Abstract
Germination represents a vital bioprocess characterized by numerous biochemical transformations that significantly influence the nutritional characteristics of rice. The mobilization of starch and lipids during germination plays a pivotal role in altering the dietary profile of rice, thus potentially addressing the nutritional requirements of populations heavily reliant on rice as a staple food. To explore this potential, a comprehensive analysis encompassing lipidomics and starch composition was conducted on a diverse collection of pigmented rice sprouts. High-resolution mass spectrometry unveiled substantial shifts in the lipidome of pigmented rice sprouts, showcasing a notable enrichment in carotenoids and unsaturated triglycerides, with potential human health benefits. Notably, purple rice sprouts exhibited heightened levels of alpha- and beta-carotene. Analysis of starch composition revealed slight changes in amylose and amylopectin content; however, a consistent increase in digestible carbohydrates was observed across all rice varieties. Germination also led to a reduction in resistant starch content, with purple rice sprouts demonstrating a pronounced two-fold decrease (p < 0.05). These changes were corroborated by a 1.33% decrease in gelatinization enthalpy and a 0.40% reduction in the melting of the amylose-lipid complex. Furthermore, pasting property analysis indicated a substantial 42% decrease in the complexation index post-germination. We posit that the insights garnered from this study hold significant promise for the development of novel products enriched with health-promoting lipids and characterized by unique flour properties.

Abstract
The current study investigated the impact of germination duration on the functional components (vitamin C, γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), polyphenols, flavonoids) and antioxidant activity of germs and cotyledons of the germinated Chinese chestnut (Castanea mollissima). We utilized seeds of the "Zaofeng" Chinese chestnut to germinate, and sowed the seeds in wet sand at 22 °C and 85% relative humidity. The germination rate, length, diameter, and fresh weight of the sprouts were investigated at 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 days after sowing, and the kinetic changes of amylose, amylopectin, sugar components, soluble protein, vitamin C, GABA, total phenols, flavonoids, and the DPPH and ABTS free radical scavenging activity in the germs and cotyledons were monitored, respectively. The findings revealed that the germination rate and germ biomass increased continuously during germination. The germination rate reached 90% on the 8th day after sowing. Germination reduced amylose in cotyledons from 42.3% to 34.2%, amylopectin from 42.9% to 25.8%, total sugar from 12.6% to 11.4%, and vitamin C from 1.45 mg/g to 0.77 mg/g. Meanwhile, soluble protein in the embryos rose from 0.31% to 0.60%, vitamin C from 21.1 to 29.4 mg/g, GABA from 0.49 to 1.68 mg/g, total flavonoids from 53.6 to 129.7 mg/g, and ABTS antioxidant activity from 1.52 to 3.27 μmol TE/g. The average contents of D-fructose, inositol, vitamin C, GABA, polyphenols, and flavonoids and the DPPH and ABTS antioxidant activity in germs were as high as 22.5, 6, 35, 7.5, 10, 20, and 10 and 20-fold those of cotyledons, respectively. Especially, the average content of glucose in germ was as high as 80-fold that of cotyledon. D-xylulose, D-galacturonic acid, and D-ribose were only found in germs, but not in cotyledons. Considering the germ biomass and functional components content, germs of Chinese chestnuts germinated at 22 °C for 8 days are considered the most suitable raw material for functional food products. In conclusion, controlled germination not only enhances the physicochemical and functional properties of Chinese chestnut germs but also reduces the caloric content and improves the nutritional composition of the cotyledons appropriately. Moreover, the comprehensive evaluation of compositional changes and functionality in the embryo and cotyledon of Chinese chestnuts will provide a solid foundation for subsequent functional food processing utilizing germinated Chinese chestnuts.

Abstract
Rice bran, recognized for its rich lipids and health-beneficial bioactive compounds, holds considerable promise in applications such as rice bran oil production. However, its susceptibility to lipid hydrolysis and oxidation during storage presents a significant challenge. In response, we conducted an in-depth metabolic profiling of rice bran over a storage period of 14 days. We focused on the identification of bioactive compounds and functional lipid species (25 acylglycerols and 53 phospholipids), closely tracking their dynamic changes over time. Our findings revealed significant reductions in these lipid molecular species, highlighting the impact of rancidity processes. Furthermore, we identified 19 characteristic lipid markers and elucidated that phospholipid and glycerolipid metabolism were key metabolic pathways involved. By shedding light on the mechanisms driving lipid degradation in stored rice bran, our study significantly advanced the understanding of lipid stability. These information provided valuable insights for countering rancidity and optimizing rice bran preservation strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oil bodies or lipid droplets (LDs) in the cytosol are the subcellular storage compartments of seeds and the sites of lipid metabolism providing energy to the germinating seeds. Major LD-associated proteins are lipoxygenases, phospholipaseD, oleosins, TAG-lipases, steroleosins, caleosins and SEIPINs; involved in facilitating germination and enhancing peroxidation resulting in off-flavours. However, how natural selection is balancing contradictory processes in lipid-rich seeds remains evasive. The present study was aimed at the prediction of selection signatures among orthologous clades in major oilseeds and the correlation of selection effect with gene expression. RESULTS The LD-associated genes from the major oil-bearing crops were analyzed to predict natural selection signatures in phylogenetically close-knit ortholog clusters to understand adaptive evolution. Positive selection was the major force driving the evolution and diversification of orthologs in a lineage-specific manner. Significant positive selection effects were found in 94 genes particularly in oleosin and TAG-lipases, purifying with excess of non-synonymous substitution in 44 genes while 35 genes were neutral to selection effects. No significant selection impact was noticed in Brassicaceae as against LOX genes of oil palm. A heavy load of deleterious mutations affecting selection signatures was detected in T-lineage oleosins and LOX genes of Arachis hypogaea. The T-lineage oleosin genes were involved in mainly anther, tapetum and anther wall morphogenesis. In Ricinus communis and Sesamum indicum > 85% of PLD genes were under selection whereas selection pressures were low in Brassica juncea and Helianthus annuus. Steroleosin, caleosin and SEIPINs with large roles in lipid droplet organization expressed mostly in seeds and were under considerable positive selection pressures. Expression divergence was evident among paralogs and homeologs with one gene attaining functional superiority compared to the other. The LOX gene Glyma.13g347500 associated with off-flavor was not expressed during germination, rather its paralog Glyma.13g347600 showed expression in Glycine max. PLD-α genes were expressed on all the tissues except the seed,δ genes in seed and meristem while β and γ genes expressed in the leaf. CONCLUSIONS The genes involved in seed germination and lipid metabolism were under strong positive selection, although species differences were discernable. The present study identifies suitable candidate genes enhancing seed oil content and germination wherein directional selection can become more fruitful.

Abstract
Recent explorations into rice bran oil (RBO) have highlighted its potential, owing to an advantageous fatty acid profile in the context of health and nutrition. Despite this, the susceptibility of rice bran lipids to oxidative degradation during storage remains a critical concern. This study focuses on the evolution of lipid degradation in RBO during storage, examining the increase in free fatty acids (FFAs), the formation of oxylipids, and the generation of volatile secondary oxidation products. Our findings reveal a substantial rise in FFA levels, from 109.55 to 354.06 mg/g, after 14 days of storage, highlighting significant lipid deterioration. Notably, key oxylipids, including 9,10-EpOME, 12,13(9,10)-DiHOME, and 13-oxoODE, were identified, with a demonstrated positive correlation between total oxylipids and free polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), specifically linoleic acid (LA) and α-linolenic acid (ALA). Furthermore, the study provides a detailed analysis of primary volatile secondary oxidation products. The insights gained from this study not only sheds light on the underlying mechanisms of lipid rancidity in rice bran but also offers significant implications for extending the shelf life and preserving the nutritional quality of RBO, aligning with the increasing global interest in this high-quality oil.

Abstract
Lysine acetylation is a dynamic post-translational modification of proteins. Extensive studies have revealed that the acetylation modulated by histone acetyltransferases and histone deacetylases (HDACs) plays a crucial role in regulating protein function. However, there has been limited focus on how HDACs regulate jasmonic acid (JA) biosynthesis in plants. Here, we uncover that the protein stability of OsLOX14, a critical enzyme involved in JA biosynthesis, is regulated by a histone deacetylase, OsHDA706, and is hindered by a viral protein. Our results show that OsHDA706 deacetylates OsLOX14 and enhances the stability of OsLOX14, leading to JA accumulation and an improved broad-spectrum rice antiviral defense. Furthermore, we found that the viral protein P2, encoded by the destructive rice stripe virus, disrupts the association of OsHDA706-OsLOX14, promoting viral infection. Overall, our findings reveal how HDAC manipulates the interplay of deacetylation and protein stability of a JA biosynthetic enzyme to enhance plant antiviral responses.

Abstract
Rice is a popular grain and forms part of the daily diet of people throughout the world. However, the consumption of rice and its products is sometimes limited by its high glycemic index due to its high starch content, low protein content and quality, and low bioavailability of minerals due to the presence of anti-nutritional factors. This has partly stimulated research interest in recent times toward the use of bioprocessing techniques such as germination as cheap and natural means to improve the nutritional quality, digestibility, and health properties of cereals, including rice, to partially achieve nutrition and food security in the developing regions of the world. This review highlights the impact of germination on the nutritional quality, health-promoting properties, and techno-functional characteristics of germinated brown rice grains and their products. The review demonstrated that germinated rice grains and their products have improved nutritional quality and digestibility, modified functional properties, and showed antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-obesity, anti-cancer, and anti-cardiovascular activities. Germination appears to be a suitable bioprocessing method to improve the nutritional quality and bioactive constituents and modify the techno-functional properties of rice grains for diverse food applications and improved global nutrition and food safety.

Abstract
Rice is a primary food and is one of the most important constituents of diets all around the world. Rice bran is a valuable component of rice, containing many oil-soluble vitamins, minerals, and oil. It is known for its ability to improve the economic value of rice. Further, it contains substantial quantities of minerals like potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron and antioxidants like tocopherols, tocotrienols, and γ-oryzanol, indicating that rice bran can be utilized effectively against several life-threatening disorders. It is difficult to fully utilize the necessary nutrients due to the presence of lipases in rice bran. These lipases break down lipids, specifically Triacylglycerol, into free fatty acids and glycerol. This review discusses physicochemical properties, mechanism of action, distribution, and activity of lipases in various components of rice seeds. The phylogenetic and gene expression analysis helped to understand the differential expression pattern of lipase genes at different growth phases of rice plant. Further, this review discusses various genetic and biotechnological approaches to decrease lipase activity in rice and other plants, which could potentially prevent the degradation of bran oil. The goal is to establish whether lipases are a major contributor to this issue and to develop rice varieties with improved bran stability. Abstract
During seed aging, there is a critical node (CN) where the population viability drops sharply. Exploring the specific locations of the CN in different species of plants is crucial for understanding the biological storage properties of seeds and refining seed life span management. Safflower, a bulk oil crop that relies on seeds for propagation, has a short seed life. However, at present, its biological characteristics during storage are not clear, especially the changes in metabolic capability and cell structures. Such knowledge is needed to improve the management of safflower seed life span and effective preservation in gene banks. Here, the seed survival curve of oilseed safflower under the controlled deterioration conditions of 60% relative humidity and 50°C was detected. The seed population showed an inverted S shape for the fall in germination. In the first 12 days of aging, germination remained above 86%. Prior to the CN at approximately day 10 (C10), when viability was in the "plateau" interval, seed vigor reduced at the same imbibition time point. Further analysis of the changes in sugar concentration found that the sucrose content decreased slowly with aging and the content of raffinose and two monosaccharides decreased abruptly at C10. Differentially metabolized lipids, namely lysophospholipids [lyso-phosphatidylcholine (LPC) and lyso-phosphatidylethanolamines (LPE)] and PMeOH, increased at day 3 of aging (C3). Fatty acid content increased by C6, and the content of phospholipids [phosphatidylcholines (PC), phosphatidylethanolamines (PE), and phosphatidylinositols (PI) and glycolipids [digalactosyl diacylglycerol, monogalactosyl diacylglycerol, and sulphoquinovosyl diglycerides (SQDG)] decreased significantly from C10. In addition, the activities of raffinose hydrolase alpha-galactosidase and the glyoxylate key enzyme isocitrate lyase decreased with seed aging. Confocal microscopy and transmission electron microscopy revealed shrinkage of the seed plasma membrane at C10 and the later fragmentation. Seedling phenotypic indicators and 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride activity assays also verified that there were significant changes in seeds quality at the CN. In summary, the time point C10 is a CN during seed population aging. Before the CN, sugar and lipid metabolism, especially fatty acid metabolism into sugar, can make up for the energy consumed by aging. After this point, the seeds were irreversibly damaged, and their viability was greatly and rapidly reduced as the cell structure became increasingly destroyed.

Abstract
Plants have evolved mechanisms to adapt to wounding, a threat occurring separately or concomitantly with other stresses. During the last decades, many efforts have been made to elucidate the wounding signaling transduction. However, we know little about the metabolic re-programming under wounding, let alone whether and how strigolactones (SLs) participate in this progress. Here, we reported a metabolomic and transcriptomic analysis of SLs synthetic and signal mutants in rice before and after wounding. A series of metabolites differentially responded to wounding in the SLs mutants and wild-type rice, among which flavones were enriched. Besides, the SLs mutants accumulated more jasmonic acid (JA) and jasmonyl isoleucine (JA-lle) than the wild-type rice after wounding, suggesting an interplay of SLs and JAs during responding to wounding. Further transcriptome data showed that cell wall, ethylene, and flavones pathways might be affected by wounding and SLs. In addition, we identified candidate genes regulated by SLs and responding to wounding. In conclusion, our work provides new insights into wounding-induced metabolic re-programming and the SLs' function.

Abstract
Galactolipids are essential to compensate for the loss of phospholipids by 'membrane lipid remodelling' in plants under phosphorus (P) deficiency conditions. Monogalactosyl diacylglycerol (MGDG) synthases catalyse the synthesis of MGDG which is further converted into digalactosyl diacylglycerol (DGDG), later replacing phospholipids in the extraplastidial membranes. However, the roles of these enzymes are not well explored in rice. In this study, the rice MGDG synthase 3 gene (OsMGD3) was identified and functionally characterized. We showed that the plant phosphate (Pi) status and the transcription factor PHOSPHATE STARVATION RESPONSE 2 (OsPHR2) are involved in the transcriptional regulation of OsMGD3. CRISPR/Cas9 knockout and overexpression lines of OsMGD3 were generated to explore its potential role in rice adaptation to Pi deficiency. Compared with the wild type, OsMGD3 knockout lines displayed a reduced Pi acquisition and utilization while overexpression lines showed an enhancement of the same. Further, OsMGD3 showed a predominant role in roots, altering lateral root growth. Our comprehensive lipidomic analysis revealed a role of OsMGD3 in membrane lipid remodelling, in addition to a role in regulating diacylglycerol and phosphatidic acid contents that affected the expression of Pi transporters. Our study highlights the role of OsMGD3 in affecting both internal P utilization and P acquisition in rice.

Abstract
Fatty acid derived volatiles (FADVs) are major contributors to the aroma quality of oolong tea (Camellia sinensis). Most of the processing time for oolong tea is taken up by turning over treatments, but the full profile of fatty acid metabolic changes during this process remains unclear. In this study, we detected fatty acids, their derived volatiles, and related genes of Tieguanyin oolong tea using biochemical and molecular biology methods. The results showed that with an increase in turning over intensities, the content of total unsaturated fatty acids continuously dropped and the content of characteristic FADVs, such as hexanoic acid (Z)-3-Hexenly ester and 2-exenal, continued to increase. Lipoxygenase (LOX), a key gene family in the fatty acid metabolic pathway, showed different patterns, and CsLOX1 (TEA025499.1) was considered to be a key gene during the turning over processes. We found that fruit-like aroma (Z)-3-Hexen-1-ol acetate had a strong correlation with the expression levels of eight Camelia sinensis LOX family genes. Tieguanyin had relatively rich pleasant volatile compounds with moderate turning over intensity (five times turning over treatments). This study provides an overall view of how fatty acid metabolites change and affect the quality of oolong tea with different turning over intensities during processing.

Abstract
The phytohormone jasmonate plays a pivotal role in various aspects of plant life, including developmental programs and defense against pests and pathogens. A large body of knowledge on jasmonate biosynthesis, signal transduction as well as its functions in diverse plant processes has been gained in the past two decades. In addition, there exists extensive crosstalk between jasmonate pathway and other phytohormone pathways, such as salicylic acid (SA) and gibberellin (GA), in co-regulation of plant immune status, fine-tuning the balance of plant growth and defense, and so on, which were mostly learned from studies in the dicotyledonous model plants Arabidopsis thaliana and tomato but much less in monocot. Interestingly, existing evidence suggests both conservation and functional divergence in terms of core components of jasmonate pathway, its biological functions and signal integration with other phytohormones, between monocot and dicot. In this review, we summarize the current understanding on JA signal initiation, perception and regulation, and highlight the distinctive characteristics in different lineages of plants.

Abstract
Hexanal and (E)-2-hexenal in soymilk mainly form during the soaking and grinding of soybeans. In this study, freshly dehulled soybeans were soaked or ground in the presence or absence of different enzyme inhibitors. The results showed that (1) 1-palmitoyl-2-linoleoyl-sn-3-phosphatidylcholine, 1-stearoyl-2-linoleoyl-sn-3-phosphatidylcholine, 1-palmitoyl-2-linolenoyl-sn-3-phosphatidylcholine, and 1-stearoyl-2-linolenoyl-sn-3-phosphatidylcholine were preferentially acted upon by lipoxygenases (LOXs) and made predominant contributions to hexanal/(E)-2-hexenal formation. Phospholipase A2 (PLA2) is one of the key enzymes for hexanal/(E)-2-hexenal formation. (2) The ratio of net increase in hexanal/(E)-2-hexenal and net decrease in linoleic acid/linolenic acid was close to 100% during soaking, but it was only 60% during grinding. Only 13-hydroperoxy octadecad(tr)ienoic acid (13-HPOD/T) was formed for the membrane LOX, but both 13- and 9-hydroperoxy octadecad(tr)ienoic acid (9-HPOD/T) were produced for the cytoplasm LOX. Thus, only the membrane LOX was involved during soaking, while both membrane- and cytoplasm-bound LOXs worked during grinding. (3) Hydroperoxides and hexanal/(E)-2-hexenal during soybean grinding were studied. PC hydroperoxides formed almost instantly and reached a maximum in 10 s, while fatty acid hydroperoxides and hexanal/(E)-2-hexenal formed relatively slowly and reached a maximum in 50 s. The experimental data were fitted to the integrated form of the Michaelis-Menten equation, and Km, Vmax, and kcat for the LOX, PLA2, and hydroperoxide lyase were obtained, respectively.

Abstract
Overexpression of forage sorghum oleosin genes in Arabidopsis oleosin-deficient mutant and yeast showed increased germination rate, triacylglycerol content, and protection against lipase-mediated TAG degradation. Plant lipids are an important source of ration for cattle or other livestock animals to fulfil their energy needs. Poor energy containing green forages are still one of the major sources of food for livestock animals, leaving the animals undernourished. This lowers the milk and meat production efficiency, thereby affecting human consumption. Oleosin, an essential oil body surface protein, is capable of enhancing and stabilizing the lipid content in plants. We identified and functionally characterized three forage sorghum oleosin genes (SbOle1, SbOle2, and SbOle3) in Arabidopsis and yeast. Phylogenetic analysis of SbOle proteins showed a close relationship with rice and maize oleosins. Expression analysis of SbOle genes determined a higher expression pattern in embryo followed by endosperm, while its expression in the non-seed tissues remained negligible. Overexpression of SbOle genes in Arabidopsis ole1-deficient mutants showed restoration of normal germination whereas control mutant seeds showed lower germination rates. Heterologous overexpression of SbOle in yeast cells resulted in increased TAG accumulation. Additionally, the TAG turnover assay showed the effectiveness of SbOle genes in reducing the yeast endogenous and rumen bacterial lipase-mediated TAG degradation. Taken together, our findings not only provide insights into forage sorghum oleosin for increasing the energy content in non-seed organs but also opened up the direction towards implication of oleosin in rumen protection of fodders.

Abstract
Expression pattern indicates that JA biosynthesis pathway via regulating JA levels might control root system architecture to improve nutrient use efficiency (NUE) and N, P, K+ deficiency tolerance in rice. Deficiencies of macronutrients (N, P and K+) and consequent excessive use of fertilizers have dramatically reduced soil fertility. It calls for development of nutrient use efficient plants. Plants combat nutrient deficiencies by altering their root system architecture (RSA) to enhance the acquisition of nutrients from the soil. Amongst various phytohormones, Jasmonic acid (JA) is known to regulate plant root growth and modulate RSA. Therefore, to understand the role of JA in macronutrient deficiency in rice, expression pattern of JA biosynthesis genes was analyzed under N, P and K+ deficiencies. Several members belonging to different families of JA biosynthesis genes (PLA1, LOX, AOS, AOC, OPR, ACX and JAR1) showed differential expression exclusively in one nutrient deficiency or in multiple nutrient deficiencies. Expression analysis during developmental stages showed that several genes expressed significantly in vegetative tissues, particularly in root. In addition, JA biosynthesis genes were found to have significant expression under the treatment of different phytohormones, including Auxin, cytokinin, gibberellic acid (GA), abscisic acid (ABA), JA and abiotic stresses, such as drought, salinity and cold. Analysis of promoters of these genes revealed various cis-regulatory elements associated with hormone response, plant development and abiotic stresses. These findings suggest that JA biosynthesis pathway by regulating the level of JA might control the RSA thus, it may help rice plant in combating macronutrient deficiency.

Abstract
Among the 113 lipases present in rice genome, bran and endosperm-specific lipases were identified and lipase activity for one of the selected lipase gene is demonstrated in yeast. Rice bran is nutritionally superior than endosperm as it has major reservoirs of various minerals, vitamins, essential mineral oils and other bioactive compounds, however it is often under-utilized as a food product due to bran instability after milling. Various hydrolytic enzymes, such as lipases, present in bran causes degradation of the lipids present and are responsible for the bran instability. Here, in this study, we have systematically analyzed the 113 lipase genes present in rice genome, and identified 21 seed-specific lipases. By analyzing the expression of these genes in different seed tissues during seed development, we have identified three bran-specific and three endosperm-specific lipases, and one lipase which expresses in both bran and endosperm tissues. Further analysis of these genes during seed maturation and seed germination revealed that their expression increases during seed maturation and decreases during seed germination. Finally, we have shown the lipase activity for one of the selected genes, LOC_Os05g30900, in heterologous system yeast. The bran-specific lipases identified in this study would be very valuable for engineering designer rice varieties having increased bran stability in post-milling.

Abstract
Two OsDGAT1 genes showed the ability to restore TAG and LB synthesis in yeast H1246. Alterations in the N-terminal region of OsDGAT1-1 gene revealed its regulatory role in gene function. Accumulation of triacylglycerol (TAG) or oil in vegetative tissues has emerged as a promising approach to meet the global needs of food, feed, and fuel. Rice (Oryza sativa) has been recognized as an important cereal crop containing nutritional rice bran oil with high economic value for renewable energy production. To identify the key component involved in storage lipid biosynthesis, two type-1 diacylglycerol acyltransferases (DGAT1) from rice were characterized for its in vivo function in the H1246 (dga1, lro1, are1 and are2) yeast quadruple mutant. The ectopic expression of rice DGAT1 (designated as OsDGAT1-1 and OsDGAT1-2) genes restored the capability of TAG synthesis and lipid body (LB) formation in H1246. OsDGAT1-1 showed nearly equal substrate preferences to C16:0-CoA and 18:1-CoA whereas OsDGAT1-2 displayed substrate selectivity for C16:0-CoA over 18:1-CoA, indicating that these enzymes have contrasting substrate specificities. In parallel, we have identified the intrinsically disordered region (IDR) at the N-terminal domains of OsDGAT1 proteins. The regulatory role of the N-terminal domain was dissected. Single point mutations at the phosphorylation sites and truncations of the N-terminal region highlighted reduced lipid accumulation capabilities among different OsDGAT1-1 variants.

Abstract
Triacylglycerol Lipases (TGLs) are the major enzymes involved in triacylglycerol catabolism. TGLs hydrolyze long-chain fatty acid triglycerides, which are involved in plant development and abiotic stress responses. Whereas most studies of TGLs have focused on seed oil metabolism and biofuel in plants, limited information is available regarding the genome-wide identification and characterization of the TGL gene family in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.). Based on the latest published tomato genome annotation ITAG4.0, 129 SlTGL genes were identified and classified into 5 categories according to their structural characteristics. Most SlTGL genes were distributed on 3 of 12 chromosomes. Segment duplication appeared to be the driving force underlying expansion of the TGL gene family in tomato. The promoter analysis revealed that the promoters of SlTGLs contained many stress responsiveness cis-elements, such as ARE, LTR, MBS, WRE3, and WUN-motifs. Expression of the majority of SlTGL genes was suppressed following exposure to chilling and heat, while it was induced under drought stress, such as SlTGLa9, SlTGLa6, SlTGLa25, SlTGLa26, and SlTGLa13. These results provide valuable insights into the roles of the SlTGL genes family and lay a foundation for further functional studies on the linkage between triacylglycerol catabolism and abiotic stress responses in tomato.
