Abstract
Panoramic radiography imaging modality is widely used by dentists for diagnosing dental and jaw conditions. It can also detect carotid artery calcification (CAC), indicative of calcified atherosclerotic plaques in the carotid arteries. This cross-sectional retrospective study at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center investigated the link between CAC identified on panoramic radiograph (PR) and cerebrovascular accident (CVA), coronary artery disease (CAD), and poor oral health. Data from 314 CAC patients collected from 2014 to 2023 included age at diagnosis, gender, and clinical histories of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes mellitus, CVA, CAD, and the decay, missing, and filled permanent teeth (DMFT) index. These patients were age- and gender-matched with non-CAC patients for analysis. The findings revealed high prevalences of hypertension (86.2%), hyperlipidemia (57.6%), diabetes mellitus (30.7%), CVA (15.5%), and CAD (28.7%) amongst CAC patients and the average DMFT index was 26.6. A comparative analysis of 276 matched controls demonstrated significant differences in hypertension (85.9% vs. 57.6%), hyperlipidemia (58.3% vs. 33.7%), diabetes (32.6% vs. 22.1%), CVA history (14.9% vs. 5.1%), CAD (26.1% vs. 9.8%), and DMFT scores (26.3 vs. 23.7), all indicating strong associations between CAC and these health conditions. The adjusted analysis showed that hypertension (aOR: 3.20 [95% CI: 2.06-5.07]), hyperlipidemia (aOR: 1.70 [95% CI: 1.14-2.50]), CVA (aOR: 2.20 [95% CI: 1.13-4.30]), and CAD (aOR: 2.10 [95% CI: 1.28-3.60]) were significantly associated with CAC. Notably, only 41.7% of the patients received a medical consultation after CAC detection on PR. It is crucial for dentists to refer patients for further evaluation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim was to optimize diagnostics for carotid artery calcifications (CACs) on panoramic radiographs (PRs) to identify cardiovascular disease (CVD) by investigating how 4 defined CAC shapes are associated with ultrasound (US) findings indicating CVD. STUDY DESIGN The study included 414 participants (802 neck sides) from the Malmö Offspring Dental Study, examined with PRs. The PRs were assessed for CAC shapes stratified into 4 categories: single, scattered, vessel-width defining, and vessel-outlining. The carotid arteries were examined with US for signs of CVD: the presence of plaques, largest individual area of a plaque, number of plaques, and percentage reduction of the lumen. Associations between the different CAC categories and US characteristics were analyzed. RESULTS All categories of CAC were significantly associated with a higher degree of US findings indicating CVD compared with no CAC (P < .001). The most significant differences were found for vessel-outlining CAC, with the mean of the largest individual plaque area of 17.9 vs 2.3 mm2, mean number of plaques 1.6 vs 0.2, and mean percentage reduction of the lumen 24.1% vs 3.5% (all P < .001). CONCLUSIONS Independent of shape, CACs detected on PRs were associated with a higher degree of US findings of CVD. This was most pronounced for vessel-outlining CAC. With refined differential diagnostics of CACs in PRs, dentists may contribute to improved identification of patients in need of cardiovascular prevention.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study is to determine the atheromatous plaques' prevalence in orthopantomography and their relationship with periodontal disease and missing teeth. Material and Methods. Orthopantomographs of 1,254 patients over 18 years of age from Clínica Arlanza in Lerma, Burgos, were examined between 2017 and 2021. A Planmeca ProOne® orthopantomograph (68 kV, 7 mA, and 10 sg) was used. Statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS Statistics® version 25. The results of the categorical variables were described as frequencies (%). Contingency tables were made with the qualitative variables, and the chi-square test was applied to study the relationship among them. The measure of statistical power used was the relative risk (RR), which was described with its respective 95% confidence interval (CI). Student's t-test was applied to study the relationship between the qualitative variable "presence or absence of atheroma plaque" and the quantitative variable "number of teeth." Results A 6.2% prevalence of atheroma plaques was obtained from 1,079 selected X-rays. The risk in patients with periodontal disease increased as periodontal disease worsened. The risk in patients with periodontal disease increased as periodontal disease worsened as follows: healthy patients vs. periodontal patients with less than 30% bone loss in radiography: RR 0.434, 95% CI 0.181-1.041, p = 0.053 healthy patients vs. patients with between 30%-60% bone loss: RR 0.177, 95% CI 0.075-0.418, p < 0.05 healthy patients vs. patients with more than 60% bone loss: RR 0.121, 95% CI 0.041-0.355, p < 0.05. Patients with calcifications on their orthopantomograms had a lower mean teeth number (20.9 teeth) compared to patients without calcifications (24 teeth), which was statistically significant, t (1077) = -3.125, p < 0.05. Conclusions Orthopantomography can be considered a screening method to detect patients at increased cardiovascular risk who are referred for individualized study. It is important to continue research to know the real significance of these findings. Dentists should be aware of the importance of our work in our patients' systemic health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this case-control study was to investigate whether cognitively impaired individuals have a higher burden of calcified carotid artery atheroma (CCAA) than controls without cognitive impairment. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study included 154 cases with Alzheimer's disease (n = 52), mild cognitive impairment (n = 51), or subjective cognitive decline (n = 51) diagnosed at a university memory clinic. Seventy-six cognitively healthy controls were sampled through the Swedish population register. All participants underwent clinical oral and panoramic radiographic examinations. Two oral and maxillofacial radiologists performed blinded analyses of the panoramic radiographs for signs of CCAA, which was registered as absent or present and, if present, unilateral or bilateral. Consensus assessment was used for all statistical analyses. RESULTS CCAA was common (40%) in this middle-aged and older Swedish population. We found no differences in the prevalence of CCAA between cases and controls (40% vs. 42%). CONCLUSION Cognitively impaired patients do not have a higher burden of CCAA than matched controls without cognitive impairment.

Abstract
The scope of this paper was to analyze the time series of dental procedures performed between 2000 and 2016 in the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS). The data were obtained from the Outpatient Information System of the SUS (SIA-SUS). The influence of the 2004 National Oral Health Policy of Ordinance No. 600/2006 (which instituted the financing of Dental Specialty Centers - CEOs), and Ordinance No. 1,234/2013 (Financial incentive for the Program for Enhancement of Quality and Access - PMAQ-CEO) were analyzed. Descriptive analyses of the initial and final years of the time series were presented, assessing trends and seasonality in seven types of imaging procedures. The time series of rates of periapical/bitewing radiographic exams revealed a trend of moderate increase and was the only area in which the impact of the financial implementation policy of the CEOs was observed, though not of the PMAQ-CEO. Extraoral imaging exams, such as panoramic radiography, facial CT/TMJ and TMJ MRI revealed a strong upward trend, despite the very low rates. The conclusion reached is that between 2000 and 2016, the policy of expansion of secondary care increased the use of periapical/bitewing imaging exams.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the presence of soft tissue calcifications in the head and neck region on panoramic radiographs of older adults. METHODS We analysed 1176 panoramic radiographs obtained between January 2013 and December 2018 from individuals of both sexes aged 60 years or older, who were referred by dental specialities to the Dental Imaginology Service of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. The types of soft tissue calcification evaluated were as follows: carotid artery calcification (CAC), thyroid cartilage calcifications, triticeous cartilage calcifications, sialoliths, tonsilloliths and lymph node calcifications. The presence of soft tissue calcifications was correlated with age and sex. The chi-square test with continuity correction was used for the calculation of p values and the evaluation of the proposed associations. Prevalence ratios and 95% confidence intervals were also calculated. RESULTS At least one type of soft tissue calcification was found in 43% of the sample. The main calcifications detected were CAC, thyroid and triticeous cartilage calcifications, tonsilloliths, sialoliths, calcified lymph nodes, and phleboliths. Mean patient age was 67.47 years and there was a predominance of females (62.8%) in the sample. Bivariate analysis showed a statistically significant association between female sex and the presence of thyroid and triticeous cartilage calcifications and between male sex and the presence of tonsilloliths. CONCLUSION Routine panoramic radiography permits the identification of soft tissue calcifications that may be indicators of future cardiovascular disorders, the referral to a medical service and the establishment of therapies for stroke prevention.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate whether estimates of risk of future cardiovascular events and death and established or unknown diabetes are significantly associated with calcified carotid artery atheromas (CCAAs) on panoramic radiographs (PRs). The main focus was on men and women without previous myocardial infarction (MI). METHODS The PAROKRANK (Periodontitis and its Relation to Coronary Artery Disease) study included patients with a first MI and matched control subjects. In this substudy, 738 patients (138 women) and 744 control subjects (144 women) with available PRs were assessed for CCAA. Cardiovascular risk estimates were determined according to the Framingham Risk Score (FRS) and Systematic COronary Risk Evaluation (SCORE). Established and previously unknown diabetes was also determined. RESULTS CCAA was detected on PRs in 206 control subjects (28%) and 251 patients (34%). FRS was significantly associated with CCAA among control subjects (P = .04) and patients (P = .001). SCORE was associated with CCAA among control subjects (P < .01) but not patients (P = .07). Among men, FRS and SCORE were associated with CCAA in both control subjects and patients. Diabetes was not significantly associated with CCAA after adjustments. CONCLUSIONS Elevated cardiovascular risk scores were associated with CCAA on PRs among control subjects. Diabetes was not independently associated with CCAA, possibly owing to selection bias.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Panoramic images (PXs) demonstrating calcified carotid artery atheromas (CCAAs) are associated with heightened risk of near-term myocardial infarction (MI). Elevated neutrophil counts (NC) within normal range 2,500-6,000 per mm3 are likewise associated with future MI signaling the role neutrophils play in the chronic inflammation process underlying coronary artery atherogenesis. We determined if CCAAs on PXs are associated with increased NC. METHODS Investigators implemented a retrospective study of PXs and accompanying medical records of white males ≥ 65 years treated by a VA dental service. Two groups (N = 60 each) were constituted, one with atheromas (CCAA+) and one without (CCAA-). Predictor variable was CCAA + and outcome variable was NC. Bootstrapping analysis determined the difference in mean NCs between two groups, significance set at ≤0.05. RESULTS The study group of (CCAA+) (mean age 75.9; range 69-91 years) demonstrated a mean NC of 4,843 per mm3 and control group (CCAA-) (mean age 75.3; range; 66-94) a mean NC of 4,108 per mm3. The difference between the groups was significant (p = 0.0008) (95% CI of difference of mean: -432, 431; observed effect size 736). CONCLUSIONS CCAAs on PXs of elderly white males are associated with elevated NC; amplifying need for medical consultation prior to invasive dental procedures.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the predictive value of carotid artery calcifications (CACs) seen on dental imaging for future adverse events related to cerebrovascular and cardiovascular diseases. METHODS Electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, SCOPUS and Cochrane) and selected grey literature were searched. Outcomes included stroke, transient ischaemic attack (TIA), myocardial infarction (MI), angina, heart failure, future interventional revascularization procedures and death. Risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. RESULTS 5 studies were selected from 1011 records. All were of moderate to low risk of bias. Results were heterogeneous but showed that patients with CACs on panoramic radiographs (PANs) were more likely to experience strokes, TIA, MI and future revascularization procedures compared to control groups. The differences between groups were not all found to be statistically significant. Bilateral vessel-outlining CACs were an independent risk marker for future vascular events. Patients who are not currently being managed for cardiovascular risk factors should be referred for further evaluation. Those already being treated for atherosclerosis may not benefit from additional investigations. CONCLUSION The evidence for the predictive value of CACs on PANs for adverse future vascular events is equivocal but can help to identify at-risk patients who require further evaluation. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Dentists must be able to recognize CACs on PANs and make appropriate referrals for patients to be evaluated for cardiovascular risk factors, especially those who have not previously been assessed.

Abstract
PURPOSE Atherosclerotic plaques develop as a result of a low-grade, chronic, systemic inflammatory response to the injury of endothelial cells arising from lipid deposition within the intima. Increased white blood cell count (WBCC) is both a validated "biologic marker" of the extent of this inflammatory process and a key participant in the development of subsequent atherosclerotic ischemic heart disease manifesting as myocardial infarction. We sought to determine if calcified carotid artery plaque (CCAP) on a panoramic image (PI), also a validated risk indicator of future myocardial infarction, is associated with increased WBCC. PATIENTS AND METHODS We retrospectively evaluated the PI and medical records of White male military veterans aged 55 years and older treated by a VA dental service. Established were 2 cohorts of patients, 50 having plaques (CCAP+) and 50 without plaques (CCAP-). Predictor variable was CCAP+; outcome variable was WBCC. Bootstrapping analysis determined the differences in mean WBCCs between groups. Statistical significance set at ≤ 0.05. RESULTS The study group, (mean age 74; range 59 to 91 years) demonstrated a mean WBCC of 8,062 per mm3. The control group, (mean age 72 range; 57 to 94) evidenced a mean WBCC of 7,058 per mm3. Bootstrapping analysis of WBCC values demonstrated a significant (P = .012) difference (95% confidence interval of difference of mean, -806, 742; observed effect size, 1004) between groups. CONCLUSIONS The presence of CCAP demonstrated on PIs of older Caucasian men is associated with elevated WBCC. Concomitant presence of CCAP on PI and increased WBCC (≥7,800 per mm3) amplifies need for medical consultation before intravenous anesthesia and maxillofacial surgical procedures.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION We have previously shown that panoramic X-rays (PXs) demonstrating calcified carotid artery atheromas (CCAA) are associated with increased systemic inflammation demonstrating increased neutrophil lymphocyte ratios (NLRs), a validated risk indicator of fatal myocardial infarctions arising from coronary artery atherosclerosis. Using this same cohort of patients (with minor adjustments because of missing data), we sought to determine if a like association existed between PXs evidencing CCAA and elevated red blood cell distribution width (RDW) given conflicting data as its reliability relative to NLR as a biologic marker of system inflammation. We hypothesized that CCAAs on PXs would simultaneously be associated with both increased NLR and RDW. MATERIALS AND METHODS Investigators implemented a cross-sectional study design. Study sample consisted of patient medical records and PXs of white men ≥ 55 years. Two groups (N = 50 each) were constituted, one with atheromas (CCAA+) and without atheromas (CCAA-). The predictor variable was CCAA+ and outcome variables were NLR and RDW. Bootstrapping analysis was employed to analyze the differences in mean NLRs and RDWs between groups since the data was not normally distributed. Statistical significance determined to be ≤ 0.05 for all tests. The Medical Center's Institutional Review Board approved the research protocol. RESULTS A study group of 50 CCAA+ men (mean age 71; range 58-89 years) demonstrated a mean NLR of 2.98 ± 1.38 and an RDW of 13.21 ± 0.85. A control group of 50 CCAA- males (mean age 70 range; 55-91 years) evidenced a mean NLR of 2.38 ± 0.77 and an RDW of 13.16 ± 0.77. Bootstrapping comparison of NLR values evidenced significant (P = 0.008) difference (95% confidence interval of difference of mean: - 0.4272, 0.4384; observed effect size: 0.579) between groups; however, there was no significant difference in RDW values between the groups. Furthermore, logistic regression modeling demonstrated that for a one unit increase in NLR the odds of being CCAA+ (vs. CCAA-) increases by a factor of 1.659. CONCLUSION The existence of CCAA seen on PXs of elderly white men is associated with significantly (P = 0.008) elevated NLR values but is not associated with increases in RDW.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The main purpose of this study is to determine the presence of carotid artery calcification (CAC) detected on digital panoramic radiographs (DPRs) retrospectively and correlate the findings with cardiovascular risk factors including gender, age, smoking status, hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia, along with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and periodontal status. METHODS This clinical study is registered at ClinicalTrials.gov as NCT04017078. DPRs, periodontal status and cardiovascular risk factors of 1,101 patients (576 males, 525 females) were evaluated. The patients were grouped based on whether CAC was detected in dental DPRs [CAC (+)] or not [CAC (-)]. Periodontal status was categorised as gingivitis, periodontitis, and gingivitis with reduced periodontium (periodontally stable patient). RESULTS Out of 1,101 patients, whose mean age was 42.1 ± 15.5 years and 525 (47.7%) were female, 34 (3.1%) were diagnosed with CAC on DPRs. No significant difference was observed between groups considering gender, hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, smoking, and periodontal status. Patients aged 40-55 years (n = 398, 36.15%) and patients older than 55 years (n = 222, 20.16%) were associated with CAC (odds ratio = 4.49, 95% confidence interval = 1.65-12.17, P = 0.003; odds ratio = 4.41, 95% confidence interval = 1.33-14.61, P = 0.015, respectively). CONCLUSION Among all parameters, only age exhibited significant correlation with an increased risk of carotid calcification. Further studies with prospective designs and larger study populations are needed.

Abstract
AIM To study the prevalence of carotid artery calcification (CAC) in relation to apical and marginal periodontitis, subgingival dysbiotic bacterial species and serum and saliva immune responses against them. In addition, the aim was to analyse the association of CAC with angiographically verified coronary artery disease (CAD) and mortality. METHODOLOGY In the present random Parogene cohort, the patients had an indication for coronary angiography. Apical and marginal periodontitis were diagnosed during clinical and radiographic oral examinations, and CAC on panoramic radiographs (n = 492). Presence and severity of CAD were registered from angiography. Subgingival dysbiotic bacterial species were quantitated using checkerboard DNA-DNA-hybridization, and serum and saliva antibody levels were determined by immunoassays. The cohort was followed-up for 10 years or until death (median 9.9, range 0.21-10.4) via linkage to the national death register. The statistical models were adjusted for age, gender, smoking, hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidemia. RESULTS A total of 102 (20.7%) patients had detectable CAC, which was moderate in 81 (16.4%) and severe in 21 (4.3%). CAC was associated (OR, 95% CI) with severe apical periodontitis (2.25, 1.15-4.41), root canal fillings (1.15, 1.04-1.26), alveolar bone loss (2.66, 1.21-5.84), severe periodontal inflammation (2.23, 1.11-4.47), high level of gram-negative subgingival species (2.73, 1.34-5.50), saliva IgG against dysbiotic species (1.05, 1.01-1.10/unit) and severe (2.58, 1.36-4.90) and chronic (2.13, 1.15-3.93) CAD. A total of 105 (20.7%) patients died during the follow-up and 53 (10.4%) deaths were because of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Severe CAC predicted worse survival with HRs (95% CI) of 3.08 (1.58-6.06) for all-cause and 3.43 (1.42-8.25) for CVD death. CONCLUSIONS CAC on panoramic tomography was associated with (i) apical and marginal periodontitis and dysbiotic bacterial species giving rise to an immunological response, and with (ii) severe, chronic CAD and increased mortality. The results further emphasize the role of oral infections in CAD and the importance of referring a patient with CAC for a cardiovascular evaluation.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease is a common cause of morbidity and premature mortality. Cardiovascular disease can be prevented when risk factors are identified early. Calcified carotid artery atheromas (CCAAs), detected in panoramic radiographs, and periodontitis have both been associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease. This case-control study aimed to 1) investigate associations between periodontitis and CCAA detected in panoramic radiographs and 2) determine the risk of future myocardial infarctions due to CCAA combined with periodontitis. We evaluated 1,482 participants (738 cases and 744 controls) with periodontitis and CCAAs recruited from the PAROKRANK study (Periodontitis and Its Relation to Coronary Artery Disease). Participants were examined with panoramic radiographs, including the carotid regions. Associations between myocardial infarction and periodontitis combined with CCAA were evaluated in 696 cases and 696 age-, sex-, and residential area–matched controls. Periodontitis was evaluated radiographically (as degree of bone loss) and with a clinical periodontal disease index score (from clinical and radiographic assessments). We found associations between CCAA and clinical periodontal disease index score among cases (odds ratio [OR], 1.51; 95% CI, 1.09 to 2.10; P = 0.02) and controls (OR, 1.70; 95% CI, 1.22 to 2.38; P < 0.01), although not between CCAA and the degree of bone loss. In a multivariable model, myocardial infarction was associated with CCAA combined with periodontitis, as assessed by degree of bone loss (OR, 1.75; 95% CI, 1.11 to 2.74; P = 0.01). When the cohort was stratified by sex, only men showed a significant association between myocardial infarction and CCAA combined with periodontitis. Participants with clinically diagnosed periodontitis exhibited CCAA in panoramic radiographs more often than those without periodontitis, irrespective of the presence of a recent myocardial infarction. Participants with combined periodontitis and CCAA had a higher risk of having had myocardial infarction as compared with participants with either condition alone. These findings implied that patients in dental care might benefit from dentists assessing panoramic radiographs for CCAA—particularly, patients with periodontitis who have not received any preventive measures for cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
Background: This study sought to determine the prevalence of carotid artery calcifications (CACs) and pulp stones detected on panoramic radiographs (PRs) and ascertain their correlation. Methods: A total of 2013 digital PRs were retrospectively retrieved and thoroughly examined to determine the prevalence of CACs and pulp stones, their correlation with patient age and gender, and the relationship between the presence of pulps stones and radiographically detectable CACs. Results: The prevalence of CACs on PRs was 2.0%; the prevalence of pulp stones was 4.6%. There was no statistical relationship between pulp stones and CACs (p = 0.714). Older patients exhibited a significantly higher prevalence of CACs than younger patients (p < 0.001); pulp stones were statistically more prevalent in younger patients than older patients (p = 0.001). There were no significant differences between male and females in terms of the prevalence of either CACs or pulp stones (p = 0.087 and p = 0.278, respectively). Conclusions: Dentists should be trained to detect CACs on PRs belonging to patients older than 40 to exclude the presence of CACs. Moreover, pulp stones do not function as a diagnostic marker for CACs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Males with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) are at high risk of ischaemic stroke given that atherogenic risk factors for both diseases are similar. We hypothesized that neurologically asymptomatic males diagnosed with PAD would demonstrate calcified carotid artery plaques (CCAP) on panoramic images (PI) significantly more often than similarly aged males not having PAD. METHODS Investigators implemented a retrospective cross-sectional study. Subjects were male patients over age 50 diagnosed with PAD by ankle-brachial systolic pressure index results of ≤ 0.9. Controls negative for PAD had an ankle-brachial systolic pressure index > 0.9. Predictor variable was a diagnosis of PAD and outcome variable was presence of CCAP. Prevalence of CCAP amongst the PAD+ patients was compared to prevalence of CCAP among PAD- patients. Descriptive and bivariate statistics were computed and p-value was set at 0.05. RESULTS Final sample size consisted of 234 males (mean age 72.68 ± 9.09); 116 subjects and 118 controls. Among the PAD+ cohort, CCAP+ prevalence rate (57.76%) was significantly (p = 0.001) greater than the CCAP+ rate (36.44%) of the PAD- (control). There was no significant difference in atherogenic "risk factors" in the PAD+ cohort between CCAP+ and CCAP- subjects. CONCLUSION We demonstrated that CCAP, a "risk factor" for future stroke and "risk indicator" of future myocardial infarction is seen significantly more often detected on the PIs of older male patients with PAD than among those without. Dentists treating patients with PAD must be uniquely vigilant for the presence of CCAPs on their patients' PI.

Abstract
PURPOSE To study general dental practitioners (GDPs) ability to detect calcified carotid artery atheromas (CCAAs) in panoramic radiographs (PRs) and if their diagnostic accuracy in long term is improved after a short training programme. METHODS Fourteen GDPs had their diagnostic accuracy regarding CCAA in PR assessed at baseline, 2 weeks and 1 year after training. Comparison was made with a reference standard based on consensus results from two experienced oral and maxillofacial radiologists. At each session, 100 radiographs were assessed individually by the GDPs. After the baseline assessment, the GDPs participated in a 2-hour training programme comprising a lecture and diagnostic training by calibration. The GDPs results before and after training were compared, as well as between follow-up sessions. RESULTS A significant improvement in diagnostic accuracy was observed with increased sensitivity (from 41.8% to 55.7%, P = 0.02) without a significant decrease in specificity (from 87.2% to 86.7%, P = 0.87). The Kappa values also increased (from 0.66 to 0.71, P = 0.04). At 1-year follow-up, the improvement compared to baseline remained significant. There were no significant changes between the 2-week and 1-year follow-up assessment. CONCLUSION A short training programme can significantly and sustainable improve GDPs diagnostic accuracy regarding CCAA.

Abstract
PURPOSE Hypoxemia and hypertension caused by obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) often result in atherosclerosis of the carotid and coronary vessels and heightened risk of stroke and myocardial infarction (MI). Therefore, this study investigated whether severity of OSA, based on the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), is associated with the presence of calcified carotid artery (atherosclerotic) plaque (CCAP) seen on panoramic images (PIs). MATERIALS AND METHODS Using a cross-sectional study design, the electronic medical records and PIs of all male patients referred from the sleep medicine service to the dental service from 2010 through 2016 were reviewed. The predictor variable was the patients' OSA intensity level as defined by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine based on the AHI score. The outcome variable was the presence of CCAP on the PI. Other variables of interest, that is, demographic and atherogenic risk factors (age, body mass index, diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia), were included in a multivariate analysis to assess the association of OSA with CCAP. RESULTS The study sample consisted of 108 men (mean age, 54.7 ± 13.5 yr). Approximately one third (n = 33; 30.6%) presented with CCAP and this group was significantly older with greater odds of co-diagnosis of diabetes (P < .05). Patients with more "severe" OSA showed significantly greater odds of having CCAP on their PIs compared with those with "milder" OSA (odds ratio = 1.035; 95% confidence interval, 1.008-1.062; P = .010) when adjusted for confounders. CONCLUSION There is a significant association between severity of OSA and the presence of CCAP visible on PI. These atherosclerotic plaques are "risk factors" for stroke and "risk indicators" for future MI; therefore, clinicians providing corrective airway surgery for these patients and noting concomitant CCAP on PI should refer these patients for a thorough cerebrovascular and cardiovascular workup.

Abstract
PURPOSE Men with alcohol-related chronic pancreatitis (ARCP) resulting in type 3c diabetes mellitus (DM) are at a uniquely elevated risk of adverse ischemic events given the role of inflammation in both the underlying disease processes and atherosclerosis. We hypothesized that their panoramic images would show a prevalence of calcified carotid artery atheromas (calcified carotid artery plaques [CCAPs]) significantly more often than a general population of similarly aged men. PATIENTS AND METHODS We implemented a retrospective observational study. The sample was composed of male patients older than 30 years having panoramic images. The predictor variable was a diagnosis of ARCP-DM, and the outcome variable was the prevalence rate of CCAPs. The prevalence of CCAPs among the patients with ARCP-DM was then compared with that of a historical general population composed of similarly aged men. Descriptive and bivariate statistics were computed, and the P value was set at .05. RESULTS Of the 32 men (mean age, 61.7 ± 11.2 years) with ARCP-DM, 8 (25%) (mean age, 63.3 ± 4.80 years) had atheromas (CCAPs). There was a statistically significant (P < .05) association between a diagnosis of ARCP-DM and the presence of an atheroma on the panoramic image in comparison with the 3% rate manifested by the historical general-population cohort. The presence or absence of classic atherogenic risk factors within the ARCP-DM cohort failed to distinguish between individuals with and individuals without atheroma formation on their panoramic images. CONCLUSIONS The results of this study suggest that CCAP, a risk indicator for future adverse cardiovascular events, is frequently seen on the panoramic images of male patients with ARCP-DM. Dentists treating male patients with the disorder must be uniquely vigilant for the presence of these lesions.
