Abstract
Neonicotinoid (NN) pesticides have been linked to increased brain dysfunction in mammals, such as anxiety-like behavior; this is thought to involve monoamines (MA), neurotransmitters that control behavior, memory, and learning. However, the mechanism by which NNs affect the central nervous system is not fully understood. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether MAs affect NNs-induced anxiety-like behavior. Mice were orally administered acetamiprid (ACE), an NN, at the no observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) of mouse (20 mg/kg body mass) set by the Food Safety Commission of Japan, and the elevated zero-maze (EZM) test was performed 30 min after administration. After behavioral analysis, levels of four MA (dopamine, 3-MT, serotonin, and histamine) in selected brain regions were determined by liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). In the exposed group, a trend toward increased anxiety-like behavior was observed, and at least one MA concentration was significantly increased in each region. Further, significant correlations were found between behavioral test results and hippocampal serotonin and striatal dopamine concentrations, as well as between dopamine and serotonin concentrations, in the exposed group. As anxiety can influence activity in the behavioral tests, the activity of neurons in the raphe nuclei (RN), a brain region greatly involved in anxiety via the serotonergic system, was examined by staining with anti-serotonin antibodies, and increased serotonergic activity was observed. Taken together, these results suggest that ACE regulates MA levels, notably serotonin levels in the hippocampus and that RN plays an important role in ACE-induced anxiety-like behavior.

Abstract
NEW FINDINGS What is the main question of this study? Is there an interaction between histamine and GABAergic system on modulation of anxiety in mice? What is the main finding and its importance? There is a synergistic anxiogenic effect between histamine and bicuculline in mice. This effect may be due to a direct or indirect effect of the histaminergic system on the GABAergic system. ABSTRACT There are documents that both histaminergic and GABAergic systems are participated in the neurobiology of anxiety behavior. In the current research, we investigated the effects of the histaminergic system and GABAA receptor agents on anxiety-related behaviors and their interaction using the elevated plus-maze (EPM) test in mice. Intraperitoneally (i.p.) administration of muscimol (0.12 and 0.25 mg/kg) increased the open arm time (OAT) (p < 0.001) without affecting the open arm entries (OAE) and locomotor activity, showing an anxiolytic effect. I.p. injection of bicuculline (0.5 and 1 mg/kg) decreased OAT (p < 0.001) but not OAE and locomotor activity, suggesting an anxiogenic behavior. Intracerebroventricularly (i.c.v.) microinjection of histamine (2.5 and 5 μg/mouse) declined OAT (p < 0.001) but not OAE and locomotor activity, indicating an anxiogenic response. Co-administration of histamine with GABAergic agents, muscimol (0.06 mg/kg; i.p.) and bicuculline (0.25 mg/kg; i.p.), decreased (p < 0.001) and increased (p < 0.05) the anxiogenic-like response of the effective dose (5 μg/mouse; i.c.v.) of histamine, respectively. In addition, co-treatment of effective doses of histamine (2.5 and 5 μg/mouse;i.c.v.) along with an effective dose of muscimol (0.12 mg/kg;i.p.) and not-effective dose of bicuculline (0.25 mg/kg; i.p.) significantly decreased OAT (p < 0.001), suggesting a likely interaction between the histaminergic and GABAergic systems on the regulation of anxiety. The results demonstrated a synergistic anxiogenic-like effect between histamine and bicuculline in mice. In conclusion, our results presented an interaction between the histaminergic and GABAergic systems on anxiolytic/anxiogenic-like behaviors in the EPM test. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract
Garnered literature points toward the role of the dorsal hippocampus (CA1) in ethanol withdrawal-induced responses, wherein a strong presence of the histaminergic system is also reported. Therefore, the present study investigated the effect of an enhanced CA1 histaminergic transmission on the expression of chronic ethanol withdrawal-induced despair in mice on the tail suspension test (TST). The results revealed that mice who were on an ethanol-fed diet (5.96%, v/v) for 8 days exhibited maximum immobility time on the TST, and decreased locomotion at 24 h post-ethanol withdrawal (10th day), indicating ethanol withdrawal-induced despair. Enhancement of CA1 histaminergic activity achieved by the treatment of intra-CA1 microinjection of histaminergic agents such as histamine (0.1, 10 μg/mouse, bilateral), the histamine precursor l-histidine (1, 10 μg/mouse, bilateral), the histamine neuronal releaser/H3 receptor antagonist thioperamide (2, 10 μg/mouse, bilateral), the histamine H1 receptor agonist FMPH (2, 6.5 μg/mouse, bilateral), or the H2 receptor agonist amthamine (0.1, 0.5 μg/mouse, bilateral) to ethanol-withdrawn mice, 10 min before the 24-h post-ethanol withdrawal time point, significantly alleviated the expression of ethanol withdrawal-induced despair in mice on the TST. On the other hand, only the pre-treatment of the histamine H1 receptor agonist FMPH (2, 6.5 μg/mouse, intra-CA1 bilateral) reversed the reduction in locomotor activity induced in ethanol-withdrawn mice, whereas other employed histaminergic agents were devoid of any effect on this behavior. Therefore, our findings indicate that an enhanced CA1 histaminergic transmission, probably via stimulation of CA1 postsynaptic histamine H1 or H2 receptor, could preclude the behavioral despair, while H1 stimulation affects motor deficit expressed after ethanol withdrawal.

Abstract
Anxiety disorders, which have a noticeable global prevalence and may be caused by many factors, include a spectrum of disorders that share features of excessive fear- and anxiety-related behavioral disturbances. Different brain areas and neurotransmitter systems have been under investigation for anxiety-related disorders. In this study, we investigated the possible interaction between the dopaminergic and nitric oxide (NO) neurotransmitter systems in the medial septal nucleus and their roles in anxiety-like behaviors using elevated plus-maze (EPM) test in male rats. Our results showed that: (i) both D1-and D2-like receptor agonists, SKF-38393 and quinpirole, augmented anxiety-like behaviors at their two highest applied doses in the EPM test; (ii) both D1-and D2-like receptor antagonists, SCH- 23390 and sulpiride, reduced anxiety-like behaviors at their two highest applied doses in the EPM test; (iii) L-Arginine, a NO precursor, increased anxiety-like behaviors, but L-NAME, a non-specific nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor, reduced them in the EPM test; (iv) L-NAME could not reverse the anxiety-like parameters produced by SKF-38393, but it significantly reduced the anxiety-like behaviors induced by quinpirole; (v) Neither SCH- 23390 nor sulpiride changed anxiety-related behaviors induced by L-Arginine. It can be concluded that both dopaminergic and nitric oxide systems in the medial septal nucleus are involved in modulating anxiety-like behaviors. While NO has an involvement in the exerted effects by the D2-like agonist, such effects were not observed at the applied range of the doses for D1-and D2-like antagonists.

Abstract
The present study investigated the plausible modulatory role of central histaminergic transmission on the expression of nicotine withdrawal induced anxiety and somatic behavior in mice. Abrupt cessation of chronic nicotine (2 mg/kg, i.p. × 3/day) treatment for 12 days to mice, expressed increased anxiety in light & dark test and total abstinence (somatic) score at 24 h post nicotine withdrawal time. The somatic signs includes a composite score of all behaviors such as grooming, rearing, jumping, body shakes, forelimb tremors, head shakes, abdominal constrictions, scratching, empty mouth chewing or teeth chattering, genital licking, tail licking. Mice exhibited higher expression to nicotine withdrawal induced anxiety in light & dark test at 24 h post-nicotine withdrawal time on pre-treatment centrally (i.c.v) with histaminergic agents like histamine (0.1, 50 μg/mouse), histamine H3 receptor inverse agonist, thioperamide (2, 10 μg/mouse), histamine H1 receptor agonist, FMPH (2, 6.5 μg/mouse) or H2 receptor agonist amthamine (0.1, 0.5 μg/mouse) or intraperitoneally (i.p.) with histamine precursor, l-histidine (250, 500 mg/kg) as compared to control nicotine withdrawn animals. Furthermore, mice pre-treated with all these histaminergic agents except histamine H1 receptor agonist, FMPH shows exacerbated expression to post-nicotine withdrawal induced total abstinence (somatic) score in mice. On the other hand, central injection of selective histamine H1 receptor antagonist, cetirizine (0.1 μg/mouse, i.c.v.) or H2 receptor antagonist, ranitidine (50 μg/mouse, i.c.v) to mice 10 min before 24 h post-nicotine withdrawal time completely alleviated the expression of nicotine withdrawal induced anxiety and somatic behavior. Thus, it can be contemplated that the blockade of central histamine H1 or H2 receptor during the nicotine withdrawal phase could be a novel approach to mitigate the nicotine withdrawal associated anxiety-like manifestations. Contribution of endogenous histamine via H1 or H2 receptor stimulation in the nicotine withdrawal induced anxiety and somatic behavior is proposed.

Abstract
Increasing evidence shows the close relationship between hippocampal glutamatergic and serotonergic systems through the modulation of behavioral responses. This study aimed to investigate the possible involvement of 5-HT4 receptors in the CA3 hippocampal region in anxiolytic-like effects induced by D-AP5 (a competitive antagonist of the glutamate NMDA [N-Methyl-D-aspartate] receptor). Male Wistar rats were placed in the elevated plus maze (EPM) apparatus that is used to assess anxiety-related behaviors, and the percentages of open arm time (%OAT) and open arm entries (%OAE) which are associated with anxiety-related behaviors were measured. The close arm entries (CAE) which is correlated with locomotor activity was also evaluated. The results showed that, intra-CA3 injection of D-AP5 (0.4 μg/rat), RS67333 (1.2 μg/rat; a 5-HT4 receptor agonist), and RS23597-190 (1.2 μg/rat; a 5-HT4 receptor antagonist) increased %OAT and %OAE, indicating the anxiolytic-like effect of these drugs. Also, only RS23597-190 (1.2 μg/rat) decreased CAE. Intra-CA3 injection of sub-threshold dose of RS67333 (0.012 μg/rat) or RS23597-190 (0.012 μg/rat), 5 min before the injection of D-AP5 (0.2 μg/rat) increased %OAT, indicating potentiating the anxiolytic-like effect of D-AP5. The isobolographic analyses also showed the additive or synergistic anxiolytic-like effect of intra-CA3 co-administration of D-AP5 with RS67333 or RS23597-190, respectively. In conclusion, CA3 5-HT4 receptors are involved in D-AP5-induced anxiolytic-like behaviors in rats.

Abstract
The central nervous system regulates and responds to endocrine signals, and this reciprocal relationship determines emotional processing and behavioural anxiety. Although the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis remains the best-characterised system for this relationship, other steroid and peptide hormones are increasingly recognised for their effects on anxiety-like behaviour and reward. The present review examines recent developments related to the role of a number of different hormones in anxiety, including pregnane neurosteroids, gut peptides, neuropeptides and hormonal signals derived from fatty acids. Findings from both basic and clinical studies suggest that these alternative systems may complement or occlude stress-induced changes in anxiety and anxiety-like behaviour. By broadening the scope of mechanisms for depression and anxiety, it may be possible to develop novel strategies to attenuate stress-related psychiatric conditions. The targets for these potential therapies, as discussed in this review, encompass multiple circuits and systems, including those outside of the HPA axis.

Abstract
The neurobiological underpinnings of anxiety are of paramount importance to the development of effective therapeutic treatments. To date, there is considerable pharmacological evidence suggesting that the suppression of hippocampal theta frequency is a robust and predictive assay of anxiolytic drug action. Recently, this idea has been challenged using histamine (2-(4-imidazolyl)ethanamine), an endogenous neurotransmitter involved in a number of brain and behavioral functions. Here, we systematically evaluate the effects of dorsal and ventral hippocampal histamine infusions on evoked theta frequency and behavioral anxiety. Given the complex pharmacological profile of histamine and its receptors in the hippocampus, we reasoned that local intra-hippocampal infusions would be a powerful test of the theta suppression model. While dorsal hippocampal infusions of histamine produced neither significant changes in anxious-like behavior in the elevated plus maze nor changes of evoked theta, ventral infusions of histamine produced potent behavioral anxiolysis which corresponded to an increase, and not a decrease, in evoked theta frequency. As a positive neurophysiological control, we demonstrated that diazepam, a proven anxiolytic drug, decreased the frequency of hippocampal theta following both dorsal and ventral hippocampal infusions. Our results further challenge the hippocampal theta frequency suppression model as a measure of anxiolytic drug action. This article is part of the Special Issue entitled 'Histamine Receptors'.

Abstract
Several findings have pointed to the role of histaminergic neurotransmission in the modulation of anxiety-like behaviors and emotional memory. The elevated plus-maze (EPM) test has been widely used to investigate the process of anxiety and also has been used to investigate the process of learning and memory. Visual cues are relevant to the formation of spatial maps, and as the hippocampus is involved in this task, experiment 1 explored this issue. Experiment 2 investigated the effects of intraperitoneal (i.p.) injections of l-histidine (LH, a precursor of histamine) and of intra-dorsal hippocampus (intra-DH) injections of chlorpheniramine (CPA, an H1 receptor antagonist) on anxiety and emotional memory in mice re-exposed to the EPM. Mice received saline (SAL) or LH i.p. and SAL or CPA (0.016, 0.052, and 0.16 nmol/0.1 μl) intra-DH prior to Trial 1 (T1) and Trial 2 (T2). No significant changes were observed in the number of enclosed-arm entries (EAE) in T1, an EPM index of general exploratory activity. LH had an anxiolytic-like effect that was reversed by intra-DH injections of CPA. T2 versus T1 analysis revealed that only the lower dose of CPA resulted in impaired emotional memory. Combined injections of LH and CPA revealed that higher doses of CPA impair emotional memory. Taken together, these results suggest that LH and H1 receptors present in the dorsal hippocampus are involved in anxiety-related behaviors and emotional memory in mice submitted to EPM.

Abstract
Anxiety-related behaviors increase histamine and dopamine release in the brain. On the other hand, central histamine counteracts reward and reinforcement processes mediated by the mesolimbic dopamine system. We investigated the effects of the histaminergic system and dopamine D2 receptors agents and their interactions on anxiety-related behaviors using the elevated plus-maze (EPM). The intra-hippocampal (Intra-CA1) microinjection of histamine (10 μg/mouse) decreased the percentage of open arm time (%OAT) and open arm entries (%OAE) but not the locomotor activity, indicating an anxiogenic-like response. Quinpirole (0.5 and 2 μg/mouse) or sulpiride (0.3 and 1 μg/mouse) when injected into the dorsal hippocampus also induced anxiety-like behavior, however, the drugs reversed the anxiogenic response induced by the effective dose of histamine (10 μg/mouse). Taken together and under the present experimental design, our results indicate that activation of the dorsal hippocampal histaminergic receptors causes anxiety-like behaviors altered by dopamine D2 receptor agonist and antagonist. Histamine can decrease dopaminergic tone in the dorsal hippocampus through decreasing the endogenous dopamine release, whereas quinpirole does the same via the postsynaptic DA receptors' activation. Sulpiride however renders the same effect through autoreceptors' blockade and potentiated dopamine transmission. Thus, quinpirole and sulpiride seem to compensate the effects of the intra-CA1 injection of exogenous histamine, and tend to exert anxiolytic effects in the presence of histamine.

Abstract
The biogenic amine histamine is an important neurotransmitter in the central nervous system that has been implicated in learning and memory processes. Experimental evidence indicates that the role of the cerebellum may be more complex than the simple regulation of motor responses, and recent studies have demonstrated significant involvement of the cerebellum in emotional memory consolidation. This study investigated the effect of histamine microinjected into the cerebellar vermis on emotional memory consolidation in mice in the elevated plus-maze (EPM). The cerebellar vermis of male mice (Swiss Albino) were implanted with guide cannulae. The mice weighed between 25 and 30 g. After three days of recovery, behavioral tests in the EPM were performed on two consecutive days; the testing periods were called, Trial 1 and Trial 2. Immediately after Trial 1, the animals received microinjections of histamine in the cerebellar vermis (0.54, 1.36, 2.72, and 4.07 nmol/0.1 μl). On both days, the test sessions were recorded to enable analysis of behavioral measures. The decrease in open arm exploration (% entries and % time spent in the open arms) in Trial 2 relative to Trial 1 was used as a measure of learning and memory. The data were analyzed using One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Duncan's tests. The percentage of open arm entries (%OAE) and the percentage of time spent in the open arms (%OAT) were reduced in Trial 2 relative to Trial 1 for the control group; the same was true for the group that was microinjected with histamine at doses of 0.54 (%OAE and %OAT) and 1.36 nmol (%OAT). However, when the animals received histamine at doses of 2.72 and 4.07 nmol, their open arm exploration did not decrease. No significant changes were observed in the number of enclosed arm entries (EAE), an EPM index of general exploratory activity. These results suggest that there is a dose-dependent inhibitory effect of histamine microinjected into the cerebellar vermis on emotional memory consolidation.

Abstract
This study investigated the role of H(1) receptor in the state-dependent memory deficit induced by l-histidine (LH) in mice using Trial 1/2 protocol in the elevated plus-maze (EPM). The test was performed for two consecutive days: Trial 1 (T1) and Trial 2 (T2). Before both trials, mice received a combined injection i.p. of saline+saline (SAL/SAL), 500 mg/kg L-histidine+saline (LH/SAL), 500 mg/kg L-histidine+16 mg/kg chlorpheniramine (LH/CPA) or saline+16 mg/kg chlorpheniramine (SAL/CPA). The trials were performed in the EPM 10 min after the last injection. Each animal was placed in the center of the maze facing the open arm and had five minutes to explore it. On both days, test sessions were videotaped. The behavioral measures were scored from videotape. Data were analyzed based on Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and the Fisher's LSD test. The data showed no effects on anxiety since there was no difference between the SAL/SAL and the other groups in Trial 1, respectively, open arm entries (OAE), open arm time (OAT) and their percentages (%OAE and %OAT). During Trial 2, OAE, OAT, %OAE and %OAT were reduced in mice treated with SAL/SAL, LH/CPA and SAL/CPA, while the group LH/SAL did not show any difference in these measures. No significant changes were observed in enclosed arm entries (EAE), an EPM index of general exploratory activity. Thus, it can be suggested that LH induces emotional memory deficit and the treatment with chlorpheniramine was able to revert this effect, suggesting this action of LH was mediated by the H(1) receptor.

Abstract
In the present study, the influence of withdrawal from repeated administration of morphine on intra-ventral hippocampal microinjection of histamine-induced anxiety-like behavior was investigated in male Wistar rats. Three days subcutaneous administration of morphine (5-10 mg/kg) followed by five days free of the drug decreased the percentage open arm time and the percentage open arm entries. Intra-ventral hippocampal administration of histamine (2.5-7.5 microg/rat) decreased percentage open arm time and percentage open arm entries. Intra-ventral hippocampal histamine-induced anxiogenic effect was reversed in animals that had previously received the three days morphine (7.5 mg/kg) followed by five days free of the drug. Intra-ventral hippocampal administration of pyrilamine (5-20 microg/rat) or ranitidine (10-40 microg/rat) decreased percentage open arm time and percentage open arm entries. Pyrilamine- or ranitidine-induced anxiogenic effect was not changed in animals that had previously received the three days morphine (7.5 mg/kg) followed by five days free of the drug. Intra-ventral hippocampal injections of clobenpropit increased percentage open arm time. The percentage open arm time and percentage open arm entries were decreased in the morphine-treated animals compared with non-morphine-treated controls. Percentage open arm entries and locomotor activity was reduced with some doses of clobenpropit. It can be concluded that the histamine system is involved in anxiety-like behavior, and repeated injections of morphine followed by five days free of the drugs interact with histamine receptor mechanism.

Abstract
The central histaminergic system is reported to mediate behavioural, hormonal and physiological homeostasis of living organisms. Recent reports indicate its prominent role in various neurobehavioural disorders such as depression and psychosis. This study evaluated the effect of activation of the central histaminergic system in anxiety-like conditions, using the elevated plus-maze test in mice, and elucidated the role of different histaminergic receptors mediating such effects. Peripheral administration of L-histidine (L-His), in a dose-dependent manner, significantly decreased the exploration time in open arms and number of entries into open arms without modifying the number of entries into closed arms of the elevated plus-maze, indicating anxiogenesis. Further, such effects of central histamine were significantly attenuated, in a dose-dependent manner, by pretreatment with pyrilamine (H1 receptor antagonist). Pretreatment with either zolantidine (H2 receptor antagonist) or thioperamide (H3 receptor antagonist), however, failed to attenuate the L-His-induced anxiogenesis. Our results indicate that anxiogenic effects of central histaminergic system appear to be mediated prominently by activation of H1 receptors.
