Abstract
Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) ranks fifth in importance among vegetable crops of the Solanaceae family, in part due to the high antioxidant properties and polyphenol content of the fruit. Along with the popular purple-fruited varieties of S. melongena, there are cultivars, the fruits of which are rich in phenolic compounds, but are white-colored due to the lack of anthocyanin biosynthesis. Determination of the amount of anthocyanins and other phenolic compounds, as well as carotenoids and sugars, is included in the assessment of the quality of eggplant fruits of commercial (technical) ripeness. In addition to antioxidant and taste properties, these metabolites are associated with fruit resistance to various stress factors. In this study, a comparative analysis of the content of anthocyanins, carotenoids and soluble sugars (sucrose, glucose, fructose) in the peel and pulp of the fruit of both technical and biological ripeness was carried out in purple-fruited (cv. Vlas) and white-fruited (cv. Snezhny) eggplant accessions of domestic selection. The peel and pulp of biologically ripe fruits of the cvs Vlas and Snezhny were used for comparative transcriptomic analysis. The key genes of the flavonoid and carotenoid metabolism, sucrose hydrolysis, and soluble sugar transport were shown to be differentially expressed between fruit tissues, both within each cultivar and between them. It has been confirmed that the purple color of the peel of the cv. Vlas fruit is due to substantial amounts of anthocyanins. Flavonoid biosynthesis genes showed a significantly lower expression level in the ripe fruit of the cv. Vlas in comparison with the cv. Snezhny. However, in both cultivars, transcripts of anthocyanin biosynthesis genes (DFR, ANS, UFGT) were not detected. Additionally, the purple fruit of the cv. Vlas accumulated more carotenoids and sucrose and less glucose and fructose than the white fruit of the cv. Snezhny. Biochemical data corresponded to the differential expression pattern of the key genes encoding the structural proteins of metabolism and transport of the compounds analyzed.

Abstract
Ash trees (Fraxinus) exhibit rich genetic diversity and wide adaptation to various ecological environments, and several species are highly salt tolerant. Dissecting the genomic basis of salt adaptation in Fraxinus is vital for its resistance breeding. Here, we present 11 high-quality chromosome-level genome assemblies for Fraxinus species, which reveal two unequal subgenome compositions and two recent whole-genome triplication events in their evolutionary history. A Fraxinus pan-genome was constructed on the basis of structural variations and revealed that presence-absence variations (PAVs) of transmembrane transport genes have likely contributed to salt adaptation in Fraxinus. Through whole-genome resequencing of an F1 population from an interspecies cross of F. velutina 'Lula 3' (salt tolerant) with F. pennsylvanica 'Lula 5' (salt sensitive), we mapped salt-tolerance PAV-based quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and pinpointed two PAV-QTLs and candidate genes associated with Fraxinus salt tolerance. Mechanistically, FvbHLH85 enhances salt tolerance by mediating reactive oxygen species and Na+/K+ homeostasis, whereas FvSWEET5 enhances salt tolerance by mediating osmotic homeostasis. Collectively, these findings provide valuable genomic resources for Fraxinus salt-resistance breeding and the research community.

Abstract
The SWEETs (sugars will eventually be exported transporter) family comprises a class of recently identified sugar transporters that play diverse roles in regulating plant development. Beyond those fundamental functions, emerging evidence suggests that SWEETs may also be involved in plant stress responses, such as salt tolerance. However, the specific role of maize SWEETs in regulating salt tolerance remains unexplored. In this study, we demonstrate that two maize SWEET family members, ZmSWEET15a and ZmSWEET15b, are typical sugar transporters with seven transmembrane helices localized in the cell membrane. The heterologous expression of ZmSWEET15a and ZmSWEET15b in the yeast mutant strain confirms their role as sucrose transporters. Overexpression of ZmSWEET15a and ZmSWEET15b in Arabidopsis resulted in improved NaCl resistance and significant increase in seed germination rate compared to the wild type. Furthermore, by generating maize knockout mutants, we observe that the absence of ZmSWEET15a and ZmSWEET15b affects both plant growth and grain development. The salt treatment results indicate that the knockout mutants of these two genes are more sensitive to salt stress. Comparative analyses revealed that wild-type maize plants outperformed the knockout mutants in terms of growth parameters and physiological indices. Our findings unravel a novel function of ZmSWEET15a and ZmSWEET15b in the salt stress response, offering a theoretical foundation for enhancing maize salt resistance.

Abstract
Plants have evolved the adaptive capacity to mitigate the negative effect of external adversities at chemical, molecular, cellular, and physiological levels. This capacity is conferred by triggering the coordinated action of internal regulatory factors, in which sugars play an essential role in the regulating chloroplast degradation and leaf senescence under various stresses. In this review, we summarize the recent findings on the senescent-associated changes in carbohydrate metabolism and its relation to chlorophyl degradation, oxidative damage, photosynthesis inhibition, programmed cell death (PCD), and sink-source relation as affected by abiotic stresses. The action of sugar signaling in regulating the initiation and progression of leaf senescence under abiotic stresses involves interactions with various plant hormones, reactive oxygen species (ROS) burst, and protein kinases. This discussion aims to elucidate the complex regulatory network and molecular mechanisms that underline sugar-induced leaf senescence in response to various abiotic stresses. The imperative role of sugar signaling in regulating plant stress responses potentially enables the production of crop plants with modified sugar metabolism. This, in turn, may facilitate the engineering of plants with improved stress responses, optimal life span and higher yield achievement.

Abstract
Bleeding is as particularly a serious phenomenon in Actinidia arguta and has important effects on this plant's growth and development. Here we used A. arguta to study the effects of bleeding on the growth and development of leaves and fruits after a bleeding episode. We detect and analyze physiological indices of leaves and fruit after bleeding. The result revealed that the relative electrical conductivity and malondialdehyde (MDA) of leaves increased in treatment. Nitro blue tetrazolium chloride (NBT) and 3,3-diaminobenzidine (DAB) staining revealed the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in leaves after bleeding. The chlorophyll content and photosynthetic parameter of plants were also decreased. In fruits, pulp and seed water content decreased after the damage, as did fruit vitamin C (Vc), soluble sugar content, and soluble solids content (SSC); the titratable acid content did not change significantly. We therefore conclude that bleeding affects the physiological indices of A. arguta. Our study provides a theoretical basis for understanding the physiological changes of A. arguta after bleeding episodes and laying a timely foundation for advancing research on A. arguta bleeding and long-term field studies should be executed in order to gain insights into underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
As a starchy and edible tropical plant, cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) has been widely used as an industrial raw material and a dietary source. However, the metabolomic and genetic differences in specific germplasms of cassava storage root were unclear. In this study, two specific germplasms, M. esculenta Crantz cv. sugar cassava GPMS0991L and M. esculenta Crantz cv. pink cassava BRA117315, were used as research materials. Results showed that sugar cassava GPMS0991L was rich in glucose and fructose, whereas pink cassava BRA117315 was rich in starch and sucrose. Metabolomic and transcriptomic analysis indicated that sucrose and starch metabolism had significantly changing metabolites enrichment and the highest degree of differential expression genes, respectively. Sugar transport in storage roots may contribute to the activities of sugar, which will eventually be exported to transporters (SWEETs), such as (MeSWEET1a, MeSWEET2b, MeSWEET4, MeSWEET5, MeSWEET10b, and MeSWEET17c), which transport hexose to plant cells. The expression level of genes involved in starch biosynthesis and metabolism were altered, which may result in starch accumulation. These results provide a theoretical basis for sugar transport and starch accumulation and may be useful in improving the quality of tuberous crops and increasing yield.
