Abstract
Metal nanoparticles (NPs) are widely used in biomedicine, catalysis, environment, electronics, and other fields, which is closely related to its structural form. For this purpose, researchers have been looking for a simple, green, and controllable way to mass produce metal nanomaterials with desired characteristics (shape, size, stability, etc.). Due to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of metal nanoparticles, photoreduction method can control the morphology of metal nanoparticles well, which is also simple, large-scalable, and energy-saving. This review provides an overview of the photoreduction method for the synthesis of metal nanoparticles and discusses the factors such as the light source, pH value, reagents, and temperature on the morphology of the nanoparticles. Finally, the challenges and development trends in the controlled preparation of nanomaterials are proposed.

Abstract
The copper II complex (HLCuCl) carrying 2,4 dinitrophenylhydrazone (L) is synthesized and evaluated as a new photoredox catalyst/photoinitiator in combination with triethylamine (TEA) and iodonium salt (Iod) for the radical polymerization of ethylene glycol diacrylate during exposure to visible light using a photoreactor at 419 nm. The copper complex reactivity with TEA/Iod salt/gold chloride showed a good production and stability of gold nanoparticles. Finally, the high performance of Cu (II) complex for radical photopolymerization incorporating gold nanoparticles is provided. The photochemical mechanisms for the production of initiating radicals are studied using cyclic voltammetry. Polymer nanocomposites containing gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) in situ photogenerated during the irradiation process were prepared. The formation of Au NPs inside the polymer matrix was through UV-Vis and EDS/SEM analyses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND High-speed atomic force microscopy (HS-AFM) has successfully visualized a variety of protein molecules during their functional activity. However, it cannot visualize small molecules interacting with proteins and even protein molecules when they are encapsulated. Thus, it has been desired to achieve techniques enabling simultaneous optical/AFM imaging at high spatiotemporal resolution with high correlation accuracy. METHODS Scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) is a candidate for the combination with HS-AFM. However, the imaging rate of SNOM has been far below that of HS-AFM. We here developed HS-SNOM and metal tip-enhanced total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy (TIRFM) by exploiting tip-scan HS-AFM and exploring methods to fabricate a metallic tip on a tiny HS-AFM cantilever. RESULTS In tip-enhanced TIRFM/HS-AFM, simultaneous video recording of the two modalities of images was demonstrated in the presence of fluorescent molecules in the bulk solution at relatively high concentration. By using fabricated metal-tip cantilevers together with our tip-scan HS-AFM setup equipped with SNOM optics, we could perform simultaneous HS-SNOM/HS-AFM imaging, with correlation analysis between the two overlaid images being facilitated. CONCLUSIONS This study materialized simultaneous tip-enhanced TIRFM/HS-AFM and HS-SNOM/HS-AFM imaging at high spatiotemporal resolution. Although some issues remain to be solved in the future, these correlative microscopy methods have a potential to increase the versatility of HS-AFM in biological research. GENERAL SIGNIFICANCE We achieved an imaging rate of ~3 s/frame for SNOM imaging, more than 100-times higher than the typical SNOM imaging rate. We also demonstrated ~39 nm resolution in HS-SNOM imaging of fluorescently labeled DNA in solution.

Abstract
The development of metalized surfaces exhibiting mirror properties and/or electric conductivity without heavy equipments and with low metal charge is a big challenge in view of many industrial applications. We report herein on the photo-assembling of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in a polymer matrix, carried out within minutes from an acrylate monomer and silver nitrate at room temperature, under air and without any solvents. The top surface of the material gets converted into a continuous silver thin film and a depthwise concentration gradient of AgNPs is created in the polymer, which images the absorption profile of the actinic UV light in the reactive formulation. This specific assembling of the silver@polymer coating induces excellent reflective and conductive properties. The conductance was observed to strongly increase with increasing the exposure from 3 to 30 min due to the formation of a more and more compact metal film. This coating strategy works with a variety of substrates (textile, paper, glass, wood, plastic and stainless steel). Moreover, on flexible surfaces such as textile, the flexibility was preserved. The possibility to use this kind of nanomaterial as a printing ink, with a much lower metal concentration (3 to 5 wt.%) than concurrent inks, was also demonstrated.

Abstract
We have developed a facile, efficient, low cost and 'green' photochemical approach to preparing surfactant-free Pd nanoparticles and Pd-immobilized@acrylate photo-polymer films at room temperature, under air and without any additional treatment. The reaction system only includes a photo-initiator used as a generator of free radicals and a Pd(II) salt. In ethanol solution, the photochemical reduction of Pd(II) to Pd(0) generates very small metal particles with a narrow size distribution (2-4 nm). Furthermore, we have shown that the formation of Pd nanoparticles from a Pd(II) salt can be reversible thus allowing easy handling and safe storage with the possibility of generating the nanoparticles just before use. In the presence of an acrylate bifunctional monomer, Pd@polymer film was obtained through a 'one-pot, one-step' process resulting from a simultaneous photo-reduction of Pd(II) and photo-polymerization of acrylate units. The simultaneous generation of a 3D polymer network and of metal particles leads to a homogeneous distribution of Pd nanoparticles in the photo-polymer matrix with an average diameter of approximately 3.7 ± 1.1 nm. Such as-prepared Pd@polymer films were found to efficiently catalyze the Mizoroki-Heck reaction in the presence of only 0.9 mequiv. of supported palladium. The major interest of this arrangement is its recoverability and reusability, which makes it very attractive both from a practical and economical viewpoint. Finally, it is worth noting that this innovation offers a great advantage over concurrent methods in that it is simply generated within minutes, it is highly stable, and there is sharp monodispersity in the size of the Pd nanoparticles that can be stored for months without alteration of their physico-chemical properties and catalytic activity.

Abstract
Photochemical reactions, particularly those involving photoinduced electron transfer processes, establish a substantial contribution to the modern synthetic chemistry, and the polymer community has been increasingly interested in exploiting and developing novel photochemical strategies. These reactions are efficiently utilized in almost every aspect of macromolecular architecture synthesis, involving initiation, control of the reaction kinetics and molecular structures, functionalization, and decoration, etc. Merging with polymerization techniques, photochemistry has opened up new intriguing and powerful avenues for macromolecular synthesis. Construction of various polymers with incredibly complex structures and specific control over the chain topology, as well as providing the opportunity to manipulate the reaction course through spatiotemporal control, are one of the unique abilities of such photochemical reactions. This review paper provides a comprehensive account of the fundamentals and applications of photoinduced electron transfer reactions in polymer synthesis. Besides traditional photopolymerization methods, namely free radical and cationic polymerizations, step-growth polymerizations involving electron transfer processes are included. In addition, controlled radical polymerization and "Click Chemistry" methods have significantly evolved over the last few decades allowing access to narrow molecular weight distributions, efficient regulation of the molecular weight and the monomer sequence and incredibly complex architectures, and polymer modifications and surface patterning are covered. Potential applications including synthesis of block and graft copolymers, polymer-metal nanocomposites, various hybrid materials and bioconjugates, and sequence defined polymers through photoinduced electron transfer reactions are also investigated in detail.

Abstract
The present work reports a strategy involving the preparation of nanostructured starch based film containing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using a completely green chemistry process. The nanocomposite films were prepared by solution cast process. The AgNPs were in situ generated inside the polymer film by thermal treatment at different temperatures (25, 40 and 85 °C). The influence of the presence and the amount of reducing agent (glucose) were also investigated. For all nanocomposite films, the AgNPs were spherical with a diameter less than 15 nm. Contrary to the presence of glucose, thermal treatment condition was a key factor for the AgNPs structure. Crystalline AgNPs were obtained only after thermal treatment at 85 °C. Improvements of water and oxygen barrier properties near to one decade were observed in this last case and were explained by the formation of crystalline AgNPs associated to the establishment of strong interactions between AgNPs and starch polymer matrix.

Abstract
New methods for the preparation of silver nanoparticles/polymer nanocomposite materials by thermal cationic polymerization of ε-caprolactone (ε-CL) or α-pinene oxide (α-PO) at room temperature (RT) and under air were developed. The new initiating systems were based on silanes (Si), starch nanocrystals (StN) and metal salts. Excellent polymerization profiles were revealed. It was shown that silver nanoparticles (Ag(0) NPs) were in situ formed and that the addition of StN improves the polymerization efficiency. The as-synthesized nanocomposite materials contained spherical nanoparticles homogeneously dispersed in the polymer matrices. Polymers and nanoparticles were characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and UV-vis spectroscopy. A coherent picture of the involved chemical mechanisms is presented.

Abstract
The PI/UV system ((4-trimethyl ammonium methyl) benzophenone chloride/UV) was used to synthesize carboxymethyl starch- (CMS-) stabilized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). AgNPs so prepared had round shape morphology with size of 1–7 nm. The prepared AgNPs were utilized to impart antibacterial finishing for cotton fabrics. The PI/UV system was further utilized to fix AgNPs onto cotton fabrics by photocrosslinking of AgNPs-CMS composite onto cotton fabrics to impart durable antibacterial properties. Effect of irradiation time and incorporating N, N-methylene diacrylamide (MDA) in different concentrations on antibacterial performance before and after repeated washing cycles was studied. S. aureus and E. coli were used to evaluate the antibacterial performance of finished fabrics. The antibacterial performance was directly proportional to the irradiation time and concentration of MDA but inversely proportional to the number of washing cycles. The inhibition zone of S. aureus and E. coli is the same although they are different in the cell wall structure and mode of action due to the nanosize structure formed.

Abstract
The water soluble photoinitiator (PI) 4-(trimethyl ammonium methyl) benzophenone chloride is used for the first time in the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). A new green synthesis method involves using PI/UV system, carboxymethyl starch (CMS), silver nitrate, and water. A mechanism of the reduction of silver ions to AgNPs by PI/UV system as well as by the newly born aldehydic groups was proposed. The synthesis process was assessed by UV-vis spectra and TEM of AgNPs colloidal solution. The highest absorbance was obtained using CMS, PI and AgNO3 concentrations of 10 g/L, 1 g/L, and 1 g/L, respectively; 40 °C; 60 min; pH 7; and a material : liquor ratio 1 : 20. AgNPs so-obtained were stable in aqueous solution over a period of three weeks at room temperature (~25 °C) and have round shape morphology. The sizes of synthesized AgNPs were in the range of 1-21 nm and the highest counts % of these particles were for particles of 6-10 and 1-3 nm, respectively.

S. aureus (as G +ve) and E. coli (as G −ve) were used to estimate the antibacterial performance of the finished fabrics. The antibacterial performance was directly proportional to the irradiation time but inversely proportional to the number of washing cycles. However, after the 15th washing cycle, samples still have bacteriostatic effect; that is, although they show zero inhibition zone, they cannot be attacked by the bacterial growth and do not inhibit the bacterial growth. AgNPs finished wool fabrics showed more antibacterial activity than those of AgNPs finished acrylic fabrics.

Abstract
A straightforward and versatile method for immobilizing macromolecules and silver nanoparticles on the surface of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBHV) electrospun fibers is developed with the objective of designing a new functional material having significant antibacterial activity. The approach relies on a two-step procedure: UV photografting of poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) on the surface of PHBHV fibers according to a "grafting from" method, and complexation of in situ photogenerated silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) by carboxyl groups from tethered PMAA chains. The photografting process is conducted through a photoinduced free-radical process employing a ketone-based photoinitiator in aqueous medium. Under appropriate conditions, the photogenerated radicals abstract hydrogen atoms from the PHBHV backbone, thus initiating the UV-mediated photopolymerization of MAA from the PHBHV microfibrous surface. The photochemical mechanism of the ketone photolysis is entirely described by the electron spin resonance/spin-trapping technique, and the modified PHBHV microfibrous scaffold is extensively characterized by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, water contact-angle measurements, and mercury intrusion porosimetry. In a second step, the in situ synthesis of Ag NPs within the microfibrous scaffold is implemented by photoreduction reaction in the presence of both a silver precursor and a photosensitizer. The photoinduced formation of Ag NPs is confirmed by UV spectrophotometry and XPS analysis. SEM and TEM experiments confirm the formation and dispersion of Ag NPs on the surface of the modified fibers. Finally, a primary investigation is conducted to support the antibacterial activity of the new functionalized biomaterial against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.

Abstract
A new type of photoinitiator for free radical polymerization was synthesized and characterized. 2-(11-Mercaptoundecyloxy)thioxanthone (1) was anchored at the surface of silver nanoparticles (NPs), and the interaction of plasmon field generated in the immediate vicinity of Ag NPs carrying the chromophores was evaluated. The optical features and structure of the silver-initiator nanoassemblies (Ag@1) were characterized by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). TEM and XRD studies revealed the presence of ca. 5-6 nm diameter Ag NPs, and XPS also confirmed the successful anchorage of 1 at their periphery. The nanoassemblies Ag@1 were successfully used as macroinitiator for radical polymerization of acrylate monomers, triggered photochemically, to obtain Ag(0)-polyacrylate nanocomposite materials. The nanocomposite materials synthesized with the use of Ag@1 exhibit attractive possibilities for patterning the surface of thin films.

Abstract
A facile method for the preparation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with various morphologies, including triangles, cubes and nanospheres into a urethane methacrylate polymer matrix, has been developed. The hybrid nanocomposites have been obtained by photoreduction of a gold precursor in the presence of a 30 wt% urethane methacrylate containing quaternary ammonium structure and 70 wt% functional monomer, carboxyl oligo-urethane dimethacrylate. The final materials contain gold nanoparticles with a morphology dependant on the reaction conditions. The influence of photonic and chemical parameters on the shape of the nanoparticles has been examined. Specific interactions between the macromolecular network and the nascent particles play an important role insofar as they control the access of metal atoms to the different crystalline planes of the growing nanoparticles, which is necessary to obtain anisotropic objects. A common mechanism for the formation of the various types of AuNPs is proposed. Coupling the intrinsic characteristics of metal nanoparticles with those of the copolymer substrate could result in materials with innovative properties.

Abstract
In this contribution, the current state of the art is summarized and an overview of photoinitiating systems for both radical and cationic polymerizations and their potential application in the preparation of complex linear and cross-linked macromolecular structures are described. Recent relevant studies have been devoted to developing novel free radical and cationic photoinitiators having spectroscopic sensitivity in the near-UV or visible range. Photoinitiated controlled radical polymerization methods leading to tailor-made polymers with predetermined structure and architecture are briefly presented. Several synthetic methodologies for the preparation of epoxy and (meth)acrylate based formulations containing clay or metal nanoparticles are also summarized. The nanoparticles are homogenously distributed in the network without macroscopic agglomeration. Applicability to both free radical and cationic systems is demonstrated.
