Visiting the Operating Theatre Before Surgery Did Not Reduce the Anxiety in Children and Their Attendant Parent

The impact of digital storytelling for children during paediatric day surgery on anxiety and negative emotional behaviors: Randomized controlled trial

PURPOSE

The aim of the study was to examine the effectiveness of digital storytelling as a therapeutic care intervention in paediatric day surgery.

DESIGN AND METHODS

his study was conducted in a randomized controlled experimental design. Seventy-two voluntary children who were scheduled for day surgery and met the inclusion criteria for the study were included. Research data were collected using the Child's Descriptive Information Form, the Children's Emotional Manifestation Scale, and the State Anxiety Inventory for Children. The study group used digital storytelling to prepare for day surgery.

RESULTS

State anxiety scores decreased over time in the study group. The digital storytelling intervention was found to be effective in reducing anxiety scores. In the control group, state anxiety scores were highest on the day of the surgery. Children in the control group experienced higher levels of anxiety on the day of the surgery compared to those in the study group. The high anxiety levels in the control group continued at a higher level even two weeks after surgery. Children in the control group exhibited more negative emotional behaviors on the day of the surgery.

CONCLUSION

The digital storytelling intervention implemented in this research was found to be effective in reducing children's anxiety and negative emotional behaviors.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

Digital storytelling should be applied and adapted to various other areas of paediatric surgery. Its utilization is significant for nurses working in the field of day surgery.

Contribution of Treatment with Ear Popper for Hearing in Children with Middle Ear Effusion

OBJECTIVES

we aim to assess the contribution of the EarPopper device to hearing in children with middle ear effusion (MEE).

METHODS

The study has three parts, including 1. tympanometry and audiometry before and six weeks after using the EarPopper to evaluate the treatment's effect over time compared to a control group; 2. tympanometry before and immediately after using the EarPopper to evaluate immediate changes in middle ear pressure (MEP); 3. length of effect 90 min after use to assess pressure fluctuations over time.

RESULTS

Part 1 was a follow-up six weeks after using the device, and the patients in the study group that completed the study showed a significant improvement in hearing threshold. The average gain in hearing threshold ranged from 9.1 dB to 14 dB compared to the control group's max improvement of 1.1 dB. In addition, MEP was significantly improved in the study group, as most Type Bs improved to Type A and C. Part 2 was the tympanometry immediately after using EarPopper and showed the majority of Type Cs turned into Type As. The majority of Type Bs remained unchanged. Part 3 was a follow-up 90 min after use; Type Cs that had improved to Type A demonstrated a decrease in pressure and return to negative pressure.

CONCLUSIONS

use of the EarPopper device for six weeks is associated with an improved hearing threshold and middle ear status.

Effectiveness of a Mobile App Intervention for Preparing Preschool Children and Parents for Day Surgery: Randomized Controlled Trial

BACKGROUND

Day surgery allows families to return home quickly. Only a few approaches to preparing for day surgery have demonstrated how digital solutions can support families and children.

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a mobile app intervention on preschool children's fear and pain and parents' anxiety and stress in preparing children for day surgery.

METHODS

This study was conducted at the Pediatric Day Surgical Department of a university hospital in Finland between 2018 and 2020. Parents of children (aged 2-6 y) who were in a queue for elective day surgery were randomized into the intervention group (IG; n=36) and control group (CG; n=34). The CG received routine preparations, whereas the IG was prepared using a mobile app. Parents' and children's outcomes were measured using validated scales at 4 different points: at home (T1 and T4) and at the hospital (T2 and T3) before and after surgery. Group differences were analyzed using statistical methods suitable for the material.

RESULTS

Before surgery, parents in both groups experienced mild anxiety, which decreased after surgery. Parental anxiety did not differ between groups preoperatively (P=.78) or postoperatively (P=.63). Both groups had less anxiety at home after surgery compared with before. The IG showed a significant decrease (P=.003); the CG also improved (P=.002). Preoperatively at home, most parents in both groups experienced no stress or mild stress (P=.61). Preoperatively at the hospital, parents in both groups experienced mild stress; however, parents in the IG experienced more stress during this phase (P=.02). Parents in the IG experienced significantly less stress postoperatively than those in the CG (P=.05). Both groups showed decreased stress levels from before to after surgery (IG: P=.003; CG: P=.004) within each group. There were no significant differences in children's pain levels between the groups and measurement points. This was observed before surgery at home (P=.25), before surgery at the hospital (P=.98), and after surgery at the hospital (P=.72). Children's fear decreased more in the IG (P=.006) than in the CG (P=.44) comparing the phases before and after surgery at home. Fear did not differ between the IG and CG preoperatively at home (P=.20) or at the hospital (P=.59) or postoperatively at the hospital (P=.62) or at home (P=.81).

CONCLUSIONS

The mobile app intervention did not reduce anxiety or pain. However, it was observed that parents in the IG experienced substantially heightened stress levels before surgery at the hospital, which decreased significantly after surgery at home. In addition, fear levels in children in the IG decreased over time, whereas no significant change was observed in the CG. These results are important for developing health care service chains and providing families with innovative and customer-oriented preparation methods.

Effect of therapeutic play based training program on pre- and post-operative anxiety and fear: A study on circumcision surgery in Turkish Muslim children

INTRODUCTION

Developmentally appropriate pre-surgical educational programs can help alleviate the anxiety of both children and parents. As one of the most common pediatric surgical procedures is circumcision; and they may experience anxiety and fear before and after this surgical procedure, this study is considered to make an important contribution to the literature.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to examine the effect of therapeutic play based training program on pre- and post-operative anxiety and fear levels of children aged 8-11 years who would undergo circumcision.

STUDY DESIGN

This was a quasi-experimental study that consisted of a pre- and post-intervention and control groups; and concluded with 60 children aged 8-11 years (intervention group: 30 and no intervention/control group: 30). Child and Parent Information Form, Childhood Anxiety Sensitivity Index (CASI) and Fear for Medical Procedures Scale (FMPS) were used as data collection tools. Children in the intervention group applied a "therapeutic play-based training program" 2 h before they underwent circumcision surgery. Therapeutic toys used in the educational program has designed by researchers.

RESULTS

After the training program, children in the intervention group obtained lower CASI (preop t = 6.383, p < .001; postop t = 8.763, p < .001) and FMPS (preop t = 6.331, p < .001; postop t = 9.366, p < .001) total mean scores than those in the control group.

DISCUSSION

This study was concluded that the therapeutic play based training program used to prepare children for circumcision surgery was effective in reducing their pre- and post-operative anxiety and medical fears. Considering that male circumcision is a religious and cultural necessity in Turkey, further studies can also examine whether the anxiety and medical fear scores differ in study groups that include children who are not Muslim or live in a different country, and whether the training program will be effective in reducing their anxiety and medical fears.

CONCLUSIONS

A therapeutic play based training program can be used to prepare children for circumcision in the preoperative period.

Reducing preoperative anxiety in parents of surgical patients

Aims and objectives

To investigate preoperative anxiety in parents of paediatric surgical patients, testing whether the provision of information (using video and story books) regarding the surgical process can impact on reducing anxiety. Analyse if any personal factors influence the reduction of anxiety.

Background

Attending a surgical theatre generates anxiety, especially in the case of children. The effect of different preoperative intervention procedures in children that attempt to reduce their anxiety level have been studied a great deal. However, although their parents also suffer high levels of anxiety, potential intervention to reduce their levels has not received the same attention.

Study design

Randomised Clinical trial.

Methods

One hundred and twenty-five parents of children (8-12 y.o.) undergoing surgery in a public hospital were randomly assigned to the control group CG (34 individuals) or one of the 3 experimental groups EG (91). In this Randomised Controlled Study, children and parents of the experimental groups were provided with a story book, a video with additional information of nursing, or both. Prior to the surgical intervention, the State Anxiety, S-A, and Trait Anxiety, T-A, of the parents and children were measured using the STAI and STAIC questionnaires respectively. Data collection was carried out for 12 months starting in October 2016.

Results

Parents' S-A in the control group was higher than in the experimental groups. A linear model explains the parents' S-A using as regressors: children S-A, age and T-A of the parents, and children age.

Conclusions

Providing information about the surgical process (through stories or videos) to which a child is going to be subjected can reduce the anxiety of the parents.

Relevance to clinical practice

Given their close connection to the patient and the potential effects on the children of their psychological situation, healthcare professionals should consider paying greater attention to communicating with the parents.

The effect of a video-assisted operating room promotion program on the anxiety levels of parents and their children: A randomized controlled trial protocol

PURPOSE

Anxiety experienced by parents is an important predictor of anxiety experienced by children. Different interventions are used to reduce the anxiety levels of children and their parents during the preoperative period. Apart from conventional training methods, watching videos about real-life operating rooms can reduce parents' and their children's anxiety levels. Children scheduled for surgery are likely to experience less anxiety if their parents experience less anxiety. A video-assisted operating room promotion program will develop for parents. This study will be aimed to evaluate the effect of the program on the anxiety levels of parents and children.

DESIGN AND METHODS

This study protocol is a single-center, single-blind, pre-test, post-test, follow-up parallel group randomized controlled trial. This study protocol was prepared with the Standard Protocol Items: Recommendations for Interventional Trials guidelines and will adhere to the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials Non-Pharmacologic Treatment Interventions checklist. A total of 100 eligible participants will be randomized into intervention and control groups. The intervention group will attend the program and receive standard care.

CONCLUSION

If we obtain the expected results, we think that they will help healthcare professionals develop methods and strategies to reduce the anxiety levels of parents and children through content covering the pre-, peri-, and post-surgical processes.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

The results will assist healthcare professionals in the management of pain and guide them in developing technology-based nursing interventions. Trial registration It was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov in January 2022 (NCT05186766).

Will a preoperative theatre visit reduce anxiety? A randomised controlled trial

To assess the effect of preoperative theatre visit in reducing anxiety and its associated adverse outcomes, a single centre randomised controlled trial was conducted at the Professorial Gynaecology Unit, Colombo South Teaching Hospital, Sri Lanka. 64 patients were randomised. The intervention group had a pre-operative theatre visit with an informative session regarding the surgery. Patients' anxiety before, at the time and after the surgery was assessed using APAIS score. Pre-induction parameters and pain score were also assessed. APAIS anxiety difference before the surgery and on the day of the surgery was -1.937 (±4.641) and -1.781 (±2.586) for the intervention and the control groups respectively (p = 0.643). There was no significant difference in pre-induction parameters between the groups. Pain score at 6 hours after surgery was 5.04 (±2.510) for the intervention group and 6.08 (±2.888) for the control (p = 0.189). Preoperative theatre visit prior to surgery made no significant difference in the patient's anxiety, though a trend in reduction of anxiety and pain was noted.Impact statementWhat is already known on this subject? Patients experience significant anxiety before surgical procedures and high levels of anxiety can lead to adverse outcomes needing high induction doses of aneasthesia, delayed recovery and more postoperative pain. Different methods for preoperative anxiety reduction such as provision of systematic preoperative instructions, cognitive-behavioural interventions had been successful.What do the results of this study add? There are only a limited number of studies conducted assessing the methods of informational interventions to reduce anxiety. Preoperative theatre visit is a simple intervention that can be carried out without any additional preparation.What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? Our study could not show that preoperative theatre visit as an effective intervention in reducing anxiety in patients undergoing elective gynaecological surgery. However, there was a trend towards reduction in anxiety and postoperative pain with the intervention. Future research on providing additional information at the preoperative visit, timing of the visit and larger sample sizes may reveal better outcomes.

Effectiveness of interventions used to prepare preschool children and their parents for day surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials

BACKGROUND

To evaluate how effective preparatory interventions for paediatric day surgery are at reducing parents' anxiety and stress and children's pain and fear.

METHODS

A systematic review was conducted according to Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) guidelines and reported using the PRISMA 2020 checklist. PubMed, CINAHL (EBSCO), Scopus, Medic and Web of Science were screened for original research published up until December 2020, while Mednar and EBSCO Open Dissertations were used to identify any relevant grey literature. The methodological quality and risks of bias were evaluated according to JBI guidelines by two authors. The eligibility criteria were parents of a preschool (2- to 6-year-old) child going through day surgery with preparatory interventions, outcomes measured anxiety, stress (parent), fear and pain (child), and randomised controlled trial (RCT).

RESULTS

Two thousand and three hundred and fourteen RCTs were screened. Fifteen studies (including 1514 participants) were chosen for narrative synthesis of parental anxiety and stress and children's fear and pain. Nine studies underwent a meta-analysis of parental anxiety (n = 970). The interventions were categorised as functional, informative or a combination of both. Four interventions reduced parents' anxiety while two significantly alleviated children's postoperative pain. The interventions found to be effective combined various ways of providing information. The meta-analysis did reveal a statistically significant impact on parents' anxiety (SMD =0.22, 95% Cl [0.03, 0.41], z = 2.28, p = .023). None of the studies dealt with parental stress or fear in children.

CONCLUSIONS

The studied interventions used various preparatory approaches, some of which were effective at reducing parental anxiety. More RCT studies are needed to find the most effective methods for preparing parents and their children for day surgery.

RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE

Preparation for day surgery through appropriate interventions can reduce anxiety among parents and postoperative pain in children.

Nonpharmacological interventions used in the perioperative period to prevent anxiety in adolescents: a scoping review

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this scoping review was to examine and map the range of nonpharmacological interventions used in the perioperative period to prevent anxiety in adolescents.

INTRODUCTION

Undergoing surgery involves experiencing fears and uncertainties that lead to an increase in anxiety levels. The interventions used to prevent anxiety in the perioperative period in adolescents must be appropriate to their developmental stage.

INCLUSION CRITERIA

Studies involving adolescents (10 to 19 years of age) undergoing any type of surgical procedure and specifying any nonpharmacological interventions administered to prevent anxiety, implemented in the perioperative period, were included in this review.

METHODS

A comprehensive search strategy using multiple databases was employed to find relevant studies. The databases search included MEDLINE via PubMed; CINAHL Plus with Full Text via EBSCO; Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials; LILACS; Scopus; Library, Information Science and Technology Abstracts; PsycINFO; JBI Connect+; and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. Sources of unpublished studies and gray literature were TDX - Tesis Doctorals en Xarxa (Spain); RCAAP - Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal; OpenGrey - System for Information on Grey Literature in Europe; and MedNar. Studies published in English, Spanish, or Portuguese were included. There was no date restriction, or geographical or cultural limitation applied to the search. The relevant studies and their reported outcomes were organized and analyzed.

RESULTS

The database search yielded 1438 articles, and three additional records were added after hand searching. Title, abstract, and full-text review identified 11 papers that met the inclusion criteria. The final data set represented 947 participants. The data were analyzed according to the type of nonpharmacological intervention, population, concept (outcome measured and tool used), context (physical location; preoperative vs. postoperative), frequency and duration of the intervention, and which professional team member implemented the intervention. Eight nonpharmacological interventions were identified, applied either in the preoperative or postoperative context. The nurses were the main professionals administering the nonpharmacological interventions to the adolescents.

CONCLUSIONS

A variety of nonpharmacological interventions were used in the perioperative period to prevent anxiety in adolescents. The most common interventions were music/musicotherapy and hypnosis/guided imagery. However, other interventions such as therapeutic play, preoperative preparation program, mothers' presence during the anesthesia induction, distraction, relaxation training, massage therapy, and reading were also identified. These interventions were used alone or in a combination of two interventions, either preoperatively or postoperatively. The adolescents in the early stage (10 to 14 years) were the most studied group and the adolescents in the late stage (17 to 19 years) were the least studied. Future research should focus on the implementation of nonpharmacological interventions in the perioperative period involving adolescents, particularly late adolescents. A systematic review on the effect of nonpharmacological interventions for anxiety management in adolescents in the perioperative period should be conducted.

Play interventions for paediatric patients in hospital: a scoping review

OBJECTIVE

Play is a non-invasive, safe and inexpensive intervention that can help paediatric patients and their families manage difficult aspects of being ill or hospitalised. Although play has existed in hospitals for decades, research on hospital play interventions is scarce. This review aimed to categorise and synthesise the last 20 years of research on hospital play interventions.

DESIGN

Scoping review.

PubMed, CINAHL, CENTRAL, ERIC and PsycINFO (1 January 2000- 9 September 2020).

STUDY SELECTION AND DATA EXTRACTION

We systematically searched for original peer-reviewed articles, written in English, on hospital play interventions in paediatric patients (0-18 years) in non-psychiatric settings. Two reviewers independently screened titles and abstracts, reviewed full text of relevant articles and extracted data. We thematically synthesised the data from the included studies, and a descriptive analysis, based on a developed framework, is presented.

RESULTS

Of the 297 included articles, 78% came from high-income countries and 56% were published within the last 5 years. Play interventions were carried out across all ages by various healthcare professionals. Play interventions served different roles within four clinical contexts: A) procedures and diagnostic tests, B) patient education, C) treatment and recovery and D) adaptation. Across these contexts, play interventions were generally facilitated and purpose-oriented and had positive reported effects on pain, stress, and anxiety.

CONCLUSIONS

Play in hospitals is an emerging interdisciplinary research area with a significant potential benefit for child and family health. Future research should further describe principles for play in hospitals. High-quality studies investigating short-term and long-term effects are needed to guide when and how to best integrate play in hospitals.

Parental Experiences of the Pediatric Day Surgery Pathway and the Needs for a Digital Gaming Solution: Qualitative Study

BACKGROUND

The parents of hospitalized children are often dissatisfied with waiting times, fasting, discharge criteria, postoperative pain relief, and postoperative guidance. Parents' experiences help care providers to provide effective, family-centered care that responds to parents' needs throughout the day surgery pathway.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of our study was to describe parental experiences of the pediatric day surgery pathway and the needs for a digital gaming solution in order to facilitate the digitalization of these pathways.

METHODS

This was a descriptive qualitative study. The participants (N=31) were parents whose children were admitted to the hospital for the day surgical treatments or magnetic resonance imaging. The data were collected through an unstructured, open-ended questionnaire; an inductive content analysis was conducted to analyze the qualitative data. Reporting of the study findings adheres to the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ) checklist.

RESULTS

Parental experiences of the children's day surgery pathway included 3 main categories: (1) needs for parental guidance, (2) needs for support, and (3) child involved in his or her own pathway (eg, consideration of an individual child and preparation of child for treatment). The needs for a digital gaming solution were identified as 1 main category-the digital gaming solution for children and families to support care. This main category included 3 upper categories: (1) preparing children and families for the day surgery via the solution, (2) gamification in the solution, and (3) connecting people through the solution.

CONCLUSIONS

Parents need guidance and support for their children's day surgery care pathways. A digital gaming solution may be a relevant tool to support communication and to provide information on day surgeries. Families are ready for and are open to digital gaming solutions that provide support and guidance and engage children in the day surgery pathways.

Nurse-Led Randomized Controlled Trials in the Perioperative Setting: A Scoping Review

PURPOSE

Nurses provide care at each phase of the complex, perioperative pathway and are well placed to identify areas of care requiring investigation in randomized controlled trials. Yet, currently, the scope of nurse-led randomized controlled trials conducted within the perioperative setting are unknown. This scoping review aims to identify areas of perioperative care in which nurse-led randomized controlled trials have been conducted, to identify issues impacting upon the quality of these trials and identify gaps for future investigation.

METHODS

This scoping review was conducted in reference to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews. Searches were conducted in PubMed, Embase, Cumulative Index for Nursing and Allied Health Literature and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, with a date range of 2014-19. Sources of unpublished literature included Open Grey, and ProQuest Dissertation and Theses, Clinical Trials.gov and the Australian and New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry. After title and abstract checking, full-text retrieval and data extraction, studies were appraised using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklists for randomized controlled trials. Data were synthesized according to the main objectives. Key information was tabulated.

RESULTS

From the 86 included studies, key areas where nurses have led randomized controlled trials include patient or caregiver anxiety; postoperative pain relief; surgical site infection prevention: patient and caregiver knowledge; perioperative hypothermia prevention; postoperative nausea and vomiting; in addition to other diverse outcomes. Issues impacting upon quality (including poorly reported randomization), and gaps for future investigation (including a focus on vulnerable populations), are evident.

CONCLUSION

Nurse-led randomized controlled trials in the perioperative setting have focused on key areas of perioperative care. Yet, opportunities exist for nurses to lead experimental research in other perioperative priority areas and within different populations that have been neglected, such as in the population of older adults undergoing surgery.

Health specialists' views on the needs for developing a digital gaming solution for paediatric day surgery: A qualitative study

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

To describe the views on the needs of health specialists to consider when developing a digital gaming solution for children and families in a paediatric day surgery.

BACKGROUND

Children's day surgery treatment is often cancelled at the last minute for various reasons, for example due to the lack of information. Digital gaming solutions could help families to be better oriented to the coming treatment. Despite the increasing demands for mHealth systems, there is not enough evidence-based information from the health specialist perspective for developing a digital gaming solution.

DESIGN

A qualitative descriptive study was conducted.

METHODS

Health specialists (N = 15) including 11 nurses, one physiotherapist and four doctors from different areas from one university hospital in Finland were recruited using a snowball sampling method. Semi-structured, face-to-face interviews were conducted in March and April 2019. The data were analysed using inductive conduct analyses. The COREQ checklist was used to report the data collection, analysis and the results.

RESULTS

The data yielded 469 open codes, 21 sub-categories, three upper categories and one main category. The main category the digital gaming solution to support knowledge, care and guidance in children's day surgery included three upper categories: (a) support for preoperative information and guidance, (b) support for intra-operative information and care, and (c) support for postoperative information, care and guidance.

CONCLUSION

Digital gaming solutions could be used to help children and families to be better prepared for upcoming treatments, to support communication in different languages and to improve children's pain management after operations.

RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE

Evidence-based information is important to ensure that future digital solutions answer the real needs of the staff and patients. There is a need for families and children's views to be taken into consideration when developing digital gaming solutions in the hospital context.

Children's Perceptions of Pictures Intended to Measure Anxiety During Hospitalization

Many children experience anxiety during a hospital stay, which can have an adverse impact on their recovery and response to future hospital care. To facilitate assessment of anxiety in young children and children with communicative disabilities, the short S-STAI (short version of the State scale of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory), has previously been adapted to a visual format. The aims of the present study were (a) to validate the pictures used to represent emotions and the steps of a quantitative scale ('a lot' - 'some' - 'a little'), including to determine whether any of them should be replaced, and (b) to assess different pictures to be used for a qualitative scale ('good/like' - 'in between/so-so' -'bad/dislike') in the same instrument. A total of 103 children aged 5-8 years were asked to choose verbal labels for pictures of facial expressions intended to represent emotions, match those pictures with the emotional categories used in the short S-STAI (Tense/Nervous, Worried/Afraid, Calm/Relaxed, and Happy/Content) and indicate their preferences for pictures intended to represent the steps of a quantitative scale and a qualitative one. The children understood both scales and the differences between positive and negative emotions in the short S-STAI. The older children (aged 7 and 8) significantly more often chose a picture for each step of the scales that was intended to represent that particular step. The article discusses implications for the choice of pictures representing emotional states in the short S-STAI and presents recommended pictures.

Description of typical personality factors and events that lead to anxiety at induction of anesthesia in French children

BACKGROUND

Preventive strategies are available to reduce preoperative anxiety in children, the ideal time for implementing such strategies remains poorly determined.

AIMS

The aim of this study was to determine psychological factors and events involved in the development of preoperative anxiety in children.

METHODS

This study consisted of prospective evaluations of anxiety trait and state during the preoperative period. Attendance at a preanesthetic consultation is obligatory for all patients undergoing surgery in France. Anxiety trait and state assessments were quantified in mothers and children before and after the preanesthetic consultation using visual analog and faces numerical scales. Preoperative anxiety in children was assessed immediately before induction of anesthesia using an analog scale. Other data recorded included demographic and medical data and type of hospital stay. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used.

RESULTS

Overall 111 consecutive patients were included. The following factors emerged leading to anxiety state at induction of anesthesia: maternal anxiety state before the preanesthetic consultation, a feeling of not being reassured by the anesthesiologist, maternal anxiety state after the consultation, and anxiety trait in the child. Logistic regression found this combination of factors (OR = 4 [1.4 -12]) and inpatient stay (OR = 3 [1.4-7]), predicting anxiety with an accuracy of 69%.

CONCLUSION

The present study identified a combination of psychological factors and events associated with the development of anxiety at induction of anesthesia in children. Parental anxiety impacts upon children and occurs before the preanesthetic consultation. This result may assist clinicians to prescribe personalized preventive strategies against anxiety.
