Abstract
OBJECTIVE Population-based studies of reasons for not participating in diabetes self-management education (DSME) are scarce. Therefore, we investigated what sociodemographic and disease-related factors are associated with participation in DSME, the reasons for not participating in DSME and how participants evaluate DSME. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS We used data from the nationwide survey "Disease knowledge and information needs-Diabetes mellitus 2017", which included a total of 1396 participants diagnosed with diabetes mellitus (diabetes; n = 394 DSME-participants, n = 1002 DSME-never-participants). Analyses used weighted logistic or multinominal regression analyses with bivariate and multivariable approaches. RESULTS Participants were more likely to attend DSME if they had a medium (OR 1.82 [95%CI 1.21-2.73]),or high (OR 2.04 [95%CI 1.30-3.21]) level of education, had type 1 diabetes (OR 2.46 [1.24-4.90]) and insulin treatment (OR 1.96 [95%CI 1.33-2.90]). Participants were less likely to attend DSME if they lived in East Germany (OR 0.57 [95%CI 0.39-0.83]), had diabetes for >2 to 5 years (OR 0.52 [95%CI 0.31-0.88] compared to >5 years), did not agree that diabetes is a lifelong disease (OR 0.30 [95%CI 0.15-0.62], had never been encouraged by their physician to attend DSME (OR 0.19 [95%CI 0.13-0.27]) and were not familiar with disease management programs (OR 0.67 [95%CI 0.47-0.96]). The main reasons for non-participation were participant's personal perception that DSME was not necessary (26.6%), followed by lack of recommendation from treating physician (25.7%) and lack of information on DSME (20.7%). DSME-participants found DSME more helpful if they had a medium educational level (OR 2.06 [95%CI 1.10-3.89] ref: low level of education) and less helpful if they were never encouraged by their treatment team (OR 0.46 [95%CI 0.26-0.82]). DISCUSSION Professionals treating persons with diabetes should encourage their patients to attend DSME and underline that diabetes is a lifelong disease. Overall, the majority of DSME participants rated DSME as helpful.

Abstract
ABSTRACT African Americans (AA) experience a disparate effect of type II diabetes (T2D). For this nurse-led pilot study, a pre-validated 6-week diabetes self-management education (DSME) program was implemented in a faith community setting and tailored to the participants' faith and culture by using short scriptural lessons, prayers, and individual sharing. Participants demonstrated improvements in fasting blood glucose (p = .042), diabetes knowledge (p = .002), and psychosocial self-efficacy (p = .001). Although generalizability of findings is limited, the structure and methods used in tailoring this DSME program could be transferable to other faith-based settings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Persons with diabetes use continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) to self-manage their diabetes. Care partners (CPs) frequently become involved in supporting persons with diabetes in the management of their diabetes. However, persons with diabetes and CP dyads may require more communication and problem-solving skills regarding how to share and respond to CGM data. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences of persons with diabetes and CPs who participated in the Share "plus" intervention, which addresses dyadic communication strategies, problem-solving, and action planning to promote sharing of CGM data among the dyad. METHODS Ten dyads participated in the Share "plus" telehealth intervention. Participants were interviewed during and after the Share "plus" intervention. Thematic analysis was used to analyze interview data. RESULTS During postsession interviews, dyads described feeling a sense of shared responsibility yet viewed the persons with diabetes as ultimately responsible for the disease. Additionally, dyads shared that communication patterns improved and were able to recognize the negative aspects of previously established communication patterns. Dyads reported communication focused on hypoglycemia episodes while also differing in the frequency they reviewed CGM data and set alerts. Overall, dyads expressed positive reactions to the Share "plus" intervention. CONCLUSIONS Share "plus" was helpful in promoting positive CGM-related communication among dyads and encouraged more CP support. CPs play an important role in supporting older adults with type 1 diabetes. Communication strategies help support dyad involvement in CGM data sharing and self-management among persons with diabetes.

Abstract
Although diabetes is common among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), few data exists on how migrants from Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) experience living with these two coexisting conditions in France. The objective of this study was to analyze perception of polypathology among PLWHA from SSA with type 2 diabetes and identify barriers and facilitators to their self-management. A qualitative study was conducted using semi-structured interviews from November 2019 to April 2020 with participants selected from a cohort of PLWHA and diabetes at Avicenne University Hospital. A total of 12 semi-structured interviews were conducted and analyzed using thematic analysis with inductive approach. Stigma remained a major issue in self-managing HIV, and some participants did not consider themselves as having a polypathology, as HIV has always been considered as a distinct condition. In general, emotion-based resources (e.g spirituality, trust in the medical discourse) and social support were mobilized more than problem-solving resources (e.g perception of medication as life-saving). Participants used the same main resource in self-management of HIV and diabetes, and resources used differed from participant to participant. This study highlighted challenges in self-management of diabetes and HIV in this population and complexity related to the socioeconomic and cultural specificities. Self-management could be more successful if patients and carers move in the same direction, having identified the individual coping resources to reach objectives.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To test the effect of a podiatric health education activity on foot self-care and the degree of foot-related disability in a group of people with diabetes mellitus (DM) in the province of Seville. A pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design was used. METHODS Twenty-nine people with DM participated. The intervention was a podiatric health education activity consisting of a 1-hour informative talk. Foot pain-related disability was measured using the Manchester Foot Pain and Disability Index. The degree of foot self-care was measured with the University of Malaga Foot Self-care questionnaire. RESULTS One month after the intervention, both parameters had improved significantly. The mean score on the Manchester Foot Pain and Disability Index increased from 59.96 (SD, 8.69) at baseline to 67.39 (SD, 6.99) at 1 month, and the mean score on the University of Malaga Foot Self-care questionnaire improved from 11.65 (SD, 20.07) at baseline to 4.52 (SD, 5.47) after 1 month. CONCLUSIONS Therapeutic education increases the level of self-care and decreases the degree of foot-related disability in people with DM.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVE We sought to investigate knowledge and skills of type 1 diabetes (T1D) management among young people living with the disease and their caregivers. Our aim is to provide baseline evidence to inform T1D self-management education for young people living with the disease and their caregivers. BACKGROUND Both local and international guidelines recommend ongoing T1D self-management education for people living with the disease. This is because T1D often develops among young people who rarely have the competencies to adequately manage their condition. However, the extent to which young people living with T1D and their caregivers can self-manage this chronic disease in a low-resource country like Ghana is unknown. METHODS Using a phenomenological study design, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 28 young people living with type 1 diabetes, 12 caregivers and 6 healthcare providers in southern Ghana. Data were collected at homes, hospitals and support group centres of participants via face-to-face interviews, photovoice and video-conferencing. The data were analysed thematically using QSR NVivo 11. RESULTS The young people living with T1D and their caregivers demonstrated knowledge and skills in the self-monitoring of blood glucose, and the treatment of hyperglycaemia. Areas of more marginal or lack of knowledge were concerning carbohydrate counting, severe hypoglycaemia and the management of intercurrent illnesses. Young persons living with T1D and their caregivers received their management information from healthcare and non-healthcare providers. Access to diabetes self-management education influenced T1D management knowledge and practices. CONCLUSION Young people living with type 1 diabetes and their caregivers possessed limited scope of knowledge on type 1 diabetes self-management. Multiple sources of T1D knowledge were found, some of which may not be helpful to patients. The knowledge gaps identified compromises transitional independence and self-management capacity. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE It is important for clinicians and organizations that provide T1D education to provide diabetes self-management education also on managing hypoglycaemia, carbohydrate counting and managing T1D during intercurrent life events among young people living with T1D. NO PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION Patients and their caregivers were interviewed as research participants. They did not conceptualize, analyse, interpret or prepare the manuscript.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate, how participation in structured diabetes self-management education (DSME) programs is associated with perceived level of knowledge about diabetes, information needs, information sources and disease distress. METHODS We included 796 ever- and 277 never-DSME participants of the population-based survey "Disease knowledge and information needs - Diabetes mellitus (2017)" from Germany. Data on perceived level of diabetes knowledge (12 items), information needs (11 items), information sources (13 items) and disease distress (2 indices) were collected. Multiple logistic regression analyses were used to examine the association of DSME-participation with these outcomes. RESULTS DSME-participants showed a higher level of diabetes knowledge compared to never-DSME participants, particularly in aspects concerning diabetes in general (odds ratio 2.53; 95% confidence intervals 1.48-4.33), treatment (2.41; 1.36-4.26), acute complications (1.91; 1.07-3.41) and diabetes in everyday life (1.83; 1.04-3.22). DSME-participants showed higher information needs regarding late complications (1.51; 1.04-2.18) and acute complications (1.71; 1.71-2.48) than DSME never participants. DSME-participants more frequently consulted diabetologists (5.54; 3.56-8.60) and diabetes care specialists (5.62; 3.61-8.75) as information sources. DSME participation was not associated with disease distress. CONCLUSION DSME is a valuable tool for improving individual knowledge about diabetes. However, DSME should focus more on psychosocial aspects to reduce the disease burden.

Abstract
PURPOSE Self-management behavior (SMB) plays a significant role in glycemic control. This study aimed to explore the factors related to SMB among patients with type 2 diabetes and how these factors interacted with each other. PATIENTS AND METHODS Patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes were recruited from 18 community healthcare stations (CHSs) from six community healthcare centers (CHCs) in Beijing, China from April to May in 2017. Motivation, competence, autonomy support, social support, self-management skills, adherence to self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) and haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) measurement were tested by questionnaire. Correlation analysis and path analysis were performed so as to identify the factors associated with patients' SMB. RESULTS A total of 532 participants completed this study. Participants who have good compliance to SMBG got higher scores in social support (F = 7.68, p = 0.01), competence (F = 10.47, p = 0.01), and skills (F = 12.34, p < 0.01). Higher competence (β = 0.03, P < 0.001), higher social support (β = 0.01, P < 0.001), better skills(β = 0.01, P < 0.001) directly led to better adherence to SMBG. Social support had a positive effect on autonomy support (β = 0.69, P < 0.001), motivation (β = 0.45, P < 0.001), competence (β = 0.28, P < 0.001), skills (β = 0.14, P < 0.001), which was also indirectly linked to better adherence to SMBG. Better self-management skills directly led to better adherence to HbA1c measurement (β = 0.03, P < 0.001). Social support had a positive effect on autonomy support (β = 0.69, P < 0.001), motivation (β = 0.45, P < 0.001), competence (β = 0.28, P < 0.001), skills (β = 0.14, P < 0.001), which was also indirectly linked to better adherence to HbA1c measurement. CONCLUSION Self-determination theory and social support theory were practical in explaining SMB in Chinese population. Competence, motivation and social support played an important role in diabetic self-management. Paying attention to the promotion of individual's intrinsic motivation and self-efficacy may be able to help patients maintain self-management behavior in the long-term routine.
