Brain-informed speech separation (BISS) for enhancement of target speaker in multitalker speech perception

Neural attentional filters and behavioural outcome follow independent individual trajectories over the adult lifespan

Preserved communication abilities promote healthy ageing. To this end, the age-typical loss of sensory acuity might in part be compensated for by an individual's preserved attentional neural filtering. Is such a compensatory brain-behaviour link longitudinally stable? Can it predict individual change in listening behaviour? We here show that individual listening behaviour and neural filtering ability follow largely independent developmental trajectories modelling electroencephalographic and behavioural data of N = 105 ageing individuals (39-82 y). First, despite the expected decline in hearing-threshold-derived sensory acuity, listening-task performance proved stable over 2 y. Second, neural filtering and behaviour were correlated only within each separate measurement timepoint (T1, T2). Longitudinally, however, our results raise caution on attention-guided neural filtering metrics as predictors of individual trajectories in listening behaviour: neither neural filtering at T1 nor its 2-year change could predict individual 2-year behavioural change, under a combination of modelling strategies.

Array configuration-agnostic personalized speech enhancement using long-short-term spatial coherence

Personalized speech enhancement (PSE) has been a field of active research for suppression of speech-like interferers, such as competing speakers or television (TV) dialogue. Compared with single-channel approaches, multichannel PSE systems can be more effective in adverse acoustic conditions by leveraging the spatial information in microphone signals. However, the implementation of multichannel PSEs to accommodate a wide range of array topology in household applications can be challenging. To develop an array configuration-agnostic PSE system, we define a spatial feature termed the long-short-term spatial coherence (LSTSC) with a dynamic forgetting factor as the input feature to a convolutional recurrent network to monitor the spatial activity of the target speaker. As another refinement, an equivalent rectangular bandwidth-scaled LSTSC feature can be used to reduce the computational cost. Experiments were conducted to compare the proposed PSE systems, including the complete and the simplified versions with four baselines using unseen room responses and array configurations (geometry and channel count) in the presence of TV noise and competing speakers. The results demonstrated that the proposed multichannel PSE network trained with the LSTSC feature with a dynamic forgetting factor achieves superior enhancement performance without precise knowledge of the array configurations and room responses.

Towards decoding selective attention through cochlear implant electrodes as sensors in subjects with contralateral acoustic hearing

Objectives: Focusing attention on one speaker in a situation with multiple background speakers or noise is referred to as auditory selective attention. Decoding selective attention is an interesting line of research with respect to future brain-guided hearing aids or cochlear implants (CIs) that are designed to adaptively adjust sound processing through cortical feedback loops. This study investigates the feasibility of using the electrodes and backward telemetry of a CI to record electroencephalography (EEG). Approach: The study population included 6 normal-hearing (NH) listeners and 5 CI users with contralateral acoustic hearing. Cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEP) and selective attention were recorded using a state-of-the-art high-density scalp EEG and, in the case of CI users, also using two CI electrodes as sensors in combination with the backward telemetry system of these devices (iEEG). Main results: In the selective attention paradigm with multi-channel scalp EEG the mean decoding accuracy across subjects was 94.8 % and 94.6 % for NH listeners and CI users, respectively. With single-channel scalp EEG the accuracy dropped but was above chance level in 8 to 9 out of 11 subjects, depending on the electrode montage. With the single-channel iEEG, the selective attention decoding accuracy could only be analyzed in 2 out of 5 CI users due to a loss of data in the other 3 subjects. In these 2 CI users, the selective attention decoding accuracy was above chance level. Significance: This study shows that single-channel EEG is suitable for auditory selective attention decoding, even though it reduces the decoding quality compared to a multi-channel approach. CI-based iEEG can be used for the purpose of recording CAEPs and decoding selective attention. However, the study also points out the need for further technical development for the CI backward telemetry regarding long-term recordings and the optimal sensor positions.

STAnet: A Spatiotemporal Attention Network for Decoding Auditory Spatial Attention from EEG

OBJECTIVE

Humans are able to localize the source of a sound. This enables them to direct attention to a particular speaker in a cocktail party. Psycho-acoustic studies show that the sensory cortices of the human brain respond to the location of sound sources differently, and the auditory attention itself is a dynamic and temporally based brain activity. In this work, we seek to build a computational model which uses both spatial and temporal information manifested in EEG signals for auditory spatial attention detection (ASAD).

METHODS

We propose an end-to-end spatiotemporal attention network, denoted as STAnet, to detect auditory spatial attention from EEG. The STAnet is designed to assign differentiated weights dynamically to EEG channels through a spatial attention mechanism, and to temporal patterns in EEG signals through a temporal attention mechanism.

RESULTS

We report the ASAD experiments on two publicly available datasets. The STAnet outperforms other competitive models by a large margin under various experimental conditions. Its attention decision for 1-second decision window outperforms that of the state-of-the-art techniques for 10-second decision window. Experimental results also demonstrate that the STAnet achieves competitive performance on EEG signals ranging from 64 to as few as 16 channels.

CONCLUSION

This study provides evidence suggesting that efficient low-density EEG online decoding is within reach.

SIGNIFICANCE

This study also marks an important step towards the practical implementation of ASAD in real life applications.

Ear-EEG-based binaural speech enhancement (ee-BSE) using auditory attention detection and audiometric characteristics of hearing-impaired subjects

Objective. Speech perception in cocktail party scenarios has been the concern of a group of researchers who are involved with the design of hearing-aid devices.Approach. In this paper, a new unified ear-EEG-based binaural speech enhancement system is introduced for hearing-impaired (HI) listeners. The proposed model, which is based on auditory attention detection (AAD) and individual hearing threshold (HT) characteristics, has four main processing stages. In the binaural processing stage, a system based on the deep neural network is trained to estimate auditory ratio masks for each of the speakers in the mixture signal. In the EEG processing stage, AAD is employed to select one ratio mask corresponding to the attended speech. Here, the same EEG data is also used to predict the HTs of listeners who participated in the EEG recordings. The third stage, called insertion gain computation, concerns the calculation of a special amplification gain based on individual HTs. Finally, in the selection-resynthesis-amplification stage, the attended speech signals of the target are resynthesized based on the selected auditory mask and then are amplified using the computed insertion gain.Main results. The detection of the attended speech and the HTs are achieved by classifiers that are trained with features extracted from the scalp EEG or the ear EEG signals. The results of evaluating AAD and HT detection show high detection accuracies. The systematic evaluations of the proposed system yield substantial intelligibility and quality improvements for the HI and normal-hearingaudiograms.Significance. The AAD method determines the direction of attention from single-trial EEG signals without access to audio signals of the speakers. The amplification procedure could be adjusted for each subject based on the individual HTs. The present model has the potential to be considered as an important processing tool to personalize the neuro-steered hearing aids.
