Abstract
Vitrimers, possessing associative covalent adaptable networks, are cross-linked polymers exhibiting malleable (glass-like) feature and recyclable and reprocessable (thermoplastics-like) properties. The dynamic behaviors of vitrimer are dependent on both chain/molecular mobility (glass transition temperature, Tg) and dynamic bond-exchanging reaction rate (topology freezing transition temperature, Tv). This work aims on probing the effect of high Tg on the stress relaxation and physical recyclability of vitrimers, employing a polyimide cross-linked with dynamic ester bonds (Tg: 310 °C) as the example. Due to its high Tg and chain rigidity, the cross-linked polyimide does not exhibit a high extent of stress relaxation behavior at 320 °C (10 °C above its Tg), even though the temperature is much higher than the hypothetical Tv. While raising the processing temperature to 345 °C, the cross-linked polyimide exhibits a stress relaxation time of about 3300 s and physical malleability. Nevertheless, side reactions may occur in the recycling and reprocessing process under the harsh condition (high temperature and high pressure) to alter the thermal properties of the recycled sample. The diffusion control plays a critical role on the topography transition of a vitrimer having a high Tg. The Tg ceiling is noticeable for developments of vitrimers.

Abstract
This paper presents a study of the flammability and thermal decomposition products of glass fiber-reinforced epoxy resin (GFRER) with the addition of cardanol-based phosphorus-containing benzoxazine monomer (CBz) and graphene and their combinations in different proportions (up to 20 wt.%). The addition of CBz alone or in combination with graphene resulted in an increase in the limiting oxygen index (LOI) and self-extinguishing in the UL-94 HB test. The flame-retardant samples had better tensile mechanical properties than the sample without additives. The differential mass-spectrometric thermal analysis (DMSTA) of the thermal decomposition products of GFRER without additives and with the addition of CBz and graphene was carried out. CBz addition promoted the thermal decomposition of high-molecular-weight products of epoxy resin decomposition in the condensed phase and at the same time decreased the time of release of low-molecular-weight thermal decomposition products into the gas phase. Graphene addition resulted in an increase in the relative intensities of high-molecular-mass peaks compared to GFRER without additives.

Abstract
To alleviate the safety hazards associated with the use of epoxy resin (EP), a multifunctional filler was designed. This study firstly combines the superior mechanical properties of magnesium borate rods (MBR) with the excellent smoke suppression and flame-retardant characteristics of layered double hydroxide (LDH). H2PO4- intercalated LDH (LDHP) was coated on the MBR surface to obtain inorganic composite particles MBR@LDHP. Subsequently, MBR@LDHP was modified with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APES) to obtain organic-inorganic composite particles MBR@LDHP-APES. Eventually, the hybrid particles were added to EP to prepare the composite materials. Thereafter, the morphology, composition, and structure of MBR@LDHP-APES were characterized utilizing scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results indicated the successful preparation of MBR@LDHP-APES, after which we investigated the effects of MBR@LDHP-APES on the smoke suppression, flame retardancy, and mechanical characteristics of EP. As observed, the EP composites containing 7.5 wt% MBR@LDHP-APES exhibited superior smoke suppression and flame retardancy abilities. The limiting oxygen index reached 33.5%, which is 36.73% greater than pure EP, and the lowest values of total heat and smoke release were observed for the composite materials. In addition, the mechanical properties test revealed that MBR@LDHP-APES considerably enhanced the tensile strength as well as the flexural strength of the composites. Furthermore, mechanistic studies suggested that the barrier effect of MBR, endothermic decomposition of LDHP, and the synergistic effect of LDHP and APES contributed essentially to the smoke suppression and flame-retardant properties of the material. The findings of this research point to a potential method for enhancing the EP's ability to suppress smoke and flames while enhancing its mechanical properties.

Abstract
Despite many important industrial applications, epoxy resin (EP) suffers from high flammability and toxicity emission, extremely hampering their applications. To circumvent the problem, core-shell structured ZIF67@ZIF8 is successfully synthesized and further functionalized with phytic acid (PA) to obtain PA-ZIF67@ZIF8 hybrids. Then, it is used as an efficient flame retardant to reduce the fire risk of EP. The fire test results show a significant reduction in heat and smoke production. Compared with EP, incorporating 5.0 wt % PA-ZIF67@ZIF8 into EP, the peak heat release rate, total heat release, and peak carbon monoxide production are dramatically reduced by 42.2, 33.0, and 41.5%, respectively. Moreover, the EP/PA-ZIF67@ZIF8 composites achieve the UL-94 V-0 rating and the limiting oxygen index increases by 29.3%. These superior fire safety properties are mainly attributed to the excellent dispersion and the catalytic effect of metal oxide and phosphorus-containing compounds. This work provides an efficient strategy for preparing a promising ZIF-based flame retardant for enhancing flame retardancy and smoke toxicity suppression of EP.

Abstract
Abstract
A polyphosphonate (PDPA) flame retardant that contains phenyl phosphonic dichloride and 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide groups, has been synthesized. The flame retardant was introduced into epoxy resins (EP) and cured by 4,4’-diamino diphenylmethane. The vertical burning, limited-oxygen index and cone calorimeter tests reveal that the PDPA can enhance the flame-retardant properties of the EP significantly. With only a 4 wt% PDPA loading, the EP composites achieved a limited-oxygen index value of 33.4% and a V-0 rating in the vertical burning test, and the peak heat release rate and total heat release were decreased by 40.9% and 24.6%, respectively. The thermal properties and gas pyrolysis products of the EP composites were evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis and thermogravimetric analysis-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and the morphology and structure of residual char were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Flourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. To explain the combined effects of the condensed and gas phases, modes of the flame-retardant action are proposed.

Abstract
A new strategy for the preparation of an integrated three-source intumescent flame retardant (IFR) has been developed to improve the flame-retardant and smoke suppression performance of epoxy resin (EP) with a synergistic flame retardant effect. Herein, the synthesis of a macromolecular spirocyclic phosphorus/nitrogen-containing IFR poly sulfonamide spirocyclic pentaerythritol bisphosphonate (SAPC) is reported via a two-step method that uses pentaerythritol, phosphorus oxychloride and sulfonamide (SAA) as raw materials. Subsequently, the SAPC was incorporated into EP to prepare the composite to investigate its thermal stability, flame retardancy, and smoke suppression performance. Herein, a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis showed that the addition of SAPC increased the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the composite. Cone test results indicated that the incorporation of 8 wt % SAPC significantly improved the flame-retardant performance for the composite, with a 43.45% decrease in peak of heat release rate, a 28.55% reduction in total heat release, and a 30.04% decrease in total smoke release. Additionally, the composite received the V-0 rating in a UL-94 vertical burning test, accompanied by the “blowout” phenomenon. After the addition of SAPC, the amount of flammable gas products from the EP composite decomposition was obviously suppressed, and the amount of non-flammable as was increased. All of this suggests a good dilution role of SAPC. There are enough reasons to believe that the enhanced flame-retardant and toxicity suppression performance for the EP composite can be attributed to the good coordination of carbonization agent, acid source, and blowing agent in the SAPC structure.

Abstract
Nowadays, epoxy composites are elements of engineering materials and systems. Although they are known as versatile materials, epoxy resins suffer from high flammability. In this sense, flame retardancy analysis has been recognized as an undeniable requirement for developing future generations of epoxy-based systems. A considerable proportion of the literature on epoxy composites has been devoted to the use of phosphorus-based additives. Nevertheless, innovative flame retardants have coincidentally been under investigation to meet market requirements. This review paper attempts to give an overview of the research on flame retardant epoxy composites by classification of literature in terms of phosphorus (P), non-phosphorus (NP), and combinations of P/NP additives. A comprehensive set of data on cone calorimetry measurements applied on P-, NP-, and P/NP-incorporated epoxy systems was collected and treated. The performance of epoxy composites was qualitatively discussed as Poor, Good, and Excellent cases identified and distinguished by the use of the universal Flame Retardancy Index (FRI). Moreover, evaluations were rechecked by considering the UL-94 test data in four groups as V0, V1, V2, and nonrated (NR). The dimensionless FRI allowed for comparison between flame retardancy performances of epoxy composites. The results of this survey can pave the way for future innovations in developing flame-retardant additives for epoxy.

Abstract
The flame retardant modification of epoxy (EP) is of great signification for aerospace, automotive, marine, and energy industries. In this study, a series of EP composites containing different variations of phosphorus-containing polysulfone (with a phosphorus content of approximately 1.25 wt %) were obtained. The obtained EP/polysulfone composites had a high glass transition temperature (Tg) and high flame retardancy. The influence of phosphorus-containing compounds (ArPN₂, ArPO₂, ArOPN₂ and ArOPO₂) on the thermal properties and flame retardancy of EP/polysulfone composites was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), a UL-94 vertical burning test, and cone calorimeter tests. The phosphorus-containing polysulfone enhanced the thermal stability of EP. The more stable porous char layer, less flammable gases, and a lower apparent activation energy at a high degree of conversion demonstrated the high gas inhibition effect of phosphorus-containing compounds. Moreover, the gas inhibition effect of polysulfone with a P⁻C bond was more efficient than the polysulfone with a P⁻O⁻C bond. The potential for optimizing flame retardancy while maintaining a high Tg is highlighted in this study. The flame-retardant EP/polysulfone composites with high thermal stability broaden the application field of epoxy.

Abstract
Alginates (nickel alginate, NiA; copper alginate, CuA; zinc alginate, ZnA) and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) were alternately deposited on a magnesium hydroxide (MH) surface by the spray-drying-assisted layer-by-layer assembly technique, fabricating some efficient and environmentally benign flame retardants (M-FR, including Ni-FR, Cu-FR, and Zn-FR). The morphology, chemical compositions, and structures of M-FR were investigated. With 50 wt % loading, compared with EVA28+MH, the peak heat release rate, smoke production rate, and CO production rate of EVA28+Ni-FR decreased by 50.78%, 61.76%, and 66.67%, respectively. The metals or metal oxide nanoparticles arising from alginates could catalyze the pyrolysis intermediates of EVA into graphene and amorphous carbon, which could bind the inorganic compounds (the decomposition products of MH and APTES) together and form some more protective barriers. For each M-FR, the flame retardant and smoke suppression efficiency were different, which were caused by the diverse carbonization and graphitization behaviors of three alginates. ZnA generated some ZnO aggregations and could not catalyze the graphitization of intermediates. For CuA, the catalytic graphitization was limited by the tightly binding graphene layer. As for NiA, the configuration of the Ni atom could not provide strong binding of Ni substrate and carbon. The liquid-like Ni nanoparticles could restructure and get out from firm graphene shells, so the catalytic graphitization of NiA was efficient and sustainable. This work displayed the catalytic graphitization mechanism of alginates while exploring a simple and novel strategy for fabricating efficient green flame retardants.

JOURNAL OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS 2018; 343:364-375. Abstract
The co-precipitation method was used to synthesize a hybrid with MgAl-layered double hydroxide loaded graphene (RGO-LDH). CuMoO4 was then introduced onto the surface of RGO-LDH to prepare a hybrid with CuMoO4 modified RGO-LDH (RGO-LDH/CuMoO4). The composition, structure and morphology of RGO-LDH/CuMoO4 were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Laser raman spectroscopy and Transmission electron microscope-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. It was found that the hybrid of RGO-LDH/CuMoO4 had been successfully prepared. The effects of flame retardancy and smoke suppression of epoxy resin were studied with added RGO-LDH/CuMoO4. Results showed that the PHRR and THR of the EP composite with RGO-LDH/CuMoO4 added were decreased dramatically. The char yield, LOI and UL-94 vertical burning rating of the EP composite were increased, with improved flame ratardancy. In addition, the SPR, TSP, and Ds,max of the EP composite were decreased drastically with added RGO-LDH/CuMoO4. Its improved flame retardancy and smoke suppression performance were due mainly to the physical barrier of graphene and LDH, and the catalytic carbonization function of LDH. Meanwhile, Cu2O and MoO3 generated from RGO-LDH/CuMoO4 in the combustion process helped enhance the production of char residue and raised the compactness of the char layer.

Abstract
Epoxy resin (EP) composites with improved thermal resistance were fabricated. To solve the problem of low thermal resistance derived from phosphazene flame-retardant additives, we designed a system based on flame-retardant microcapsules P(H), with hexaphenoxycyclotriphosphazene as the core and polymethyl methacrylate as the shell. The core–shell structure was characterized and confirmed. The thermal resistance of the cured EP composites containing 1 wt% P(H) microcapsules was improved because of the increased glass transition temperatures. The P(2.75H)/EP composites can reach a limited oxygen index of 30.5% and V-1 rating in UL-94 tests. Heat and gas release rates were reduced during combustion tests. Residual images implied that the P(H) microcapsules may promote the formation of a flame-retardant char layer. Pyrolysis analysis demonstrated that the P(H) microcapsules can decompose in two procedures to produce flame-retardant gas components. Therefore, the flame-retardant mechanism involved the flame inhibition effect in the gas phase, and the charring effect in the condensed phase. Epoxy resin composites with improved thermal resistance and flame retardancy were fabricated based on P(H) microcapsules.![]()

Abstract
In this work, sandwich-like structured CoAl-LDH@ZIF-67 hybrids were constructed by in situ growth of nanosized ZIF-67 crystallites on CoAl-LDH nanoplates. The structure and morphology of CoAl-LDH@ZIF-67 hybrids were represented by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Accordingly, the hybrids were introduced into epoxy resins to explore their effect on the thermal and fire safety properties of epoxy composites. With the introduction of 2% CoAl-LDH@ZIF-67 hybrids, the T10%, T50% and Tmax values were decreased to some extent and the char residue yield was higher than that of pristine epoxy. The peak heat release rate (PHRR) of epoxy composites declined by 26.4%, in comparison with those of pure epoxy. Moreover, the quantity of smoke produced, toxic CO released and CO2 produced were suppressed markedly and decreased by 16.7%, 59.8% and 32.2%, respectively. A possible mechanism for improving fire safety was put forward based on the analysis of the carbon residues. In this work, sandwich-like structured CoAl-LDH@ZIF-67 hybrids were constructed by in situ growth of nanosized ZIF-67 crystallites on CoAl-LDH nanoplates.![]()

Abstract
With the aim of developing a novel organic flame retardant, an organic boronic acid derivative containing a triazine ring (2,4,6-tris(4-boronic-2-thiophene)-1,3,5-triazine (3TT-3BA)) was synthesized. The thermal properties of 3TT-3BA and its corresponding intermediate products were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis. The results show that 3TT-3BA has a high char yield (56.9%). The flame retardant properties of epoxy resin (EP) with 3TT-3BA were investigated by cone calorimeter, limiting oxygen index (LOI) test, and vertical burning test (UL 94). The LOI of EP with 20% 3TT-3BA is 31.2% and the UL 94 V-0 rating is achieved for EP with 20% 3TT-3BA. The flame retardant mechanism of 3TT-3BA in EP was investigated using TGA–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy.

Abstract
An efficient and multifunctional brucite/3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES)/nickel alginate/APTES (B/A/Nia/A) hybrid flame retardant was fabricated via the layer-by-layer assembly technique with brucite, silane coupling agents, nickel chloride, and sodium alginate. The morphology, chemical composition, and structure of the hybrid flame retardant were characterized. The results confirmed the multilayer structure and indicated that the assembled driving forces were electrostatic interactions, dehydration condensation, hydrogen bonds, and coordination bonds. When used in ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) resin, the multifunctional flame retardant had better performance than brucite in improving the flame retardancy, smoke suppression, and mechanical properties. With 130 phr loading, the multifunctional flame retardant achieved a limiting oxygen index value of 32.3% and a UL 94 V-0 rating, whereas the brucite achieved only 31.1% and a V-2 rating, respectively. The peak heat release rate and total heat released decreased by 41.5% and 8.9%, respectively. The multifunctional flame retardant had an excellent performance in reducing the smoke, CO, and CO2 production rates. These improvements could be attributed to the catalyzing carbonization of nickel compounds and the formation of more protective char layers. Moreover, the elongation at break increased by 97.5%, which benefited from the improved compatibility and the sacrificial bonds in the nickel alginate. The mechanism of flame retardant, smoke suppression, and toughening is proposed.
