An Unusual Presentation of Retinal Detachment and Conjunctivitis: A Case Report

Introduction: Vision loss is an ophthalmologic emergency with broad differential requiring prompt medical attention. Case Report: We describe a 55-year-old male presenting to the emergency department (ED) with unilateral, painless visual field deficit with ipsilateral conjunctivitis induced by a presumed foreign body. The patient described a foreign body sensation nine days prior to developing visual changes. In the ED, the patient was diagnosed with a retinal detachment using point-of-care ultrasonography, and emergent ophthalmologic consultation was obtained. Conclusion: Concurrent retinal detachment and conjunctivitis in a patient is extremely rare. Healthcare providers should be aware that foreign body-induced conjunctivitis could lead to retinal detachment.

Rapid and complete vision loss due to idiopathic orbital inflammation with partial recovery following orbital decompression

We present a case of a 36-year-old man who developed rapid onset of proptosis and orbital compartment syndrome resulting in no light perception vision. He was treated with surgery and subsequent rituximab therapy with some recovery of vision and motility. Though the range of presentations of idiopathic orbital inflammation is broad, such rapid evolution of proptosis with complete vision loss is very uncommon.

Case of Orbital Mucosa-Associated Lymphoid Tissue Lymphoma Associated with Serous Retinal Detachment

We present a case of orbital mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma accompanied by a serous retinal detachment (SRD). A 44-year-old man who developed uveitis accompanied by a SRD in the right eye was referred to the Chiba National Hospital. B-mode ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a thickened choroidal membrane and a retrobulbar mass. Although topical steroid treatments improved the inflammation, the SRD did not improve. He was then referred to the Chiba University Hospital. Two months later, the retrobulbar mass had increased, and a partial resection biopsy combined with flow cytometry was performed. The final diagnosis was MALT lymphoma. After R-CHOP (rituximab-cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisolone) chemotherapy, signs of the tumour could not be detected and the SRD was reduced. We conclude that the SRD was most likely due to the infiltration of lymphoma cells and also to choroidal circulatory disturbances. Retrobulbar malignant lymphomas associated with a SRD are very rare and difficult to diagnosis without biopsy, but because early diagnosis is helpful in deciding the appropriate therapy, we recommend partial biopsy.

Systemic steroid-pulse therapy in a patient with idiopathic choroidal detachment: a case report

Aim

To report on the effectiveness of systemic steroid-pulse therapy in treating idiopathic choroidal detachment.

Case Presentation

Our patient developed idiopathic choroidal detachment after cataract surgery for pseudoexfoliation glaucoma and glaucoma filtration surgery. Systemic steroid-pulse therapy was performed, and the choroidal detachment resolved completely.

Conclusion

We suggest systemic steroid-pulse therapy as a treatment option for idiopathic choroidal detachment with low intraocular pressure.
