Adhesive Bond Strength of Restorative Materials to Caries-Affected Dentin Treated with Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Objective: This systematic review aimed to evaluate the adhesive bond strength of restorative materials to caries-affected dentin (CAD) treated with antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) in comparison with conventional chemical disinfectants. Methods: Three databases, including the Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed, were searched to address the focused question: "What is the effect of aPDT compared to conventional chemical disinfection techniques on the adhesive bond strength of restorative materials to CAD?." Search keywords included "dentin*" "adhes bond*" "caries-affected dentin" "photodynamic "photochemotherapy" "photosensitizing agent" "phototherapy" "photoradiation" "laser" "light activated" "photoactivated." A fixed-effects model was used in each meta-analysis and the inverse variance was used to calculate the standard mean difference (SMD). For evaluating the statistical heterogeneity, the Cochrane's Q test and the I2 statistics were used. The risk of bias was evaluated based on the Cochrane Collaboration's tool. Results: Fourteen studies were included in the qualitative as well as quantitative analysis. The results of the meta-analyses exhibited an SMD of 2.38% [95% confidence interval (CI): 2.03-2.73; p < 0.00001], indicating a statistically significant difference in the shear bond strength scores between the tested group (samples treated with aPDT) and the control group (i.e., favoring the sound dentin and/or conventional chemical disinfectants). Contrarily, an SMD of -1.46% (95% CI: -2.04 to -0.88; p < 0.00001) and -0.37% (95% CI: -0.70 to -0.03; p = 0.03) was observed, indicating a statistically significant difference in the microtensile bond strength (μTBS), as well as microleakage scores between the tested group (favoring the samples treated with aPDT) and the control group (i.e., sound dentin and/or conventional chemical disinfectants). Conclusions: Adhesive bond strength of restorative materials to CAD treated with conventional chemical disinfectants showed superior outcomes compared to photodynamic therapy (aPDT).

Poly-Ether Ether-Ketone Post Conditioned with Sulfuric Acid, Rose Bengal Activated by Photodynamic Therapy and Sandblasting on Pushout Bond Strength to Radicular Dentin Luted with Methyl Methacrylate and Composite-Based Cement

Objective: Assessment of post surface conditioners [sulfuric acid (SA), Rose Bengal (RB), and sandblasting (SB)] and different luting cements [methyl methacrylate (MMA)-based cement and composite-based cement] on pushout bond strength (PBS) of poly-ether ether-ketone (PEEK) post bonded to canal dentin. Materials and methods: Endodontic treatment was performed on 120 single-rooted human premolar teeth. The preparation of the post space was performed and 4 mm of gutta-percha was retained in the apical region of the root. One hundred and twenty PEEK posts were fabricated from a PEEK blank utilizing a Computer aided design-Computer aided manufacture (CAD-CAM) system. The PEEK posts were allocated randomly into four groups based on post surface conditioning (n = 30). Group A: SA, Group B: RB, Group C: SB, and Group D: No conditioning (NC). Each group was further divided into two subgroups based on the luting cement used for bonding (n = 15). Group A1, B1, C1, and D1 specimens were cemented using composite-based resin cement. However, Group A2, B2, C2, and D2 posts were luted with MMA-based resin cement. PBS assessment using a universal testing machine was performed. Failure modes were analyzed under a stereomicroscope. The data relating to the effects of surface treatment and luting types of cement were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's post hoc test (p = 0.05). Results: Coronal section of Group B2: RB+Super-Bond C&B [9.61 ± 0.75 megapascals (MPa)] displayed the highest bond scores of PEEK after root dentin. Whereas it was also discovered that Group D1: NC+Panavia®V5 (2.05 ± 0.72 MPa) presented the lowest PBS scores. Intergroup comparison analysis revealed that Group A2: SA+Super-Bond C&B and Group B2: RB+Super-Bond C&B displayed no significant difference in their bond scores. Conclusions: RB and SA possess the potential to be used as a PEEK post conditioner. MMA-based cement displayed better performance than composite-based cement.

Comparative evaluation of effect of chlorhexidine application on dentin bond strength with two different adhesives after ER, CR: YSGG phototherapy: an in vitro study

This study aimed to assess the efficacy of phototherapy with an Er, Cr:YSGG laser on the bond strength of dentin using two different adhesive systems after chlorhexidine (CHX) application. Twenty-four non-carious human molar teeth were separated into three main groups: negative control Group A (Group A), CHX and phototherapy with an Er, Cr:YSGG laser (Group PC), and CHX with conventional diamond bur (no phototherapy) (Group C). These groups were divided into two subgroups based on adhesives: Clearfil Universal Quick Bond and Clearfil SE Bond. To evaluate the microtensile bond strength, the occlusal enamel surfaces of the teeth were removed with a low-speed, water-cooled diamond bur to expose hard dentin tissue. The teeth within Group PC were treated with Er, Cr:YSGG phototherapy. The surfaces were then disinfected with 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate. Subgroups were applied according to the manufacturer's instructions using the adhesive systems mentioned above. Following adhesive application, the teeth were restored with composite resin. A microtensile bond strength test was performed on the test sticks obtained from the teeth using a universal test device. Data were analyzed using variance analysis (ANOVA) at a significance level of p < 0.05. Among all groups, the highest bond strength was achieved with Clearfil SE Bond with CHX + phototherapy (45.6 ± 4.2), while the lowest was achieved with Clearfil Universal Quick Bond without phototherapy (control group) (27.0 ± 6.7) (p < 0.05). Phototherapy with Er, Cr: YSGG following chlorhexidine application enhanced the bond strength of both the bond systems (p < 0.05).

Micro Tensile bond strength and microleakage assessment of total-etch and self-etch adhesive bonded to carious affected dentin disinfected with Chlorhexidine, Curcumin, and Malachite green

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

Assessment of micro tensile bond strength (microTBS) and micro-leakage scores of total-etch adhesive (TAE) and self-etch adhesive (SAE) bonded to carious affected dentin (CAD) sterilized using different cavity disinfectant (curcumin photosensitizer (CP) and malachite green (MG) and Chlorhexidine (CHX) in comparison to no disinfection (ND) control group.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

One hundred and twenty human molars having International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) scores of 4 and 5 were included. Visual inspection, dental explorer hardness testing, and caries detector solution using 5% basic Fuchsin dye solution was applied to dentin to identify the CAD surface. All the specimens were divided into four groups (n = 30) according to the cavity disinfectants used. Group A: 2% CHX, Group B: CP, Group C: MG, and Group D: ND. Each group was further divided into two subgroups (n = 15) based on the adhesion protocol. Groups A1, B1, C1, and D1 were held using TEA, and groups A2, B2, C2, and D2 were adhered using SEA system. The composite material was then built in 2 mm increments and then cured with light. MicroTBS and failure mode assessment using a universal testing machine (UTM) and stereomicroscope at a 40X magnification was performed on 10 samples from each subgroup. The microleakage assessment was performed using a dye penetration test on five samples from each group. ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc tests were used to compare means and standard deviation (SD) of bond strength and microleakage (p < 0.05). RESULTS The maximum microTBS was displayed by A1= CHX and TEA (13.28± 1.01 MPa). The lowest bond scores were demonstrated by C2= MG and SEA (5.98±0.44 MPa). The highest micro-leakage was exhibited by C1= MG and TEA (58.32 ± 2.11 nm). Whereas, the lowest micro-leakage values were displayed by A2= CHX and SEA (24.34± 1.11 nm).

CONCLUSION

Chlorohexidiene displayed better bond strength and the lowest microleakage scores with Total-etch adhesive and Self-etch adhesives when used as a cavity disinfectant. Total-etch adhesives performed better in terms of microTBS scores whereas self-etch adhesives displayed superior seal ability within the same disinfectant group.

The effect of ascorbic acid and cranberry on the bond strength, surface roughness, and surface hardness of bleached enamel with hydrogen peroxide and zinc phthalocyanine activated by photodynamic therapy

To evaluate the effect of different bleaching methods 40% (hydrogen peroxide) HP and Zinc Phthalocyanine (ZP) activated by photodynamic therapy (PDT) with the utilization of diverse procedures of reversal (10% ascorbic acid and 6% cranberry solution) on bond values, surface microhardness and surface roughness of bleached enamel surface.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

An aggregate of 60 extracted human mandibular molars was gathered and the buccal surface of each specimen was exposed to 2 mm of enamel surface for bleaching with chemical and photoactivated agents with the use of reversal solutions. Specimens were divided into six groups (n = 10) at random- Group 1: samples bleached with 40% HP with 10% ascorbic acid (reversal agent), group 2: ZP activated by PDT with 10% ascorbic acid (reversal agent), group 3: 40% HP with 6% cranberry solution as a reversal agent, group 4: ZP activated by PDT with 6% cranberry solution, group 5: 40% HP and group 6: ZP activated by PDT with no reversal agents. Resin cement restoration was performed via etch and rinse technique and SBS was estimated by using the universal testing machine, SMH by using Vickers hardness tester, and Ra by stylus profilometer. Statistical analysis was executed using the ANOVA test and the Tukey multiple tests (p<0.05).

RESULTS

Enamel surface bleached with 40% HP reversed with 10% ascorbic acid displayed the highest SBS while 40% HP with no reversal agent use showed the least SBS. For SMH, ZP activated by PDT when applied on the enamel surface and reversed with 10% ascorbic acid showed the highest SMH while when bleached with 40% HP and reversed with 6% cranberry solution showed the least SMH value. For Ra, Group 3: samples bleached with 40% HP with 6% cranberry solution as reversal agent showed the highest Ra value while bleaching of enamel surface with ZP activated by PDT with 6% cranberry displayed the least Ra value.

CONCLUSION

Bleached enamel surface with Zinc Phthalocyanine activated by PDT with the application of 10% ascorbic acid as reversal solution has demonstrated the highest SBS and SMH with acceptable surface roughness for bonding adhesive resin to the enamel surface.

Use of final irrigants MTAD, Salvedora Perscia, Malachite green, and Ti-sapphire laser on push-out bond strength of Zirconia post

Evaluation of the push-out bond strength (PBS) of zirconia post-bonded to radicular dentin after using different final irrigants (MTAD, Malachite green (MG), Ti-sapphire laser and Salvadora persica (S.persica).

MATERIAL AND METHOD

Forty human permanent single-rooted were decoronated above the cement-enamel junction. An experienced endodontist performed all the root canal instrumentation using ProTaper universal rotary files. Canals were irrigated using 5.25% NaOCl solution followed by EDTA as a final sterilant. Obturation with gutta-percha using AH Plus sealer was performed. Post-space preparation was completed using Gates Glidden and specimens were randomly assigned to four groups based on the final disinfectant received (n=10). Group 1: 5.25% NaOCl + MTAD, group 2: 5.25% NaOCl + MG, group 3: 5.25% NaOCl +Ti-sapphire laser, and group 4: 5.25% NaOCl + S. persica. The chemically polymerized resin was used to lute zirconia posts. PBS and failure mode analysis were performed using a universal testing machine and stereomicroscope at 40X magnification. Data were compared between the two groups with 95% CI using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with the Tukey post hoc test. p=0.05.

RESULTS

Group4(5.25% NaOCl+ S.persica) specimens demonstrated the maximum (8.94±0.14 MPa) bond strength. Conversely, the apical third of Group 2 (5.25% NaOCl+ MG) (2.87±0.15 MPa) samples revealed the minimum bond strength scores. Intergroup comparison exposed that Group 1 (1.3% NaOCl+ MTAD), Group 3 (5.25% NaOCl+Ti-sapphire laser), and Group 4 (5.25% NaOCl+ S. persica) at all three-thirds unveiled no significant difference in PBS (p<0.05).

CONCLUSION

Ti-sapphire laser and Salvedora Persica possess the potential to be used as a final root canal irrigant to improve the push-out bond strength of zirconia post-to-root dentin.

The adhesive strength of fiber post-to-canal dentin with Aniline green, Fotoenticine activated by PDT, green tea, and ozone as a final irrigant

The effect of novel final disinfection protocols Malachite green (MG), Fotoenticine® (FTC), Green tea extract (GTE), and Ozonated water (OW) on the bond strength of prefabricated glass fiber posts (PGFP) adhered to canal dentin.

MATERIAL AND METHOD

The canals of fifty premolars with closed apices were cleansed and obturated. The specimens were randomly assigned to one of five groups based on the final irrigant used, with the control group receiving NaOCl+EDTA and the experimental groups receiving MG, FTC, OW, and GTE. The GFP was cemented with a self-etching, dual-cure paste; the bond strength was estimated with a universal testing machine; and failure analysis was conducted with a stereomicroscope.

RESULTS

The highest PBS was observed in the coronal third of Group 4 (using ozonated water as the final irrigant), whereas the lowest bond integrity was observed in the apical section of Group 2 (1.02-0.54 MPa) using Malachite green as the final irrigant. Group 1, Group 4, and Group 5 exhibited no significant difference in the bond integrity of GFP to dentin when compared to Group 2 (p>0.05). In addition, comparable bond score values were obtained for Groups 2 and 3 (p>0.05).

CONCLUSION

The results of this study suggest that OW and GTE may be effective final disinfectants for root canals, as they increase the bond strength of resin-luting cement.

Hybrid ceramic repair strength, surface roughness, and bond failure, using methylene blue-activated low-level laser therapy, Carbon dioxide, and Ti: Al2O3 laser

To evaluate the impact of various pretreatment regimes (LLLT, Ti-sapphire laser, CO2, and HFA-S) on hybrid ceramics, specifically focusing on their ability to enhance repair strength and minimize surface roughness (Ra).

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Discs were made from hybrid ceramics and after disinfection were randomly divided into four groups based on different surface conditioning techniques. Each group consisted of 15 discs, resulting in a total sample size of 60. dics in group 1 was surface treated with Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) using methylene blue (MB), Discs in group 2 with Ti-sapphire laser, Discs in group 3 with CO2 laser, and discs in group 4 with HFA-S. Five samples from each group were assessed for Ra. The remaining 10 samples from each group underwent repair using a porcelain repair kit in adherence to the planned instructions. The bond strength of each sample in all groups was measured using a universal testing machine. Following the bond strength testing, the specimens from all study groups were analyzed to determine the mode of failure. To evaluate the data, a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used, followed by post hoc multiple comparisons.

RESULTS

The highest repair bond strength was observed in group 4 hybrid ceramics pretreated with HFA-S (19.05±0.79 MPa). The lowest repair bond scores were observed in group 1 hybrid ceramics preconditioned with LLLT in the presence of Photosensitizer (13.41±0.36 MPa). The highest Ra scores were exhibited in group 2 surface treated with Ti-sapphire laser (0.0515±0.16 µm) and the lowest Ra scores were observed in Group 4 HFA-S (0.0311±0.79 µm). Predominant bond failure among different investigated groups was cohesive.

CONCLUSION

The current gold standard for hybrid ceramic conditioning is the use of hydrofluoric acid (HFA) combined with a silane coupling agent. Low-level laser therapy with methylene blue photosensitizer is not recommended for the treatment of hybrid ceramics.

Decontamination of lithium disilicate ceramics using various photosensitizers, herbal and chemical disinfectants, and the effect of surface conditioners on bond strength values

To assess and compare the antimicrobial efficacy of disinfectants on lithium disilicate ceramic (LDC) used in dental applications and shear bond strength (SBS) of LDC after using different conditioners hydrofluoric acid (HF), self-etching ceramic primers (SECP) and Neodymium-doped yttrium orthovanadate (Nd: YVO4).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

One hundred and twenty LDC discs were fabricated by auto-polymerizing acrylic resin using the lost wax technique. S. aureus, S. mutans, and C. albican were inoculated on thirty discs (n=30 each). Each group was further divided into three subgroups based on different disinfecting agents used (n=30) Group 1: Garlic extract, Group 2: Rose Bengal (RB) activated by PDT, and Group 3: Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). An assessment of the survival rate of microorganisms was performed. The remaining thirty samples were surface treated using three different LDC surface conditioners (n=10) Group 1: HF + Silane (S), group 2: SECP, and Group 3: Nd: YVO4 laser+S. SBS and failure mode analysis were performed using a universal testing machine and stereomicroscope at 40x magnification, The statistical analysis was conducted using one-way ANOVA and Post Hoc Tukey test.

RESULTS

Garlic extract, RB, and 2% NaOCl sample displayed comparable outcomes of antimicrobial potency against C. albicans, S aureus, and S. mutans (p>0.05). Furthermore, SBS analysis showed HF+S, SECP, and Nd: YVO4+S exhibited comparable outcomes of bond strength (p>0.05).

CONCLUSION

Garlic extract and Rose bengal activated by PDT can be contemplated as alternatives to the chemical agent NaOCl used for LDC disinfection. Similarly, SECP and Nd: YVO4 possess the potential to be used for the surface conditioning of LDC to improve the bond integrity with resin cement.

Surface conditioning of PEEK post using Nd: YVO4 laser, Photodynamic therapy, and sulfuric acid on the pushout bond strength to canal dentin

To assess the push-out bond strength (PBS) of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) post-to-root dentin using post-surface conditioners i.e., Neodymium-doped yttrium orthovanadate (Nd: YVO4) and Riboflavin (RF) and Rose Bengal (RB) mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT) compared to sulfuric acid (SA).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Decoronation of forty human single-rooted premolar teeth was performed. Followed by chamber opening, working length (WL) was established at 15 mm. Root canal preparation was completed using ProTaper Ni-Ti rotary system till F3 finishing file along with root canal disinfection. The canals were dried with paper cones followed by obturation using gutta-percha (GP) and AH sealer. Post space was prepared by drilling out 11 mm of GP using a Gates Glidden drill #3. PEEK posts were fabricated using the CAD-CAM system and then randomly allocated into 4 groups based on the post-surface conditioning (n=10). Group 1: SA, group 2: PDT RF, group 3: PDT RB, and group 4: Nd: YVO4 laser. The PEEK post was then cemented in their respective canal. PBS and failure mode assessment were performed using a universal testing machine and stereomicroscope at 40x magnification. The SBS data set was subjected to a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's Post Hoc test at a significance level of 0.05.

RESULTS

The samples in group 4 (Nd: YVO4 laser) coronal third (7.99±0.24 MPa) demonstrated the highest PBS. The apical third of samples in group 1 PEEK post surface conditioned with SA (5.15± 0.52 MPa) exhibited the minimum values of PBS. Intergroup comparison analysis showed that samples in group 1 (SA), group 2 (RF activated by PDT), group 3 (RB activated by PDT), and group 4 (Nd: YVO4 laser) demonstrated comparable outcomes of bond scores (p>0.05) CONCLUSION: Neodymium-doped yttrium orthovanadate (Nd: YVO4) and riboflavin and Rose bengal activated by photodynamic therapy (PDT) have been investigated as potential alternatives for the surface conditioning of PEEK (polyetheretherketone) posts.

Use of final irrigant Potassium Titanyl Phosphate laser; Sapindus Mukorossi and Fotoenticine on the bond values of zirconia post-to-canal dentin

Assessment of the efficacy of final root canal irrigants Sapindus mukorossi (SM), Potassium titanyl phosphate laser (KTPL), and Fotoenticine (FTC) on the push-out bond strength (PBS) of zirconia post.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The root canal procedure was initiated using the 10 K file and the working length was determined on single-rooted human premolar teeth after decoration. The canals were then enlarged using ProTaper universal system and filled using single cone gutta-percha (GP) and AH Plus resin sealer. Post space was prepared by removing 10mm of GP from the canal. All the teeth were then allocated into four groups based on the final irrigating regime used (n=10) Group 1: 5.25% NaOCl+17% EDTA, Group 2: 5.25% NaOCl + KTPL, Group 3: 5.25% NaOCl + FTC and Group 4: 5.25% NaOCl+ SM. Zirconia posts were cemented in the canal space. The specimens were sectioned and implanted in auto-polymerizing acrylic resin. A universal testing machine and stereomicroscope at 40x magnification were used for PBS and failure mode analysis. ANOVA and Tukey post hoc test were used to make group comparisons(p=0.05).

RESULTS

Group 4 (5.25% NaOCl+ SM) coronal section displayed the highest PBS (9.29±0.24 MPa). However, group 3 (5.25% NaOCl+ FTC) apical third (4.08±0.14 MPa) showed the lowest bond values. Group 2 (5.25% NaOCl+ KTP laser) and Group 3 at all three-thirds unveiled no significant difference in PBS(p>0.05). However, Group 1 (5.25% NaOCl+17%EDTA) and Group 4 displayed comparable outcomes of bond strength(p>0.05) CONCLUSION: Sapindus mukorossi has the ability to be used as a final root canal irrigant alternative to EDTA. However, future studies are still required to conclude the outcomes of existing research.

Effect of Malachite green, Ocimum Sanctum, and Er, Cr: YSGG laser on antimicrobial activity against S.mutans and CAD disinfection bonded to resin restoration

Evaluation of survival of S.mutans and shear bond strength (SBS) of adhesive restorative material bonded to carious affected dentin (CAD) after using cavity disinfectant i.e., Er, Cr: YSGG (ECYL), (Nd: YAG) (NYL), Malachite green (MG), Ocimum sanctum (OS) in comparison to the conventional control chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Seventy-five caries-affected mandibular third molars having ICDAS scores 4 and 5 were included. Carious infected dentin was eliminated and CAD surface was obtained. On twenty-five samples, an uncontaminated suspension of S. mutans strain ATCC 35668 in Brain-Heart Infusion broth (BHI) was obtained after 12 hours of incubation at 37°C. Based on the disinfection regime used to sterilize the CAD surface, all the specimens were allocated into five different groups. (n=15) Group 1: CAD disinfected with CHX, Group 2: CAD disinfected with ECYL, Group 3: CAD disinfected with NYL, Group 4: CAD disinfected with MG, and Group 5: CAD disinfected with OS. An assessment of the survival rate of S. mutans was performed. Fifty specimens were smeared with single-step adhesive bond followed by restoring the CAD surface using packable composite. SBS and failure mode were determined using a universal testing machine and stereomicroscope at 40x magnification. ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey-Kramer test was used for data analysis p=0.05 RESULTS: Group 1: CHX-treated specimens displayed the lowest bacterial viability (0.11±0.03 CFU/mL). However, group 4: MG exhibited the highest bacterial survival (0.15 ±0.09 CFU/mL). The highest and lowest SBS of resin adhesive bonded to disinfected CAD surface were exhibited by (group 5: OS) (21.48±1.39 MPa) and (group 3: NYL) (16.41±0.90 MPa) respectively (p>0.05).

CONCLUSION

Ocimum sanctum seems to be promising in terms of its antibacterial efficacy against S.mutans and positive impact on SBS of resin adhesive to CAD surface.

Different cavity disinfectant efficacy against S.Mutans and shear bond strength of caries affected dentin bonded to resin restoration

The existing study aimed to assess the survival rate of S.mutans and shear bond strength (SBS) of resin adhesive restoration bonded to carious affected dentin (CAD) after using different cavity disinfectants (Chitosan, Fotoenticine®, and CO₂ laser) in comparison to Chlorhexidine (CHX).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The study included human mandibular molars assessed on International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) score 4 and 5. The cusp part of the clinical crown was cut off until the reduction reaches the central fossa while being continuously supplied with water coolant till the tooth cementoenamel junction (CEJ). The root sections were embedded in polymethyl methacrylate acrylic resin followed by culturing S.mutans biofilm on the CAD surface. Specimens were arbitrarily allocated into four groups(n = 10) based on the type of disinfection. Group 1 (2% CHX), Group 2 (Chitosan), Group 3 (Fotoenticine), and Group 4 (CO₂ laser). S.mutans survival rate was assessed and CAD was restored with a composite restorative material. Thermoocycling of the samples was performed and a universal testing machine (UTM) and Stereomicroscope were used to identify bond integrity and type of fracture. ANOVA and Tukey multiple comparison tests were used to assess SBS. Data on the survival rate of S. mutans were compared between groups using the nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis test RESULTS: Outcomes revealed that Group 1 (CHX) displayed the highest survival rate (0.65±0.10). However, it is worth noting that Fotoenticine exhibited better antimicrobial efficacy against S. mutans.

Influence of Contemporary Photoactivated Disinfection on the Mechanical Properties and Antimicrobial Activity of PMMA Denture Base: A Systematic Review and Meta Analysis

PURPOSE

The present study aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the effectiveness of the contemporary photoactivated disinfection methods on the mechanical features and/or antimicrobial activity of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) dentures bases.

METHODS

THE FOCUSED RESEARCH QUESTION WAS: : "What is the effect of contemporary photoactivated disinfection methods as compared to conventional disinfection protocols on the mechanical features and/or antimicrobial activity of PMMA dentures bases?". An electronic literature search was carried out by the author and a senior librarian specialized in health sciences on Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus. In vitro investigations evaluating the antimicrobial and/or mechanical effects of photoactivated disinfectants as compared to conventional chemical disinfectants on the microbes formed on PMMA denture bases were included. Meta-analysis was performed for calculating the standard mean difference (SMD) with a 95% confidence interval.

RESULTS

Four out of eight studies concluded that photoactivated disinfectants, including riboflavin-mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT), hematoporphyrin-mediated PDT, poly-L-glycolic acid loaded with methylene blue, Erbium, chromium-doped yttrium, scandium, gallium, and garnet (Er,Cr:YSGG) laser, erbium-doped yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) laser, and chitosan-mediated PDT, demonstrated a significant reduction in colony-forming unit per milliliter (CFU/mL) of exposed viable colonies of Escherichia coli (E. coli), Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans), Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), and Candida albicans (C. albicans) comparable to the conventionally used chemical disinfectants of PMMA denture bases. Contrarily, two studies concluded that the PMMA denture base colonized with C. albicans and disinfected with conventional chemical disinfectants showed the greatest anti-fungal efficaciousness. All the included studies concluded that the application of photoactivated disinfectants does not negatively impact the mechanical features of the PMMA denture bases colonized with microbes including E. coli, S. mutans, S. aureus, and C. albicans. The meta-analysis revealed statistically significant reduction in C. albicans counts (CFU/mL [Log10]) (p < 0.00001) and improvement in the flexural strength (p = 0.0002) of PMMA-based denture base after the application of conventional disinfectants, while a statistically significant improvement in the fracture strength of PMMA-based denture base was observed after the application of photoactivated disinfectants (p = 0.03).

CONCLUSION

According to the systematic review (qualitative synthesis), photoactivated disinfectants demonstrated comparable mechanical features and antimicrobial activity of PMMA dentures bases to conventional chemical disinfectants suggesting their potential to be utilized as an alternative to conventional chemical disinfectants. However, the meta-analysis (quantitative synthesis) revealed that the application of conventional disinfectants demonstrated better outcomes related to antimicrobial activity and flexural strength of PMMA-based denture based.

Influence of Lithium disilicate pretreatment using photodynamic therapy, non-thermal plasma, and laser treatment on surface roughness and bond strength

AIMS

To assess the shear bond strength (SBS) and surface roughness (Ra) of lithium disilicate ceramic (LDC) after using different pretreatment methods i.e., Non-Thermal Plasma (NTP), self-etching ceramic primer (SECP), curcumin photosensitizer (CP), Er and Cr: YSGG lasers (ECL) in comparison to hydrofluoric acid + Silane (HF + S) MATERIALS AND METHODS: : A total of fifty LDC discs were prepared. All the discs were arbitrarily divided into five groups based on the surface conditioning used (n=10). Group 1: PDT+S, group 2: HF+ S, group 3: NTP + S, group 4: SECP, and group 5: ECL+ S. A confocal optical microscope was used to calculate Ra for each sample. A self-adhesive resin cement was applied followed by LED light curing. A universal testing machine was used to assess SBS and a stereomicroscope was used to determine the failure mode. Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and a Tukey post hoc test was used to analyze data (p=0.05) RESULTS: : The highest bond integrity of resin luting bonded to conditioned LDS ceramics were presented by group 2 (HF+ S) (21.48±1.39 MPa) and lowest by group 1 (CP+S) (13.01±1.19 MPa) respectively. Intergroup comparison analysis revealed that group 1(13.01±1.19 MPa) and group 3 (14.28±0.62 MPa) displayed comparable outcomes of bond integrity(p>0.05). Similarly, it was observed that group 2 (21.48±1.39 MPa) and group 5 (21.31±1.85MPa) exhibited comparable values of bond strength(p>0.05). Specimens conditioned with HF+ S showed the highest Ra (1445.86±0.019µm). However, discs treated with SECP exhibited the lowest Ra (0139.76±0.081µm) CONCLUSION: Er, Cr: YSGG laser retains the ability to be used as an LDC surface conditioner as an alternative to HF+ S.Both the methods of pretreatment results in high surface roughness of LDC.

Caries-affected dentin disinfection using Triphala, Indocyanine green, and Potassium Titanyl Phosphate laser and their effect on adhesive bond strength

To assess the impact of new cavity sterilization types using ozone water (OW), Potassium Titanyl Phosphate laser (KTPL), Triphala, and indocyanine green photosensitizer (ICGP) on adhesive bond strength.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Fifty human permanent molars were included based on the criteria of International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) scores 4 and 5 visual examinations, surface hardness valuation, staining by a caries detector solution, and radiographs. Caries-affected dentin (CAD) samples were randomly distributed into groups based on methods of disinfection (n = 10). Group 1: chlorhexidine, group 2: ow, group 3: KTPL, group 4: Triphala, and group 5: ICGP. Following disinfection, specimens were applied with Adper prime and bond NT and then restored with resin composite. All specimens were positioned in a jig of the universal testing machine for shear bond strength (SBS). The debonded samples were analyzed under a stereomicroscope at 40x magnification to determine the type of failure. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey HSD tests were used keeping the level of significance p < 0.05.

RESULTS

The highest bond of adhesive resin was displayed by group 2 specimens cleaned using OW (16.71 ± 0.19 MPa). Whereas, the lowest bond integrity was observed by group 5 specimens disinfected using ICGP (11.21 ± 0.16 MPa). It was observed samples disinfected with OW (16.71 ± 0.19 MPa) in group 2 and samples in group 4 (16.09 ± 0.26 MPa) treated with Triphala displayed comparable outcomes of bond strength (p > 0.05). It was observed that group 2 (70%) and 4 (80%) treated specimens accounted mostly for cohesive failure. However, groups 1 (80%), 3 (60%), and 5 (70%) displayed an adhesive failure pattern.

CONCLUSION

OW and Triphala displayed better bond integrity of adhesive resin to CAD and therefore have the potential to be used as a cavity disinfectant in clinical settings. However, ICGP and KTPL displayed weak bonds of adhesive to CAD. More work is needed to extrapolate the findings of the present study.

Influence of contemporary ceramo-metallic crown decontamination on the surface roughness, color stability, and disinfection. An in vitro analysis

To assess the antimicrobial effects, surface roughness (Ra), and color change (ΔE) of Morinda Citrofolia, Sapindus Mukorossi, Indocyanine green photosensitizer, and 2% NaOCl on metal ceramic crown colonized with C. Albicans, S aureus, S. mutans, and E. coli.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

An aggregate of 40 (n = 10 each) Ni/Cr metal-ceramic crowns were fabricated and inoculated with the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) of varied microbial colonies colonized by C. Albicans, S aureus, S. mutans, and E. coli. After inoculation, specimens were exposed to four different types of disinfection methods i.e. group 1: MC, group 2: SM, group 3:ICGP, and group 4 2% NaOCl respectively to evaluate antimicrobial efficacy, Ra, and color change. Later, the microbial assay was performed and expressed as CFU/ml (log 10). Ra was assessed using a surface analyzer and color change ΔE was evaluated using a spectrophotometer Statistical analysis was performed by using two-way ANOVA and Post HocTukey's test maintaining a significance level of p less than 0.05.

RESULTS

The highest antimicrobial efficacy for metallic-ceramic crown decontamination against all inspected microbial colonies was unveiled by group 1: MC, whereas the lowest disinfection efficacy was revealed by group 4 sterilized with 2% NaOCl (control). Metallic ceramic crown decontamination with MC and SM substantiated equivalent antimicrobial efficacy in plummeting CFU/mL (log10) of C.Albicans, S aureus, S.mutans, and E. coli (p>0.05). However, ICGP as a crown disinfectant validated antimicrobial efficacy significantly less compared to MC and SM (p<0.05). Ra was assessed post-disinfection with no changes observed (p>0.05) among all groups. Similarly, ΔE was significantly higher in crowns disinfected with ICGP (p<0.05) CONCLUSION: Metallic ceramic crown decontamination using herbal disinfectants Morinda Citrofolia and Sapindus Mukorossi exhibited favorable antimicrobial efficacies against microbial colonies of C. albicans, S aureus, S.mutans, and E. coli with no changes in surface roughness and color.

Disinfection of caries-affected dentin using potassium titanyl phosphate laser, Rose bengal and Ozonated water on shear bond strength of deciduous teeth

To assess the efficacy of disinfection of caries-effected dentin (CAD) using KTP laser and different decontamination methods using ozonated water (OW), Rose Bengal photosensitizer (RBP), chlorhexidine (CHX), and Er, YAG laser on the shear bond strength (SBS) of adhesive resin bonded to deciduous teeth.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A total of 50 extracted and radiographically verified carious primary molars were collected and scrutinized according to ICDAS criteria. Specimens were allocated randomly into five groups (n = 10) as per the type of CAD disinfectants. KTP laser, OW, RBP, CHX (control), and Er, YAG laser. After cavity sanitization, a resin adhesive (prime and bond NT) was smeared on the dentinal exterior followed by incremental composite filling. SBS evaluation was performed by employing specimens in the universal testing machine. The debonded surface was assessed under 40x magnification in a stereomicroscope to ascertain fracture mode. Statistical analysis was done by using the ANOVA and the Post Hoc Tukey multiple comparison tests (p < 0.05).

RESULTS

The highest SBS was exhibited by group 2 i.e., when OW was employed for CAD disinfection (10.25 ± 0.24 MPa). Whereas, the lowest SBS bond value was unveiled by samples in group 3 when RBP was applied for dentin surface sanitization (7.85 ± 0.59 MPa).CAD disinfection with KTP laser (8.25 ± 0.41 MPa), CHX (8.19 ± 0.73 MPa), and RBP displayed comparable bond values (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Ozonated water and Er, YAG laser could be employed as cavity disinfectants in primary teeth as they demonstrated better shear bond strength without jeopardizing the adhesive binding capacity of restorative resins bonded to caries-affected dentin.

Glass fiber post resistance to dislodgement from radicular dentin after using contemporary and conventional methods of disinfection

The present study aimed to assess the bond integrity of curcumin photosensitizer (CPS) Photodynamic therapy (PDT) on fiber post disinfection bonded to radicular dentin in comparison to the conventional fiber post sterilant used.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Fifty human permanent single-rooted premolars were utilized with the crown part sectioned using up to the cementoenamel junction. Root canal preparation was performed followed by canal obturation with gutta-percha (GP) and resin-based sealer. The post space was prepared using peso reamers leaving 4 mm at the apical part of the post space. Fifty glass fiber posts (GFP) were divided into five groups based on the surface disinfectant (n = 10). group 1: Autoclave sterilization (AS) group 2: chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX dig), group 3: CPS solution, group 4: 35% phosphoric acid (PA) gel, and group 5: No disinfection. Cementation was performed using dual-cure self-etch resin cement. Each tooth was sectioned and placed on the universal testing machine. Failure mode was analyzed using a stereomicroscope at 40x magnification. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey multiple comparison tests. (p = 0.05).

RESULTS

Intragroup comparison analysis demonstrated that group 2 in which 2% CHX dig was used as a post-surface disinfectant revealed the highest bond integrity at all three levels. Group 5 where no disinfectant was used to decontaminate the post surface exhibited the lowest bond values. In all the investigated groups, PBS values showed a downward trend from coronal to the apical third of the post space. Group 1 in which AS was used to sterilize the fiber post and group 3 in which CPS was smeared to decontaminate the GFPs surface-displayed comparable outcomes of PBS to group 5 specimens at all three levels. (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

CHX dig and PA post-surface disinfection displayed a positive impact on bond strength with the radicular dentin. However, CPS and AS do not reveal any effect on the PBS when used for post-decontamination.

Efficacy of Er, Cr: YSGG laser phosphoric acid gel and Riboflavin activated by Photodynamic therapy on enamel reconditioning rebonded to metallic brackets: An Invitro study

AIM

To evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) and failure percentage of rebonded metallic brackets after employing various enamel-reconditioning methods (37% phosphoric acid, sandblasting, Er, Cr: YSGG laser, and Riboflavin (RF).

MATERIAL AND METHODS

After sample size calculation, a sum of 40 non-carious, non-traumatically extracted and sound human premolar teeth were collected and the enamel surface was prepped by etching, washing, and drying. The enamel surface was primed with a bonding agent and light cured, later brackets were bonded via composite. After bonding, bracket debonding was begun using a Weingart plier and the enamel surface was reconditioned before rebonding. Samples were divided into four (n=10) reconditioning groups at random and subjected to SB with 90-μm alumina particles group 1, Er, Cr: YSGG laser group 2, 37% PA (control) group 3, and RF group 4 respectively. After reconditioning, brackets were rebonded to the enamel surface via an adhesive system and composite. Later, samples were exposed to the universal testing machine for SBS analysis, and bond failure analysis was performed by using an adhesive remnant index (ARI). Statistical analysis was executed by one-way ANOVA and Post Hoc Tukey multiple comparison tests at a statistically significant level of p ˂ 0.05.

RESULTS

The SBS analysis showed that the highest SBS of rebounded brackets was exhibited by 37% phosphoric acid (control) and the lowest SBS by sandblasting enamel surface with 90-μm alumina particles for enamel prior rebonding. However, Er, Cr: YSGG laser and RF activated by PDT validated comparable SBS results to control (p>0.05). Contrarily, sandblasting with 90-μm alumina particles showed a statistically significant difference from other analyzed reconditioning groups (p<0.05). Deliberating failure rate analysis by ARI index, the most eminent failures predicted among groups were scored between 0 and 1 except for sandblasting which majorly resulted in a score of 2 showing cohesive type failure.

CONCLUSION

Chromium-doped erbium, yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet (Er, Cr: YSGG) laser, and Riboflavin activated by photodynamic therapy have the potential to be used as an alternative to 37% phosphoric acid for enamel surface reconditioning before the rebonding metallic bracket.

Adjunctive use of Er, Cr: YSGG laser, Potassium titanyl Phosphate laser, and photosensitizer on extrusion bond strength of radicular dentin to bioceramic sealers

AIM

To assess the impact of adjunctive final root canal disinfection regime curcumin photosensitizer (CP) activated by Photodynamic therapy (PDT), Er, Cr: YSGG laser (ECL), and Potassium titanyl Phosphate (KTP) laser on the bond integrity of two endodontic Bioceramic (BC) sealers.

MATERIALS AND METHOD

Decoration of eighty human single-rooted teeth was performed up to a cementoenamel junction. After instrumentation, all samples were irrigated with 2.25% NaOCl solution followed by 17% EDTA. The specimens were divided arbitrarily into 8 groups (n = 10) based on the adjunctive final irrigation method used. Group 1 and 5 (Control): No adjunctive regime, cleaned using 2.25% NaOCl + 17% EDTA, group 2 and group 6: CP activated by PDT, Group 3 and Group 7 using ECL, Group 4 and Group 8: KTP laser. Following disinfection samples in groups 1, 2, 3, and 4 were obturated using Sankin apatite root canal sealer (SARS). Specimens in groups 5, 6, 7, and 8 were obturated using Pro-root endo sealer (PRES). Sectioning of samples was performed. The sectioned specimens were subjected to a compressive loading exerted via a steel plunger moving at a 0.5 mm/min crosshead speed till debonding. Means and standard deviations (SD) of EBS of BC sealer with the root canal dentin were assessed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Post Hoc Tukey multiple comparison tests. The level of significance was measured at p = 0.05.

RESULTS

The coronal section of samples in group 5 (Na-E-PRES) exhibited the highest bond value. The lowest PBS was displayed by the middle third of specimens in group 6. Group 1 (Na-E-SARS), group 3 (Na-E-ECL-SARS), group 5 (Na-E-PRES), and group 7 (Na-E-ECL-PRES) exhibited comparable bond values (p>0.05). Whereas, group 2 (Na-E-PDT-SARS) and group 4 (Na-E-PTPL-SARS), group 6 (Na-E-PDT-PRES), and group 8 (Na-E-PTPL-PRES) were found to be comparable (p>0.05).

CONCLUSION

Adjunctive use of Er, Cr: YSGG laser displayed better extrusion bond strength with BC root canal sealer compared to CP activated by PDT and KTP laser. Bond strength is influenced by the type of irrigation.

Assessment of Caries-Affected Dentin Adhesive Interface Treated with Contemporary Conditioning Techniques

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess shear bond strength (SBS) and failure analysis of adhesion of composite resin (CR) to caries-affected dentin (CAD) pretreated with the Er,Cr:YSGG (ECY) laser, photodynamic therapy (PDT), and etch and rinse (ER) used for cavity disinfection. Materials and methods: Methods used in this study included scanning electron microscopy (SEM), SBS analysis, failure analysis, and digital microscopy. The methods were adopted to assess bond integrity, CAD interface, smear layer, and hybridization. Thirty human third molars assessed clinically and having scores of 4 and 5 based on International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) criteria were inspected. Infected dentin was removed. Dentin that was hard and stained pink was categorized as CAD. Ten samples were used in each group for pretreatment of CAD. Ten samples of healthy dentin [sound dentin (SD)] were collected separately and taken as controls. Samples were divided into the following groups: group 1: SD+ER; group 2: CAD+ER; group 3: CAD+ECY; and group 4: CAD+PDT after the pretreatment bonding agent was applied and the restorative procedure was performed using CR. Results: CAD conditioned with PDT before bonding to CR demonstrated the lowest SBS values (11.22 ± 0.77 MPa), whereas the highest SBS values were observed in the SD surface treated with ER (18.25 ± 1.22 MPa). In CAD and SD pretreated with ER, majority of failure modes were cohesive failure and admixed failure, whereas in CAD pretreated with PDT and the ECY laser, the adhesive failure mode was pertinent. Conclusions: The use of the ECY laser and PDT on CAD for cavity disinfection does not have potential for application in clinical settings as it decreases bond integrity of CR. Moreover, the ER pretreatment method for CAD and SD remains the gold standard.

Disinfection of caries affected dentin using Rose Bengal, Titanium Sapphire Laser; Ammonium Hexa-fluorosilicate, and ozonated water on resin dentin bond strength

The present study intended to evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) of resin cement bonded to caries affected dentin (CAD) after disinfection with rose Bengal (RB), Ti-Sapphire Laser, Ammonium Hexafluorosilicate (NH₄)₂[SiF₆], and ozonated water (O₃) MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 100 extracted human mandibular molars were acquired using caries severity code, 6 of the ICDAS criteria. To achieve homogeneity and prevent size-biased distributions, the average cavity preparation of all specimens had a depth of 2 mm and a breadth of 3 mm. Specimens were divided into five groups (n = 20) at random according to type of disinfection. Group 1: control group, Group 2: RB, Group 3: O₃, Group 4: Ti-sapphire laser, and Group 5: (NH4)2[SiF₆]. All specimens were etch and rinsed, bonding agent was applied and restored with resin cement. Estimation of SBS was performed by placing samples (10/group) in universal testing machine. Stereomicroscope under 40 × magnification was employed for failure mode analysis (FMA). Statistical analysis was executed using the ANOVA and the Tukey multiple test (p<0.05).

RESULTS

The highest SBS was demonstrated in the control group when CAD bonded to resin cement without disinfection (18.22±1.14 MPa). Likewise, the lowest SBS values were unveiled by CAD disinfection with O₃ (12.44±1.36 MPa). Similarly, CAD when disinfected with RB (16.25±1.01 MPa) and Ti-sapphire laser (16.25±1.22 MPa) bonded to resin cement exhibited comparable bond results (p>0.05).

CONCLUSION

Caries affected dentin when treated with etch and rinse technique without the use of disinfectant displayed the highest SBS. However, it was seen that utilization of various disinfectants has altered the adhesion capacity or bonding efficacy of caries-affected dentin.

Effect of two hemostatic agents containing Aluminium chloride and ferric sulfate on bond integrity of resin-modified glass ionomer cement

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the influence of hemostatic agents (Expasyl and Viscostat) on the bond values of RMGIC bonded to pretreated dentin surface with cavity conditioner (CC), self etch primer (SEP), and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and eighty human third molars were embedded in a self-cure acrylic resin-filled polyvinyl cylinder. The dentinal surface was prepared and all the samples were arbitrarily distributed into three different groups liable to the hemostatic agent used (n = 60). Samples in group 1: no hemostatic agent used, Group 2: Samples exposed to Expasyl, and group 3: Viscostat. After applying the hemostatic agent, all the samples were surface treated with different surface conditioners. Subgroup A1, B1, C1 were conditioned with aPDT, Subgroup A2, B2, and C2 surface were treated with SEP, and Subgroup A3, B3, and C3 were smeared with CC. RMGIC was placed and SBS was assessed using a universal testing machine and failure mode analysis was performed using and stereomicroscope at 40x magnification. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's post hoc test compared the means and standard deviations (SD) following SBS testing (p = 0.05).

RESULTS

Highest SBS was exhibited by group A2 (22.36±1.66 MPa Control - SEP) whereas group A1 (14.14±1.32 aPDT + Control) demonstrated the lowest SBS. Subgroups B1 (17.23±0.33- Expasyl + aPDT) and C1 (18.36±0.25 MPa -Viscostat + aPDT) were found to be comparable (p > 0.05). Similarly, A3 (19.69±1.01- Control + CC) and B3 (18.23±0.33 MPa- Expasyl + CC) and C3 (18.36±0.37 Viscostat + CC) demonstrated no significant difference in bond scores (p > 0.05). Most of the failures in aPDT were adhesive. However, SEP and CC groups demonstrated admixed and cohesive failure CONCLUSION: Dentin conditioned by aPDT after hemostatic agents improves bond values of RMGIC. Self etch Primer and Cavity conditioner using polyacrylic acid without hemostatic agent improves bond integrity of RMGIC.

Influence of methylene blue, Riboflavin, and indocyanine green on the bond strength of caries affected dentin when bonded to resin-modified glass ionomer cement

The present study aimed to assess the influence of methylene blue (MBP), Riboflavin, and indocyanine green (ICG) on the bond strength of caries affected dentin (CAD) when bonded to resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Human third molars with caries lesions were isolated and collected scrutinized based on ICDAS criteria. The teeth were cleaned using a periodontal scaler and disinfected. All samples were positioned in polyvinyl up to the cementoenamel junction. The samples were randomly distributed into five groups based on the pretreatment regime. Samples in group 1, were pretreated with MBP; group 2, polyacrylic acid (PAA) group 3, ICG, group 4, Riboflavin photosensitizer, and group 5, 37% phosphoric acid (PA). All samples were bonded with RMGIC. 10 samples were subjected to the universal testing machine for shear bond strength (SBS) testing. Five samples from each group were placed in fuchsine dye for the microleakage assessment. Comparison of means and standard deviations (SD) of SBS and microleakage in investigated groups was performed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's post hoc test at a significance level (p=0.05) RESULTS: : The highest micro shear bond values were observed in group 2 (CAD conditioned with PAA) (14.26±1.67 MPa). Whereas, the lowest bond values were found in group 1 (treated with MBP) (8.82±1.08 MPa). CAD conditioned with different photosensitizers i.e., MBP, ICG, and Riboflavin before bonding to RMGIC displayed comparable bond values (8.82±1.08 MPa), (9.47±0.21 MPa), and (11.23±0.47 MPa) respectively (p>0.05). Samples conditioned with 37% PA showed significantly higher microleakage scores compared to other surface-treated groups (p<0.05).

CONCLUSION

Caries-affected dentin conditioned with polyacrylic acid demonstrated low microleakage and high bond strength.

Disinfection efficacy and fracture strength of PMMA denture-based polymer with chlorhexidine, PDT utilizing Rose Bengal and hematoporphyrin, and Er, Cr: YSGG laser

OBJECTIVE

The study aimed to assess and compare disinfection efficacy and fracture strength of PMMA based DBPs using chlorhexidine (CHX), PDT utilizing Rose Bengal (RB) and hematoporphyrin HPD, and Er,Cr:YSGG laser (ECL) induced antimicrobial action against in-vitro biofilms colonized with C.albicans, S.aureus, S. mutans, and E. coli.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) of C.albicans, S.aureus, S. mutans and E. coli were cultured. Forty-eight PMMA-based denture base plates (DBPs) were prepared by heat-cure acrylic resin and contaminated by in-vitro biofilm under-stimulated in-vitro conditions. DBPs were treated with group1; ECL group 2; RB 5µm, group 3; HPD 500 mg/L and group 4; 0.12% CHX (controls) respectively, for the disinfection of biofilms. All photosensitizers (PS) were activated by LED at a different wavelength. Each contaminated DBP was sprayed on all its surfaces with the aforementioned photosensitizers and CHX. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to test the efficacy of disinfection and fracture load testing. Tukey multiple comparison tests were performed to compare means of CFU/mL (log10) for exposed E. coli, C. albicans, S aureus, and S. mutans.

RESULTS

Specimens in group 1 disinfected with erbium laser, group 3 disinfected with HPD, and group 4 sterilized with chemical disinfection were effective in decreasing bacterial load CFU/mL (log10) against C.albicans, S. aureus, S.mutans, and E. Coli (p>0.05). Intergroup comparison demonstrated ECL, CHX and HPD demonstrated a comparable reduction against C.albicans and S.aureus (p>0.05). Similarly, S.mutans and E.coli were sensitive against all experimental groups (p>0.05). no significant difference in fractural load analysis among the different investigated groups was noted (p>0.05).

CONCLUSION

ECL and HPD photosensitizer revealed a significant reduction in CFU/ml of exposed viable colonies of C.albicans, S.aureus, S. mutans, and E. coli comparable to 0.12% CHX mediated disinfection of PMMA-based DBPs. Irrespective of the type of disinfection no influence of disinfection was noted on the fracture load of PMMA DBPs.

Influence of resin removal treatments on the surface topography and strength of de-bonded lithium disilicate ceramic

AIM

This study aims to assess the influence of resin removal treatment regimes on the surface topography and compressive strength of de-bonded ceramic surfaces.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Sixty-five lithium disilicate ceramic (LDC) discs were prepared, cleaned, and polished with carbide paper. All samples were etched using 9.6% hydrofluoric acid (HFA). Fifteen samples were taken as positive controls; the remaining 50 samples were subjected to the process of silanization. Resin build-up using dual-cure cement was performed incrementally and light cured. Based on different methods of resin cleaning from de-bonded LDC, the samples were divided into five groups, n=10 each: group 1 (no treatment), group 2 (slow-speed diamond bur), group 3 (1 min heat treatment), Group 4 (6 min heat treatment), and group 5 (sandblasting with Al₂O₃). Following resin removal, LDC samples were tested under compressive failure load in a universal testing machine. Five disc specimens from each group were sputter coated with gold for scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's post hoc test was used for descriptive statistics. Level of significance was established at p<0.05.

RESULTS

The highest compressive strength with significant difference among all experimental groups was found in group 5 (321.54 ± 13.25 MPa) (p<0.05). The lowest compressive strength values, presenting significant difference compared with all other groups, were displayed in group 1 (158.57 ± 5.22 MPa) (p<0.05). Compressive strength among group 2 (231.54 ± 15.55 MPa), group 3 (237.81 ± 10.81 MPa), and group 4 (255.53 ± 8.95 MPa) specimens was statistically comparable (p>0.05). On SEM, heat-treated specimens confirmed coarser granules, with mild porosities and roughening, whereas sandblasted specimens exhibited consistent evenness with moderate porosity and loss of glazed surface.

CONCLUSION

De-bonded LDC surface, treated with heat treatment and sandblasting procedures, exhibited removal of residual resin and significantly high compressive strength compared with non-cleansed ceramic surface.

Bond Integrity of Titanium Surface to Resin Cement After Conditioning with Different Photobiomodulataion Therapy (PBT)

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of interfacial bonding between resin cement and titanium alloy conditioned with different Photobiomodulataion Therapy (PBT) in comparison with conventional regimes. Seventy-five samples of titanium bar were segmented polished; and based on conditioning regime divided into five groups (15 each specimens). Group 1: No treatment (control), Group 2: Sand blasting with 120 µm Al2O3, Group 3: Er,Cr:YSGG (ECL), Group 4: Er:YAG laser (EYL), Group 5: Nd:YAG laser (NYL). After different conditioning regimes, resin cement was mixed and applied. All specimens were thermocycled for 500 cycles and positioned on universal testing machine for shear bond strength testing. Modes of failure was assessed by a single examiner using stereomicroscope at 40× magnification. Three pairs of specimens in each group were sputter coated and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images were taken at 1000× magnification using 20 Kv. The highest SBS values were observed in group 2 (14.25±2.29 MPa) and the lowest bond values were displayed in group 1 (6.98 ±0.59 MPa). Titanium alloy abutments conditioned with different laser prototypes ECL (11.22±1.40 MPa), EYL (9.29±1.22 MPa) and NYL (9.12 ±1.84 MPa) exhibited comparable SBS (p > 0.05). Adhesive failures were primarily dominant among all experimental groups. Photo-biomodulation in the form of ECL lasers has the potential to be used as a supplement to sandblasting procedure in conditioning of cement retained titanium alloy implant abutments.

Influence of Photodynamic therapy and different gingival retraction agents on bond integrity of composite to dentin

AIM

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the influence of gingival retraction agents (Expasyl and Viscostat) and different conditioning methods (Total-etch, Self-etch, and PDT) on bond integrity of composite to dentin.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

One hundred and eighty, third molars were collected cleaned and disinfected in thymol solution. The specimens were rooted vertically up to cementoenamel junction within polyvinyl cylinders (PVC). Based on gingival retraction materials samples were divided into three groups (n = 60). Group A: dentin applied with Expasyl; Group B: Viscostat was applied on dentin and Group C: Control. Dentin surface was treated with different surface conditioners. Etch and rinse, PDT MBP, and Two-step self-etch. A bonding agent was applied and composite buildup was done. Samples were placed in the universal testing machine for SBS. Bond failure was assessed using a stereomicroscope. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's post hoc test compared the means and standard deviations (SD) after SBS testing (p = 0.05).

RESULTS

The highest score of bond strength was exhibited by group C1 (21.14 ± 1.05 MPa-Etch & rinse + Tetric-N- Bond) whereas group C2 (12.15 ± 0.28 -PDT MBPS + Tetric-N-Bond, No treatment group) demonstrated the lowest SBS. Based on the application of haemostatic agent, bond values among subgroups A1 (18.75 ± 1.05 MPa - Expasyl + Etch & rinse + Tetric-N-bond) and B1 (17.84 ± 0.11 MPa -Viscostat + Etch & rinse + Tetric-N-Bond) was comparable (p>0.05). Based on the conditioning methods, bond scores among groups C1 (21.14 ± 1.05 MPa -Etch & rinse + Tetric-N- Bond) and C3 (19.05 ± 1.28 MPa -Clearfill SE) were comparable (p >0.05).

CONCLUSION

Viscostat and Expasyl result in compromised bond integrity of composite restoration to dentin in etch and rinse and self-etch group compared to no treatment group. However, the pre-application of Viscostat and Expasyl on dentin conditioned with PDT improved bond integrity of composite resin.

Influence of photodynamic therapy and different conventional methods on conditioning of lithium di silicate ceramics bonded to metallic brackets: An assessment of bond strength

AIM

The aim of the current study was to assess the effect of different conditioning methods on Lithium di silicate (LDC) employing conventional and contemporary regimes bonded to metallic brackets.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

70 discs of LDC were prepared and polished to attain smooth surface. Samples were allocated into seven groups according to ceramic surface conditioning. Group 1 surface treated with Er-YAG laser and saline (S), Group 2 PDT using MBP + S, Group 3 H F + S (control), Group 3 HF (Hydrofluoric acid) + saline, Group 4 HF (Hydrofluoric acid) + ultrasonic bath (UB) + S, Group 5 sand blasting the glass ceramic surface with 120 um Al₂O₃, Group 6 LDC surface conditioned with SECP(Etch and Prime) and Group 7 ECL(Laser) + S on was irradiated on LDC. Both chemical and mechanical surface treatments of LDC were followed by placement of metallic brackets. Samples were arranged in universal testing machine for shear bond strength (SBS) testing. Bond failure of brackets were assessed using ARI. To assess and compare the mean and standard deviations (SD) among experimental groups analysis of variance (ANOVA) was employed. All treatment combination means were compared using the post hoc Tukey's multiple comparison test at a significance level of (p ≤ 0.05).

RESULTS

SBS values of Group 2 H F acid + S displayed highest bond durability (22.28 ± 1.09 MPa). Whereas, specimens in Group 4 surface treated with 120 μm Al₂O₃ displayed lowest SBS scores (11.81 ± 0.55 MPa) and these bond scores were comparable to PDT using MBP + S (12.54 ± 1.09 MPa) (p > 0.05). LDC surface treated by ECL + S (21.11 ± 3.85 MPa), HF + UB + S (19.28 ± 0.52 MPa) exhibited results comparable to HF acid + S (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

LDC conditioned with HFS still remains as gold standard. Use of PDT for surface treatment of LDC and bonded to metallic bracket is not recommended as it results in decreased bond durability. Use of ECL-S and HF + UB + S has a potential to be used alternatively to HFS for LDC conditioning.

Comparison of adhesive bond strength among fiber reinforced post and core with different cementation techniques: In vitro study

AIM

To investigate push-out bond strength (PBS) of fiber post to radicular dentin after using different cementation techniques.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Sixty single-rooted premolars were disinfected and cleaned by mechanical instrumentation. S1, S2, and SX were used for canal shaping and finishing of the canal was carried out using F1 and F2. This was followed by constant irrigation and smear layer removal using 17%EDTA. The canal was dried filled with gutta-percha and canal space was prepared using a peso reamer. Based on cementation techniques, samples were randomly allocated into six groups. Group 1: One-step Monoblock MC; Group 2: One-step, Monoblock MC-NA (no adhesive) GFP; Group 3: One-step, RX-MC-Monoblock; Group 4: Two-step, RX-MC; Group 5: Two-step, RX-FZ; and Group 6: Two-step RX-FZ-custom post. All specimens were mounted in polyvinyl pipes using acrylic resin up to cement enamel junction. All specimens were mounted in a universal testing machine subjected to push-out forces at a speed of 0.5 mm/min. Five samples from each group were sputter-coated with 6 nm gold thickness for 300 s at 250 mA. The coated specimens were assessed under the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey Kramer multiple comparisons tests were performed to compare means among groups maintaining the level of significance at (p < 0.001).

RESULTS

The highest PBS was displayed in RX-MC-Monoblock (199.020 ± 21.432 MPa). Whereas, lowest PBS was found in Monoblock MC-NA (no adhesive)-GFP (76.440 ± 9.468 MPa). Among one-step groups, RX-MC Monoblock exhibited the highest PBS (199.020 ± 21.432 MPa) comparable to one-step Monoblock MC (134.28 ± 19.37 MPa) (p > 0.05). Similarly, among two-steps groups, two-step RX-MC demonstrated significantly higher PBS values than two-step RX-FZ (143.340 ± 23.68 MPa) and RX-FZ-custom post (86.90 ± 7.41 MPa) (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

One-step RX-MC-Monoblock technique using self-adhesive cement and core foundation composite resin material multicore flow when cured simultaneously exhibited the highest bond integrity of post retention compared to other cementation technique.

Influence of Propolis, Ozone and Photodynamic therapy in root canal disinfection on resin bond strength to radicular dentin

AIM

The aim of the present study was to assess post space disinfection using different irrigants and their effect on radicular dentin bond to SERC.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Forty single rooted mandibular 2nd premolars were collected and disinfected. All samples were decoronated maintaining root length of 12 mm and embedded vertically in acrylic resin. Shaping of the canal was performed using reciprocating system. Canals were dried using paper points and obturated with gutta percha via lateral condensation. Peso-reamers were used to create post space up to 10 mm. The post space was irrigated with 1% NaOCl before being randomly allocated into four groups (n = 10) according to different methods of canal disinfection. Samples in group 1 were subjected to photoactivated disinfection (PAD), group 2 irrigated with ethanol based propolis group 3 disinfected using ozone and group 4 irrigated with 2.25 % NaOCl with 17 % EDTA and ECL. GFP was fitted using SERC. Each sample was cut into 1 mm from coronal, middle and apical and subjected to pushout bond strength (PBS) via universal testing machine. Fracture analysis were confirmed by stereomicroscope at 40x magnification. For comparison of means, Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey multiple comparison test was used maintaining the level of significance at p <  0.05.

RESULTS

The highest PBS at all three levels were found in group 4, canal disinfected with 2.5 % NaOCl with 17 % EDTA and ECYL. Whereas, the lowest PBS was observed in group 1. Inter group comparison, prosthetic space disinfected with propolis extract showed no significant difference to group 4 canal disinfected with 2.5 % NaOCl with 17 % EDTA and ECYL at all three levels (p > 0.05). Intra group comparison in all experimental groups showed no significant difference was noted in coronal and middle thirds of group 1, group 2 and group 3 respectively (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

2.5 % NaOCl with EDTA and ECL treatment (group 4) remains the gold standard when used as a final canal irrigant. Propolis can be used as potential irrigant for canal disinfectant provided if the composition becomes standardized.

Repair strength and surface topography of lithium disilicate and hybrid resin ceramics with LLLT and photodynamic therapy in comparison to hydrofluoric acid

The aim was to compare the repair bond strength and surface topography of lithium disilicate ceramics (LDC) and hybrid resin ceramics (HRC) using different surface conditioning treatments [low level laser therapy (LLLT), photodynamic therapy (PDT), hydrofluoric acid (HF) with silane and air abrasion (AA) and silane].

MATERIAL AND METHOD

Sixty specimens each of LDC and HRC were used. Discs were prepared for each group (6 × 2 mm), conditioned using different regimes. Specimens in group 1 and 5 were laser irradiated using Er,Cr:YSGG (ECYL), group 2 and 6 were conditioned using methylene blue photosensitizer (PDT), group 3 and 7 surface was treated with hydrofluoric acid and silane (HFA-S), group 4 and 8 conditioned with Al₂O₃ air abrasion and silane (AA-S). A Porcelain Repair Kit was used according to manufacturer recommendation in all samples. Peak universal bond adhesive was rubbed on ceramic surface and then bonded with composite resin. For shear bond strength testing the specimens were placed in a universal testing machine. A stereomicroscope at 40x magnification was used to analyse failure pattern. Five specimens in each group after surface treatment were evaluated for surface changes and topography using scanning electron microscopy. The mean repair bond strength was calculated using ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test at a significance level of (p < 0.05).

RESULT

The highest repair bond strength was observed in group 3 (LDC) (20.57 ± 3.58 MPa) (HFA-S), whereas, the lowest score was displayed in Group 2 (LDC) using methylene blue photosensitizer (MBPS) (12.18 ± 1.08 MPa). Similarly, in HRC the highest repair SBS was presented in group 8 (AA-S) (20.52 ± 2.51 MPa) and the lowest SBS values were exhibited by PDT treated group 6 (13.22 ± 0.62 MPa).

CONCLUSION

A combination of mechanical and chemical surface treatments should be used in order to achieve adequate repair bond strength between resin composites and ceramic interface of LDC and HRC.

Surface treatment of RMGIC to composite resin using different photosensitizers and lasers: A bond assessment of closed Sandwich restoration

AIM

The aim of present study was to assess and compare different conditioning methods (laser, PDT and conventional) on shear bond strength (SBS) of resin modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) bonded to composite (sandwich technique).

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Fifty specimens were prepared from RMGIC and were packed in a teflon mould placed on glass slab. Through each of the glass slab the cement was light cured for 20 s. Now samples were randomly allocated into five groups (n = 10) according to pre-treatment protocols. In group 1 RMGIC were conditioned with MBP using PDT, Samples in group 2 treated with Er,Cr:YSGG (ECYL), group 3 pre-treated with Nd:YAG laser (NYL), samples in group 4 surface conditioned with air abrasion (AA) and group 5 conditioned with 37 % phosphoric acid (PA). Specimens after conditioning were rinsed with distilled water. Adhesive Adper Single Bond 2 was applied on treated surface of RMGIC and cured. Teflon mold was utilized to hold the composite Filtek Z250 in an incremental technique. For SBS testing all specimens were placed under shear knife edge at 1 K N at a speed of 0.5mm2 until bond failure. Optical microscope was used to evaluate failure pattern at 10x magnification. The data of SBS in Megapascal were subjected to statistical test. Analysis of variance was followed by Post hoc test with level of significance at 5 %.

RESULT

The maximum SBS was found in group 5 RMGIC conditioned with 37 % PA (16.45 ± 0.32 MPa). Whereas, group 1 (MBP, PDT) demonstrated significantly lower bond integrity (9.82 ± 1.08 MPa) compared to all experimental groups. Bond integrity of RMGIC surface treated with MBP, PDT (9.82 ± 1.08 MPa), group 3 lased with NYL (11.47 ± 0.53 MPa) and samples in group 4 conditioned with AA (11.23 ± 0.47 MPa) were comparable (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

ECYL has a potential to be used for conditioning of RMGIC prior to composite restoration (sandwich technique). MBP at 100 mg/L deteriorates SBS of composite to RMGIC.

Two-year Follow-up of Ceramic Veneers and a Full Crown Treated With Self-etching Ceramic Primer: A Case Report

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

The Monobond Etch & Prime seems to be an efficient option for adhesive cementation of ultrathin veneers and full crown ceramic with good properties after two years of clinical follow-up.

SUMMARY

The use of the self-etching ceramic primer combines the stages of acid conditioning and silanization in cementation procedures of ceramic restorations. The protocol is a simpler and safer alternative to the conventional protocol for surface treatment of silica-based ceramics. This case report describes the steps of an esthetic rehabilitation with ultrathin veneers and full crown based on lithium disilicate treated with a ceramic primer (Monobond Etch & Prime, Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein). After two years of clinical follow-up, the restorations presented satisfactory esthetic and functional performance, color stability, surface and marginal integrity, and absence of cracks and debonding. More research is needed to investigate the clinical performance and longevity of the ceramic restorations treated with self-etching ceramic primers.

Photodynamic activation of irrigation (using different laser prototypes) on push out bond strength of fiber posts

BACKGROUND

To evaluate the influence of photodynamic therapy (PDT) and light activated irrigation (LAI) using different laser prototypes Er,Cr:YSGG (ECYL), Er:Yag (EYL), Nd-Yag (NYL) on pushout bond strength of Pre-fabricated fiber reinforced composite (PFRC) post to radicular dentin.

MATERIAL AND METHOD

Fifty maxillary and mandibular teeth were collected, cleaned and decoronated. Canals were instrumented using crown-down technique. Flaring of canals was performed using protaper S1, SX files. F1, F2 and F3 files were utilized for finishing of canal preparations. Prepared root canals were dried and obturated with gutta percha. Teeth were placed vertically within the section of polyvinyl pipes using acrylic resin. Post space preparation was completed using peso-reamers. Based on the PDT and laser activated irrigation (LAI) with different laser prototypes, samples were divided into five groups of 10 specimens each. Group 1- PDT, group 2-5.25 % NaOCl (sodium hypochlorite) and 17 % EDTA (ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid), group 3-5.25 % NaOCl with 17 % EDTA and NYL, group 4-5.25 % NaOCl with 17 % EDTA and EYL ; and group 5-5.25 % NaOCl +17 % EDTA and ECYL. Fiber post were luted in root canals with self-etch dual cure cement and teeth were sectioned at three levels (apical, middle and coronal). Push-out test was performed by placing the specimens in universal testing machine. Failure analysis of debonded surfaces was evaluated using stereomicroscope at 40× magnification. Means and standard deviations of push out bond strength were assessed by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Comparison between means of push out bond strength was evaluated using Tukey multiple comparison tests (p = 0.05).

RESULT

The highest push out bond strength was observed in group 5 at all three levels, coronal (10.08 ± 0.74 MPa), middle (8.95 ± 0.94 MPa) and apical (6.00 ± 0.88 MPa). The lowest push out bond strength was demonstrated by group 2 at all levels, coronal (6.15 ± 1.22 MPa), middle (5.65 ± 0.95 MPa) and apical (2.25 ± 0.55 MPa). Intra-group comparison showed decrease in push out bond strength in the coronal to apical direction among all investigated groups. Inter-group comparison exhibited comparable push out bond strength at all three levels of root for group 1 and group 2 specimens (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

LAI with different laser prototypes improved push out bond values of PFRC post to root dentin as an adjunct to NaOCl and EDTA treatment. PDT improved push out strength compared to conventional canal cleaning regime.

Dentin bond strength of bioactive cement in comparison to conventional resin cement when photosensitized with Er,Cr:YSGG Laser

Objective:

The purpose of the present study was to assess dentin shear bond strength (SBS) and mode of bond failure of bioactive cement (BA) in comparison to conventional resin cement when photosensitized by Er,Cr: YSGG Laser (ECL).

Methods:

The present in-vitro study was carried out from March 2019 to May 2019. Sixty permanent non-carious, intact, non-fractured molars were isolated and mounted vertically in acrylic resin. Buccal surface of each molar tooth was ground, polished and surface treated with ECL. Ketac conditioner was applied on the surface washed and air dried surface. Tetric -N-Bond adhesive was applied on forty-five samples and light cured. The specimens were allocated into four groups (n=15) according to the type of cement used i.e., Calibra (C), BA, Variolink II (V) and Maxcem-Elite (ME). For SBS testing was performed using the universal testing machine. Eight samples from each group were assessed for modes of failure. Means and standard deviations were compared using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey’s post hoc test at a significance level of p < 0.05.

Results:

The highest mean SBS was observed in group ECL-C (21.55±3.08). The lowest mean SBS was displayed in group ECL-ME (14.25±3.55). Mean SBS values for group ECL-C (21.55±3.08) and group ECL-V (20.74±4.15) were comparable (p <0.05). Similarly, SBS values of group ECL-BA (15.48±3.62) and group ECL-ME (14.25±3.55) were comparable (p <0.05).

Conclusion:

Dentin surface conditioned with Er,Cr: YSGG and bonded to C and V cements exhibit favourable bond strength values.

Lithium di silicate ceramic surface treated with Er,Cr:YSGG and other conditioning regimes bonded to orthodontic bracket

Aim

To assess bond integrity and modes of failure of metallic brackets to lithium disilicate ceramics (LDC) conditioned with Er,Cr:YSGG laser (ECL).

Material and methods

Sixty LDC were arbitrarily allocated into six groups (n = 15) according to the type of ceramic surface conditioning treatment. Group 1 surface treated with silane (S) only, group 2 surface etched with hydrofluoric acid (HF)+ S, group 3 surface conditioned with HF+ ultrasonic bath (UB)+ S, group 4 sand blasting (SB) of glass ceramic surface with 50 µm Al₂O₃, group 5 surface conditioned with self-etch ceramic primer (SECP) and in group 6 surface treated with ECL + S. After conditioning, the specimens were positioned in a universal testing device for shear bond strength (SBS) testing. Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) was used to determine sites of bond failure. Among experimental groups analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey multiple comparison test was used at a significance level of (p < 0.05).

Results

The highest SBS values were observed in group 3 HF+ UB + S (18.21 ± 1.241) and the lowest SBS values were displayed group 1 surface treated with S only (5.21 ± 0.23). Specimens surface conditioned in group 2 with HF+ S (17.85 ± 1.25), group 3 HF+ UB + S (18.21 ± 1.241) and group 6 ECL + S (17.09 ± 1.114) unveiled comparable SBS values (p > 0.05).

Conclusion

LDC conditioned with ECL at (4.5 W and 30 Hz) has a potential to be used in clinical settings alternate to HF acid.

Adhesive bond integrity of dentin conditioned by photobiomodulation and bonded to bioactive restorative material

AIM

The aim of this in-vitro study is to investigate the shear bond strength (SBS) of Bioactive bulk fill restorative material (BARM) (Activa) by surface pre-treatment using Er,Cr:YSGG (ECL) on dentin in comparison to conventional dentin conditioning techniques.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Sixty extracted non-carious, non-fractured, restoration free human molars were collected and mounted vertically in acrylic resin. The buccal surface of all molars were ground and polished with abrasive paper. The specimens were randomly allocated into four groups (n = 15) according to the type of surface treatment. Group 1 ECL + BARM, Group 2 ECL + Ketac + BARM, Group 3 Conventional Etch and Rinse + BARM, Group 4 Self-etch + BARM. The specimens from each group were positioned in a universal testing machine for SBS testing. Ten samples from each group were assessed for modes of failure. Means and standard deviations were compared using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's post hoc test at a significance level of p < 0.05.

RESULTS

BARM bonded to dentin surface etched with conventional etch and rinse technique (group 3) exhibited SBS value of 18.45 ± 1.34. Similarly, the lowest bond strength was observed by group 4 (self-etch regime) bonded to BARM (16.09 ± 0.81). The bond strength among groups 1 (ECL + BARM), 2 (ECL + Ketac + BARM) and 3 (etch and rinse + BARM) were found to be comparable (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Conditioning of dentin with photobiomodulation for the adhesive bonding of BARM showed comparable bond strength outcomes to conventional conditioning techniques.

Influence of phototherapy on bond strength and failure modes of enamel bonded to ceramic and metallic brackets with different surface treatment regimes

AIM

The aim of the current study was to assess efficacy of phototherapy on mode of failure and shear bond strength among different brackets in combination with dissimilar conditioning regimens on enamel surface.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Ninety maxillary premolars were arbitrarily assigned into six groups (n = 15 each) based on surface conditioning of enamel. Group 1 and group 2 surface treated with total etch + rinse. Group 3 and group 4 surface conditioned with Er,Cr:YSGG. Group 5 and group 6 surface treated with self-etching primer (SEP). Now based on the type of bracket bonded to enamel surface. Group 1, 3 and 5 were bonded to metallic brackets (MB). Similarly, group 2,4,6 were bonded to ceramic bracket (CB). All samples from each group were positioned in a in a universal testing machine for shear bond strength testing. Ten samples from each group were used to discover the sites of bond failure using ARI with stereomicroscope. The mean shear bond strength of six groups were compared by analysis of variance (ANOVA) and pairwise comparison between groups were analysed with the Post hoc Tukey test at a significance level of (p < 0.05).

RESULTS

The maximum SBS values were displayed by group 1 total etch + rinse MB (14.84 ± 1.78) whereas the minimum shear bond strength values were exhibited by group 6 SEP CB (9.99 ± 0.91). Samples treated with total etch + rinse MB (14.84 ± 1.78) and group 3 Er,Cr:YSGG MB unveiled comparable bond strength (p > 0.05). Similarly, experimental group 2 total etch + rinse CB (12.52 ± 1.28) was found to be comparable to group 4 Er,Cr:YSGG CB (12.14 ± 4.12) (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Enamel etched for bonding bracket with Er,Cr:YSGG phototherapy at (4.5 W and 30 Hz) displayed comparable bond strength to conventional Transbond XT independent on the type of brackets used.
