Which types of giving are associated with reduced mortality risk among older adults?

A systematic review and meta-analysis of the relationship between economic inequality and prosocial behaviour

How does economic inequality relate to prosocial behaviour? Existing theories and empirical studies from multiple disciplines have produced mixed results. Here we conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to systematically synthesize empirical studies. Results from 192 effect sizes and over 2.5 million observations in 100 studies show that the relationship varies from being negative to positive depending upon the study (95% prediction interval -0.450 to 0.343). However, on average, there is a small, negative relationship between economic inequality and prosocial behaviour (r = -0.064, P = 0.004, 95% confidence interval -0.106 to -0.021). There is generally no evidence that results depend upon characteristics of the studies, participants, the way prosocial behaviour and inequality were assessed, and the publication discipline. Given the prevalence of economic inequality and the importance of prosocial behaviour, this systematic review and meta-analysis provides a timely study on the relationship between economic inequality and prosocial behaviour.

The health advantage of volunteering is larger for older and less healthy volunteers in Europe: a mega-analysis

There is a vast literature on the health benefits associated with volunteering for volunteers. Such health advantages are likely to vary across groups of volunteers with different characteristics. The current paper aims to examine the health advantages of volunteering for European volunteers and explore heterogeneity in the association between volunteering and health. We carry out a mega-analysis on microdata from six panel surveys, covering 952,026 observations from 267,212 respondents in 22 European countries. We provide open access to the code we developed for data harmonization. We use ordinary least squares, fixed effects, first difference, and fixed effect quantile regressions to estimate how volunteering activities and changes therein are related to self-rated health for different groups. Our results indicate a small but consistently positive association between changes in volunteering and changes in health within individuals. This association is stronger for older adults. For respondents 60 years and older, within-person changes in volunteering are significantly related to changes in self-rated health. Additionally, the health advantage of volunteering is larger for respondents in worse health. The advantage is largest at the lowest decile and gradually declines along the health distribution. The magnitude of the association at the first decile is about twice the magnitude of the association at the ninth decile. These results suggest that volunteering may be more beneficial for the health of specific groups in society. With small health advantages from year to year, volunteering may protect older and less healthy adults from health decline in the long run.

Retrospective evaluation of a pilot eHealth/mHealth telewellness program for people with disabilities: Mindfulness, Exercise, and Nutrition To Optimize Resilience (MENTOR)

BACKGROUND

People with disabilities have few options to participate in wellness programs that are tailored to their health, functional level, specific interests/needs, and available in the comfort of their home. To address this need, we evaluated a mobile health wellness program for people with physical disabilities.

METHODS

Retrospective pilot evaluation of MENTOR (Mindfulness, Exercise, and Nutrition To Optimize Resilience), an 8-week, 40-hour online telewellness program adapted from the peer reviewed literature on wellness. The three core wellness domains-mindfulness, exercise, and nutrition-were delivered via Zoom to groups of participants with a disability. Each group met weekly with an assigned health coach who responded to Q&A about the program and presented new material on several additional wellness domains that could impact their health (e.g., relationships, contribution to society/community, spending outdoor time in nature). Pre/post measures included the Godin Leisure-Time Exercise Questionnaire (GLTEQ) and the UAB/Lakeshore Wellness Assessment (LWA). Participants were also interviewed and provided feedback after the program, which was thematically analyzed.

RESULTS

A total of 154 people from 15 states enrolled in the MENTOR program and 135 completed it (87.7% completers). Data were analyzed from a subset of participants (n=53) who were asked to complete a pre/post assessment and had complete data. Participants who were physically inactive at baseline improved their GLTEQ total activity (P=0.002; effect size =0.56) and moderate-to-vigorous activity scores (P=0.005; effect size =0.53). LWA results demonstrated that participants increased their exercise behavior (P=0.006; effect sizes =0.39) and contribution to society/community (P=0.013; effect size =0.37). Participants with low overall wellness (mental, physical & emotional health) at baseline had statistically significant improvements in exercise, nutrition, sleep, core values, self-care, hobbies, contribution to society/community, relationships, and overall wellness (all P<0.05 with effect sizes ranging from 0.43 to 1.07). Resultant qualitative themes were: (I) lifestyle transformation occurred through new positive experiences, physical and mental health benefits, and adoption of healthy behaviors; and (II) engagement through accessible online bonding through enjoyable and professional experiences.

CONCLUSIONS

A pilot telewellness program for people with disabilities is feasible and potentially effective in improving several domains of wellness. There is a need for precision-based mobile health (mHealth) programs that are tailored for people with disabilities and that can be accessed from various portable devices including their phone and/or tablet.

The balance of giving versus receiving social support and all-cause mortality in a US national sample

While numerous studies exist on the benefits of social support (both receiving and giving), little research exists on how the balance between the support that individuals regularly give versus that which they receive from others relates to physical health. In a US national sample of 6,325 adults from the National Survey of Midlife Development in the United States, participants were assessed at baseline on hours of social support given and received on a monthly basis, with all-cause mortality data collected from the National Death Index over a 23-y follow-up period. Participants who were relatively balanced in the support they gave compared to what they received had a lower risk of all-cause mortality than those who either disproportionately received support from others (e.g., received more hours of support than they gave each month) or disproportionately gave support to others (e.g., gave many more hours of support a month than they received). These findings applied to instrumental social support (e.g., help with transportation, childcare). Additionally, participants who gave a moderate amount of instrumental social support had a lower risk of all-cause mortality than those who either gave very little support or those who gave a lot of support to others. Associations were evident over and above demographic, medical, mental health, and health behavior covariates. Although results are correlational, one interpretation is that promoting a balance, in terms of the support that individuals regularly give relative to what they receive in their social relationships, may not only help to strengthen the social fabric of society but may also have potential physical health benefits.
