Synthesis, characterization and optical properties of cross-linkable poly(phthalazinone ether ketone sulfone)

Synthesis and properties of bio-based semi-aromatic heat-resistant copolymer polyamide 5T-co-6T

Herein, poly(pentanediamine terephthalamide) (PA5T) homopolymer was synthesized via a salt-forming reaction+solid state polycondensation method using bio-based 1,5-pentanediamine and terephthalic acid as the primary raw materials. To address the issue of its narrower processing window, poly(hexamethylene terephthalamide)(PA6T), which also cannot be melt processed due to the processing window is negative, was introduced into its molecular chain to synthesize poly (pentanediamine/hexanediamine terephthaloyl) (PA5T-co-6T) copolymers. The structures were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance carbon spectroscopy (13C-NMR). Furthermore, the melting temperature, crystallization temperature, thermal stability, and crystal growth mode of the polymer were tested and analyzed using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and wide-angle x-ray diffraction (WAXD), respectively. The results demonstrate that the crystal growth mode gradually changes from three-dimensional spherical growth to two-dimensional disk-like or three-dimensional spherical growth with the increase of 6T chain segment content. Simultaneously, the crystallization temperature, melting temperature, and crystallization rate of the polymer all showed a trend of decreasing first and then increasing, which was due to the combined effects of the increase in the content of 6T chain segments on the molecular-chain structure and crystal structure of the polymer. Bio-based PA5T-co-6T has excellent heat resistance and a wider processing window than PA5T and PA6T, which possesses great application prospects in the fields of automotive, electronic appliances, and LED optics.

Study of the Effects of the Structure of Phthalazinone’s Side-Group on the Properties of the Poly(phthalazinone ether ketone)s Resins

The application of poly(phthalazinone ether ketone)s (PPEKs) resin containing phthalazinone moiety is limited, due to its poor thermoforming processability. To investigate the effects of the phthalazinone’s side-group on the thermal stability and processability of the resin, a series of PPEKs resins with different side-group (–H/–CH₃/–Ph) were prepared by nucleophilic aromatic substitution polymerization. The properties of the obtained resins were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry analysis (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), dynamic thermomechanical analysis (DMA), and rheogoniometer. The results show that the introduction of methyl or phenyl into the PPEKs resin, significantly reduced the melting viscosity of the resin, but resulted in a slight decrease in the thermal stability of it. This might be due to the presence of methyl or phenyl, which enhanced the free volume of the molecule and reduced the entanglement between the chains; the results of the computer simulation confirmed it. Moreover, the resin films displayed excellent tensile strength with the introduction of methyl or phenyl. In a word, a novel poly(phthalazinone ether ketone)s resin with thermal resistance, easy processing and excellent mechanical properties could be obtained by introducing appropriate bulk-rigid side-groups into the phthalazinone moiety.

PPESK-Modified Multi-Functional Epoxy Resin and Its Application to the Pultrusion of Carbon Fiber

Multi-functional epoxy resins are generally brittle due to their high crosslinking densities, which can limit their use for applications that require impact resistance. Pultruded poly(phthalazinone ether sulfone ketone) (PPESK)-modified epoxy resins were prepared and their curing behaviors, heat resistance properties, and viscosity changes investigated. The glass transition temperature of these resins was found to increase with increasing PPESK content; however, these values were still compatible with the pultrusion process. Little change in the tensile strength and elongation lengths at breaking point were observed for blended PPESK/multi-functional epoxy resin containing 4⁻6% PPESK, and its viscosity levels were still within the requirements of the pultrusion process. Carbon fiber/multi-functional epoxy resin/PPESK (CF/E/PPESK) composites were also prepared and their performance investigated. The bending radius of these PPSEK-modified composites could reach up to 55 D with no cracking or peeling observed in their surface layers. The fatigue frequency of the sinusoidal waveforms for the composite did not change after one million fatigue test cycles, meaning that a strength retention rate of >90% was achieved. Therefore, this study describes a powerful approach for preparing toughened multi-functional epoxy resins that are well suited to pultrusion processes.

Preparation of Novel Epoxy Resins Bearing Phthalazinone Moiety and Their Application as High-Temperature Adhesives

Most polymer-based adhesives exhibit some degree of degradation at temperatures above 200 °C, and so there is a need for the development of adhesives that can be used at high temperatures. A series of poly(phthalazinone ether nitrile sulfone ketone)s terminated with epoxy (E-PPENSK) and amine (A-PPENSK) groups have been prepared, which have been used as precursors can be applied for high-temperature resistant epoxy adhesives. The structured of these E-PPENSK (epoxy resin) and A-PPENSK (curing agent) components have been characterized by ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform⁻infrared spectroscopy (FT⁻IR) studies, with the effects of molecular weights and molar ratios on the gel content of their polymers being determined. Cured epoxy resins derived from E-PPENSK and A-PPENSK showed good thermal stability, with an optimal resin retaining 95% of its weight at 484 °C, which gave a char yield of 62%. This adhesive was found to exhibit good mechanical strength, with a single-lap adhesive joint (A-3000/E-6000) exhibiting a shear strength of 48.7 MPa. Heating this adhesive at 450 °C for 1 h afforded a polymer that still exhibited good shear strength of 17.8 MPa, indicating that these adhesives are potentially good candidates for high-temperature applications.
