Structure and linear viscoelasticity of polymer nanocomposites with agglomerated particles

How surface modification of cellulose nanocrystals affects the crystallization process of poly (β-hydroxybutyrate)

Hydroxyl groups on the surface of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) are modified by chemical methods, CNC and the modified CNC are used as fillers to prepare PHB/cellulose nanocomposites. The absorption peak of carbonyl group of the modified CNC (CNC-CL and CNC-LA) appears in the FT-IR spectra, which proves that the modifications are successful. Thermal stability of CNC-CL and CNC-LA is better than that of pure CNC. Pure CNC is beneficial to the nucleation of PHB, while CNC-CL and CNC-LA inhibit the nucleation of PHB. The spherulite size of PHB and its nanocomposites increases linearly over time, and the maximum growth rate of PHB spherulite exists at 90 °C. Rheological analysis shows that viscous deformation plays the dominant role in PHB, PHBC and PHBC-CL samples, while the elastic deformation is dominant in PHBC-LA. According to the rheological data, the dispersion of CNC-CL and CNC-LA in PHB is better than that of CNC. This work demonstrates the impact of modified CNC on the crystallization and viscoelastic properties of PHB. Moreover, the interface enhancement effect of modified CNC on PHB/CNC nanomaterials is revealed from the crystallization and rheology perspectives.

From fundamental insights to rational (bio)polymer nanocomposite design - Connecting the nanometer to meter scale

Nanoparticle addition has the potential to make bioplastic use mainstream, as the resultant nanocomposite shows improved mechanical, barrier, and thermal properties. It is well established that the architecture and dynamics of the nanoparticle-polymer interphasial region, ∼ 1.5-9 nm from the nanoparticle surface, are crucial for nanocomposite characteristics. Yet, how these molecular phenomena translate to the bulk is still largely unknown. A multi-disciplinary and multi-scale vision is required to capture the full picture and improve materials far beyond what is currently possible. In this review, a first step in bridging the apparent gap between fundamental insights toward observed material properties is made. At the molecular scale, the polymer chain density and dynamics at the nanoparticle surface are governed by a complex interplay between enthalpy and entropy. The resultant interphasial properties can only be propagated to the macroscopic scale effectively when the nanoparticles are well-distributed. This makes the dispersion state a key parameter for which thermodynamic and kinetic insights can be used to prevent nanoparticle aggregation. These insights are linked to material properties relevant to packaging. The outlook section elaborates on the remaining challenges and the steps required to further understand and better design nanocomposite systems.

Sequestration of p-nitrophenol from liquid phase by poly(acrylonitrile-co-acrylic acid) containing thioamide group

In this paper, the adsorptive performance of synthesized thiourea (TU) modified poly(acrylonitrile-co-acrylic acid) (TU-P(AN-co-AA)) polymeric adsorbent for capturing p-nitrophenol (PNP) from aqueous solution was investigated. TU-P(AN-co-AA) was synthesized via the redox polymerization method with acrylonitrile (AN) and acrylic acid (AA) as the monomers, then modified chemically with thiourea (TU). Characterization analysis with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), elemental microanalysis for CHNS, zeta potential measurement, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface analysis and thermal analyses were carried out to determine the morphology and physico-chemical properties of the synthesized polymer. The characterization results indicated successful surface modification of polymer with TU. The performance of TU-P(AN-co-AA) for the removal of PNP was investigated under various experimental parameters (adsorbent dosage, initial adsorbate concentration, contact time and temperature). The results demonstrated that the Freundlich isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model best described the equilibrium and kinetic data, respectively. Thermodynamic studies showed that the uptake of PNP by TU-P(AN-co-AA) was spontaneous and exothermic in nature. The results of the regeneration studies suggested that the TU-P(AN-co-AA) polymer is a reusable adsorbent with great potential for removing PNP from wastewater.

Nonequilibrium Structure Diagram of Pendular Suspensions under Large-Amplitude Oscillatory Shear

For pendular suspensions with particles in contact with immiscible secondary liquid bridges, the shear field significantly influences particle aggregates and networks. In this work, we study the structure of the pendular network and how the structure changes under large-amplitude-oscillatory shear. Using rheology and optical microscopy, we found unique network destruction followed by reconstruction with increasing strain. Two processes show different shear-field dependencies, strain-rate dependency for destruction and strain dependency for reconstruction. A nonequilibrium state diagram is constructed to show the phase behavior, where the critical particle concentration of sol-gel transition is dependent on the shear history and may depend on shear strain nonmonotonically. Two different mechanisms, shear-induced network breakdown at low strain and shear-induced agglomeration at high strain, are suggested to describe the nonmonotonic critical concentration under the upward strain sweep quantitatively.

Cellulosic nanofibers filled poly(β-hydroxybutyrate): Relations between viscoelasticity of composites and aspect ratios of nanofibers

Dispersion states are vital for fibrous nanocelluloses to be used as reinforcements for polymers, which is highly dependent on geometry of nanocelluloses. Three types of nanocelluloses with various fiber aspect ratios were used to prepare target composite samples with poly(β-hydroxybutyrate) in this work. Viscoelasticity/elastoplasticity were used as probes to detect the flexibility-morphology relations of nanocelluloses in polymer. Cellulose nanocrystals (aspect ratio = 8) were rigid in polymer, retaining their rod-like shape, whereas bacterial celluloses (aspect ratio = 600) fully flexible, forming closely networked structure, and cellulose nanofibers (aspect ratio = 70) semi-flexible, dispersing as loosely flocculated clusters. Owing to these differences, the viscoelastic flow and elastoplastic deformation of three kinds of composites differed from one another. The strain-scaling and hysteresis work-scaling behaviors were then used to establish relaxation scale-structure correlations of target samples. This work provides interesting information around regulating the dispersion of nanocelluloses in polymer composites by tailoring aspect ratios of nanocelluloses.

Nanoparticle self-assembly: from interactions in suspension to polymer nanocomposites

Recent experimental results using in particular small-angle scattering to characterize the self-assembly of mainly hard spherical nanoparticles into higher ordered structures ranging from fractal aggregates to ordered assemblies are reviewed. The crucial control of interparticle interactions is discussed, from chemical surface-modification, or the action of additives like depletion agents, to the generation of directional patches and the use of external fields. It is shown how the properties of interparticle interactions have been used to allow inducing and possibly controlling aggregation, opening the road to the generation of colloidal molecules or potentially metamaterials. In the last part, studies of the microstructure of polymer nanocomposites as an application of volume-spanning and stress-carrying aggregates are discussed.

Reconsideration of the Rheology of Silica Filled Natural Rubber Compounds

There is substantial progress along with giant debate in reinforcement mechanisms in relation to structured filler network and heterogeneously retarded polymer dynamics, while the dissipation behaviors have never been clarified for nanoparticle filled polymers. Herein dynamic rheological behaviors of silica filled natural rubber were investigated. Master curves of linear rheology in the hydrodynamic regime and those of the nonlinear Payne effect at a predetermined frequency were created, disclosing a leading role of dynamically retarded bulk rubbery phase to the hydrodynamic regime and a leading role of molecular disentanglement in the bulk phase to the Payne effect. The methodology is able to account for both reinforcement and dissipation of the compounds as a function of filler content. Furthermore, a frequency-dependent hydrodynamic to non-hydrodynamic transition is revealed, revealing the importance of the relaxation of chains in the bulk phase to both reinforcement and dissipation of the compounds. It is suggested that the dynamics of the bulk phase play a critical role for the rheology in the hydrodynamic regime while the fractal filler aggregates become dominative only in the terminal non-hydrodynamic regime where the bulk phase relaxes sufficiently.

Cluster size distribution of spherical nanoparticles in polymer nanocomposites: rheological quantification and evidence of phase separation

Currently, it is a great challenge to characterize the dispersion quality of nanoparticles in nanocomposites through experimental techniques. In this work, we suggest a new rheological method based on the strain rate amplification effect to determine the cluster size distribution in polymer nanocomposites. The dispersion exponents of nanoparticles from this rheological method are in good agreement with the cluster analysis of transmission electron microscope (TEM) images. We also obtain a critical value of the dispersion exponent from the effective specific surface area of clusters, which separates the well-dispersed state and the phase-separated state. Our results indicate that rheology can be used as a convenient and effective structural analysis method to characterize the nanoparticle cluster size distribution in polymer nanocomposites.
