Hybrid Polymer Vesicles: Controllable Preparation and Potential Applications

Hybrid polymer vesicles contain functional nanoparticles (NPs) in their walls, interfaces, coronae, or cavities. NPs render the hybrid vesicles with specific physical properties, while polymers endow them with structural stability and may significantly reduce the high toxicity of NPs. Therefore, hybrid vesicles integrate fascinating multifunctions from both NPs and polymeric vesicles, which have gained tremendous attention because of their diverse promising applications. Various types of delicate hybrid polymeric vesicles with size control and tunable localization of NPs in different parts of vesicles have been constructed via in situ and ex situ strategies, respectively. Their potential applications have been widely explored, as well. This review presents the progress of block copolymer (BCP) vesicle systems containing different types of NPs including metal NPs, magnetic NPs, and semiconducting quantum dots (QDs), etc. The strategies for controlling the location of NPs within hybrid vesicles are discussed. Typical potential applications of the elegant hybrid vesicles are also highlighted.

Synthesis and Applications of Dimensional SnS2 and SnS2/Carbon Nanomaterials

Dimensional nanomaterials can offer enhanced application properties benefiting from their sizes and morphological orientations. Tin disulfide (SnS₂) and carbon are typical sources of dimensional nanomaterials. SnS₂ is a semiconductor with visible light adsorption properties and has shown high energy density and long cycle life in energy storage processes. The integration of SnS₂ and carbon materials has shown enhanced visible light absorption and electron transmission efficiency. This helps to alleviate the volume expansion of SnS₂ which is a limitation during energy storage processes and provides a favorable bandgap in photocatalytic degradation. Several innovative approaches have been geared toward controlling the size, shape, and hybridization of SnS₂/Carbon composite nanostructures. However, dimensional nanomaterials of SnS₂ and SnS₂/Carbon have rarely been discussed. This review summarizes the synthesis methods of zero-, one-, two-, and three-dimensional SnS₂ and SnS₂/Carbon composite nanomaterials through wet and solid-state synthesis strategies. Moreover, the unique properties that promote their advances in photocatalysis and energy conversion and storage are discussed. Finally, some remarks and perspectives on the challenges and opportunities for exploring advanced SnS₂/Carbon nanomaterials are presented.

Biomimetic Microadhesion Guided Instant Spinning

Animals create high-performance fibers at natural ambient conditions via a unique spinning process. In contrast, the spinning technologies developed by human beings are usually clumsy and require sophisticated skills. Here, inspired by adhesion-based silkworm spinning, we report a microadhesion guided (MAG) spinning technology for instant and on-demand fabrication of micro/nanofibers. Enabled by the adhesion between the spinning fluids and the microneedles, the MAG spinning can generate micro/nanofibers with programmable morphology. By further mimicking the head movement of the silkworm spinning, the MAG technology is extended with three different modes: straight, vibratory, and twisted spinning, which generate oriented fibers, hierarchical cross-linked fibers, and all-in-one fibers, respectively. Due to the prevalence of microadhesion and its unprecedented flexibility in operation, equipment-free MAG spinning is finally realized for instant fiber fabrication by only polymeric foams. Finally, the MAG spinning is demonstrated as a promising instant technology for emergent applications, such as wound dressing.

A Short Review on Various Engineering Applications of Electrospun One-Dimensional Metal Oxides

The growing scientific interest in one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures based on metal-oxide semiconductors (MOS) resulted in the analysis of their structure, properties and fabrication methods being the subject of many research projects and publications all over the world, including in Poland. The application of the method of electrospinning with subsequent calcination for the production of these materials is currently very popular, which results from its simplicity and the possibility to control the properties of the obtained materials. The growing trend of industrial application of electrospun 1D MOS and the progress in modern technologies of nanomaterials properties investigations indicate the necessity to maintain the high level of research and development activities related to the structure and properties analysis of low-dimensional nanomaterials. Therefore, this review perfectly fits both the global trends and is a summary of many years of research work in the field of electrospinning carried out in many research units, especially in the Department of Engineering Materials and Biomaterials of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Technology of Silesian University of Technology, as well as an announcement of further activities in this field.

Self-Assembly of Molecular Brushes with Polyimide Backbone and Amphiphilic Block Copolymer Side Chains in Selective Solvents

Three-component molecular brushes with a polyimide backbone and amphiphilic block copolymer side chains with different contents of the “inner” hydrophilic (poly(methacrylic acid)) and “outer” hydrophobic (poly(methyl methacrylate)) blocks were synthesized and characterized by molecular hydrodynamics and optics methods in solutions of chloroform, dimethylformamide, tetrahydrofuran and ethanol. The peculiarity of the studied polymers is the amphiphilic structure of the grafted chains. The molar masses of the molecular brushes were determined by static and dynamic light scattering in chloroform in which polymers form molecularly disperse solutions. Spontaneous self-assembly of macromolecules was detected in dimethylformamide, tetrahydrofuran and ethanol. The aggregates size depended on the thermodynamic quality of the solvent as well as on the macromolecular architectural parameters. In dimethylformamide and tetrahydrofuran, the distribution of hydrodynamic radii of aggregates was bimodal, while in ethanol, it was unimodal. Moreover, in ethanol, an increase in the poly(methyl methacrylate) content caused a decrease in the hydrodynamic radius of aggregates. A significant difference in the nature of the blocks included in the brushes determines the selectivity of the used solvents, since their thermodynamic quality with respect to the blocks is different. The macromolecules of the studied graft copolymers tend to self-organization in selective solvents with formation of a core–shell structure with an insoluble solvophobic core surrounded by the solvophilic shell of side chains.

Growth of carbon nanofibres on molybdenum carbide nanowires and their self-decoration with noble-metal nanoparticles

High specific surface area makes carbon nanofibres suitable for catalyst support. Here we report on optimization of carbon nanofibre (CNF) growth on molybdenum carbide nanowires (MoCNW) by direct carburization ofMo 6 S 2 I 8 nanowire bundles. Typical CNFs obtained by this method are several hundreds of nanometres long at a diameter of 10-20 nm. We show that nanofibre growth does not depend on the initial morphology of the nanowires: nanofibres grow on individual bundles of MoCNW, on dense networks of nanowires deposited on silicon substrate, and on free-standing nanowire foils. We find that carbon nanofibres remain firmly attached to the nanowires even if they are modified intoMo 2 C and further into Mo S 2 nanowires. The method thus enables production of a novel hybrid material composed of Mo S 2 nanowires densely covered with carbon nanofibres. We have additionally shown that the obtained CNFs can easily be self-decorated with platinum nanoparticles with diameters of several nanometres directly from water solution at room temperature without reducing agents. Such efficient synthesis and decoration process yield hybrid platinum/CNF/molybdenum-based NW materials, which are a promising material for a wide range of possible future applications, including sensitive sensorics and improved catalysis.

Technical Characteristics and Wear-Resistant Mechanism of Nano Coatings: A Review

Nano-coating has been a hot issue in recent years. It has good volume effect and surface effect, and can effectively improve the mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and wear resistance of the coatings. It is important to improve the wear resistance of the material surface. The successful preparation of nano-coatings directly affects the application of nano-coatings. Firstly, the preparation methods of conventional surface coatings such as chemical vapor deposition and physical vapor deposition, as well as the newly developed surface coating preparation methods such as sol-gel method, laser cladding and thermal spraying are reviewed in detail. The preparation principle, advantages and disadvantages and the application of each preparation method in nano-coating are analyzed and summarized. Secondly, the types of nano-coating materials are summarized and analyzed by inorganic/inorganic nanomaterial coatings and organic/inorganic nanomaterial coatings, and their research progress is summarized. Finally, the wear-resistant mechanism of nano-coatings is revealed from three aspects: grain refinement, phase transformation toughening mechanism and nano-effects. The application prospects of nano-coatings and the development potential combined with 3D technology are prospected.

Theoretical prediction of morphological selection in amphiphilic systems

Biological and synthetic amphiphilic systems exhibit a wide range of morphologies. A density functional model for amphiphilic polymer phase mixtures is utilized to quantify localized equilibria and their stability, and ultimately predict and explain morphological preference. This is done by utilizing matched asymptotic expansions, which produces explicit connections between model parameters and macroscopic properties of equilibrium structures. Bilayers, cylindrical, and spherical micelle and vesicle configurations are found, and formulas which connect their geometry to ambient chemical potential are derived. Dynamics are studied in the context of a free boundary problem which describes the evolution of the hydrophobic-solvent domain interface. Linearization of this problem is used to explicitly determine growth rates and parameter regions of stability. All equilibria are found to have two branches of solutions terminating at a fold in the bifurcation diagram which signals the crossover from competitive stability to instability leading to ripening behavior. Ideally flat bilayers are determined to always possess a long wavelength buckling instability, suggesting that curved structures should be generically preferred. Spherical micelles exhibit morphological instabilities which are suppressed by large enough surface tension. Cylindrical micelles may have short-wavelength pearling and long-wavelength Rayleigh-Plateau-type instabilities. In addition, ideally infinite cylinders have an undulatory instability, suggesting that only finite length structures should be observed. A morphological phase diagram can be assembled which takes into account both existence and stability of different geometries. Consistent with experimental evidence, a bifurcation sequence from spheres to cylinders to vesicles is found as either surface tension or polymer composition increases. Coexistence of different stable morphologies is also observed.

Amphiphilic multicomponent molecular brushes

Multicomponent molecular brushes containing amphiphilic polymer moieties are promising objects of research of macromolecular chemistry. The development of stimulus-responsive systems sensitive to changes in environmental parameters, based on the molecular brushes, opens up new possibilities for their applications in medicine, biochemistry and microelectronics. The review presents the current understanding of the structures of main types of amphiphilic multicomponent brushes, depending on the chemical nature and type of coupling of the backbone and side chains. The approaches to the controlled synthesis of multicomponent molecular brushes of different architecture are analyzed. Self-assembly processes of multicomponent molecular brushes in selective solvents are considered.

Functional Macromolecule-Enabled Colloidal Synthesis: From Nanoparticle Engineering to Multifunctionality

The synthesis of well-defined inorganic colloidal nanostructures using functional macromolecules is an enabling technology that offers the possibility of fine-tuning the physicochemical properties of nanomaterials and has contributed to a broad range of practical applications. The utilization of functional reactive polymers and their colloidal assemblies leads to a high level of control over structural parameters of inorganic nanoparticles that are not easily accessible by conventional methods based on small-molecule ligands. Recent advances in polymerization techniques for synthetic polymers and newly exploited functions of natural biomacromolecules have opened up new avenues to monodisperse and multifunctional nanostructures consisting of integrated components with distinct chemistries but complementary properties. Here, the evolution of colloidal synthesis of inorganic nanoparticles is revisited. Then, the new developments of colloidal synthesis enabled by functional macromolecules and practical applications associated with the resulting optical, catalytic, and structural properties of colloidal nanostructures are summarized. Finally, a perspective on new and promising pathways to novel colloidal nanostructures built upon the continuous development of polymer chemistry, colloidal science, and nanochemistry is provided.

Self-Assembly of Polymer Blends and Nanoparticles through Rapid Solvent Exchange

Molecular dynamics simulations were performed to study the fabrication of polymeric colloids containing inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) via the flash nanoprecipitation (FNP) technique. During this process, a binary polymer blend, initially in a good solvent for the polymers, is rapidly mixed with NPs and a poor solvent for the polymers that is miscible with the good solvent. The simulations reveal that the polymers formed Janus particles with NPs distributed either on the surface of the aggregates, throughout their interior, or aligned at the interface between the two polymer domains, depending on the NP-polymer and NP-solvent interactions. The loading and surface density of NPs can be controlled by the polymer feed concentration, the NP feed concentration, and their ratio in the feed streams. Selective localization of NPs by incorporating electrostatic interactions between polymers and NPs has also been investigated, and was shown to be an effective way to enhance NP loading and surface density as compared to the case with only van der Waals attractions. This work demonstrates that the FNP process is promising for the production of structured and hybrid nanocolloids in a continuous and scalable way, with independent control over particle properties such as size, NP location, loading, and surface density. Our results provide useful guidelines for experimental fabrication of such hybrid nanoparticles.

Electrospun CuS/PVP Nanowires and Superior Near-Infrared Filtration Efficiency for Thermal Shielding Applications

Selective filtration of near-infrared (NIR) regions is of primary importance to energy saving via thermal shielding. However, uniform coating of highly effective nanomaterials on flexible substrates remains very challenging. Here, we introduce new material processing and fabrication methodologies that manufacture electrospun copper sulfide/polyvinylpyrrolidone (CuS/PVP) nanowires for enhanced thermal shielding efficiency. Electrospinning offers well-dispersed CuS nanoparticles in a thermal shielding film, which is not achievable in typical solution coating processes. Directly deposited CuS/PVP nanowires on a flexible polymer membrane are enabled by a fluorination treatment that decreases the interfacial electrostatic repulsion. Monitoring of in situ temperature change of a box-shielded, CuS/PVP nanowire film demonstrates excellent NIR shielding efficiency (87.15%). Direct integration of the film with a model car and exposure to direct sunlight demonstrates about twice-higher shielding efficiency than commercial tungsten oxide films. Overall, the comprehensive study of nanomaterial preparation, surface treatment, and integration techniques allows the fabrication of highly flexible and reliable thermal shielding films.

Synergistic self-seeding in one-dimension: a route to patchy and block comicelles with uniform and controllable length

By manipulating both the dissolution sequence of polymer crystallites and the growth rate of polymer unimers, patchy comicelles and block comicelles with uniform and controllable length can be obtained.

Self-seeding is a process unique to polymer crystals, which consist of regions of different chain packing order and different crystallinity. Here we report the synergistic self-seeding behaviour of pairs of core-crystalline block copolymer (BCP) micelle fragments and show how this strategy can be employed to control the morphology of these BCP comicelles. Each micelle fragment has a critical dissolution temperature (T_c), and unimers of each BCP have a characteristic epitaxial growth rate. The T_c value affects the dissolution sequence of the fragments upon heating, while the unimer growth rate affects the growth sequence upon cooling. By carefully choosing micelle fragments having different T_c values as well as growth rates, we could prepare patchy comicelles and block comicelles with uniform and controllable length. This synergistic self-seeding strategy is a simple yet effective route to control both length and morphology of core-crystalline comicelles

Rapid production of cadmium infinite coordination polymer nanofiber via solvent induced precipitation method

The precipitation synthesis of cadmium infinite coordination polymer (Cd-ICP) nanofibers with a high degree of uniformity is reported. The elemental analyses (CHN and ICP-OES), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) show that thermally robust monodisperse solid consists of bi-carboxylic acid linker and cadmium ion. The coordination between the Cd²⁺ ion and bi-carboxylic acid linker was investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The photoluminescence (PL) properties of the Cd-ICP were studied in comparison with those of the bi-carboxylic acid linker. It was shown that the emission intensity of the Cd-ICP is much stronger than linker due to the structural rigidity after the coordination of linker to Cd ions. The field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) results show that after calcination of the Cd-ICP the morphology changed from fiber to hexagonal-like disc. Furthermore, the results of UV-Vis spectroscopy show larger band gap for obtained CdO relative to the bulk counterpart.

Crystallization-Driven Two-Dimensional Self-Assembly of Amphiphilic PCL-b-PEO Coated Gold Nanoparticles in Aqueous Solution

This Letter reports the first formation of free-standing plasmonic monolayer nanosheets by the self-assembly of AuNPs without assistance from a planar interface. The strategy involves the coating of poly(caprolactone)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PCL-b-PEO) diblock copolymers on AuNPs, followed by two-dimensional (2D) self-assembly of the resultant amphiphilic AuNPs in aqueous phase. The crystallization of the PCL blocks, affected by their grafting density and radius of gyration, drives the formation of the AuNP nanosheets, which undergoes a growth process of individual micelles to small nanosheets and eventually to large sheets. Due to the plasmonic coupling of AuNPs in close proximity, the AuNP nanosheets exhibit near-infrared (NIR) absorption with the maximum at about 700 nm. This study not only brings a new approach toward polymer-AuNP hybrid superstructures in solution, but also provides a new system for fundamental study on 2D self-assembly of AuNPs.

Micelles Structure Development as a Strategy to Improve Smart Cancer Therapy

Micelles as colloidal suspension have attracted considerable attention due to their potential use for both cancer diagnosis and therapy. These structures have proven their ability to deliver poorly water-soluble anticancer drugs, improve drug stability, and have good penetration and site-specificity, leading to enhance therapeutic efficacy. Micelles are composed of hydrophobic and hydrophilic components assembled into nanosized spherical, ellipsoid, cylindrical, or unilamellar structures. For their simple formation, they are widely studied, either by using opposite polymers attachment consisting of two or more block copolymers, or by using fatty acid molecules that can modify themselves in a rounded shape. Recently, hybrid and responsive stimuli nanomicelles are formed either by integration with metal nanoparticles such as silver, gold, iron oxide nanoparticles inside micelles or by a combination of lipids and polymers into single composite. Herein, through this special issue, an updated overview of micelles development and their application for cancer therapy will be discussed.

PLMA-b-POEGMA Amphiphilic Block Copolymers as Nanocarriers for the Encapsulation of Magnetic Nanoparticles and Indomethacin

We report here on the utilization of poly(lauryl methacrylate)-b-poly(oligo ethylene glycol methacrylate) (PLMA-b-POEGMA) amphiphilic block copolymers, which form compound micelles in aqueous solutions, as nanocarriers for the encapsulation of either magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles or iron oxide nanoparticles, and the model hydrophobic drug indomethacin in the their hydrophobic core. The mixed nanostructures were characterized using dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) in terms of their structure and solution properties. Magnetophoresis experiments showed that the mixed solutions maintain the magnetic properties of the initial iron oxide nanoparticles. Results indicate that the cumulative hydrophilic/hydrophobic balance of all components determines the colloidal stability of the nanosystems. The effect of salt and bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein concentration on the structure of the mixed nanostructures was also investigated. Disintegration of the mixed nanostructures was observed in both cases, showing the importance of these parameters in the structure formation and stability of such complex mixed nanosystems.

Mussel-Inspired Polydopamine Coating on Tobacco Mosaic Virus: One-Dimensional Hybrid Nanofibers for Gold Nanoparticle Growth

One-dimensional (1D) hybrid nanofibers with surface-deposited gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been fabricated by self-assembly of rod-like tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) with mussel-inspired polymerization of dopamine and in situ reduction of gold ion, providing a method for sensing the endocytic pathway of nanomaterial.

Bioactive Potential of 3D-Printed Oleo-Gum-Resin Disks: B. papyrifera, C. myrrha, and S. benzoin Loading Nanooxides-TiO2, P25, Cu2O, and MoO3

This experimental study investigates the bioactive potential of filaments produced via hot melt extrusion (HME) and intended for fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing purposes. The oleo-gum-resins from benzoin, myrrha, and olibanum in pure state and also charged with 10% of metal oxide nanoparticles, TiO₂, P25, Cu₂O, and MoO₃, were characterized by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDXMA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Disks were 3D-printed into model geometries (10 × 5 mm) and the disk-diffusion methodology was used for the evaluation of antimicrobial and antifungal activity of materials in study against the clinical isolates: Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans. Due to their intrinsic properties, disks containing resins in pure state mostly prevent surface-associated growth; meanwhile, disks loaded with 10% oxides prevent planktonic growth of microorganisms in the susceptibility assay. The microscopy analysis showed that part of nanoparticles was encapsulated by the biopolymeric matrix of resins, in most cases remaining disorderly dispersed over the surface of resins. Thermal analysis shows that plant resins have peculiar characteristics, with a thermal behavior similar to commercial available semicrystalline polymers, although their structure consists of a mix of organic compounds.

Rapid Self-Assembly of Block Copolymers for Flower-Like Particles with High Throughput

The self-assembly of block copolymers has evolved into a foremost bottom-up approach for building polymeric materials. Historical challenges exist within this lively field, including the scalability and elegant simplicity of self-assembled aggregates with predictable structures. Here, we report a generally applicable strategy for the rapid self-assembly of poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(l-lactic acid) with the help of a single oil-in-water emulsion. A kind of flower-like polymer particle with filamentous surface branches is rapidly formed after removing the oil phase from the emulsion system. Moreover, the dimension of the branched filaments and the spherical internal core can be controlled through regulating the block ratio and the emulsification conditions. In particular, we propose an explosion theory as a balance between phase separation and interchain interaction for explaining the formation of the branched structures of the flower-like particles. The particles with high throughput are further functionalized with polypyrrole for their use in enhanced photoelectric-sensing applications.

Facile fabrication of high-quality Ag/PS coaxial nanocables based on the mixed mode of soft/hard templates

A new kind of high-quality Ag/PS coaxial nanocables can be facilely synthesized by using soft/hard templates method. In order to effectively introduce Ag sources into porous polystyrene (PS) nanotubes which were trapped in porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) hard template, Pluronic F127 (F127) was used as guiding agent, soft template and reductant. Meanwhile, ethylene glycol solution was also used as solvent and co-reducing agent to assist in the formation of silver nanowires. The influences of concentration of F127 and reducing reaction time on the formation of Ag/PS coaxial nanocables were discussed. Results indicated that the high-quality Ag/PS coaxial nanocables can be obtained by the mixed mode of soft/hard templates under optimized conditions. This strategy is expected to be extended to design more metal/polymer coaxial nanocables for the benefit of creation of complex and functional nanoarchitectures and components.

Cellular Uptake and Movement in 2D and 3D Multicellular Breast Cancer Models of Fructose-Based Cylindrical Micelles That Is Dependent on the Rod Length

While the shape effect of nanoparticles on cellular uptake has been frequently studied, no consistent conclusions are available currently. The controversy mainly focuses on the cellular uptake of elongated (i.e., filaments or rod-like micelles) as compared to spherical (i.e., micelles and vesicles) nanoparticles. So far, there is no clear trend that proposes the superiority of spherical or nonspherical nanoparticles with conflicting reports available in the literature. One of the reasons is that these few reports available deal with nanoparticles of different shapes, surface chemistries, stabilities, and aspects ratios. Here, we investigated the effect of the aspect ratio of cylindrical micelles on the cellular uptake by breast cancer cell lines MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231. Cylindrical micelles, also coined rod-like micelles, of various length were prepared using fructose-based block copolymers poly(1-O-methacryloyl-β-d-fructopyranose)-b-poly(methyl methacrylate). The critical water content, temperature, and stirring rate that trigger the morphological transition from spheres to rods of various aspect ratios were identified, allowing the generation of different kinetically trapping morphologies. High shear force as they are found with high stirring rates was observed to inhibit the formation of long rods. Rod-like micelles with length of 500-2000 nm were subsequently investigated toward their ability to translocate in breast cancer cells and penetrate into MCF-7 multicellular spheroid models. It was found that shorter rods were taken up at a higher rate than longer rods.

Flexible Photodetectors Based on 1D Inorganic Nanostructures

Flexible photodetectors with excellent flexibility, high mechanical stability and good detectivity, have attracted great research interest in recent years. 1D inorganic nanostructures provide a number of opportunities and capabilities for use in flexible photodetectors as they have unique geometry, good transparency, outstanding mechanical flexibility, and excellent electronic/optoelectronic properties. This article offers a comprehensive review of several types of flexible photodetectors based on 1D nanostructures from the past ten years, including flexible ultraviolet, visible, and infrared photodetectors. High-performance organic-inorganic hybrid photodetectors, as well as devices with 1D nanowire (NW) arrays, are also reviewed. Finally, new concepts of flexible photodetectors including piezophototronic, stretchable and self-powered photodetectors are examined to showcase the future research in this exciting field.

Hairy Core-Shell Polymer Nano-objects from Self-Assembled Block Copolymer Structures

Fabrication of core-shell polymer nano-objects with well-defined shape and hairy shell has been a subject of immense interest in polymer chemistry for more than two decades now. Different approaches such as those involving synthesis (grafting approaches) and block copolymer self-assembly (solution as well as bulk) have been used for the preparation of such nano-objects. Of these approaches that involving bulk self-assembled structures of block copolymers have been of special interest because of the simplicity and range of shape and structures possible. The present review focuses on the advances which have been made in this direction using diblock and triblock self-assembled structures. It will be shown that this approach allows to fabricate hairy nano-objects of not only simple shapes such as spheres, rods, and sheets but also those with more complex shape and morphology such as multicompartment micelles, which are not possible to obtain with synthetic or solution self-assembly approaches. Furthermore, interesting structures such as Janus nano-objects could also be fabricated using this approach. The review further highlights the use of such nano-objects for templating applications.

Dynamic control of the location of nanoparticles in hybrid co-assemblies

We herein demonstrated an approach to control the spatial distribution of components in hybrid microspheres. Hybrid core-shell structured microspheres (CSMs) prepared through co-assembly were used as starting materials, which are comprised of anthracene-ended hyperbranched poly(ether amine) (AN-hPEA) in the shell and crystallized anthracene containing polyhedral oligomer silsesquioxane (AN-POSS). Upon thermal annealing at a temperature higher than the melting point of AN-POSS, the diffusion of AN-POSS from the core to the shell of CSM leads to a transition of morphology from the core-shell structure to core-transition-shell to the more stable homogeneous morphology, which has been revealed by experimental results of TEM and DSC. The mechanism for the morphology transition of CSM induced by the diffusion of AN-POSS was disclosed by a dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulation. A mathematical model for the diffusion of POSS in the hybrid microsphere is established according to Fick's law of diffusion and can be used to quantify its distribution in CSM. Thus, the spatial distribution of POSS in the microsphere can be controlled dynamically by tuning the temperature and time of thermal annealing.

Nanotubular J-aggregates and quantum dots coupled for efficient resonance excitation energy transfer

Resonant coupling between distinct excitons in organic supramolecular assemblies and inorganic semiconductors is supposed to offer an approach to optoelectronic devices. Here, we report on colloidal nanohybrids consisting of self-assembled tubular J-aggregates decorated with semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) via electrostatic self-assembly. The role of QDs in the energy transfer process can be switched from a donor to an acceptor by tuning its size and thereby the excitonic transition energy while keeping the chemistry unaltered. QDs are located within a close distance (<4 nm) to the J-aggregate surface, without harming the tubular structures and optical properties of J-aggregates. The close proximity of J-aggregates and QDs allows the strong excitation energy transfer coupling, which is around 92% in the case of energy transfer from the QD donor to the J-aggregate acceptor and approximately 20% in the reverse case. This system provides a model of an organic-inorganic light-harvesting complex using methods of self-assembly in aqueous solution, and it highlights a route toward hierarchical synthesis of structurally well-defined supramolecular objects with advanced functionality.

Controlled synthesis of organic nanophotonic materials with specific structures and compositions

Organic nanomaterials have drawn great interest for their potential applications in high-speed miniaturized photonic integration due to their high photoluminescence quantum efficiency, structural processability, ultrafast photoresponse, and excellent property engineering. Based on the rational design on morphological and componential levels, a series of organic nanomaterials have been controllably synthesized in recent years, and their excitonic/photonic behaviors has been fine-tuned to steer the light flow for specific optical applications. This review presents a comprehensive summary of recent breakthroughs in the controlled synthesis of organic nanomaterials with specific structures and compositions, whose tunable photonic properties would provide a novel platform for multifunctional applications. First, we give a general overview of the tailored construction of novel nanostructures with various photonic properties. Then, we summarize the design and controllable synthesis of composite materials for the modulation of their functionalities. Subsequently, special emphasis is put on the fabrication of complex nanostructures towards wide applications in isolated photonic devices. We conclude with our personal viewpoints on the development directions in the novel design and controllable construction of organic nanomaterials for future applications in highly integrated photonic devices and chips.

Noncovalent fabrication and tunable fusion of block copolymer-giant polyoxometalate hybrid micelles

The block copolymers (BCs), as structure-directing agents, co-assembling with nanoscale inorganic additives is an important route to fabricate nanostructured hybrid materials. In this work, we present a facile approach to fabricate hybrid micelles composed of BCs and polyoxometalates (POMs), in which the POM clusters are premodified with the groups that can specifically interact with a certain BC block. A representative POM (NH4)42[Mo(132)O(372)(CH(3)COO)(30)(H2O)72] (Mo(132)) is chosen as the example and encapsulated with cationic molecules containing carboxyphenyl groups through electrostatic interactions, and then the resulting hybrid complex can further co-assemble with poly(styrene-block-4-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P4VP) through hydrogen bonding with the pyridine groups, which leads to the formation of hybrid micelles and the localization of Mo(132) in the micelle cores. The micelles exhibit a high stability despite time and dilution. Furthermore, the fusion of the micelles can be readily adjusted by varying the length of PS blocks, which is promising to be used in constructing polymer-POM hybrid materials with discrete or continuous hybrid domains. This work is based on the electrostatic premodification of POMs and thus its concept is generally suitable for the whole anionic POM system, which may create a large class of BC-POM nanocomposites with tunable structures.
