Synthesis and properties of segmented polyurethanes with triptycene units in the hard segment

THE STUDY OF INTERMOLECULAR INTERACTIONS IN THE POSS-CONTAINING NANOCOMPOSITES BASED ON POLYURETHANE AND POLYURETHANE/POLY(HYDROXYPROPYL METHACRYLATE) MATRICES

The nanocomposites based on polyurethane matrix and multicomponent polymer matrices consisting of polyurethane and poly(hydroxypropyl methacrylate) with different contents of the last, and 1,2-propanediolisobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (1,2-propanediolisobutyl-POSS), which was used as a functionalized nanofiller, were synthesized. The influence of the content of 1,2-propanediolisobutyl-POSS on intermolecular interactions and structural features of the nanocomposites was investigated by the method of IR-spectroscopy with Fourier transformation and attenuated total reflection (FTIR-ATR). The study of thermal curing of the model system, which consists of the adduct of trimethylolpropane with toluene diisocyanate and 1,2-propanediolisobutyl-POSS, made it possible to conclude that 1,2-propanediolisobutyl-POSS participates in the reaction of urethane formation using of one of the terminal hydroxyl groups, and it is incorporated into the polymer chain between cross-linking of polyurethane networks. The investigation of multicomponent polymer matrices by FTIR-ATR spectroscopy was done and was shown that photopolymerization of second polymer poly(hydroxypropyl methacrylate) in the matrix of polyurethane was completed by the opening of a double bond and the formation of a linear polymer in the composition of semi-IPN. Studies of nanocomposites based on multicomponent polymer matrices consisting of polyurethane and poly(hydroxypropyl methacrylate) with 15 and 30 % of the last by FTIR-ATR spectroscopy demonstrated the presence of POSS in the nanocomposites and the influence of POSS content on the structure of the studied systems and on the degree of phase separation. The POSS is "embedded" into the polymer chain between cross-linking of the polyurethane networks, with the additional formation of a complex system of intermolecular hydrogen bonds between the carboxyl and amine components of urethane groups in the nanocomposites.

Sustainable Shape-Memory Polyurethane from Abietic Acid: Superior Mechanical Properties and Shape Recovery with Tunable Transition Temperatures

A new chemical architecture from abietic acid, consisting of a cycloaliphatic unsaturated terminal diisocyanate (AADI) structure, is synthesized and fully characterized. The AADI is then used to construct an amorphous and biocompatible shape-memory polyurethane (SMPU) network system with adjustable cross-linking densities over a wide range. The SMPU network exhibits good shape-memory properties with a shape fixing rate of greater than 98 % and a shape recovery rate of 95 %. In vitro hydrolytic biodegradation weight loss ratio of SMPUs reaches 71 % within eight weeks. The physical properties of these SMPUs are comparable to those reported for SMPUs obtained from commercially available petroleum-derived diisocyanates. This is the first time that multiple SMPU networks based on abietic acid have been reported. These environmentally-friendly SMPUs display a wide range of physicomechanical properties with promising hydrolytic degradability, showing good potential for practical application.

The synthesis of polymeric dyes based on waterborne polyurethane: a reaction kinetics study using UV absorption spectroscopy

Pentiptycene-Based Polyurethane with Enhanced Mechanical Properties and CO2-Plasticization Resistance for Thin Film Gas Separation Membranes

The development of thin film composite (TFC) membranes offers an opportunity to achieve the permeability/selectivity requirements for optimum CO₂ separation performance. However, the durability and performance of thin film gas separation membranes are mostly challenged by weak mechanical properties and high CO₂ plasticization. Here, we designed new polyurethane (PU) structures with bulky aromatic chain extenders that afford preferred mechanical properties for ultra-thin-film formation. An improvement of about 1500% in Young's modulus and 600% in hardness was observed for pentiptycene-based PUs compared to the typical PU membranes. Single (CO₂, H₂, CH₄, and N₂) and mixed (CO₂/N₂ and CO₂/CH₄) gas permeability tests were performed on the PU membranes. The resulting TFC membranes showed a high CO₂ permeance up to 1400 GPU (10^-6 cm³(STP) cm^-2 s^-1 cmHg^-1) and the CO₂/N₂ and CO₂/H₂ selectivities of about 22 and 2.1, respectively. The enhanced mechanical properties of pentiptycene-based PUs result in high-performance thin membranes with the similar selectivity of the bulk polymer. The thin film membranes prepared from pentiptycene-based PUs also showed a twofold enhanced plasticization resistance compared to non-pentiptycene-containing PU membranes.
