Interfacial dynamics of polydimethylsiloxane adsorbed on fumed metal oxide particles of a wide range of specific surface area

Effect of Micro- and Nano-Lignin on the Thermal, Mechanical, and Antioxidant Properties of Biobased PLA-Lignin Composite Films

Bio-based poly(lactic acid) (PLA) composite films were produced using unmodified soda micro- or nano-lignin as a green filler at four different contents, between 0.5 wt% and 5 wt%. The PLA-lignin composite polymers were synthesized by solvent casting to prepare a masterbatch, followed by melt mixing. The composites were then converted into films, to evaluate the effect of lignin content and size on their physicochemical and mechanical properties. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), supported by polarized light microscopy (PLM), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were employed to investigate the PLA crystallization and the interactions with Lignin (L) and Nanolignin (NL). The presence of both fillers (L and NL) had a negligible effect on the glass transition temperature (chain diffusion). However, it resulted in suppression of the corresponding change in heat capacity. This was indicative of a partial immobilization of the PLA chains on the lignin entities, due to interfacial interactions, which was slightly stronger in the case of NL. Lignin was also found to facilitate crystallization, in terms of nucleation; whereas, this was not clear in the crystalline fraction. The addition of L and NL led to systematically larger crystallites compared with neat PLA, which, combined with the higher melting temperature, provided indications of a denser crystal structure in the composites. The mechanical, optical, antioxidant, and surface properties of the composite films were also investigated. The tensile strength and Young's modulus were improved by the addition of L and especially NL. The UV-blocking and antioxidant properties of the composite films were also enhanced, especially at higher filler contents. Importantly, the PLA-NL composite films constantly outperformed their PLA-L counterparts, due to the finer dispersion of NL in the PLA matrix, as verified by the TEM micrographs. These results suggest that bio-based and biodegradable PLA films filled with L, and particularly NL, can be employed as competitive and green alternatives in the food packaging industry.

Influence of the filler distribution on PDMS-graphene based nanocomposites selected properties

Insufficient homogeneity is one of the pressing problems in nanocomposites' production as it largely impairs the properties of materials with relatively high filler concentration. Within this work, it is demonstrated how selected mixing techniques (magnetic mixer stirring, calendaring and microfluidization) affect filler distribution in poly(dimethylsiloxane)-graphene based nanocomposites and, consequently, their properties. The differences were assessed via imaging and thermal techniques, i.a. Raman spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry. As microfluidization proved to provide the best homogenization, it was used to prepare nanocomposites of different filler concentration, whose structural and thermal properties were investigated. The results show that the concentration of graphene significantly affects polymer chain mobility, grain sizes, defect density and cross-linking level. Both factors considered in this work considerably influence thermal stability and other features which are crucial for application in electronics, EMI shielding, thermal interface materials etc.

Polymer Nanocomposite Dielectrics: Understanding the Matrix/Particle Interface

Polymer nanocomposite dielectrics possess exceptional electric properties that are absent in the pristine dielectric polymers. The matrix/particle interface in polymer nanocomposite dielectrics is suggested to play decisive roles on the bulk material performance. Herein, we present a critical overview of recent research advances and important insights in understanding the matrix/particle interfacial characteristics in polymer nanocomposite dielectrics. The primary experimental strategies and state-of-the-art characterization techniques for resolving the local property-structure correlation of the matrix/particle interface are dissected in depth, with a focus on the characterization capabilities of each strategy or technique that other approaches cannot compete with. Limitations to each of the experimental strategy are evaluated as well. In the last section of this Review, we summarize and compare the three experimental strategies from multiple aspects and point out their advantages and disadvantages, critical issues, and possible experimental schemes to be established. Finally, the authors' personal viewpoints regarding the challenges of the existing experimental strategies are presented, and potential directions for the interface study are proposed for future research.

Multiscale Study of the Charge Transport Properties of Silicone Rubber Oligomers

Polymer dielectrics are widely used as insulation in electronic and electrical equipment. The charge transport process in polymer dielectrics under a high electric field, which is considered to result in electrical aging and even breakdown of equipment insulation, has attracted considerable attention. Based on a localized charge transfer model, the charge transport mechanism for typical silicone rubber (SR) insulating materials was studied by multiscale methods. A model of silicone rubber oligomers under standard conditions was generated by classical molecular dynamics. The frontier molecular orbitals and projected density of states for the SR oligomer were obtained via quantum chemistry methods. The electronic coupling, reorganization energy, and free energy difference for both electron and hole transfer processes between adjacent SR molecules in the molecular dynamics model were calculated. Both hole transfer and electron transfer in SR conform to an intermolecular hopping mechanism due to their high intramolecular reorganization energy and low intermolecular electronic coupling. The results of normal mode analysis for reorganization energy indicate that the high-temperature approximation holds for charge transport in SR around or above room temperature. The charge transfer trajectory and charge mobility in SR were simulated based on kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. The hole and electron mobilities at room temperature were calculated to be 7.24 × 10^-11 and 2.76 × 10^-9 cm²/Vs, respectively, which agrees with the experimental data. Both electron transport and hole transport in SR show thermal activation characteristics, with corresponding activation energies of 358 and 314 meV, respectively. This work suggests a physical model to describe the charge transport process in SR polymer dielectrics.

Effects of CNTs on thermal transitions, thermal diffusivity and electrical conductivity in nanocomposites: comparison between an amorphous and a semicrystalline polymer matrix

Two series of polymer nanocomposites (PNCs) based on amorphous styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and semicrystalline linear low-density polyethylene (PE) matrices were filled with 2-15 wt% carbon nanotubes (CNT) and were studied by employing calorimetry, dielectric spectroscopy and laser flash analysis. The electrical conductivity, σ, increased with CNT loading and similar values were exhibited for the two matrices, uniquely depending on the concentration of the CNTs, suggesting practically no effects of the crystalline fraction (CF) on σ. For both types of matrix, a fraction of the polymer was found to be immobilized (rigid amorphous fraction, RAF). For the amorphous SBR, the RAF in PNCs originates uniquely from the presence of the filler (RAFfiller up to 0.19 wt). On the other hand, for the semicrystalline PE, the RAF is significantly larger (0.4-0.6 wt) due to the severe contribution of the RAF around the crystals (RAFcrystal). The thermal diffusivity, α, is quite low in both types of PNCs and exhibits higher values in the semicrystalline matrix (PE-based PNCs). Our results suggest that in these PNCs, heat transport mechanisms are activated mainly in the crystalline domains, more so with the additive contribution of the RAFcrystal. In the amorphous SBR-based PNCs, heat transport is facilitated mainly by CNTs, whereas the RAFfiller is found to be a good measure of the thermal resistance behavior of CNT/polymer interphases and consequently, of thermal diffusivity. Direct correlation of the results obtained by the three techniques with each other revealed the systematic dependence of α on the amount of RAF in each matrix; the α(RAF) trends, however, are different for the two matrices. Furthermore, the results suggest that the two RAFs exhibit different structural characteristics, e.g. the RAFcrystal exhibits a more ordered structure than the RAFfiller; this issue is still an open debate in the literature.

Influence of molecular weight on molecular dynamics and dynamic rheology of polypropylene glycol filled with silica

Molecular weight strongly influences the molecular dynamics and rheological responses of nanocomposites, which is far from being well understood. Herein molecular dynamics and rheological behaviors of hydrophilic fumed silica filled unentangled polypropylene glycol (PPG) were investigated as a function of weight averaged molecular weight (M w) of PPG and volume fraction (∅) of silica. It is shown that M w does not affect the glassy layers surrounding the nanoparticles and the segmental dynamics of the mobile PPG phase. On the other hand, the mobile PPG phase in the highly filled nanocomposites exhibits an abnormal "more fragile" to "stronger" transition with increasing M w. The reinforcement and thinning behaviors are stronger in lower-M w nanocomposites with the "more fragile" mobile PPG phase. The results suggest that reinforcement of nanocomposites affects the dynamic fragility of the mobile phase of the matrix.

Dynamic glass transition of the rigid amorphous fraction in polyurethane-urea/SiO2 nanocomposites

We report molecular dynamics in the rigid amorphous fraction (RAF) of the polymer bound at the interfaces with nanoparticles in polymer nanocomposites and calculate the glass transition temperature, T_g, for this bound layer of polymer. We follow the '3-phase-model' for semicrystalline polymers where the polymer matrix consists of the crystalline fraction (CF), the mobile amorphous fraction (MAF) and the RAF. While the amorphous polymer bound by crystallites is completely rigid, neither contributing to the glass transition, nor displaying molecular dynamics, the amorphous polymer bound at the interfaces with filler displays decelerated dynamics, as compared to the bulk polymer. Reports in the literature suggest a discrepancy between T_g values obtained by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and by Dielectric Relaxation Spectroscopy (DRS). As a plausible explanation we suggest that DRS results in T_g values taking into account the bound polymer, whereas DSC does not. For this investigation we use semicrystalline polyurethane-urea/SiO₂ nanocomposites and employ, next to DSC and DRS, SEM, SAXS and WAXS for morphological characterization. It is our intention to use DRS as a tool for investigating the RAF.

Interfacial phenomena at a surface of individual and complex fumed nanooxides

Investigations of interfacial and temperature behaviors of nonpolar and polar adsorbates interacting with individual and complex fumed metal or metalloid oxides (FMO), initial and subjected to various treatments or chemical functionalization and compared to such porous adsorbents as silica gels, precipitated silica, mesoporous ordered silicas, filled polymeric composites, were analyzed. Complex nanooxides include core-shell nanoparticles, CSNP (50-200nm in size) with titania or alumina cores and silica or alumina shells in contrast to simple and smaller nanoparticles of individual FMO. CSNP could be destroyed under high-pressure cryogelation (HPCG) or mechanochemical activation (MCA). These treatments affect the structure of aggregates of nanoparticles and agglomerates of aggregates, resulting in their becoming more compacted. The analysis shows that complex FMO could be more sensitive to external actions than simple nanooxides such as fumed silica. Any treatment of 'soft' FMO affects the interfacial and temperature behaviors of polar and nonpolar adsorbates. Rearrangement of secondary particles and surface functionalization affects the freezing-melting point depression of adsorbates. For some adsorbates, open hysteresis loops became readily apparent in adsorption-desorption isotherms. Clustering of adsorbates bound in textural pores in aggregates of nanoparticles (i.e., voids between nanoparticles in secondary structures) causes reduced changes in enthalpy during phase transitions (freezing, fusion, evaporation). Freezing point depression and melting point elevation cause significant hysteresis freezing-melting effects for adsorbates bound to FMO in the textural pores. Relaxation phenomena for both low- and high-molecular weight adsorbates or filled polymeric composites are affected by the morphology of primary particles, structural organization of secondary particles of differently treated or functionalized FMO, content of adsorbates, co-adsorption order, and temperature.

Unexpected Molecular Weight Effect in Polymer Nanocomposites

The properties of the interfacial layer between the polymer matrix and nanoparticles largely determine the macroscopic properties of polymer nanocomposites (PNCs). Although the static thickness of the interfacial layer was found to increase with the molecular weight (MW), the influence of MW on segmental relaxation and the glass transition in this layer remains to be explored. In this Letter, we show an unexpected MW dependence of the interfacial properties in PNC with attractive polymer-nanoparticle interactions: the thickness of the interfacial layer with hindered segmental relaxation decreases as MW increases, in sharp contrast to theoretical predictions. Further analyses reveal a reduction in mass density of the interfacial layer with increasing MW, which can elucidate these unexpected dynamic effects. Our observations call for a significant revision of the current understandings of PNCs and suggest interesting ways to tailor their properties.
