Abstract
Citrulline (C6H13N3O3) is an amino acid found in the body as a zwitterion. This means its carboxylic and amine groups can act as Lewis donors to chelate metal cations. In addition, citrulline possesses a terminal ureido group on its aliphatic chain, which also appears to coordinate. Here, two new mixed complexes of citrulline were made with 1,10-phenanthroline and 2,2'-bipyridine. These compounds, once dissolved in water, gave aquo-complexes that were subject to DFT studies and in vitro toxicity studies on cancer cell lines (HeLa, MDA-MB-231, HCT 15, and MCF7) showed promising results. Docking studies with DNA were also conducted, indicating potential anticancer properties.

Antibacterial Activity of Copper Nanoparticles (CuNPs) against a Resistant Calcium Hydroxide Multispecies Endodontic Biofilm. NANOMATERIALS 2021; 11:nano11092254. Abstract
Endodontic treatment reduces the amount of bacteria by using antimicrobial agents to favor healing. However, disinfecting all of the canal system is difficult due to its anatomical complexity and may result in endodontic failure. Copper nanoparticles have antimicrobial activity against diverse microorganisms, especially to resistant strains, and offer a potential alternative for disinfection during endodontic therapy. This study evaluated the antibacterial action of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) on an ex vivo multispecies biofilm using plaque count compared to the antibacterial activity of calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2. There were significant differences between the Ca(OH)2 and CuNPs groups as an intracanal dressing compared with the CuNPs groups as an irrigation solution (p < 0.0001). An increase in the count of the group exposed to 7 days of Ca(OH)2 was observed compared to the group exposed to Ca(OH)2 for 1 day. These findings differ from what was observed with CuNPs in the same period of time. Antibacterial activity of CuNPs was observed on a multispecies biofilm, detecting an immediate action and over-time effect, gradually reaching their highest efficacy on day 7 after application. The latter raises the possibility of the emergence of Ca(OH)2-resistant strains and supports the use of CuNPs as alternative intracanal medication.

Abstract
Design and biological activities of fluorescent imidazo-phenanthroline derivatives; (E)-5-((4-((4-(1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthrolin-2-yl)phenoxy)methyl)benzylidene)amino)- isophthalicacid, 2 and 2-(4-(((5-chloroquinolin-8-yl)oxy)methyl)phenyl)-1H-imidazo[4,5f] [1,10]phenanthroline, 3, have been reported. Their characterizations were performed by spectroscopic techniques. Their promising photophysical behaviours were observed in absorbance and fluorescence studies. The antibacterial activities of the compounds were determined against seven different microorganisms; Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633(G + ), Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 29853(G-), Escherichia coli ATCC 35,218 (G-), Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 292,112 (G + ), Salmonella typhimurium ST-10 (G-), Streptococcus mutans NCTC 10,449 (G + ), and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923(G + ). MIC values of 3 was determined as 156,25 μM on all tested bacteria. A preliminary study of the structure-activity relationship (SAR) also revealed that the antimicrobial activity depended on the substituents on the phenyl ring. The electron withdrawing Cl-substitued compound 3 most favour for antimicrobial activity even at lowest concentration compared to other compounds. DNA-cleavage activities of the compounds were also investigated. The interactions of the compounds with supercoiled pBR322 plasmid DNA were obtained by agarose gel electrophoresis. All imidazo-phenanthroline derivatives were found to be highly effective on DNA, even at the lowest concentrations because of their planar nature which provides ease of bind to the helix structure of DNA.

Abstract
Two new coordination solids [Cu2(μ2-Bz)4(CH3OH)2][Cu2(η2-Bz)2(phen)2(H2O)2]·(NO3)2 (1) and [Cu(phen)(H2O)(Bz)(η2-Bz)] (2) (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline; Bz = benzoate) have been synthesized and characterized using elemental analysis, TGA, spectroscopic (IR, UV-vis-NIR and ESR) and single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. Change of the solvent from methanol to DMF results in changes in the architectures that are triggered by a change from square pyramidal to octahedral coordination at the divalent metal centers for complexes 1 and 2 respectively. The structural topology of the complexes is established by the interplay of strong O-H⋯O and weak C-H⋯O, C-H⋯C, π-π stacking interactions. Unconventional parallel intramolecular and anti-parallel intermolecular contacts involving the chelate rings (CR) also stabilize the structures. The energetic analyses of the structures evidence that the parallel arrangement is energetically favoured which is likely due to the presence of the Cu⋯Cu cuprophilic interaction in 1 that is not established in 2. Compound 1 exhibits the highest antibacterial activity against Rhizobium leguminosarum among the tested cultures. In vitro cytotoxicity and apoptosis studies were carried out for compounds 1 and 2 on malignant Dalton's lymphoma cell line (DL). Both compounds showed a significant effect on the decrease in cell viability as compared to a control, while compound 2 induced remarkable cytotoxicity towards DL cells. Treatment also showed the appearance of membrane blebbing, chromatin condensation and fragmented nuclei which are typical characteristic features of apoptotic cell death. Furthermore, a docking study revealed that both compounds docked in the active sites of all the cancer target proteins under study. Moreover, SAR analysis revealed that oxygen and nitrogen atoms of compound 1 and the oxygen atoms of compound 2 are crucial for biological activities.

Abstract
Nowadays, chemotherapy is a common means of oncology. However, it is difficult to find excellent chemotherapy drugs. Here we reported three new ternary copper(II) complexes which have potential chemotherapy characteristics with reduced Schiff base ligand and heterocyclic bases (TBHP), [Cu(phen)(TBHP)]H2O (1), [Cu(dpz)(TBHP)]H2O (2) and [Cu(dppz)(TBHP)]H2O (3) (phen=1,10-phenanthroline, dpz=dipyrido [3,2:2',3'-f]quinoxaline, dppz=dipyrido [3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine, H2TBHP=2-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzylamino)-2-benzyl-acetic acid). The DNA-binding properties of the complexes were investigated by spectrometric titrations, ethidium bromide displacement experiments and viscosity measurements. The results indicated that the three complexes, especially the complex 13, can strongly bind to calf-thymus DNA (CT-DNA). The intrinsic binding constants Kb of the ternary copper(II) complexes with CT-DNA were 1.37×10(5), 1.81×10(5) and 3.21×10(5) for 1, 2 and 3 respectively. Comparative cytotoxic activities of the copper(II) complexes were also determined by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. The results showed that the ternary copper(II) complexes had significant cytotoxic activity against the human lung cancer (A549), human esophageal cancer (Eca109) and human gastric cancer (SGC7901) cell lines. Cell apoptosis were detected by AnnexinV/PI flow cytometry and by Western blotting with the protein expression of p53, Bax and Bcl-2. All the three copper complexes can effectively induce apoptosis of the three human tumor cells.
