Abstract
The title compound, C17H12O4, was synthesized from the dye alizarin. The dihedral angle between the mean plane of the anthra-quinone ring system (r.m.s. deviation = 0.039 Å) and the dioxepine ring is 16.29 (8)°. In the crystal, the mol-ecules are linked by C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming sheets lying parallel to the ab plane. The sheets are connected through π-π and C=O⋯π inter-actions to generate a three-dimensional supra-molecular network. Hirshfeld surface analysis was used to investigate inter-molecular inter-actions in the solid-state: the most important contributions are from H⋯H (43.0%), H⋯O/O⋯H (27%), H⋯C/C⋯H (13.8%) and C⋯C (12.4%) contacts.

A dual functional turn-on non-toxic chemosensor for highly selective and sensitive visual detection of Mg 2+ and Zn 2+: the solvent-controlled recognition effect and bio-imaging application. Abstract
A new dual functional turn-on chemosensor, 2,6-diformyl-4-methylphenol-di(isoquinolinyl-1-hydrazone) (HL), has been developed, which could highly selectively discriminate Mg2+ and Zn2+ in different solvent systems. The chemosensor HL exhibits rapid visual turn-on fluorescence enhancing recognition toward Mg2+/Zn2+, which is not interfered by other cations, especially for respective congeners Ca2+/Cd2+. The remarkable fluorescence enhancement (71-fold or 11-fold) was observed after adding Mg2+ in acetonitrile or Zn2+ in DMF-H2O solvent systems. Additionally such a solvent medium-controlled platform could achieve the quantitative determination of Mg2+ and Zn2+ quantitation with low detection limits of 2.97 × 10-8 M and 3.07 × 10-7 M, respectively. Furthermore, the turn-on fluorescence sensing mechanism is also investigated by 1H NMR, FT-IR and ESI-MS spectroscopy. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations derive optimized geometries of HL and its complexes. Notably, non-toxic HL also can be successfully applied as a visual probe for the practical determination of Mg2+/Zn2+ in MCF-7 cells, Zebrafish larvae, syrup and water samples, which might provide extensive application in biology and medicine fields.

Abstract
Carminic acid, a natural hydrophilic dye extensively used in the food and cosmetic industries, is converted in hydrophobic dyes by acetylation or pivaloylation. These derivatives are successfully used as biocolourants for rubber objects. In this paper, spectroscopic properties of the carminic acid derivatives in dimethyl sulfoxide and in polybutylacrylate are studied by means of photoluminescence and time-resolved photoluminescence decays, revealing a hypsochromic effect due to the presence of bulky substituents as the acetyl or pivaloyl groups. Molecular mechanics and density functional theory calculations confirm the disruption of planarity between the sugar ring and the anthraquinoid system determined by the esterification.

Abstract
New colorimetric chemosensor, N'-[(E)-3-Bromo-5-Chloro-2-hydroxybenzidene]-4-hydroxybenzohydrazide, containing OH and NH groups as binding sites have been synthesized and characterized by spectral UV, IR, NMR and ESR. The molecular structure of ligand is determined by X-ray crystallography and it has the monoclinic space group P21/c with cell parameters a=15.1058(6), b=14.3433(6), c=17.5800(8)Å and Z=8. The electronic spectral measurements show that Co(2+), Ni(2+) and Zn(2+) complexes have tetrahedral geometry, while Cu(2+) complex has square planar geometry. Magnetic measurements show that Cu(2+), Co(2+) and Ni(2+) complexes have paramagnetic behavior and Zn(2+) complex has diamagnetic behavior. Anion binding studies carried out using (1)H NMR and UV-visible spectrophotometric titrations revealed that these receptors exhibit selective recognition towards F(-) over other halide anions. The selectivity for F(-) among the halides is attributed mainly to the hydrogen-bond interaction of the receptor with F(-). Receptor (5 × 10(-5)M) shows color change from colorless to yellow in the presence of tetrabutylammonium fluoride (TBAF, 1.5 × 10(-3)M). Moreover, F(-)-induced color changes remain the same even in the presence of large excess of Cl(-), Br(-) and I(-). The binding constant is found to be higher towards F(-) ion and this may be due to presence of OH group, which offers extra binding site. Chromogenic receptor undergoes distinct color changes from colorless to green on gradual addition of Cu(2+) can be used as colorimetric probes for spectrophotometric and visual analysis of Cu(2+) in the presence of other transition metal ions such as Co(2+), Ni(2+) and Zn(2+).

Abstract
Two chromogenic complexes, L.Zn (where L is (E)-4-((4-(1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecan-1-ylsulfonyl)phenyl)diazenyl)-N,N-dimethylaniline) and its [2]pseudorotaxane form (α-CD.L.Zn), were found to bind preferentially to adenosine triphosphate (ATP), among all other common anions and biologically important phosphate (AMP, ADP, pyrophosphate, and phosphate) ions in aqueous HEPES buffer medium of pH 7.2. Studies with live cell cultures of prokaryotic microbes revealed that binding of these two reagents to intercellular ATP, produced in situ, could be used in delineating the gram-positive and the gram-negative bacteria. More importantly, these dyes were found to be nontoxic to living microbes (eukaryotes and prokaryotes) and could be used for studying the cell growth dynamics. Binding to these two viable staining agents to intercellular ATP was also confirmed by spectroscopic studies on cell growth in the presence of different respiratory inhibitors that influence the intercellular ATP generation.
