Kinetic study of complex processes composed of non-independent stages: pyrolysis of natural rubber

Reutilization of Reclaimed Asphalt Binder via Co-Pyrolysis with Rice Husk: Thermal Degradation Behaviors and Kinetic Analysis

Realizing the utilization of reclaimed asphalt binder (RAB) and rice husk (RH) to reduce environmental pollution and expand the reutilization technique of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), co-pyrolysis of RAB with RH has great potential. In this study, the co-pyrolysis behaviors, gaseous products, and kinetics were evaluated using thermogravimetric analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR). The results showed that incorporating RH into RAB improved its pyrolysis characteristics. The interactions between RAB and RH showed initial inhibition followed by subsequent promotion. The primary gaseous products formed during co-pyrolysis were aliphatic hydrocarbons, water, and carbon dioxide, along with smaller amounts of aldehydes and alcohols originating from RH pyrolysis. All average activation energy values for the blends, determined through iso-conversional methods, decreased with RH addition. The combined kinetic analysis revealed two distinct mechanisms: (1) at the lower conversion range, the pyrolysis of the blend followed a random nucleation and three-dimensional growth mechanism, while (2) at the higher conversion range, the control mechanism transitioned into three-dimensional diffusion.

Characterization Techniques of Polymer Aging: From Beginning to End

Polymers have been widely applied in various fields in the daily routines and the manufacturing. Despite the awareness of the aggressive and inevitable aging for the polymers, it still remains a challenge to choose an appropriate characterization strategy for evaluating the aging behaviors. The difficulties lie in the fact that the polymer features from the different aging stages require different characterization methods. In this review, we present an overview of the characterization strategies preferable for the initial, accelerated, and late stages during polymer aging. The optimum strategies have been discussed to characterize the generation of radicals, variation of functional groups, substantial chain scission, formation of low-molecular products, and deterioration in the polymers' macro-performances. In view of the advantages and the limitations of these characterization techniques, their utilization in a strategic approach is considered. In addition, we highlight the structure-property relationship for the aged polymers and provide available guidance for lifetime prediction. This review could allow the readers to be knowledgeable of the features for the polymers in the different aging stages and provide access to choose the optimum characterization techniques. We believe that this review will attract the communities dedicated to materials science and chemistry.

Pyrolysis and Oxidative Thermal Decomposition Investigations of Tennis Ball Rubber Wastes through Kinetic and Thermodynamic Evaluations

Thermal decomposition of tennis ball rubber (TBR) wastes in nitrogen and air has been studied through thermogravimetric analysis. The samples were thermally decomposed from room temperature to 950 K at heating rates of 3 to 20 K/min with a purging flow of 30 cm³/min. The degradation features and specific temperatures for two purging gases are thus compared according to the nonisothermal results. Kinetic analyses of two thermal decomposition processes have been isoconversionally performed using differential or integral methods. The activation energy as a function of mass conversion has been thus obtained over the entire decomposition range, varying from 116.7 to 723.3 kJ/mol for pyrolysis and 98.2 to 383.6 kJ/mol for oxidative thermal decomposition. The iterative Flynn-Wall-Ozawa method combined with the linear compensation effect relationship has been proposed for determining the pre-exponential factor and reaction mechanism function, resulting in chemical order reaction models of f(α) = (1 - α)^5.7 and f(α) = (1 - α)^5.8 for describing pyrolysis and the oxidative thermal degradation of TBR wastes, respectively. With these kinetic parameters, very satisfactory matching against experimental data has been obtained for both gases. Additionally, the thermodynamic parameters, such as the changes of entropy, enthalpy and Gibbs free energy, over the whole thermal degradation processes have also been evaluated.

Biotechnological Aspects and Mathematical Modeling of the Biodegradation of Plastics under Controlled Conditions

The strong environmental impact caused by plastic pollution has led research to address studies from different perspectives. The mathematical modeling of the biodegradation kinetics of solid materials is a major challenge since there are many influential variables in the process and there is interdependence of microorganisms with internal and external factors. In addition, as solid substrates that are highly hydrophobic, mass transfer limitations condition degradation rates. Some mathematical models have been postulated in order to understand the biodegradation of plastics in natural environments such as oceans. However, if tangible and optimizable solutions are to be found, it is necessary to study the biodegradation process under controlled conditions, such as using bioreactors and composting systems. This review summarizes the biochemical fundamentals of the main plastics (both petrochemical and biological origins) involved in biodegradation processes and combines them with the main mathematical equations and models proposed to date. The different biodegradation studies of plastics under controlled conditions are addressed, analyzing the influencing factors, assumptions, model developments, and correlations with laboratory-scale results. It is hoped that this review will provide a comprehensive overview of the process and will serve as a reference for future studies, combining practical experimental work and bioprocess modeling systems.
