Abstract
PURPOSE To describe sleep and quality of life of pediatric patients with chronic obstructive respiratory diseases and to ascertain whether or not sleep quality correlates with quality of life in this population. METHODS Participants aged 5 to 18 years with cystic fibrosis (CF), severe asthma, or postinfectious bronchiolitis obliterans (PIBO) receiving regular follow-up at a pediatric respiratory medicine center were recruited. Two questionnaires were used: the Brazilian version of the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC) and the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (Peds-QL). RESULTS A total of 46 individuals were included: 30 with CF, 9 with severe asthma, and 7 with PIBO. Almost two-thirds of the patients and their parents or guardians scored at least 39 points on the SDSC, suggesting poor sleep quality. Significantly higher overall median scores were observed in those with severe asthma. Patients and their parents or guardians scored a median of 77 and 80 points respectively on the Peds-QL, with parents of patients with CF scoring higher than any other group. There was a moderate inverse correlation between sleep disorders and quality of life (r = - 0.532 for patients and r = - 0.606 for parents; p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Children and adolescents with chronic obstructive respiratory diseases experience impairment in their sleep quality and quality of life. Sleep disorders and quality of life have a moderate negative correlation.

Abstract
Dravet syndrome is a severe infantile onset developmental and epileptic encephalopathy associated with mutations in the sodium channel alpha 1 subunit gene SCN1A. Prospective data on long-term developmental and clinical outcomes are limited; this study seeks to evaluate the clinical course of Dravet syndrome over a 10-year period and identify predictors of developmental outcome. SCN1A mutation-positive Dravet syndrome patients were prospectively followed up in the UK from 2010 to 2020. Caregivers completed structured questionnaires on clinical features and disease burden; the Epilepsy & Learning Disability Quality of Life Questionnaire, the Adaptive Behavioural Assessment System-3 and the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children. Sixty-eight of 113 caregivers (60%) returned posted questionnaires. Developmental outcome worsened at follow-up (4.45 [SD 0.65], profound cognitive impairment) compared to baseline (2.9 [SD 1.1], moderate cognitive impairment, P < 0.001), whereas epilepsy severity appeared less severe at 10-year follow-up (P = 0.042). Comorbidities were more apparent at 10-year outcome including an increase in autistic features (77% [48/62] versus 30% [17/57], χ2 = 19.9, P < 0.001), behavioural problems (81% [46/57] versus 38% [23/60], χ2 = 14.1, P < 0.001) and motor/mobility problems (80% [51/64] versus 41% [24/59], χ2 = 16.9, P < 0.001). Subgroup analysis demonstrated a more significant rise in comorbidities in younger compared to older patients. Predictors of worse long-term developmental outcome included poorer baseline language ability (P < 0.001), more severe baseline epilepsy severity (P = 0.003) and a worse SCN1A genetic score (P = 0.027). Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy had not been discussed with a medical professional in 35% (24/68) of participants. Over 90% of caregivers reported a negative impact on their own health and career opportunities. Our study identifies important predictors and potential biomarkers of developmental outcome in Dravet syndrome and emphasizes the significant caregiver burden of illness. The negative impact of epilepsy severity at baseline on long-term developmental outcomes highlights the importance of implementing early and focused therapies whilst the potential impact of newer anti-seizure medications requires further study.

Abstract
Sleep disorders are particularly important in the development of children, affecting the emotional, behavioural, and cognitive spheres. The incidence of these disorders has been assessed in different types of populations, including patients with a history of premature birth, who, from the literature data, would seem to have an increased incidence of sleep disorders at school age. The aims of the present study are: (i.) to assess the presence of sleep disorders in a population of very preterm infants at 6-36 months who are at low risk of neurological impairments using the Italian version of the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC) adapted for this age group, and (ii.) to identify possible differences from a control group of term-born infants. A total of 217 low-risk preterm and 129 typically developing infants and toddlers were included in the study. We found no differences in the SDSC total and the factor scores between these two populations of infants. Low-risk preterm infants and toddlers showed similar incidences of sleep disorders to their term-born peers. Further clinical assessments will be needed to confirm these data at school age.

Abstract
FOXG1 syndrome is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder associated with severe cognitive dysfunction, autistic behavior, and early-onset hyperkinetic movement disorders. Patients have also been reported to experience sleep disturbances. However, these findings are mainly based on subjective caregivers' reports, and limited by small case numbers. Moreover, no studies using objective evaluation tools, such as actigraphy, have been reported. We analyzed the clinical and sleep manifestations of children with FOXG1 syndrome registered in the International FOXG1 Research Foundation registry database. A total of 258 individuals with FOXG1 syndrome were included in this research. 132 (51.16%) had sleep disturbances. The more impaired of language acquisitions (absence of speech, OR: 3.99, 95%CI = 1.69-9.42, p = 0.002), hyperkinetic movement disorders (OR: 2.64, 95%CI = 1.34-5.20 p = 0.005) and feeding difficulties (OR: 2.81, 95% CI = 1.52-5.19, p = 0.001) were significantly associated with an increase in odds of sleep disturbance after adjusting for age, sex, and antiepileptic drugs. We also performed sleep studies on six individuals with FOXG1 syndrome using The Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ), the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC), and 7-day data from Actiwatch. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and 7-day data from Actiwatch were also used to evaluate the sleep condition of their parents. The CSHQ scores revealed bedtime resistance, sleep onset delay, sleep duration, sleep anxiety, night-waking, and parasomnia. Sleep-wake transition disorders and disorders of initiating and maintaining sleep were also suggested by the SDSC scores. The children's actigraphy revealed short sleep durations, impaired sleep efficiency, longer wake after sleep onset, and frequent night-waking. All caregivers reported significantly higher PSQI scores, mildly declined sleep efficiency, and shorter total sleep duration. Sleep disturbances, especially in initiating and maintaining sleep, are common in individuals with FOXG1 syndrome and their caregivers. Sleep disorders in patients with FOXG1 syndrome and their caregivers should be investigated.

Abstract
Cerebral palsy (CP) represents the most common motor impairment in childhood. The presence of sleep problems has not yet been investigated with an instrument specifically designed for this population. In this hospital-based, prospective study, N = 100 children (M = 7.9, range: 2-18 years) with CP were included. All patients underwent pediatric neurologists' screening incorporating instruments (Data Collection Form; Gross Motor Functions Classification System, GMFCS; Bimanual Fine Motor Function, BFMF) recommended by the "Surveillance of Cerebral Palsy in Europe (SCPE)". Parents completed the "Sleep Questionnaire for Children with Severe Psychomotor Impairment (SNAKE)". Children's sleep behavior was increasingly conspicuous, with greater gross motor (SNAKE scales: disturbances remaining asleep, daytime sleepiness) and fine motor (additionally SNAKE scale arousal and breathing problems) functional impairment. Overall, a proportion of children showed sleep behavior outside the SNAKE's normal range. No relevant sleep differences were identified between different CP subtypes and comorbidities. Applying a population-specific questionnaire, children's functional impairment seems to be more relevant to their sleep behavior than the CP subtype or CP comorbidities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbance affects quality of life in children receiving chemotherapy.
AIM: The aim of this study was to identify the effect of progressive muscle relaxation on the sleep quality and side effects of chemotherapy in children with cancer.
METHODS: This study used randomized clinical trial with single blind method, where 30 children were allocated randomly to the control group and intervention group. The intervention group received progressive muscle relaxation twice a day, in the morning and evening, 15 minutes each session for 7 days. Control group received routine nursing care.
RESULTS: The study concluded there was no significant difference in the two groups on fatigue and pain. However, progressive muscle relaxation had significant relation to decreased sleep quality score.
CONCLUSION: Relaxation therapy, particularly progressive muscle relaxation, may be one of the nursing cares to improve sleep quality and reduce the side effects of chemotherapy in children with cancer.

Abstract
Despite sleep disturbances are common among youths with Down syndrome (DS), the cognitive and behavioral features associated with sleep problems have not yet been studied extensively. The present study investigated the presence of sleep disturbances in a group of children and adolescents with DS and their cognitive and behavioral correlates. Seventy-one children and adolescents with DS underwent a neuropsychological evaluation, whereas parents completed questionnaires for the screening of the child's sleep, emotional and behavioral problems. We found no association between sleep disturbances and sex, nonverbal IQ, nor adaptive abilities. However, we found that age was positively associated with disorders in initiating and maintaining sleep (DIMS) and disorders of excessive somnolence (DOES), while body mass index was related with DOES. We also detected a relationship between visual-motor integrations and DIMS, as well as multiple associations between sleep disturbances and psychopathological and behavioral problems, mainly externalizing symptoms. The present study provided a detailed characterization of sleep problems in relation to several features of youths with DS. The proper identification of sleep disturbances profile in the DS population could support the process of clinical evaluation, in particular for psychopathological aspects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Survivors of childhood brain tumors are prone to sleep and neurocognitive problems. Effective interventions to improve neurocognitive functioning are largely lacking. In general, sleep problems are negatively related to neurocognitive functioning, but this relationship is unclear in survivors of childhood brain tumors. Therefore, the occurrence of sleep problems, potential risk factors, and the relation between sleep and executive functioning were evaluated. PROCEDURE Baseline data of a randomized controlled trial on the effectiveness of neurofeedback were used. Childhood brain tumor survivors 8-18 years of age with parent-reported neurocognitive complaints ≥2 years after treatment were eligible. Parents completed the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children. Executive functioning was assessed by parents and teachers (Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Functioning). Multiple linear regression analyses were used to examine sociodemographic and medical characteristics and emotional difficulties and hyperactivity/inattention (Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire) as potential risk factors for sleep problems, and to assess the association between sleep and executive functioning. RESULTS Forty-eight percent of survivors (n = 82, 7.0 ± 3.6 years post diagnosis, age 13.8 ± 3.2 years) had sleep problems and scored significantly worse than the norm on the subscales Initiating and Maintaining Sleep, Excessive Somnolence, and the total scale (effect sizes 0.58-0.92). Emotional problems and/or hyperactivity/inattention were independent potential risk factors. Sleep problems were associated with worse parent-reported executive functioning. CONCLUSIONS Sleep problems occur among half of childhood brain tumor survivors with neurocognitive problems, and are associated with worse executive functioning. Future studies should focus on the development of sleep interventions for this population, to improve sleep as well as executive functioning.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This prospective longitudinal study investigated sleep disturbance (SD) and internalizing problems after traumatic injury, including traumatic brain injury (TBI) or extracranial/bodily injury (EI) in children and adolescents, relative to typically developing (TD) children. We also examined longitudinal relations between SD and internalizing problems postinjury. METHOD Participants (N = 87) ages 8-15 included youth with TBI, EI, and TD children. Injury groups were recruited from a Level 1 trauma center after sustaining vehicle-related injuries. Parent-reported SD and internalizing problems were assessed at preinjury/baseline, and 6 and 12 months postinjury. Linear mixed models evaluated the relation of group and time of assessment on outcomes. RESULTS Controlling for age, the combined traumatic injury group experienced significantly higher postinjury levels of SD (p = .042) and internalizing problems (p = .024) than TD children; however, TBI and EI injury groups did not differ from each other. Injury severity was positively associated with SD in the EI group only, but in both groups SD was associated with additional postinjury sequelae, including fatigue and externalizing behavior problems. Internalizing problems predicted subsequent development of SD but not vice versa. The relation between injury and SD 1 year later was consistent with mediation by internalizing problems at 6 months postinjury. CONCLUSIONS Children with both types of traumatic injury demonstrated higher SD and internalizing problems than healthy children. Internalizing problems occurring either prior to or following pediatric injury may be a risk factor for posttraumatic SD. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Children with motor disabilities such as cerebral palsy or neuromuscular diseases present more sleep disorders than their typically developing (TD) peers. However, research on these populations has always been performed using historical normative datasets or controls such as siblings. Therefore, we assessed the sleep quality of children with motor disabilities in comparison with a large, contemporary, general population sample. METHODS Demographic, medical, and the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC) questionnaires were sent to parents of children aged 4-18 years and followed by our tertiary pediatric neurorehabilitation clinic, and to those of school-aged children in regional primary and secondary schools. TD participant data allowed us to set pathological sleep score thresholds (T score ≥70). RESULTS We collected 245 responses for children with motor disabilities and 2891 for those from the general population (37% and 26% response rates, respectively). Cerebral palsy was the most frequent diagnosis (N = 109, 44.5%). Children with motor disabilities had significantly more frequent pathological sleep reported in their total SDSC score (7% vs 1.9%, odds ratio (OR) 3.98, 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.17-7.27, p < 0.001) and in five subscores. Single-parent households and drug-resistant epilepsy showed significant positive associations with pathological sleep among children with motor disabilities. For TD peers, parental unemployment and parental nationality were positively associated with pathological sleep. CONCLUSION This population-based study robustly estimated the prevalence of sleep disorders in children with motor disabilities. Sleep disorders were significantly more frequent in children with motor disabilities, but at a lower frequency than previously reported.

Abstract
Sleep problems are a common and serious issue in children with life-limiting conditions (LLCs) and severe psychomotor impairment (SPMI). The “Sleep Questionnaire for Children with Severe Psychomotor Impairment” (Schlaffragebogen für Kinder mit Neurologischen und Anderen Komplexen Erkrankungen, SNAKE) was developed for this unique patient group. In a proxy rating, the SNAKE assesses five different dimensions of sleep(-associated) problems (disturbances going to sleep, disturbances remaining asleep, arousal and breathing disorders, daytime sleepiness, and daytime behavior disorders). It has been tested with respect to construct validity and some aspects of criterion validity. The present study examined whether the five SNAKE scales are consistent with parents’ or other caregivers’ global ratings of a child’s sleep quality. Data from a comprehensive dataset of children and adolescents with LLCs and SPMI were analyzed through correlation coefficients and Mann–Whitney U testing. The results confirmed the consistency of both sources of information. The highest levels of agreements with the global rating were achieved for disturbances in terms of going to sleep and disturbances with respect to remaining asleep. The results demonstrate that the scales and therefore the SNAKE itself is well-suited for gathering information on different sleep(-associated) problems in this vulnerable population.

Abstract
AIM Many children with severe developmental and epileptic encephalopathies experience significant sleep disturbance, causing major disruption to the family's quality of life. We aimed to determine the frequency and nature of sleep problems in individuals with Dravet syndrome. METHODS The Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children and a seizure questionnaire were distributed to the parents/guardians of 96 patients with Dravet syndrome. Sixteen patients had two nights of home oximetry. RESULTS Fifty-seven out of 96 questionnaires were completed. Forty-three out of 57 (75%) individuals had sleep problems. Twenty-five out of 57 (44%) individuals had an abnormal total sleep score, with difficulty initiating and maintaining sleep (22 out of 57, 39%), sleep-wake transition disorders (20 out of 57, 35%), and sleep breathing disorders (19 out of 57, 33%). Twenty-two out of 57 (39%) individuals took medication to assist sleep, predominantly melatonin (n=14). Thirty out of 57 (53%) recently had nocturnal seizures. Overnight oximetry showed 14 out of 16 (88%) had a higher oxygen desaturation index (>3%), and six out of 16 (38%) had higher mean pulse rates than normative values. Home oximetry was normal or inconclusive in all patients. INTERPRETATION Seventy-five per cent of individuals with Dravet syndrome had sleep problems, highlighting the importance of routinely assessing sleep and initiating appropriate behavioural and pharmacological interventions to improve the patient and family's quality of life. A high oxygen desaturation index and mean pulse rates on pulse oximetry may reflect unrecognized nocturnal seizures. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS More than 70% of patients with Dravet syndrome have sleep problems. Difficulty initiating and maintaining sleep was most common, particularly in those older than 20 years. Second most common were sleep-wake transition disorders, affecting more than 50% of those younger than 5 years. Sleep breathing disorders were a frequent problem across all age groups. Oximetry was not diagnostic of sleep-disordered breathing or obvious seizures.

Abstract
AIM To determine whether any parent and child report sleep measure tools have been validated in children aged 0-18 years with cerebral palsy (CP). METHOD A systematic search of five databases was performed up to June 2017. Studies were included if a sleep measure tool was used to evaluate sleep in children 0-18 years with CP based on international classifications of sleep. Sleep measures were assessed for psychometric data in children with CP. RESULTS Only one paper which used the Schlaffragebogen für Kinder mit Neurologischen und Anderen Komplexen Erkrankungen (SNAKE) questionnaire met the study criteria. The four other measures frequently used in children with CP had no psychometric data available for their use in children with CP. The SNAKE questionnaire has been validated only in children with CP in Gross Motor Function Classification System level V. The Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children and the Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire had the strongest psychometric properties in typically developing children, but has not yet been validated in children with CP. INTERPRETATION Current sleep measures being administered in typically developing children are also often used in children with CP, but have not been well validated in this group of children. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS There are no condition specific measures of sleep in children with cerebral palsy (CP). The Schlaffragebogen für Kinder mit Neurologischen und Anderen Komplexen Erkrankungen (SNAKE) questionnaire is validated for children with CP in Gross Motor Function Classification System level V. A framework to design a CP specific sleep questionnaire is provided.

Abstract
Objective To analyze the relationship between epilepsy, sleep disorders, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Bibliographic search A literature search of the PubMed database was performed using the following key words: epilepsy, sleep, and ADHD. In total, 91 articles were located in PubMed, 34 were selected for abstract reading and twelve articles were reviewed, in which the main objectives were examine the relationship between epilepsy, sleep and ADHD from several perspectives, including epidemiology, effect of comorbidities on academic performance and the factors leading to diagnostic difficulties among these three disorders Results Among the main findings, there were difficulties to start and maintain sleep in patients with epilepsy and ADHD, reduction in sleep efficiency, decreased seizure threshold, as well as behavioral and cognitive deficits in both groups. Conclusions It is important to know which symptom is the predominant one. For this reason, children and adolescents with epilepsy, ADHD and sleep disorders need to be assessed carefully before initiating treatment. Our review concluded that there is an important link in this pathological triad.
