Investigation of Polymer Aging Mechanisms Using Molecular Simulations: A Review

Aging has a serious impact on the properties of functional polymers. Therefore, it is necessary to study the aging mechanism to prolong the service and storage life of polymer-based devices and materials. Due to the limitations of traditional experimental methods, more and more studies have adopted molecular simulations to analyze the intrinsic mechanisms of aging. In this paper, recent advances in molecular simulations of the aging of polymers and their composites are reviewed. The characteristics and applications of commonly used simulation methods in the study of the aging mechanisms (traditional molecular dynamics simulation, quantum mechanics, and reactive molecular dynamics simulation) are outlined. The current simulation research progress of physical aging, aging under mechanical stress, thermal aging, hydrothermal aging, thermo-oxidative aging, electric aging, aging under high-energy particle impact, and radiation aging is introduced in detail. Finally, the current research status of the aging simulations of polymers and their composites is summarized, and the future development trend has been prospected.

A rapid and highly sensitive evaluation of polymer composite aging with linear correlation to real-time aging

Evaluation of polymer aging is very important for the long-term performance of polymer materials, but it remains a challenge to correlate accelerated evaluations with the real-time procedures. Here we develop a novel in-situ aging evaluation system for rapid and sensitive aging evaluations of polymer materials within hours under multiple environmental conditions. It is carried out by in-situ detecting the generation rate of trace gaseous degradation products, e.g. CO₂, of polymer materials in a specially designed reaction cell during aging under environmental conditions with various UV irradiation, temperature and humidity. The advantages of this system were demonstrated by applying to evaluate the photo-oxidation of polypropylene (PP)-CaCO₃ composites, including stability evaluation, aging status analysis, aging kinetics measurements and study on effects of UV irradiation intensity and humidity. The CO₂ generation rate of PP-CaCO₃ composites measured in this system is well correlated to carbonyl indices during 120-day natural weathering. A linear relationship was observed between the generation rate of CO₂ and the natural logarithm of the carbonyl index. The activation energy of the photo-oxidation of PP-CaCO₃ composites was calculated based on generation rates of CO₂ at different temperatures in the range of 30-80 °C. The increase of UV irradiation intensity and humidity both enhanced the generation rate of CO₂ of PP composites, and the presence of CaCO₃ fillers promoted the sensitivity of PP photo-oxidation to both of UV irradiation intensity and humidity. This study provides a new approach to rapid and highly sensitive evaluation of polymer composite aging under multiple environmental conditions.

Flame Retardant Paraffin-Based Shape-Stabilized Phase Change Material via Expandable Graphite-Based Flame-Retardant Coating

Shape-stabilized phase change material (SSPCM) is a promising thermal energy storage material in energy-saving buildings. However, its flammability leads to a fire risk. The conventional bulk addition method has a limited flame-retardant effect. Herein, a series of surface coatings with various flame retardants were introduced to improve flame retardance of SSPCM. The results showed that all of the coatings had flame-retardant effects on SSPCM; In particular, the EG coating performed the best: the horizontal burning time was the longest, the limiting oxygen index was above 30%, the V0 classification was obtained, the peak heat release rate was sharply decreased from 1137.0 to 392.5 kW/m² and the burning process was prolonged with the least total smoke production. The flame-retardant mechanism was discussed. As paraffin easily evaporated from the SSPCM at a moderate temperature, it caused flames. After being surface coated, the EG-based coatings first hindered the volatilization of paraffin at a moderate temperature, then expanded and formed thick porous carbon layers at a high temperature to block the transfer of combustibles, oxygen and heat between the bulk and the environment. Therefore, the surface coating strategy achieved a desirable flame-retardant level with fewer flame retardants.

Lifetime Prediction of Polymers: To Bet, or Not to Bet-Is This the Question?

Polymers are a great and very important category of organic compounds that have changed our lifestyle. In the last eighty years, we have used them for the most varied applications, and from the first structural ones we began to investigate their durability, which can be fatal in the successful completion of the application for which the material was designed. Over the last thirty years, the environmental problems related to the disposal of polymers that have completed their lifecycle have begun to arise, and the need to foresee their end of life has become increasingly urgent. In this manuscript, the reliability of the lifetime predictions of polymeric materials is faced with comparing measurements obtained at low temperature with those carried out at high temperatures, in the molten state. The obtained data were treated by a well-established kinetics model and discrepancies were observed in the two different conditions (high and low temperatures), which led to a mismatching between expected and real data. A correction of the data extrapolated from measurements obtained at high temperatures, by using a novel equation which takes into account the induction period (IP) of the degradation process, is proposed. Considerations about the useful parameters, namely initial decomposition temperature (T_i), activation energy of degradation (E_a), and glass-transition temperature (T_g), to be used for making predictions, are also carried out.
