamic acid, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and fatty acid esters of hydroxy fatty acids (FAHFAs), as well as disturbed biosynthesis of aromatic amino acids and TCA cycle dysfunction, validated in aged mice. Finally, we employed a support vector machine (SVM) algorithm to construct a machine learning model to classify NA and NCDs groups based on the fusion of EEG data and multi-omics profiles and the model demonstrated 92.69% accuracy in classifying NA and NCDs groups.

CONCLUSIONS

Our study highlights the potential of multi-omics profiling and EEG data fusion in personalized diagnosis of NCDs, with the potential to improve diagnostic precision and provide insights into the underlying mechanisms of NCDs. Video Abstract.

EEG microstates analysis after TMS in patients with subacute stroke during the resting state

To investigate whether intermittent theta burst stimulation over the cerebellum induces changes in resting-state electroencephalography microstates in patients with subacute stroke and its correlation with cognitive and emotional function. Twenty-four stroke patients and 17 healthy controls were included in this study. Patients and healthy controls were assessed at baseline, including resting-state electroencephalography and neuropsychological scales. Fifteen patients received lateral cerebellar intermittent theta burst stimulation as well as routine rehabilitation training (intermittent theta burst stimulation-RRT group), whereas 9 patients received only conventional rehabilitation training (routine rehabilitation training group). After 2 wk, baseline data were recorded again in both groups. Stroke patients exhibited reduced parameters in microstate D and increased parameters in microstate C compared with healthy controls. However, after the administration of intermittent theta burst stimulation over the lateral cerebellum, significant alterations were observed in the majority of metrics for both microstates D and C. Lateral cerebellar intermittent theta burst stimulation combined with conventional rehabilitation has a stronger tendency to improve emotional and cognitive function in patients with subacute stroke than conventional rehabilitation. The improvement of mood and cognitive function was significantly associated with microstates C and D. We identified electroencephalography microstate spatiotemporal dynamics associated with clinical improvement following a course of intermittent theta burst stimulation therapy.

Evidence for modulation of EEG microstates by mental workload levels and task types

Electroencephalography (EEG) microstate analysis has become a popular tool for studying the spatial and temporal dynamics of large-scale electrophysiological activities in the brain in recent years. Four canonical topographies of the electric field (classes A, B, C, and D) have been widely identified, and changes in microstate parameters are associated with several psychiatric disorders and cognitive functions. Recent studies have reported the modulation of EEG microstate by mental workload (MWL). However, the common practice of evaluating MWL is in a specific task. Whether the modulation of microstate by MWL is consistent across different types of tasks is still not clear. Here, we studied the topographies and dynamics of microstate in two independent MWL tasks: NBack and the multi-attribute task battery (MATB) and showed that the modulation of MWL on microstate topographies and parameters depended on tasks. We found that the parameters of microstates A and C, and the topographies of microstates A, B, and D were significantly different between the two tasks. Meanwhile, all four microstate topographies and parameters of microstates A and C were different during the NBack task, but no significant difference was found during the MATB task. Furthermore, we employed a support vector machine recursive feature elimination procedure to investigate whether microstate parameters were suitable for MWL classification. An averaged classification accuracy of 87% for within-task and 78% for cross-task MWL discrimination was achieved with at least 10 features. Collectively, our findings suggest that topographies and parameters of microstates can provide valuable information about neural activity patterns with a dynamic temporal structure at different levels of MWL, but the modulation of MWL depends on tasks and their corresponding functional systems. Moreover, as a potential indicator, microstate parameters could be used to distinguish MWL.

EEG microstates in early-to-middle childhood show associations with age, biological sex, and alpha power

Electroencephalographic (EEG) microstates can provide a unique window into the temporal dynamics of large-scale brain networks across brief (millisecond) timescales. Here, we analysed fundamental temporal features of microstates extracted from the broadband EEG signal in a large (N = 139) cohort of children spanning early-to-middle childhood (4-12 years of age). Linear regression models were used to examine if participants' age and biological sex could predict the temporal parameters GEV, duration, coverage, and occurrence, for five microstate classes (A-E) across both eyes-closed and eyes-open resting-state recordings. We further explored associations between these microstate parameters and posterior alpha power after removal of the 1/f-like aperiodic signal. The microstates obtained from our neurodevelopmental EEG recordings broadly replicated the four canonical microstate classes (A to D) frequently reported in adults, with the addition of the more recently established microstate class E. Biological sex served as a significant predictor in the regression models for four of the five microstate classes (A, C, D, and E). In addition, duration and occurrence for microstate E were both found to be positively associated with age for the eyes-open recordings, while the temporal parameters of microstates C and E both exhibited associations with alpha band spectral power. Together, these findings highlight the influence of age and sex on large-scale functional brain networks during early-to-middle childhood, extending understanding of neural dynamics across this important period for brain development.

EEG spectral and microstate analysis originating residual inhibition of tinnitus induced by tailor-made notched music training

Tailor-made notched music training (TMNMT) is a promising therapy for tinnitus. Residual inhibition (RI) is one of the few interventions that can temporarily inhibit tinnitus, which is a useful technique that can be applied to tinnitus research and explore tinnitus mechanisms. In this study, RI effect of TMNMT in tinnitus was investigated mainly using behavioral tests, EEG spectral and microstate analysis. To our knowledge, this study is the first to investigate RI effect of TMNMT. A total of 44 participants with tinnitus were divided into TMNMT group (22 participants; ECnm, NMnm, RInm represent that EEG recordings with eyes closed stimuli-pre, stimuli-ing, stimuli-post by TMNMT music, respectively) and Placebo control group (22 participants; ECpb, PBpb, RIpb represent that EEG recordings with eyes closed stimuli-pre, stimuli-ing, stimuli-post by Placebo music, respectively) in a single-blind manner. Behavioral tests, EEG spectral analysis (covering delta, theta, alpha, beta, gamma frequency bands) and microstate analysis (involving four microstate classes, A to D) were employed to evaluate RI effect of TMNMT. The results of the study showed that TMNMT had a stronger inhibition ability and longer inhibition time according to the behavioral tests compared to Placebo. Spectral analysis showed that RI effect of TMNMT increased significantly the power spectral density (PSD) of delta, theta bands and decreased significantly the PSD of alpha2 band, and microstate analysis showed that RI effect of TMNMT had shorter duration (microstate B, microstate C), higher Occurrence (microstate A, microstate C, microstate D), Coverage (microstate A) and transition probabilities (microstate A to microstate B, microstate A to microstate D and microstate D to microstate A). Meanwhile, RI effect of Placebo decreased significantly the PSD of alpha2 band, and microstate analysis showed that RI effect of Placebo had shorter duration (microstate C, microstate D), higher occurrence (microstate B, microstate C), lower coverage (microstate C, microstate D), higher transition probabilities (microstate A to microstate B, microstate B to microstate A). It was also found that the intensity of tinnitus symptoms was significant positively correlated with the duration of microstate B in five subgroups (ECnm, NMnm, RInm, ECpb, PBpb). Our study provided valuable experimental evidence and practical applications for the effectiveness of TMNMT as a novel music therapy for tinnitus. The observed stronger residual inhibition (RI) ability of TMNMT supported its potential applications in tinnitus treatment. Furthermore, the temporal dynamics of EEG microstates serve as novel functional and trait markers of synchronous brain activity that contribute to a deep understanding of the neural mechanism underlying TMNMT treatment for tinnitus.

Brain microstate spatio-temporal dynamics as a candidate endotype of consciousness

Consciousness can be defined as a phenomenological experience continuously evolving. Current research showed how conscious mental activity can be subdivided into a series of atomic brain states converging to a discrete spatiotemporal pattern of global neuronal firing. Using the high temporal resolution of EEG recordings in patients with a severe Acquired Brain Injury (sABI) admitted to an Intensive Rehabilitation Unit (IRU), we detected a novel endotype of consciousness from the spatiotemporal brain dynamics identified via microstate analysis. Also, we investigated whether microstate features were associated with common neurophysiological alterations. Finally, the prognostic information comprised in such descriptors was analysed in a sub-cohort of patients with prolonged Disorder of Consciousness (pDoC). Occurrence of frontally-oriented microstates (C microstate), likelihood of maintaining such brain state or transitioning to the C topography and complexity were found to be indicators of consciousness presence and levels. Features of left-right asymmetric microstates and transitions toward them were found to be negatively correlated with antero-posterior brain reorganization and EEG symmetry. Substantial differences in microstates' sequence complexity and presence of C topography were found between groups of patients with alpha dominant background, cortical reactivity and antero-posterior gradient. Also, transitioning from left-right to antero-posterior microstates was found to be an independent predictor of consciousness recovery, stronger than consciousness levels at IRU's admission. In conclusions, global brain dynamics measured with scale-free estimators can be considered an indicator of consciousness presence and a candidate marker of short-term recovery in patients with a pDoC.

Time course of EEG complexity reflects attentional engagement during listening to speech in noise

Auditory distractions are recognized to considerably challenge the quality of information encoding during speech comprehension. This study explores electroencephalography (EEG) microstate dynamics in ecologically valid, noisy settings, aiming to uncover how these auditory distractions influence the process of information encoding during speech comprehension. We examined three listening scenarios: (1) speech perception with background noise (LA), (2) focused attention on the background noise (BA), and (3) intentional disregard of the background noise (BUA). Our findings showed that microstate complexity and unpredictability increased when attention was directed towards speech compared with tasks without speech (LA > BA & BUA). Notably, the time elapsed between the recurrence of microstates increased significantly in LA compared with both BA and BUA. This suggests that coping with background noise during speech comprehension demands more sustained cognitive effort. Additionally, a two-stage time course for both microstate complexity and alpha-to-theta power ratio was observed. Specifically, in the early epochs, a lower level was observed, which gradually increased and eventually reached a steady level in the later epochs. The findings suggest that the initial stage is primarily driven by sensory processes and information gathering, while the second stage involves higher level cognitive engagement, including mnemonic binding and memory encoding.

Frequency-Dependent Microstate Characteristics for Mild Cognitive Impairment in Parkinson's Disease

Cognitive impairment is typically reflected in the time and frequency variations of electroencephalography (EEG). Integrating time-domain and frequency-domain analysis methods is essential to better understand and assess cognitive ability. Timely identification of cognitive levels in early Parkinson's disease (ePD) patients can help mitigate the risk of future dementia. For the investigation of the brain activity and states related to cognitive levels, this study recruited forty ePD patients for EEG microstate analysis, including 13 with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and 27 without MCI (control group). To determine the specific frequency band on which the microstate analysis relies, a deep learning framework was employed to discern the frequency dependence of the cognitive level in ePD patients. The input to the convolutional neural network consisted of the power spectral density of multi-channel multi-point EEG signals. The visualization technique of gradient-weighted class activation mapping was utilized to extract the optimal frequency band for identifying MCI samples. Within this frequency band, microstate analysis was conducted and correlated with the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) Scale. The deep neural network revealed significant differences in the 1-11.5Hz spectrum of the ePD-MCI group compared to the control group. In this characteristic frequency band, ePD-MCI patients exhibited a pattern of global microstate disorder. The coverage rate and occurrence frequency of microstate A and D increased significantly and were both negatively correlated with the MoCA scale. Meanwhile, the coverage, frequency and duration of microstate C decreased significantly and were positively correlated with the MoCA scale. Our work unveils abnormal microstate characteristics in ePD-MCI based on time-frequency fusion, enhancing our understanding of cognitively related brain dynamics and providing electrophysiological markers for ePD-MCI recognition.

Temporal and spectral analyses of EEG microstate reveals neural effects of transcranial photobiomodulation on the resting brain

Introduction

The quantification of electroencephalography (EEG) microstates is an effective method for analyzing synchronous neural firing and assessing the temporal dynamics of the resting state of the human brain. Transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM) is a safe and effective modality to improve human cognition. However, it is unclear how prefrontal tPBM neuromodulates EEG microstates both temporally and spectrally.

Methods

64-channel EEG was recorded from 45 healthy subjects in both 8-min active and sham tPBM sessions, using a 1064-nm laser applied to the right forehead of the subjects. After EEG data preprocessing, time-domain EEG microstate analysis was performed to obtain four microstate classes for both tPBM and sham sessions throughout the pre-, during-, and post-stimulation periods, followed by extraction of the respective microstate parameters. Moreover, frequency-domain analysis was performed by combining multivariate empirical mode decomposition with the Hilbert-Huang transform.

Results

Statistical analyses revealed that tPBM resulted in (1) a significant increase in the occurrence of microstates A and D and a significant decrease in the contribution of microstate C, (2) a substantial increase in the transition probabilities between microstates A and D, and (3) a substantial increase in the alpha power of microstate D.

Discussion

These findings confirm the neurophysiological effects of tPBM on EEG microstates of the resting brain, particularly in class D, which represents brain activation across the frontal and parietal regions. This study helps to better understand tPBM-induced dynamic alterations in EEG microstates that may be linked to the tPBM mechanism of action for the enhancement of human cognition.

Resting-state electroencephalography microstate dynamics altered in patients with migraine with and without aura-A pilot study

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate electroencephalography (EEG) microstate differences between patients with migraine with aura (MWA), patients with migraine without aura (MWoA), and healthy controls (HC).

BACKGROUND

Previous research employing microstate analysis found unique microstate alterations in patients with MWoA; however, it is uncertain how microstates appear in patients with MWA.

METHODS

This study was conducted at the Headache Clinic of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University. In total, 30 patients with MWA, 30 with MWoA, and 30 HC were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. An EEG was recorded for all participants under resting state. The microstate parameters of four widely recognized microstate classes A-D were calculated and compared across the three groups.

RESULTS

The occurrence of microstate B (MsB) in the MWoA group was significantly higher than in the HC (p = 0.006, Cohen's d = 0.72) and MWA (p = 0.016, Cohen's d = 0.57) groups, while the contribution of MsB was significantly increased in the MWoA group compared to the HC group (p = 0.016, Cohen's d = 0.64). Microstate A (MsA) displayed a longer duration in the MWA group compared to the MWoA group (p = 0.007, Cohen's d = 0.69). Furthermore, the transition probability between MsB and microstate D was significantly increased in the MWoA group compared to the HC group (p = 0.009, Cohen's d = 0.68 for B to D; p = 0.007, Cohen's d = 0.71 for D to B). Finally, the occurrence and contribution of MsB were positively related to headache characteristics in the MWoA group but negatively in the MWA group, whereas the duration of MsA was positively related to the visual analog scale in the MWA group (all p < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Patients with MWA and MWoA have altered microstate dynamics, indicating that resting-state brain network disorders may play a role in migraine pathogenesis. Microstate parameters may have the potential to aid clinical management, which needs to be investigated further.

Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Memory Encoding and Memory Retrieval States

Memory encoding and memory retrieval are neurally distinct brain states that can be differentiated on the basis of cortical network activity. However, it is unclear whether sustained engagement of one network or fluctuations between multiple networks give rise to these memory states. The spatiotemporal dynamics of memory states may have important implications for memory behavior and cognition; however, measuring temporally resolved signals of cortical networks poses a challenge. Here, we recorded scalp electroencephalography from participants performing a mnemonic state task in which they were biased toward memory encoding or retrieval. We performed a microstate analysis to measure the temporal dynamics of cortical networks throughout this mnemonic state task. We find that Microstate E, a putative analog of the default mode network, shows temporally sustained dissociations between memory encoding and retrieval, with greater engagement during retrieve compared with encode trials. We further show that decreased engagement of Microstate E is a general property of encoding, rather than a reflection of retrieval suppression. Thus, memory success, as well as cognition more broadly, may be influenced by the ability to engage or disengage Microstate E in a goal-dependent manner.

Topological data analysis for revealing dynamic brain reconfiguration in MEG data

In recent years, the focus of the functional connectivity community has shifted from stationary approaches to the ones that include temporal dynamics. Especially, non-invasive electrophysiological data (magnetoencephalography/electroencephalography (MEG/EEG)) with high temporal resolution and good spatial coverage have made it possible to measure the fast alterations in the neural activity in the brain during ongoing cognition. In this article, we analyze dynamic brain reconfiguration using MEG images collected from subjects during the rest and the cognitive tasks. Our proposed topological data analysis method, called Mapper, produces biomarkers that differentiate cognitive tasks without prior spatial and temporal collapse of the data. The suggested method provides an interactive visualization of the rapid fluctuations in electrophysiological data during motor and cognitive tasks; hence, it has the potential to extract clinically relevant information at an individual level without temporal and spatial collapse.

A revisit of the amygdala theory of autism: Twenty years after

The human amygdala has long been implicated to play a key role in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Yet it remains unclear to what extent the amygdala accounts for the social dysfunctions in ASD. Here, we review studies that investigate the relationship between amygdala function and ASD. We focus on studies that employ the same task and stimuli to directly compare people with ASD and patients with focal amygdala lesions, and we also discuss functional data associated with these studies. We show that the amygdala can only account for a limited number of deficits in ASD (primarily face perception tasks but not social attention tasks), a network view is, therefore, more appropriate. We next discuss atypical brain connectivity in ASD, factors that can explain such atypical brain connectivity, and novel tools to analyze brain connectivity. Lastly, we discuss new opportunities from multimodal neuroimaging with data fusion and human single-neuron recordings that can enable us to better understand the neural underpinnings of social dysfunctions in ASD. Together, the influential amygdala theory of autism should be extended with emerging data-driven scientific discoveries such as machine learning-based surrogate models to a broader framework that considers brain connectivity at the global scale.

Degradation of EEG microstates patterns in subjective cognitive decline and mild cognitive impairment: Early biomarkers along the Alzheimer's Disease continuum?

Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathological changes may begin up to decades earlier than the appearance of the first symptoms of cognitive decline. Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) could be the first pre-clinical sign of possible AD, which might be followed by mild cognitive impairment (MCI), the initial stage of clinical cognitive decline. However, the neural correlates of these prodromic stages are not completely clear yet. Recent studies suggest that EEG analysis tools characterizing the cortical activity as a whole, such as microstates and cortical regions connectivity, might support a characterization of SCD and MCI conditions. Here we test this approach by performing a broad set of analyses to identify the prominent EEG markers differentiating SCD (n = 57), MCI (n = 46) and healthy control subjects (HC, n = 19). We found that the salient differences were in the temporal structure of the microstates patterns, with MCI being associated with less complex sequences due to the altered transition probability, frequency and duration of canonic microstate C. Spectral content of EEG, network connectivity, and spatial arrangement of microstates were instead largely similar in the three groups. Interestingly, comparing properties of EEG microstates in different cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers profiles, we found that canonic microstate C displayed significant differences in topography in AD-like profile. These results show that the progression of dementia might be associated with a degradation of the cortical organization captured by microstates analysis, and that this leads to altered transitions between cortical states. Overall, our approach paves the way for the use of non-invasive EEG recordings in the identification of possible biomarkers of progression to AD from its prodromal states.

The EEG microstate representation of discrete emotions

Understanding how human emotions are represented in our brain is a central question in the field of affective neuroscience. While previous studies have mainly adopted a modular and static perspective on the neural representation of emotions, emerging research suggests that emotions may rely on a distributed and dynamic representation. The present study aimed to explore the EEG microstate representations for nine discrete emotions (Anger, Disgust, Fear, Sadness, Neutral, Amusement, Inspiration, Joy and Tenderness). Seventy-eight participants were recruited to watch emotion eliciting videos with their EEGs recorded. Multivariate analysis revealed that different emotions had distinct EEG microstate features. By using the EEG microstate features in the Neutral condition as the reference, the coverage of C, duration of C and occurrence of B were found to be the top-contributing microstate features for the discrete positive and negative emotions. The emotions of Disgust, Fear and Joy were found to be most effectively represented by EEG microstate. The present study provided the first piece of evidence of EEG microstate representation for discrete emotions, highlighting a whole-brain, dynamical representation of human emotions.

Microstates imbalance is associated with a functional dysregulation of the resting-state networks in obsessive-compulsive disorder: a high-density electrical neuroimaging study using the TESS method

The dysfunctional patterns of microstates dynamics in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) remain uncertain. Using high-density electrical neuroimaging (EEG) at rest, we explored microstates deterioration in OCD and whether abnormal microstates patterns are associated with a dysregulation of the resting-state networks interplay. We used EEG microstates analyses, TESS method for sources reconstruction, and General Linear Models to test for the effect of disease severity on neural responses. OCD patients exhibited an increased contribution and decreased duration of microstates C and D, respectively. Activity was decreased in the Salience Network (SN), associated with microstate C, but increased in the Default Mode Network (DMN) and Executive Control Network (ECN), respectively, associated with microstates E and D. The hyperactivity of the right angular gyrus in the ECN correlated with the symptoms severity. The imbalance between microstates C and D invalidates the hypothesis that this electrophysiological pattern is specific to psychosis. Demonstrating that the SN-ECN dysregulation manifests as abnormalities in microstates C and D, we confirm that the SN deterioration in OCD is accompanied by a failure of the DMN to deactivate and aberrant compensatory activation mechanisms in the ECN. These abnormalities explain typical OCD clinical features but also detachment from reality, shared with psychosis.

Cortical neuronal assemblies coordinate with EEG microstate dynamics during resting wakefulness

The disruption of cortical assembly activity has been associated with anesthesia-induced loss of consciousness. However, the relationship between cortical assembly activity and the variations in consciousness associated with natural vigilance states remains unclear. Here, we address this by performing vigilance state-specific clustering analysis on 2-photon calcium imaging data from the sensorimotor cortex in combination with global electroencephalogram (EEG) microstate analysis derived from multi-EEG signals obtained over widespread cortical locations. We report no difference in the structure of assembly activity during quiet wakefulness (QW), non-rapid eye movement sleep (NREMs), or REMs, despite the latter two vigilance states being associated with significantly reduced levels of consciousness relative to QW. However, we describe a significant coordination between global EEG microstate dynamics and general local cortical assembly activity during periods of QW, but not sleep. These results suggest that the coordination of cortical assembly activity with global brain dynamics could be a key factor of sustained conscious experience.

Spatio-temporal dynamics of resting-state brain networks are associated with migraine disability

OBJECTIVE

The changes in resting-state functional networks and their correlations with clinical traits remain to be clarified in migraine. Here we aim to investigate the brain spatio-temporal dynamics of resting-state networks and their possible correlations with the clinical traits in migraine.

METHODS

Twenty Four migraine patients without aura and 26 healthy controls (HC) were enrolled. Each included subject underwent a resting-state EEG and echo planar imaging examination. The disability of migraine patients was evaluated by Migraine Disability Assessment (MIDAS). After data acquisition, EEG microstates (Ms) combining functional connectivity (FC) analysis based on Schafer 400-seven network atlas were performed. Then, the correlation between obtained parameters and clinical traits was investigated.

RESULTS

Compared with HC group, the brain temporal dynamics depicted by microstates showed significantly increased activity in functional networks involving MsB and decreased activity in functional networks involving MsD; The spatial dynamics were featured by decreased intra-network FC within the executive control network( ECN) and inter-network FC between dorsal attention network (DAN) and ECN (P < 0.05); Moreover, correlation analysis showed that the MIDAS score was positively correlated with the coverage and duration of MsC, and negatively correlated with the occurrence of MsA; The FC within default mode network (DMN), and the inter-FC of ECN- visual network (VN), ECN- limbic network, VN-limbic network was negatively correlated with MIDAS. However, the FC of DMN-ECN was positively correlated with MIDAS; Furthermore, significant interactions between the temporal and spatial dynamics were also obtained.

CONCLUSIONS

Our study confirmed the notion that altered spatio-temporal dynamics exist in migraine patients during resting-state. And the temporal dynamics, the spatial changes and the clinical traits such as migraine disability interact with each other. The spatio-temporal dynamics obtained from EEG microstate and fMRI FC analyses may be potential biomarkers for migraine and with a huge potential to change future clinical practice in migraine.

EEG microstate changes according to mental fatigue induced by aircraft piloting simulation: An exploratory study

BACKGROUND

A continuous flight task load can induce fatigue and lead to changes in electroencephalography (EEG). EEG microstates can reflect the activities of large-scale neural networks during mental fatigue. This exploratory experiment explored the effects of mental fatigue induced by continuous simulated flight multitasking on EEG microstate indices.

METHODS

Twenty-four participants performed continuous 2-hour aircraft piloting simulation while EEG were recorded. The Stanford sleepiness scale (SSS) and critical flicker fusion frequency (CFF) were measured before and after the task. Microstate analysis was applied to EEG. Four microstate classes (A-D) were identified during the pre-task, post-task, beginning, and end phases. The effects of mental fatigue were analyzed.

RESULTS

Compared with the pre-task, the post-task had a higher global explained variance (GEV) and time parameters of class C but lower occurrence and coverage of class D. The end had a higher GEV but lower duration and coverage of class D than at the beginning. After 2 h of multitasking, the transition probability between A and D, and between B and D decreased but between A and C increased. Subjective fatigue scores were negatively correlated with occurrence and coverage of class D. Task performance was negatively correlated with duration and coverage of class C but positively correlated with duration and occurrence of class B.

CONCLUSION

Time parameters and transition probability of EEG microstates can detect mental fatigue induced by continuous aircraft piloting simulation. The global brain network activation of mental fatigue can be detected by EEG microstates that can evaluate flight fatigue.

Microstate analysis in infancy

BACKGROUND

Microstate analysis is an emerging method for investigating global brain connections using electroencephalography (EEG). Microstates have been colloquially referred to as the "atom of thought," meaning that from these underlying networks comes coordinated neural processing and cognition. The present study examined microstates at 6-, 8-, and 10-months of age. It was hypothesized that infants would demonstrate distinct microstates comparable to those identified in adults that also parallel resting-state networks using fMRI. An additional exploratory aim was to examine the relationship between microstates and temperament, assessed via parent reports, to further demonstrate microstate analysis as a viable tool for examining the relationship between neural networks, cognitive processes as well as emotional expression embodied in temperament attributes.

METHODS

The microstates analysis was performed with infant EEG data when the infant was either 6- (n = 12), 8- (n = 16), or 10-months (n = 6) old. The resting-state task involved watching a 1-minute video segment of Baby Einstein while listening to the accompanying music. Parents completed the IBQ-R to assess infant temperament.

RESULTS

Four microstate topographies were extracted. Microstate 1 had an isolated posterior activation; Microstate 2 had a symmetric occipital to prefrontal orientation; Microstate 3 had a left occipital to right frontal orientation; and Microstate 4 had a right occipital to left frontal orientation. At 10-months old, Microstate 3, thought to reflect auditory/language processing, became activated more often, for longer periods of time, covering significantly more time across the task and was more likely to be transitioned into. This finding is interpreted as consistent with language acquisition and phonological processing that emerges around 10-months. Microstate topographies and parameters were also correlated with differing temperament broadband and narrowband scales on the IBQ-R.

CONCLUSION

Three microstates emerged that appear comparable to underlying networks identified in adult and infant microstate literature and fMRI studies. Each of the temperament domains was related to specific microstates and their parameters. These networks also correspond with auditory and visual processing as well as the default mode network found in prior research and can lead to new investigations examining differences across stimulus presentations to further explain how infants begin to recognize, respond to, and engage with the world around them.

Multimodal Brain Signal Complexity Predicts Human Intelligence

Spontaneous brain activity builds the foundation for human cognitive processing during external demands. Neuroimaging studies based on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) identified specific characteristics of spontaneous (intrinsic) brain dynamics to be associated with individual differences in general cognitive ability, i.e., intelligence. However, fMRI research is inherently limited by low temporal resolution, thus, preventing conclusions about neural fluctuations within the range of milliseconds. Here, we used resting-state electroencephalographical (EEG) recordings from 144 healthy adults to test whether individual differences in intelligence (Raven's Advanced Progressive Matrices scores) can be predicted from the complexity of temporally highly resolved intrinsic brain signals. We compared different operationalizations of brain signal complexity (multiscale entropy, Shannon entropy, Fuzzy entropy, and specific characteristics of microstates) regarding their relation to intelligence. The results indicate that associations between brain signal complexity measures and intelligence are of small effect sizes (r ∼ 0.20) and vary across different spatial and temporal scales. Specifically, higher intelligence scores were associated with lower complexity in local aspects of neural processing, and less activity in task-negative brain regions belonging to the default-mode network. Finally, we combined multiple measures of brain signal complexity to show that individual intelligence scores can be significantly predicted with a multimodal model within the sample (10-fold cross-validation) as well as in an independent sample (external replication, N = 57). In sum, our results highlight the temporal and spatial dependency of associations between intelligence and intrinsic brain dynamics, proposing multimodal approaches as promising means for future neuroscientific research on complex human traits.

Neuroergonomics on the Go: An Evaluation of the Potential of Mobile EEG for Workplace Assessment and Design

OBJECTIVE

We demonstrate and discuss the use of mobile electroencephalogram (EEG) for neuroergonomics. Both technical state of the art as well as measures and cognitive concepts are systematically addressed.

BACKGROUND

Modern work is increasingly characterized by information processing. Therefore, the examination of mental states, mental load, or cognitive processing during work is becoming increasingly important for ergonomics.

RESULTS

Mobile EEG allows to measure mental states and processes under real live conditions. It can be used for various research questions in cognitive neuroergonomics. Besides measures in the frequency domain that have a long tradition in the investigation of mental fatigue, task load, and task engagement, new approaches-like blink-evoked potentials-render event-related analyses of the EEG possible also during unrestricted behavior.

CONCLUSION

Mobile EEG has become a valuable tool for evaluating mental states and mental processes on a highly objective level during work. The main advantage of this technique is that working environments don't have to be changed while systematically measuring brain functions at work. Moreover, the workflow is unaffected by such neuroergonomic approaches.

Are the EEG microstates correlated with motor and non-motor parameters in patients with Parkinson's disease?

OBJECTIVES

This study compared electroencephalography microstates (EEG-MS) of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) to healthy controls and correlated EEG-MS with motor and non-motor aspects of PD.

METHODS

This cross-sectional exploratory study was conducted with patients with PD (n = 10) and healthy controls (n = 10) matched by sex and age. We recorded EEG-MS using 32 channels during eyes-closed and eyes-open conditions and analyzed the four classic EEG-MS maps (A, B, C, D). Clinical information (e.g., disease duration, medications, levodopa equivalent daily dose), motor (Movement Disorder Society - Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale II and III, Timed Up and Go simple and dual-task, and Mini-Balance Evaluation Systems Test) and non-motor aspects (Mini-Mental State Exam [MMSE], verbal fluency, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire-39 [PDQ-39]) were assessed in the PD group. Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare groups, and Spearman's correlation coefficient to analyze the correlations between coverage of EEG-MS and clinical aspects of PD.

RESULTS

The PD group showed a shorter duration of EEG-MS C in the eyes-closed condition than the control group. We observed correlations (rho = 0.64 to 0.82) between EEG-MS B, C, and D and non-motor aspects of PD (MMSE, verbal fluency, PDQ-39, and levodopa equivalent daily dose).

CONCLUSION

Alterations in EEG-MS and correlations between topographies and cognitive aspects, quality of life, and medication dose indicate that EEG could be used as a PD biomarker. Future studies should investigate these associations using a longitudinal design.

Analysis of Altered Brain Dynamics During Episodic Recall and Detection of Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Numerous blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) imaging studies have shown that generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) can lead to abnormal activation of specific brain regions in patients. However, these methods lack sufficient temporal resolution to explain the underlying brain dynamics of GAD. The electroencephalogram (EEG) microstate allows us to explore brain dynamics at the subsecond level. We performed microstate analysis and source localization on the EEG data of 15 GADs and 14 healthy controls (HCs). We found two kinds of noncanonical microstate topologies (MS-4 and MS-5) in the episodic recall tasks. Compared with HCs, the duration and coverage of MS-5 were significantly reduced in GADs and positively correlated with the GAD-7 scores. The results of source localization showed obvious activation in the prefrontal lobe, parietal lobe, temporal lobe, and fusiform gyri. Moreover, we propose an improved capsule network to capture EEG spatial features and combine them with temporal parameters of microstates for more reliable GAD detection. The sensor-level EEG data and the source-level EEG data obtained by source reconstruction are used as input to the model. The optimal configuration combined the spatial features of source-level data with microstate features and achieved the highest classification accuracy. Collectively, the statistical results indicated remarkable differences in dynamic brain parameters between the two groups, and patients with GAD may have abnormalities in their higher sensory cortex that affect the processing of anxiety signals. Furthermore, our proposed fusion framework provides a reliable method for GAD automatic detection.

EEG microstate correlates of emotion dynamics and stimulation content during video watching

INTRODUCTION

EEG microstates have been widely adopted to understand the complex and dynamic-changing process in dynamic brain systems, but how microstates are temporally modulated by emotion dynamics is still unclear. An investigation of EEG microstates under video-evoking emotion dynamics modulation would provide a novel insight into the understanding of temporal dynamics of functional brain networks.

METHODS

In the present study, we postulate that emotional states dynamically modulate the microstate patterns, and perform an in-depth investigation between EEG microstates and emotion dynamics under a video-watching task. By mapping from subjective-experienced emotion states and objective-presented stimulation content to EEG microstates, we gauge the comprehensive associations among microstates, emotions, and multimedia stimulation.

RESULTS

The results show that emotion dynamics could be well revealed by four EEG microstates (MS1, MS2, MS3, and MS4), where MS3 and MS4 are found to be highly correlated to different emotion states (emotion task effect and level effect) and the affective information involved in the multimedia content (visual and audio).

CONCLUSION

In this work, we reveal the microstate patterns related to emotion dynamics from sensory and stimulation dimensions, which deepens the understanding of the neural representation under emotion dynamics modulation and will be beneficial for the future study of brain dynamic systems.

Abnormalities in electroencephalographic microstates among violent patients with schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is often associated with a remarkably increased risk of violence, which has become a public health concern and brought a great economic burden. Recent studies have reported changes in the electroencephalograms (EEG) of patients with schizophrenia. The evidence for an association between EEG and violence in patients with schizophrenia is not conclusive. This study aimed to investigate EEG microstates in violent patients with schizophrenia. Forty-three violent patients with schizophrenia (the VS group) and 51 non-violent patients with schizophrenia (the NVS group) were included, and their EEG microstates were recorded using 21-Channel EEG recordings. The two groups were compared for differences of four microstate classes (A-D) with regards to three microstate parameters (duration, occurrence, and coverage). Compared with the NVS group, the VS group exhibited increased duration, occurrence, and coverage of microstate class A and decreased occurrence of microstate class B. The VS group also had lower probabilities of transitions from "B to C" and from "C to B", as compared with the NVS group. In addition, the MOAS score was positively correlated with the duration, occurrence, and coverage of microstate A. The present study found an abnormal pattern of EEG microstates in violent patients with schizophrenia, which might help clinicians identify patients with schizophrenia who might engaged in violence as well as develop intervention strategies at an early stage.

Yield of EEG features as markers of disease severity in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: a pilot study

OBJECTIVE

To clarify the role of electroencephalography (EEG) as a promising marker of severity in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). We characterized the brain spatio-temporal patterns activity at rest by means of both spectral band powers and EEG microstates and correlated these features with clinical scores.

METHODS

Eyes closed EEG was acquired in 15 patients with ALS and spectral band power was calculated in frequency bands, defined on the basis of individual alpha frequency (IAF): delta-theta band (1-7 Hz); low alpha (IAF - 2 Hz - IAF); high alpha (IAF - IAF + 2 Hz); beta (13 - 25 Hz). EEG microstate metrics (duration, occurrence, and coverage) were also evaluated. Spectral band powers and microstate metrics were correlated with several clinical scores of disabilities and disease progression. As a control group, 15 healthy volunteers were enrolled.

RESULTS

The beta-band power in motor/frontal regions was higher in patients with higher disease burden, negatively correlated with clinical severity scores and positively correlated with disease progression. Overall microstate duration was longer and microstate occurrence was lower in patients than in controls. Longer duration was correlated with a worse clinical status.

CONCLUSIONS

Our results showed that beta-band power and microstate metrics may be good candidates of disease severity in ALS. Increased beta and longer microstate duration in clinically worse patients suggest a possible impairment of both motor and non-motor network activities to fast modify their status. This can be interpreted as an attempt in ALS patients to compensate the disability but resulting in an ineffective and probably maladaptive behavior.
