Gold-decorated polymeric monoliths: In-situ vs ex-situ immobilization strategies and flow through catalytic applications towards nitrophenols reduction

Metallic Nanoparticles Adsorbed at the Pore Surface of Polymers with Various Porous Morphologies: Toward Hybrid Materials Meant for Heterogeneous Supported Catalysis

Hybrid materials consisting of metallic nanoparticles (NPs) adsorbed on porous polymeric supports have been the subject of intense research for many years. Such materials indeed gain from intrinsic properties, e.g., high specific surface area, catalytic properties, porous features, etc., of both components. Rational design of such materials is fundamental regarding the functionalization of the support surface and thus the interactions required for the metallic NPs to be strongly immobilized at the pore surface. Herein are presented some significant scientific contributions to this rapidly expanding research field. This contribution will notably focus on various examples of such hybrid systems prepared from porous polymers, whatever the morphology and size of the pores. Such porous polymeric supports can display pores with sizes ranging from a few nanometers to hundreds of microns while pore morphologies, such as spherical, tubular, etc., and/or open or closed, can be obtained. These systems have allowed some catalytic molecular reactions to be successfully undertaken, such as the reduction of nitroaromatic compounds or dyes, e.g., methylene blue and Eosin Y, boronic acid-based C–C homocoupling reactions, but also cascade reactions consisting of two catalytic reactions achieved in a row.

Obtaining and Characterizing the Osmium Nanoparticles/n-Decanol Bulk Membrane Used for the p-Nitrophenol Reduction and Separation System

Liquid membranes based on nanoparticles follow a continuous development, both from obtaining methods and characterization of techniques points of view. Lately, osmium nanoparticles have been deposited either on flat membranes, with the aim of initiating some reaction processes, or on hollow fiber membranes, with the aim of increasing the contact surface with the phases of the membrane system. This paper presents the obtainment and characterization of a liquid membrane based on osmium nanoparticles (Os-NP) dispersed in ndecanol (nDol) for the realization of a membrane system with a large contact surface between the phases, but without using a liquid membrane support. The dispersion of osmium nanoparticles in n-decanol is carried out by the method of reducing osmium tetroxide with 1-undecenoic acid (UDA). The resulting membrane was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy analysis (EDAX), thermoanalysis (TG, DSC), Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR) spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering (DLS). In order to increase the mass transfer surface, a design for the membrane system was realized with the dispersion of the membrane through the receiving phase and the dispersion of the source phase through the membrane (DBLM-dispersion bulk liquid membrane). The process performance was tested for the reduction of p-nitrophenol (pNP) from the source phase, using sodium tetra-borohydride (NaBH₄), to p-aminophenol (pAP), which was transported and collected in the receiving phase. The obtained results show that membranes based on the dispersion of osmium nanoparticles in n-decanol can be used with an efficiency of over 90% for the reduction of p-nitrophenol and the separation of p-aminophenol.

In situ controlled and conformal coating of polydimethylsiloxane foams with silver nanoparticle networks with tunable piezo-resistive properties

Nanoparticle-polymer composites hold promise in enabling material functionalities that are difficult to achieve otherwise, yet are hampered to date by the scarce control and tunability of the nanoparticle collective properties on the polymer surface, especially for polymer foams featuring a complex three-dimensional pore network. Here we report on the controlled and conformal in situ coating of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) foams with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with surface coverage finely tunable over a large range, from 0 to 75%, via the one-step room temperature reduction of AgF directly on the PDMS surface. This enables the design of AgNP electrical networks on the PDMS foam surface with piezo-resistive properties tunable up to a factor of 1000. We leveraged the control of the piezoresistive properties of the AgNP electrical network formed on PDMS foams to fabricate flexible and wearable pressure sensors with sensitivity of 0.41 kPa^-1, an operation range >120 kPa, and a detection limit of 25 Pa. As a proof-of-concept application in wearable biomedical electronics, we successfully used the sensors to monitor the real-time radial artery pulse wave on the human wrist of a young male with high resolution.

Osmium Recovery as Membrane Nanomaterials through 10-Undecenoic Acid Reduction Method

The recovery of osmium from residual osmium tetroxide (OsO₄) is a necessity imposed by its high toxicity, but also by the technical-economic value of metallic osmium. An elegant and extremely useful method is the recovery of osmium as a membrane catalytic material, in the form of nanoparticles obtained on a polymeric support. The subject of the present study is the realization of a composite membrane in which the polymeric matrix is the polypropylene hollow fiber, and the active component consists of the osmium nanoparticles obtained by reducing an alcoholic solution of osmium tetroxides directly on the polymeric support. The method of reducing osmium tetroxide on the polymeric support is based on the use of 10-undecenoic acid (10-undecylenic acid) (UDA) as a reducing agent. The osmium tetroxide was solubilized in t-butanol and the reducing agent, 10-undecenoic acid (UDA), in i-propanol, t-butanol or n-decanol solution. The membranes containing osmium nanoparticles (Os-NP) were characterized morphologically by the following: scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution SEM (HR-SEM), structurally: energy-dispersive spectroscopy analysis (EDAX), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. In terms of process performance, thermal gravimetric analysis was performed by differential scanning calorimetry (TGA, DSC) and in a redox reaction of an organic marker, p-nitrophenol (PNP) to p-aminophenol (PAP). The catalytic reduction reaction with sodium tetraborate solution of PNP to PAP yielded a constant catalytic rate between 2.04 × 10^-4 mmol s^-1 and 8.05 × 10^-4 mmol s^-1.

Osmium Nanoparticles-Polypropylene Hollow Fiber Membranes Applied in Redox Processes

Composite membranes play a very important role in the separation, concentration, and purification processes, but especially in membrane reactors and membrane bioreactors. The development of composite membranes has gained momentum especially through the involvement of various nanoparticles, polymeric, oxide, or metal, that have contributed to increasing their reactivity and selectivity. This paper presents the preparation and characterization of an active metal nanoparticle-support polymer type composite membrane, based on osmium nanoparticles obtained in situ on a polypropylene hollow fiber membrane. Osmium nanoparticles are generated from a solution of osmium tetroxide in tert-butyl alcohol by reduction with molecular hydrogen in a contactor with a polypropylene membrane. The composite osmium-polypropylene hollow fiber obtained membranes (Os-PPM) were characterized from the morphological and structural points of view: scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high resolution SEM (HR-SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis (EDAX), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Fourier transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry (TGA, DSC). The process performance was tested in a redox process of p-nitrophenol and 10-undecylenic (10-undecenoic) acid, as a target substance of biological or biomedical interest, in solutions of lower aliphatic alcohols in a membrane contactor with a prepared composite membrane. The characteristics of osmium nanoparticles-polypropylene hollow fiber membranes open the way to biological and biotechnological applications. These membranes do not contaminate the working environment, operate at relatively low temperatures, provide a large contact area between reactants, allow successive oxidation and reduction operations in the same module, and help to recover the reaction mass by ultrafiltration. The results obtained show that the osmium-polypropylene composite membrane allows the reduction of p-nitrophenol or the oxidation of 10-undecylenic acid, the conversion depending on the concentration in the lower aliphatic alcohol, the nature of the lower aliphatic alcohol, and the oxidant or reducing flow through the membrane contactor.

Reactional Processes on Osmium-Polymeric Membranes for 5-Nitrobenzimidazole Reduction

Membranes are associated with the efficient processes of separation, concentration and purification, but a very important aspect of them is the realization of a reaction process simultaneously with the separation process. From a practical point of view, chemical reactions have been introduced in most membrane systems: with on-liquid membranes, with inorganic membranes or with polymeric and/or composite membranes. This paper presents the obtaining of polymeric membranes containing metallic osmium obtained in situ. Cellulose acetate (CA), polysulfone (PSf) and polypropylene hollow fiber membranes (PPM) were used as support polymer membranes. The metallic osmium is obtained directly onto the considered membranes using a solution of osmium tetroxide (OsO4), dissolved in tert–butyl alcohol (t–Bu–OH) by reduction with molecular hydrogen. The composite osmium–polymer (Os–P)-obtained membranes were characterized in terms of the morphological and structural points of view: scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution SEM (HR–SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy analysis (EDAX), Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The process performance was tested for reduction of 5–nitrobenzimidazole to 5–aminobenzimidazole with molecular hydrogen. The paper presents the main aspects of the possible mechanism of transformation of 5–nitrobenzimidazole to 5–aminobenzimidazole with hydrogen gas in the reaction system with osmium–polymer membrane (Os–P).

Universal gold nanoparticle modified hybrid monolithic substrate developed for facile in-column post-functionalization

Organic-inorganic hybrid monolithic columns, due to the comprehensive advantages, have been applied as promising solid-phase separation matrices for pretreatment of complex samples in biomedical and environmental analyses, however, a tremendous time and efforts are cost to optimize the preparation methods of hybrid monolithic columns with different functional groups for various target analytes. Herein, we proposed a strategy to develop basic hybrid monolithic column materials for flexible and facile post-functionalization. Three kinds of single-functionalized (amine, thiol, and carboxyl) and two kinds of bi-functionalized (amine and thiol, and amine and carboxyl) hybrid monolithic columns were immobilized with gold nanoparticles (GNPs) as intermediary bridge to construct the universal substrates. The GNPs adsorption capacities of the five hybrid monoliths were compared through qualitative characterization and quantitative analysis. Thioglycolic acid (TGA) and an aptamer against human α-thrombin were respectively used for further functionalizing the substrates to select the most suitable hybrid monolith for optional post-functionalization. It was reported for the first time that the coverage density of TGA on functionalized monolithic column modified by GNPs was 168.41 nmol μL^-1. Notably, the coverage density (2205.8 pmol μL^-1) of the aptamer decorated on the hybrid monolithic column was significantly higher than most other similar materials in published works. After that, the aptamer functionalized hybrid monolithic column screened out was applied for the solid-phase microextraction of thrombin, which possessed excellent adsorption selectivity in interference experiment. Consequently, the developed GNPs modified amine- and thiol-bi-functionalized hybrid monolithic column is an attractive universal substrate to realize easy and efficient post-modification of separation materials for other target analytes in complex samples avoiding a lot of time and labor consumption in the optimization of process preparation.

Biosynthesis of waste pistachio shell supported silver nanoparticles for the catalytic reduction processes

Silver nanoparticles (NPs) are immobilised on pistachio shell surface by Cichorium intybus L. leaves extract as an antioxidant media. The Fourier transform infrared spectra, X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscope analyses confirmed the support of silver NPs on the pistachio shell (Ag NPs/pistachio shell). Ag NPs on the pistachio shell had a diameter basically in the 10-15 nm range. Reduction reactions of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), and organic dyes at ambient condition were used in the investigation of the catalytic performance of the prepared catalyst. Through this research, the Ag NPs/pistachio shell shows a high activity and recyclability, and reusability without loss of its catalytic activity.

Solid supports for extraction and preconcentration of proteins and peptides in microfluidic devices: A review

Determination of proteins and peptides is among the main challenges of today's bioanalytical chemistry. The application of microchip technology in this field is an exhaustively developed concept that aims to create integrated and fully automated analytical devices able to quantify or detect one or several proteins from a complex matrix. Selective extraction and preconcentration of targeted proteins and peptides especially from biological fluids is of the highest importance for a successful realization of these microsystems. Incorporation of solid structures or supports is a convenient solution employed to face these demands. This review presents a critical view on the latest achievements in sample processing techniques for protein determination using solid supports in microfluidics. The study covers the period from 2006 to 2015 and focuses mainly on the strategies based on microbeads, monolithic materials and membranes. Less common approaches are also briefly discussed. The reviewed literature suggests future trends which are discussed in the concluding remarks.
