Abstract
Tannic acid (TA)-derived carbon dots (TACDs) were synthesized for the first time via a solvothermal method using TA as one of the raw materials, which may effectively inhibit amyloid fibril aggregation and disaggregate mature fibril. The fluorescent property of TACDs were modulated by adjusting the ratio of TA to o-phenylenediamine (oPD), and TACDs fabricated with the precursor ratio as 1:1 showed the best fluorescent property. Circular dichroism spectra (CD) showed that the structure of β-sheet decreased as the concentration of TACDs increased. The inhibition efficiency, as confirmed by thioflavin T (ThT) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), is extraordinary at 98.16%, whereas disaggregation efficiency is noteworthy at 97.97%, and the disaggregated lysozyme fibrils did not reaggregate after 7 days. More critically, TACDs can also alleviate the cellular toxicity caused by Aβ fibrils and improve cell viability. This work offers a new perspective on the design of scavengers for amyloid plaques.

Abstract
Neurodegenerative disorders are characterized by mitochondrial dysfunction and subsequently oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis that contribute to neuronal cytotoxicity and degeneration. Huntington's (HD), Alzheimer's (AD), and Parkinson's (PD) diseases are three of the major neurodegenerative diseases. To date, researchers have found various natural phytochemicals that could potentially be used to treat neurodegenerative diseases. Particularly, the application of natural phenolic compounds has gained significant traction in recent years, driven by their various biological activities and therapeutic efficacy in human health. Polyphenols, by modulating different cellular functions, play an important role in neuroprotection and can neutralize the effects of oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis in animal models. This review focuses on the current state of knowledge on phenolic compounds, including phenolic acids, flavonoids, stilbenes, and coumarins, as well as their beneficial effects on human health. We further provide an overview of the therapeutic potential and mechanisms of action of natural dietary phenolics in curing neurodegenerative diseases in animal models.

Abstract
Tea, the major beverage worldwide, is one of the oldest commercial commodities traded from ancient times. Apart from many of its advantages, including health, socio-economic, climatic, and agro-ecological values, FAO has recognized that the tea value chain covering its growth in the field, processing and marketing, and finally, the hot cup at the user's hand needs to be made sustainable during all these stages. Tea generates a lot of waste in different forms in different stages of its growth and processing, and these wastes, if not managed properly, may cause environmental pollution. A planned utilization of these wastes as feedstocks for various processes can generate more income, create rural livelihood opportunities, help grow tea environmentally sustainable, avoid GHG emissions, and make a real contribution to SDGs. Thermochemical and biological conversion of tea wastes generates value-added products. This review provides an overview on the impacts of the tea wastes on the environment, tea waste valorization processes, and applications of value-added products. The application of value-added products for energy generation, wastewater treatment, soil conditioners, adsorbents, biofertilizers, food additives, dietary supplements, animal feed bioactive chemicals, dye, colourant, and phytochemicals has been reviewed. Further, the challenges in sustainable utilization of tea wastes and opportunities for commercial exploitation of value-added products from tea wastes have been reviewed.

Abstract
Neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric diseases are increasingly affecting individuals' quality of life, thus increasing their cost to social and health systems. These diseases have overlapping mechanisms, such as oxidative stress, protein aggregation, neuroinflammation, neurotransmission impairment, mitochondrial dysfunction, and excitotoxicity. Currently, there is no cure for neurodegenerative diseases, and the available therapies have adverse effects and low efficacy. For neuropsychiatric disorders, such as depression, the current therapies are not adequate to one-third of the patients, the so-called treatment-resistant patients. So, searching for new treatments is fundamental. Medicinal plants appear as a strong alternative and complement towards new treatment protocols, as they have been used for health purposes for thousands of years. Thus, the main goal of this review is to revisit the neuroprotective potential of some of the most predominant medicinal plants (and one fungus) used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), focusing on their proven mechanisms of action and their chemical compositions, to give clues on how they can be useful against neurodegeneration progression.

Abstract
Aggregation of α-synuclein into toxic oligomeric structures has been implicated in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease via several key stages of fibrillation, oligomerization, and aggregation. Disaggregation or prevention of aggregation has garnered a lot of attention as a therapeutic strategy to prevent or delay the progression of Parkinson's disease. It has been recently established that certain polyphenolic compounds and catechins present in plants and tea extracts exhibit the potential to inhibit the α-synuclein aggregation. However, their copious supply for therapeutic development is still unsolved. Herein, we report for the first time the disaggregation potential of α-synuclein by an endophytic fungus residing in tea leaves (Camellia sinensis). Briefly, a recombinant yeast expressing α-synuclein was used for pre-screening of 53 endophytic fungi isolated from tea using anti-oxidant activity as a marker for the disaggregation of the protein. One isolate #59CSLEAS exhibited 92.4% reduction in production of the superoxide ions, which were similar to the already established α-synuclein disaggregator, Piceatannol exhibiting 92.8% reduction. Thioflavin T assay further established that #59CSLEAS decreased the oligomerization of α-synuclein by 1.63-fold. Subsequently Dichloro-dihydro-fluorescein diacetate-based fluorescence assay exhibited a reduction in total oxidative stress in the recombinant yeast in the presence of fungal extract, thereby indicating the prevention of oligomerization. Oligomer disaggregation potential of the selected fungal extract was found to be 56.5% as assessed by sandwich ELISA assay. Using morphological as well as molecular methods, the endophytic isolate #59CSLEAS was identified as Fusarium sp. The sequence was submitted in the Genbank with accession number ON226971.1.

Abstract
The prevalence, incidence and mortality rates of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease are gradually increasing. New approaches are being developed to manage the progression and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Catechins, polyphenolic compounds, are key compounds that demonstrate therapeutic effects with their properties such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic properties in the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. The therapeutic effects of catechins have been exhaustively studied in human and animal models. Catechins can have anti-inflammatory effects by suppressing inflammatory pathways and cytokines, as well as antioxidant effects such as chelating metal ions and scavenging radicals. They might reduce phosphorylation of tau proteins, aggregation of amyloid-beta and apoptotic proteins release. They can also decrease alpha-synuclein accumulation and increase dopamine levels. With all these effects, they can have an effect on neurodegenerative diseases. This review points to the potential mechanisms of catechins in neurodegenerative diseases, based on their findings in the literature review.Key teaching pointsCatechins can reduce amyloid-β plaque aggregation and tau phosphorylation.Catechins can decrease alfa-synuclein levels.Catechins can protect neuronal cells with their anti-apoptotic effect.More comprehensive studies are needed to clarify this issue.

Abstract
Neurodegeneration is the progressive loss of structure or function of neurons, which may ultimately involve cell death. The most common neurodegenerative disorder in the brain happens with Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most common cause of dementia. It ultimately leads to neuronal death, thereby impairing the normal functionality of the central or peripheral nervous system. The onset and prevalence of AD involve heterogeneous etiology, either in terms of genetic predisposition, neurometabolomic malfunctioning, or lifestyle. The worldwide relevancies are estimated to be over 45 million people. The rapid increase in AD has led to a concomitant increase in the research work directed towards discovering a lucrative cure for AD. The neuropathology of AD comprises the deficiency in the availability of neurotransmitters and important neurotrophic factors in the brain, extracellular betaamyloid plaque depositions, and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles of hyperphosphorylated tau protein. Current pharmaceutical interventions utilizing synthetic drugs have manifested resistance and toxicity problems. This has led to the quest for new pharmacotherapeutic candidates naturally prevalent in phytochemicals. This review aims to provide an elaborative description of promising Phyto component entities having activities against various potential AD targets. Therefore, naturopathy may combine with synthetic chemotherapeutics to longer the survival of the patients.

Abstract
Green fabrication of unique structural nanoparticles has always been of increasing interest in many fields. Herein, a facile and green strategy of fabricating catkin-like CuAg nanocomposites using tea-polyphenols as reduction agent is reported. As-prepared nanocomposites have been characterized by a series of analysis. Physical characterizations show the synthesised of nanocomposites whose catkin-like special morphology. The electrochemical detection hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) results show that, catkin-like CuAg nanocomposites have good sensitivity, stability and anti-interference and it could detect without any additional mediator or enzyme. Specifically, it shows good H2O2 sensitivity of 2.55 μA mM-1cm-2 with range of 0.1-120 mM. Therefore, the catkin-like CuAg nanocomposites prepared by an environmental-friendly synthetic strategy, would provide a good reference for other green syntheses in the future.

Abstract
Potential health benefits of tea has attracted significant scientific and public attention worldwide. Tea polyphenols are considered as natural promising complementary therapeutical agents for neurodegenerative diseases. However, the anti-neurodegeneration or anti-aging activities of oolong tea polyphenols have not been investigated. The current study aims to document beneficial effects of oolong tea polyphenols [dimers of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), oolonghomobisflavan A (OFA), and oolonghomobisflavan B (OFB)] with neuroprotective and neuritogenesis properties in cultured neuronal (Neuro-2a and HT22) cells and Caenorhabditis elegans models. In vitro, we found that the compounds (EGCG, OFA, and OFB) protect against glutamate-induced neurotoxicity via scavenging radical activity, suppression intracellular ROS and up-regulation of antioxidant enzymes. Moreover, the compounds induce neurite outgrowth via up-regulate Ten-4 gene expression. Interestingly, OFA and OFB exert stronger neuroprotective and neurite outgrowth properties than EGCG known as an excellent antioxidant agent in tea. In vivo, we found that the compounds protect against C. elegans Aβ-induced paralysis, chemotaxis deficiency and α-synuclein aggregation. Moreover, the compounds are capable of extending the lifespan of C. elegans. OFA and OFB possess both anti-neurodegeneration and anti-aging activities, supporting its therapeutic potential for the treatment of age-related neurodegenerative diseases which need to be studied in more detail in intervention studies.

Abstract
The focus on managing Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is shifting towards prevention through lifestyle modification instead of treatments since the currently available treatment options are only capable of providing symptomatic relief marginally and result in various side effects. Numerous studies have reported that the intake of fermented foods resulted in the successful management of AD. Food fermentation is a biochemical process where the microorganisms metabolize the constituents of raw food materials, giving vastly different organoleptic properties and additional nutritional value, and improved biosafety effects in the final products. The consumption of fermented foods is associated with a wide array of nutraceutical benefits, including anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, anti-apoptotic, anti-cancer, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, immunomodulatory, and hypocholesterolemic properties. Due to their promising health benefits, fermented food products have a great prospect for commercialization in the food industry. This paper reviews the memory and cognitive enhancement and neuroprotective potential of fermented food products on AD, the recently commercialized fermented food products in the health and food industries, and their limitations. The literature reviewed here demonstrates a growing demand for fermented food products as alternative therapeutic options for the prevention and management of AD.

Abstract
Neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and Huntington's disease (HD), are characterized by the progressive degeneration of neurons. Although the etiology and pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases have been studied intensively, the mechanism is still in its infancy. In general, most neurodegenerative diseases share common molecular mechanisms, and multiple risks interact and promote the pathologic process of neurogenerative diseases. At present, most of the approved drugs only alleviate the clinical symptoms but fail to cure neurodegenerative diseases. Numerous studies indicate that dietary plant polyphenols are safe and exhibit potent neuroprotective effects in various neurodegenerative diseases. However, low bioavailability is the biggest obstacle for polyphenol that largely limits its adoption from evidence into clinical practice. In this review, we summarized the widely recognized mechanisms associated with neurodegenerative diseases, such as misfolded proteins, mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative damage, and neuroinflammatory responses. In addition, we summarized the research advances about the neuroprotective effect of the most widely reported dietary plant polyphenols. Moreover, we discussed the current clinical study and application of polyphenols and the factors that result in low bioavailability, such as poor stability and low permeability across the blood-brain barrier (BBB). In the future, the improvement of absorption and stability, modification of structure and formulation, and the combination therapy will provide more opportunities from the laboratory into the clinic for polyphenols. Lastly, we hope that the present review will encourage further researches on natural dietary polyphenols in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract
In recent times, the status of some fermented foods which are considered as functional foods that confer health benefits in certain disease conditions has grown rapidly. The health benefits of fermented foods are due to the presence of probiotic microbes and the bioactive compound formed during fermentation. Microbes involved and metabolites produced by them are highly species-specific and contribute to the authenticity of the fermented foods. Several studies pertaining to the effect of fermented foods on various disease conditions have been conducted in recent years using both animal models and clinical trials on humans. This review focuses on the impact of fermented foods on conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular disease (CVD), obesity, gastrointestinal disorder, cancer and neurodegenerative disorders.

Abstract
The accumulation of protein aggregates in human tissues is a hallmark of more than 40 diseases called amyloidoses. In seven of these disorders, the aggregation is associated with neurodegenerative processes in the central nervous system such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), and Huntington’s disease (HD). The aggregation occurs when certain soluble proteins lose their physiological function and become toxic amyloid species. The amyloid assembly consists of protein filament interactions, which can form fibrillar structures rich in β-sheets. Despite the frequent incidence of these diseases among the elderly, the available treatments are limited and at best palliative, and new therapeutic approaches are needed. Among the many natural compounds that have been evaluated for their ability to prevent or delay the amyloidogenic process is epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), an abundant and potent polyphenolic molecule present in green tea that has extensive biological activity. There is evidence for EGCG’s ability to inhibit the aggregation of α-synuclein, amyloid-β, and huntingtin proteins, respectively associated with PD, AD, and HD. It prevents fibrillogenesis (in vitro and in vivo), reduces amyloid cytotoxicity, and remodels fibrils to form non-toxic amorphous species that lack seed propagation. Although it is an antioxidant, EGCG in an oxidized state can promote fibrils’ remodeling through formation of Schiff bases and crosslinking the fibrils. Moreover, microparticles to drug delivery were synthesized from oxidized EGCG and loaded with a second anti-amyloidogenic molecule, obtaining a synergistic therapeutic effect. Here, we describe several pre-clinical and clinical studies involving EGCG and neurodegenerative diseases and their related mechanisms.

Abstract
Aging and lipid metabolism disorders promote the formation and accumulation of amyloid with β-sheet structure, closely related to cardiovascular disease, senile dementia, type 2 diabetes, and other senile degenerative diseases. In this study, five representative teas were selected from each of the six types of tea, and a total of 30 teas were selected to evaluate the inhibitory activities on the formation of aging-related amyloid in vitro. The results showed that the 30 teas had a significant inhibitory effect on the formation activity on aging-related amyloid at the protein level in vitro. Although the content of catechins is relatively low, black tea and dark tea still have significant antioxidant activity and inhibit the formation of amyloid. A high-fat diet established the model of lipid metabolism disorder in premature aging SAMP8 mice, and these mice were gavaged different tea water extracts. The results showed that different tea types have a significant inhibitory effect on the formation of β-amyloid and Aβ42 mediated by age-related lipid metabolism disorders, and the in vivo activity of fully fermented teas was better than that of green tea. The action mechanism was related to antioxidation, anti-inflammatory, and improving lipid metabolism.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD), a type of dementia, severely distresses different brain regions. Characterized by various neuropathologies, it interferes with cognitive functions and neuropsychiatrical controls. This progressive deterioration has negative impacts not only on an individual's daily activity but also on social and occupational life. The pharmacological approach has always remained in the limelight for the treatment of AD. However, this approach is condemned with several side effects. Henceforth, a change in treatment approach has become crucial. Plant-based natural products are garnering special attention due to lesser side effects associated with their use. The current review emphasizes the anti-AD properties of phytoconstituents, throws light on those under clinical trials, and compiles information on their specific mode of actions against AD-related different neuropathologies. The phytoconstituents alone or in combinations will surely help discover new potent drugs for the effective treatment of AD with lesser side effects than the currently available pharmacological treatment.

Abstract
Thioflavin T fluorescence is a gold standard probe for the detection of amyloid fibrils. Herein, we showed that mature amyloid fibrils incubated with polyphenol epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) present a fast reduction of the thioflavin T fluorescence, which is not related to remodeling activity. We propose the use of the pentameric thiophene fluorescence for monitoring the polyphenol remodeling activity.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive accumulation of senile plaques, which are primarily composed of misfolded amyloid β-peptide (Aβ). Aβ aggregates are believed to be a key factor in the pathogenesis of AD, affecting the nervous system in human body. The therapeutic potential of tea-derived polyphenolic compounds, (-)-epigallocatechin (EGC) and (-)-epicatechin-3-gallate (ECG), for AD was investigated by assessing their effects on the Cu2+/Zn2+-induced or self-assembled Aβ40 aggregation using thioflavine T fluorescent spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, UV-Vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscope, silver staining, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence assays. EGC and ECG mildly bind to Cu2+ and Zn2+, and diminish the Cu2+- or Zn2+-induced or self-assembled Aβ aggregates; they also modulate the Cu2+/Zn2+-Aβ40 induced neurotoxicity on mouse neuroblastoma Neuro-2a cells by reducing the production of ROS. Metal chelating, hydrogen bonding or Van Der Waals force may drive the interaction between the polyphenolic compounds and Aβ. The results demonstrate that green tea catechins EGC and ECG are able to alleviate the toxicity of Aβ oligomers and fibrils. Particularly, ECG can cross the blood-brain barrier to reduce the Aβ plaques in the brain of APP/PS1 mice, thereby protecting neurons from injuries. The results manifest the potential of green tea for preventing or ameliorating the symptoms of AD.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia among older people. Amyloid β (Aβ) aggregation has been the focus for a therapeutic target for the treatment of AD. Naturally occurring polyphenols have an inhibitory effect on Aβ aggregation and have attracted a lot of attention for the development of treatment strategies which could mitigate the symptoms of AD. However, considerable evidence has shown that the pro-oxidant mechanisms of polyphenols could have a deleterious effect. Our group has established an assay system to evaluate the pro-oxidant characteristics of chemical compounds, based on their reactivity with DNA. In this review, we have summarized the anti-Aβ aggregation and pro-oxidant properties of polyphenols. These findings could contribute to understanding the mechanism underlying the potential risk of polyphenols. We would like to emphasize the importance of assessing the pro-oxidant properties of polyphenols from a safety point of view.

Abstract
Diospyros lotus L. (Ebenaceae) is a deciduous plant that was traditionally used to treat various diseases such as sedation, constipation, and hypertension. However, its effects on Alzheimer’s diseases (AD) have not been reported. We investigated the potent biological effects of D. lotus on AD and performed quantitative analysis of 7 standard compounds in D. lotus leaves. First, two parts leaf and branch of D. lotus were compared to examine the effects on amyloid-β (Aβ) aggregation and oxidative stress. Ethanol extract of D. lotus leaves (EDLL) had higher activities on the Aβ disaggregation and antioxidation compared with ethanol extract of D. lotus branches (EDLB). Second, we have focused on the biological activities of EDLL for neurocellular analyses. In HT22 neuronal cells, EDLL reversed hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-damaged cell death. In BV-2 microglia, EDLL suppressed lipopolysaccharide-stimulated productions of nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E2. Third, we performed quantitative analyses of 7 standard compounds in D. lotus using high-performance liquid chromatography. Among 7 compounds, myricitrin (44.189 mg/g) was the most abundant compound in EDLL. Myricetin presented the marked inhibitory effect on Aβ aggregation, indicating its potential as a bioactive compound to control Aβ aggregation. Overall, this study suggests that EDLL may be a promising therapeutic agent for AD via Aβ disaggregation, and inhibition of neuronal cell damage and inflammation.
