Exogenous melatonin administration affects self-grooming and conspecific odor preferences in long-photoperiod meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus)

Impact of external odor on self-grooming of lesser flat-headed bats, Tylonycteris pachypus

Grooming is a common behavior of some mammals. Previous studies have shown that grooming is a means by which animals clean themselves, remove ectoparasites, and lower their body temperature. It is also involved in olfactory communication. Bats belong to the order Chiroptera and, like most mammals, are the natural host of many ectoparasites. Bat grooming, including licking and scratching, is one of the ways to reduce the adverse effects caused by ectoparasites. Bat grooming may also be induced by exogenous odor. In this study, we used lesser flat-headed bats (Tylonycteris pachypus) to test the hypothesis that exogenous odor affects the self-grooming behavior of bats. Results showed that external odor from distantly related species caused lesser flat-headed bats to spend more time in self-grooming. Lesser flat-headed bats that received odor from humans spent the longest time in self-grooming, followed by those that received odor from a different species of bats (T. robustula). Lesser flat-headed bats that received odor form the same species of bats, either from the same or a different colony, spent the least amount of time in self-grooming. These results suggest that bats can recognize conspecific and heterospecific through body scent.

Why do members of some species live in groups while others are solitary? Group living (sociality) has often been studied from an evolutionary perspective, but less is known about the neurobiology of affiliation outside the realms of mating and parenting. Colonial species offer a valuable opportunity to study nonsexual affiliative behavior between adult peers. Meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) display environmentally induced variation in social behavior, maintaining exclusive territories in summer months, but living in social groups in winter. Research on peer relationships in female meadow voles demonstrates that these selective preferences are mediated differently than mate relationships in socially monogamous prairie voles, but are also impacted by oxytocin and HPA axis signaling. This review addresses day-length dependent variation in physiology and behavior, and presents the current understanding of the mechanisms supporting selective social relationships in meadow voles, with connections to lessons from other species.

Synergistic interaction between diene valepotriates from V aleriana glechomifolia Meyer (Valerianaceae) and classical antidepressants: an isobolographic analysis

Objectives

Combinations of different classes of antidepressants (including herbal adjuvants) have been used as an alternative means of achieving better results in the treatment of depressed patients. However, studies characterizing the interactions between herbal adjuvants and antidepressants are lacking. This study is the first to investigate the interaction between diene valepotriates (VAL) from Valeriana glechomifolia, a species with antidepressant-like effects, and imipramine (IMI), desipramine (DESI) and bupropion (BUP). The interactions were assessed via isobolographic analyses, which represent a tool for evaluating interactions between drugs.

Methods

The interaction between VAL and each antidepressant was evaluated in mice given concurrent oral administration of each drug with fixed ED50 ratios and subjected to a forced swimming test (FST). Spontaneous locomotion was measured in the open field test.

Key findings

The drug combinations produced a dose-dependent anti-immobility effect in the FST without altering mouse locomotor activity. Isobolographic analysis revealed that VAL resulted in synergistic interactions in combination with each of the antidepressants tested.

Conclusion

The synergistic interactions between VAL and IMI, DESI and BUP highlight the potential for VAL to serve as adjuvants to antidepressant drugs and suggest that VAL does not directly target the same sites on neuronal transporters as the antidepressants.

Self-grooming induced by sexual chemical signals in male root voles (Microtus oeconomus Pallas)

Sniffing is one-way animals collect chemical signals, and many males self-groom when they encounter the odor of opposite-sex conspecifics. We tested the hypothesis that sexual chemical signals from females can induce self-grooming behavior in male root voles (Microtus oeconomus Pallas). Specifically, we investigated the sniffing pattern of male root voles in response to odors from the head, trunk, and tail areas of lactating and non-lactating females. The self-grooming behavior of males in response to female individual odorant stimuli was documented, and the relationship between self-grooming and sniffing of odors from the head, trunk, and tails areas were analyzed. Sniffing pattern results showed that males are most interested in odors from the head area, and more interested in odors from the tail as compared to the trunk area. Males displayed different sniffing and self-grooming behaviors when they were exposed to odors from lactating females as compared to non-lactating females. Males also spent more time sniffing and engaged in more sniffing behaviors in response to odors from the lactating females' tail area as compared to the same odors from non-lactating females. Similarly, males spent more time self-grooming and engaged in more self-grooming behaviors in the presence of individual odors from lactating females as compared to individual odors from non-lactating females. Partial correlation analyses revealed that the frequency of self-grooming was significantly correlated with the frequency of tail area sniffs. Results from this experiment suggest that sexual attractiveness of lactating females is stronger than that of non-lactating females. Furthermore, the partial correlation analysis demonstrated that self-grooming in males is induced by odors from the tail area of females. Collectively, these results support the hypothesis that sexual chemical signals from females can induce self-grooming behavior in male root voles. Self-grooming may also reflect the groomer's sexual motivation and facilitate sexual interactions.
