Abstract
This study examined the behavioral responses, purinergic receptor densities, ectonucleotidases (E-NTPDase), adenosine deaminase (ADA) activity, and nitric oxide (NO) levels along with the parameters of oxidative stress-related to erectile function in the cerebral cortex (CC) of L-NAME-challenged rats pretreated with tigernut (TN) and walnut (WN) dietary supplementation. Wistar rats (male) of 70 total animals (250-300 g) were used in this research and hence separated into seven groups (n = 10): Group I: normal control-fed basal diet; Group II: positive control-fed basal diet/L-NAME/Sildenafil citrate (5 mg kg-1 day-1 ); Group III: ED-induced (placed on a basal diet/L-NAME); Group IV: diet supplemented with processed TN (20%)/L-NAME; Group V: diet supplemented with raw TN (20%)/L-NAME; Group VI: diet supplemented with processed WN (20%)/L-NAME; and Group VII placed on a diet supplemented with raw WN (20%)/L-NAME. The rats were pretreated for 2 weeks before the L-NAME (40 mg kg-1 day-1 ) challenge on their respective diet. L-NAME brought about a decrease in the sexual behaviors evaluated while the effect was significantly reversed by supplemented diets containing TN and WN. L-NAME increased the levels of reactive oxygen species and malondialdehyde, E-NTPDase as well as ADA activities, and caused the level of NO in the CC as well as the purinoreceptor densities to be downregulated. Treatments with enriched diets, however, greatly reverse these effects. The behavioral responses and neuromodulatory capacity of the nuts displayed on the CC can, therefore, further support their aphrodisiac property. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: The results revealed the ability of tigernut (TN; Cyperus esculentus L.) and walnut (WN; Tetracarpidium conophorum Müll. Arg.) to enhance behavioral responses; modulate purinergic receptor densities, E-NTPDase, and ADA activities; increase NO levels; and prevent oxidative stress related to erectile function in the CC of L-NAME-challenged Wistar rats. The results show that these nuts are useful feeds for both animal and human nutrition.

Abstract
Berberine is an isoquinoline alkaloid, found in several plants. Diabetes induces erectile dysfunction (ED) via reduction in some hormones and enzymes implicated in sexual function. This study aimed to investigate the role of berberine on crucial biomolecules linked to penile function in diabetic rats. Sixty-three (63) adult male rats were used and distributed into nine groups (each = 7). Group I-IV normal rats administered with citrate buffer (pH 4.5), sildenafil citrate (SD, 5.0 mg/kg), 50 and 100 mg/kg of berberine, respectively, via oral gavage. Rats in groups V-IX were diabetic rat with ED treated with buffer, SD, 50 and 100 mg/kg of berberine, and acarbose (25 mg/kg ACA) respectively. The result revealed that histological architecture in penile tissues were altered in diabetic groups treated with berberine, sildenafil citrate and acarbose when compared to the diabetic control group. Treatment with berberine, increased testosterone, luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone in diabetic rat with ED. Also, reduced prolactin level and acetylcholinesterase, angiotensin-1 converting enzyme, adenosine deaminase and arginase activities were observed in berberine treated diabetic rat with ED. Molecular docking analysis revealed that berberine had strong binding affinities for these enzymes. Thus, berberine could represent a potential therapeutic agent for diabetes-induced ED.

Abstract
This study sought to investigate the effect of β-caryophyllene (BCP) on sexual performance, crucial enzymes linked to erectile function as well as lipid peroxidation in the penile tissue of paroxetine (PD)-induced rats. Animals were randomly divided into ten groups of five animals each: normal control (NC), BCP (10 mg/kg), BCP (20 mg/kg), sildenafil citrate (SD) (20 mg/kg), BCP + SD (20 mg/kg), PD (20 mg/kg), PD + BCP (10 mg/kg), PD + BCP (20 mg/kg), PD + SD (20 mg/kg) and PD + BCP (20 mg/kg) + SD (20 mg/kg). Oral administration of 20 mg/kg body weight of PD for the first 7 days was done while treatment with BCP and SD were performed between 8 and 14 days prior to euthanasia. The sexual performance study revealed that PD caused erectile dysfuction. Elevated activities of phosphodiesterase-5' (PDE-5'), arginase, adenosine deaminase (ADA), acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and angiotensin-I converting enzyme (ACE) as well as lipid peroxidation level were observed in PD-induced rats when compared to the NC group. However, treatment with sildenafil and/ or β-Caryophyllene significantly reduced the activities of AChE, PDE-5', arginase, ADA, and ACE in penile tissues of PD-induced rats. In addition, co-administration of β-caryophyllene and sildenafil citrate showed better modulatory effects. Thus, β-caryophyllene could represent a potential nutraceutical in the management of erectile dysfunction.

Abstract
Normal or dysfunctional sexual behavior seems to be an important indicator of health or disease. Many health disorders in male patients affect sexual activity by directly causing erectile dysfunction, affecting sexual motivation, or both. Clinical evidence indicates that many diseases strongly disrupt sexual motivation and sexual performance in patients with depression, addiction, diabetes mellitus and other metabolic disturbances with obesity and diet-related factors, kidney and liver failure, circadian rhythm disorders, sleep disturbances including obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, developmental and hormonal disorders, brain damages, cardiovascular diseases, and peripheral neuropathies. Preclinical studies of these conditions often require appropriate experimental paradigms, including animal models. Male sexual behavior and motivation have been intensively investigated over the last 80 years in animal rat model. Sexual motivation can be examined using such parameters as: anticipatory behavior and 50-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations reflecting the emotional state of rats, initiation of copulation, efficiency of copulation, or techniques of classical (pavlovian) and instrumental conditioning. In this review article, we analyze the behavioral parameters that describe the sexual motivation and sexual performance of male rats in the context of animal experimental models of human health disorders. Based on analysis of the parameters describing the heterogeneous and complex structure of sexual behavior in laboratory rodents, we propose an approach that is useful for delineating distinct mechanisms affecting sexual motivation and sexual performance in selected disease states and the efficacy of therapy in preclinical investigations.

Abstract
RATIONALE Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP) is known to promote reproductive functions. However, its role in noncontact erection (NCE) of penis initiated by brain regions including medial preoptic area (MPOA) and paraventricular nucleus (PVN) regions responsible for sexual behavior has not been investigated. OBJECTIVES Therefore, this study initially investigated the effects of LBP on male sexual function, and subsequently, the mechanistic insight was investigated through assessing the expression of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) in the MPOA and PVN. METHODS The adult male rats were treated with 100 mg/kg of LBP or vehicle by oral gavage. Before and after 14 days of treatment, copulatory behavior and noncontact erection (NCE) were recorded. After the last behavioral test, the brain was isolated to measure nNOS expression in the MPOA and PVN. RESULTS Data showed that LBP treatment significantly increased both the frequencies of intromission as well as ejaculation, compared to the control group. Whereas, a reduced post-ejaculatory interval was observed compared to same group on day 0. Furthermore, the treatment led to an increased intromission ratio, inter-intromission interval, and the number of MPOA nNOS-immunoreactive cells (nNOS-ir). Additionally, a significantly positive correlation between ejaculation frequency and MPOA nNOS-ir cells was recorded. Of note, LBP treatment had no effects on NCE and PVN nNOS-ir expression. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that LBP enhances sexual behavior through increased nNOS expression in the MPOA in male rats.
