Synthesis, spectroscopic characterizations, cyclic voltammetry investigation and molecular structure of the high-spin manganese(III) trichloroacetato meso -tetraphenylporphyrin and meso -tetra-( para -bromophenyl)porphyrin complexes

Axial Coordinated Manganese(III) Porphyrin/Tetraazaporphyrin - 4-(10-phenylanthracen-9-yl)Pyridine Dyads: Self-Assembly, Structure and Spectral Properties in Ground and Excited States

Self-assembly of new donor-acceptor systems based on (5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphinato)manganese(III)/(5,10,15,20-tetra-4-tert-butylphenylporphinato)manganese(III)/(octakis(4-tert-butylphenyl)tetraazaporphinato)manganese(III) acetate ((AcO)MnTPP/(AcO)MnTBPP/(AcO)MnTAP) and 4-(10-phenylanthracen-9-yl)pyridine (PyAn) was studied using fluorescence spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. It was found that the coordination complexes of 1 : 1 composition (dyads) are formed in toluene. The spectral properties, the chemical structures and redox behavior of the dyads were described using 1H NMR, IR, ESR spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry, respectively. The dynamic processes and the characteristics in the excited state of the dyads were obtained using the femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy method. Density functional theory (DFT), time-dependent DFT methods were used to elucidate the dyad electronic structures and to establish the differences in their frontier molecular orbitals. The analysis of the lambda parameter and the distance of hole-pair interaction was indicated more favorable charge transfer between the macrocycle and the axial PyAn fragment in (AcO)(PyAn)MnTAP. The calculated values of the zero-field splitting parameters D and E/D, together with the g tensors of the lowest spin-orbit state for (AcO)MnTPP and (AcO)(PyAn)MnTPP were obtained using the combination of DFT and Multireference Perturbation Theory (CASSCF/NEVPT2) simulations. The data obtained develop the fundamental basis in the field of photovoltaics and show the prospects for the study of molecular systems of this class.

Fluorinated Mn(III)/(II)-Porphyrin with Redox-Responsive 1 H and 19 F Relaxation Properties

A new fluorinated manganese porphyrin, (Mn-TPP-p-CF3 ) is reported capable of providing, based on the Mn(III)/Mn(II) equilibrium, dual 1 H relaxivity and 19 F NMR response to redox changes. The physical-chemical characterization of both redox states in DMSO-d6 /H2 O evidenced that the 1 H relaxometric and 19 F NMR properties are appropriate for differential redox MRI detection. The Mn(III)-F distance (dMn-F =9.7-10 Å), as assessed by DFT calculations, is well tailored to allow for adequate paramagnetic effect of Mn(III) on 19 F T1 and T2 relaxation times. Mn-TPP-p-CF3 has a reversible Mn(II)/Mn(III) redox potential of 0.574 V vs. NHE in deoxygenated aqueous HEPES/ THF solution. The reduction of Mn(III)-TPP-p-CF3 in the presence of ascorbic acid is slowly, but fully reversed in the presence of air oxygen, as monitored by UV-Vis spectrometry and 19 F NMR. The broad 1 H and 19 F NMR signals of Mn(III)-TPP-p-CF3 disappear in the presence of 1 equivalent ascorbate replaced by a shifted and broadened 19 F NMR signal from Mn(II)-TPP-p-CF3 . Phantom 19 F MR images in DMSO show a MRI signal intensity decrease upon reduction of Mn(III)-TPP-p-CF3 , retrieved upon complete reoxidation in air within ~24 h. 1 H NMRD curves of the Mn(III)/(II)-TPP-p-CF3 chelates in mixed DMSO/water solvent have the typical shape of Mn(II)/Mn(III) porphyrins.

Photophysical characterization and in vitro anti-leishmanial effect of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-fluorophenyl) porphyrin and the metal (Zn(II), Sn(IV), Mn(III) and V(IV)) derivatives

In this report 5 compounds were synthesized and structural and their photophysical characterization was performed (Φ_Δ and Φ_f). Furthermore, in this in vitro study, their biological activity against Leishmania panamensis was evaluated. The photophysical behavior of these compounds was measured and high Φ_Δ and low Φ_f was observed. Besides, DFT quantum calculations on the electronic structures were performed. Finally, the biological activity was determined by means of the compounds capacity to inhibit the viability of parasites using the MTT assay. The inclusion of the metal ions substantially modified the photophysical and biological properties in comparison with the free metal porphyrin (1). In fact, Zn²⁺ porphyrin derivative (2) showed a marked decrease of Φ_f and increase of Φ_Δ. In this sense, using TDDFT approaches, a luminescent process for Sn⁴⁺ derivative (3) was described, where emissive states involve the ML-LCT transition. So, this led to a decrease in the singlet oxygen production (0.82-0.67). Biological results showed that all compounds inhibit the viability of L. panamensis with high efficiency; the decrease in the viability was greater as the concentration of exposure increased. Finally, under light irradiation the IC₅₀ of L. panamensis against the Zn(II)-porphyrin (2) and V(IV)-porphyrin (5) was lower than the IC₅₀ of the Glucantime control (IC₅₀ = 2.2 and 6.95 μM Vs IC₅₀ = 12.7 μM, respectively). We showed that the use of porphyrin and metalloporphyrin-type photosensitizers with exceptional photophysical properties can be successful in photodynamic therapy (PDT) against L. panamensis, being the diamagnetic ion Zn²⁺ a candidate for the preparation of metalloporphyrins with high singlet oxygen production.

Synthesis of 5,15-meso-bis(2-chlorothiophen-3-yl)porphyrin as a building block for further functional materials

A Suzuki–Miyaura coupling reaction was performed to synthesize 5,15-meso-bis(2-chlorothiophen-3-yl)porphyrins in order to obtain a building block for further functional porphyrins. Photophysical and electrochemical properties were investigated to understand the effect of 2-chloro substituted thiophenes which are connected at their 3-position to the meso-position of the porphyrin. A computational calculation with counterpoise method was demonstrated to estimate the relative intermolecular interaction in order to compare solubility. Installed chloro atoms at the 2-position of thiophen-3-yl decreased in intermolecular interaction which caused an increase in solubility.

Reduction of peroxynitrite by some manganoporphyrins of AEOL series: DFT approach with dispersion correction and NBO analysis

The AEOL series of manganoporphyrins (MnP; AEOL compounds were named by US Aeolus pharmaceuticals) designed as superoxide dismutase mimic are well-known for their powerful catalytic activity to neutralize reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. Reductive oxygen atom cleavage from peroxynitrite (ONOO^-) to form NO₂ in aqueous solution by some AEOL compounds (AEOL-10113, AEOL-10150, AEOL-11114 and AEOL-11203) was studied by DFT/M06-2X computations with D3 dispersion correction and gCP (geometrical counterpoise correction) for basis set superposition error. DFT computation showed that AEOL-10150 can form the most stable association complex {MnP^…OONO} among four AEOL models. AEOL-10150 complex with ONOO^- has the lowest deformation energy. In AEOL compounds and their association complexes with ONOO^-, Mn atom prefered the high spin state (S = 2) to the intermediate spin state (S = 1). Natural bond orbital analysis showed that electron transfer from the most negative oxygen atom in ONOO^- to Mn atom in MnP has the biggest interaction energy among all kinds of donor-acceptor interactions between ONOO^- and MnP.

Effect of the coordination of π-acceptor 4-cyanopyridine ligand on the structural and electronic properties ofmeso-tetra(para-methoxy) andmeso-tetra(para-chlorophenyl) porphyrin cobalt(ii) coordination compounds. Application in the catalytic degradation of methylene blue dye

To examine the influence of both the important π-acceptor character of the 4-cyanopyridine ligand and the nature of the para-substituted phenyls of meso-porphyrins on the electronic, electrochemical and structural properties of cobaltous metalloporphyrins, we prepared and fully characterized two coordination compounds: the (4-cyanopyridine)[meso-tetra(para-methoxyphenyl)porphyrinato]cobalt(ii) and the (4-cyanopyridine)[meso-tetra(para-chlorophenyl)porphyrinato]cobalt(ii) with the [Co^II(TMPP)(4-CNpy)] and [Co^II(TClPP)(4-CNpy)] formulas (complexes 1–2). The solution structures of compounds 1–2 were confirmed by ¹H NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry methods. They were further characterized by cyclic voltammetry and photoluminescence studies. The X-ray molecular structure data show that the Co-TClPP-4-NCpy derivative (2) exhibits high ruffling deformation compared to that of the Co-TMPP-4-CNpy species (1). Notably, the crystal packing of complex 1 shows the formation of Co⋯Co supramolecular dimers with a distance of 5.663 Å. As an application of our two cobaltous compounds, an investigation involving complexes 1–2 in the degradation of the methylene blue dye in the presence and absence of H₂O₂ in aqueous solutions was carried out. These promising results show that 1–2 can be used as catalysts in the degradation processes of dyes.

Electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical characterization of Cu(II) and Mn(III) tetrabutano- and tetrabenzoporphyrins containing sterically hindered meso -(2,6-difluorophenyl) substituents in nonaqueous media

Four tetrabutano and tetrabenzoporphyrins containing sterically hindered meso-(2,6-difluorophenyl) substituents and copper(II) or manganese(III) central metal ions were synthesized and characterized as to their electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical properties in nonaqueous media. The copper(II) derivatives exhibit the expected two one-electron reductions to give [Formula: see text]-anion radicals and dianions in CH2Cl2. Electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical data suggest that a Cu(II) phlorin anion is generated from the doubly reduced Cu(II) butanoporphyrin and it is this species which undergoes the third reduction in pyridine. The first one-electron reduction of the Mn(III) porphyrins is metal-centered to give a Mn(II) compound, while the second and third reductions are macrocycle-centered to give Mn(II) porphyrin [Formula: see text]-anion radicals and dianions in both CH2Cl2 and pyridine. A Mn(II) phlorin anion is also generated from the Mn(II) dianion on the spectroelectrochemical timescale under the given solution conditions. The [Formula: see text],[Formula: see text]-butano and benzo groups have a significant effect on the measured redox potentials. Steric hindrance of the meso-(2,6-difluorophenyl) substituents also has an effect on the potential separation between the first two oxidations of the benzoporphyrins.

Spectral, Electrochemical, and ESR Characterization of Manganese Tetraarylporphyrins Containing Four β,β'-Pyrrole Fused Butano and Benzo Groups in Nonaqueous Media

Two series of β,β'-pyrrole butano- and benzo-substituted mangenese(III) tetraarylporphyrins were synthesized and characterized with regard to their spectral and electrochemical properties. The investigated compounds have the general formula butano(Ar)₄PorMnCl and benzo(Ar)₄PorMnCl, where Por is the dianion of the porphyrin and Ar is a p-CH₃Ph, Ph or p-ClPh group on each of the four meso-positions of the macrocycle. Each manganese(III) butano- or benzoporphyrin was examined in CH₂Cl₂ and/or pyridine containing 0.1 M tetra- n-butylammonium perchlorate and the data then were compared to that of the parent tetraarylporphyrins having the same meso-substituents. Up to four reductions are observed for each compound, the first being metal-centered to generate a Mn(II) porphyrin, and the second and third being porphyrin ring-centered to give a Mn(II) porphyrin π-anion radical and dianion, respectively. The one-electron reduced manganese porphyrins have an ESR spectrum with signals at g_⊥= 5.6-5.8 and g_// = 2.0, indicating a mixture of the four- and five-coordinated Mn(II) complexes in a high-spin state (3d⁵, S = 5/2, I = 5/2). Data from cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry both suggest that formation of the porphyrin dianion is followed by a chemical reaction at the electrode surface to give an electroactive phlorin anion. The effects of solvent and porphyrin substituents on ultraviolet-visible light (UV-vis) spectra, redox potentials, and electron transfer mechanisms are discussed.
