Morphology modeling for polymer monolith obtained by non-solvent-induced phase separation

Phase-separated porous nanocomposite with ultralow percolation threshold for wireless bioelectronics

Realizing the full potential of stretchable bioelectronics in wearables, biomedical implants and soft robotics necessitates conductive elastic composites that are intrinsically soft, highly conductive and strain resilient. However, existing composites usually compromise electrical durability and performance due to disrupted conductive paths under strain and rely heavily on a high content of conductive filler. Here we present an in situ phase-separation method that facilitates microscale silver nanowire assembly and creates self-organized percolation networks on pore surfaces. The resultant nanocomposites are highly conductive, strain insensitive and fatigue tolerant, while minimizing filler usage. Their resilience is rooted in multiscale porous polymer matrices that dissipate stress and rigid conductive fillers adapting to strain-induced geometry changes. Notably, the presence of porous microstructures reduces the percolation threshold (Vc = 0.00062) by 48-fold and suppresses electrical degradation even under strains exceeding 600%. Theoretical calculations yield results that are quantitatively consistent with experimental findings. By pairing these nanocomposites with near-field communication technologies, we have demonstrated stretchable wireless power and data transmission solutions that are ideal for both skin-interfaced and implanted bioelectronics. The systems enable battery-free wireless powering and sensing of a range of sweat biomarkers-with less than 10% performance variation even at 50% strain. Ultimately, our strategy offers expansive material options for diverse applications.

Cellulose/GO monolith covered with Pd-Pt bimetallic nanocrystals for continuous-flow catalytic reduction of hexavalent chromium

Cellulose monolith materials have interconnected open porous structures with very high porosity, making them attractive structures for use as support materials in heterogeneous catalysis applications. In this study, we developed a highly efficient and reusable continuous-flow reactor for Cr(VI) remediation by combining the advantageous features of cellulose monoliths with suitable reinforcement techniques. We fabricated a porous monolithic cellulose/graphene oxide (GO) composite with a continuous three-dimensional skeletal framework using the thermally induced phase separation technique. Pd nanocrystals were synthesized in situ on the surface of the composite monolith, and then converted to porous Pd-Pt bimetallic nanocrystals through a galvanic replacement reaction. This approach eliminated the need for additional reductants and stabilizers, making the process simpler and more environmentally friendly. Under carefully optimized conditions, the cellulose/GO/Pd-Pt nanocomposite monolith exhibited outstanding performance in continuous-flow reactions for Cr(VI) reduction, achieving a maximum conversion rate of 98 %. Moreover, the nanocomposite monolith-based heterogeneous catalyst exhibited remarkable long-term stability, maintaining its catalytic activity even after extended periods of storage in the dried state. These findings highlight the potential of cellulose-based composite monoliths as versatile and robust support materials for heterogeneous catalysis.

Pectin Nanoporous Structures Prepared via Salt-Induced Phase Separation and Ambient Azeotropic Evaporation Processes

Polysaccharide nanoporous structures are suitable for various applications, ranging from biomedical scaffolds to adsorption materials, owing to their biocompatibility and large surface areas. Pectin, in particular, can create 3D nanoporous structures in aqueous solutions by binding with calcium cations and creating nanopores by phase separation; this process involves forming hydrogen bonds between alcohols and pectin chains in water and alcohol mixtures and the resulting penetration of alcohols into calcium-bound pectin gels. However, owing to the dehydration and condensation of polysaccharide chains during drying, it has proven to be challenging to maintain the 3D nanoporous structure without using a freeze-drying process or supercritical fluid. Herein, we report a facile method for creating polysaccharide-based xerogels, involving the co-evaporation of water with a nonsolvent (e.g., a low-molecular-weight hydrophobic alcohol such as isopropyl or n-propyl alcohol) at ambient conditions. Experiments and coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations confirmed that salt-induced phase separation and hydrogen bonding between hydrophobic alcohols and pectin chains were the dominant processes in mixtures of pectin, water, and hydrophobic alcohols. Furthermore, the azeotropic evaporation of water and alcohol mixed in approximately 1:1 molar ratios was maintained during the natural drying process under ambient conditions, preventing the hydration and aggregation of the hydrophilic pectin chains. These results introduce a simple and convenient process to produce 3D polysaccharide xerogels under ambient conditions.

Robust Underwater Adhesion of Catechol-Functionalized Polymer Triggered by Water Exchange

Adhesives with strong and stable underwater adhesion performance play a critical role in industrial and biomedical fields. However, achieving strong underwater adhesion, especially in flowing aqueous and blood environments, remains challenging. In this work, a novel solvent-exchange-triggered adhesive of catechol-functionalized polyethylenimine ethoxylated is presented. The authors show that the dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solution of the catechol-functionalized polymer can be directly applied to various substrates and exhibits robust dry/underwater adhesion performance induced through in situ liquid-to-solid phase transition triggered by water-DMSO solvent exchange. The adhesive can even strongly bond low-surface-energy substrates (e.g., > 86 kPa for polytetrafluoroethylene) in diverse environments, including deionized water, air, phosphate-buffered saline solution, seawater, and aqueous conditions with different pH values. Moreover, the adhesive exhibits strong adhesion to biological tissues and can be used as a hemostatic sealant to prevent bleeding from arteries and severe trauma to the viscera. The adhesives developed in this study with strong dry/underwater adhesion performance and excellent hemostatic capabilities display enormous application prospects in the biomedical fields.

Phase-field simulation for the formation of porous microstructures due to phase separation in polymer solutions on substrates with different wettabilities

The porous microstructure has been widely observed in a variety of polymer solutions that have been broadly applied in many industry fields. Phase separation is one of the common mechanisms for the formation of the porous microstructure in binary polymeric mixtures. Previous studies for the formation of porous microstructures mostly focus on the separation of the bulk phase. However, there is a paucity of investigation for the phase separation of polymer mixtures contacting the solid substrate. When the polymeric liquid mixtures interact with the solid substrate, the wetting boundary condition has to be taken into account. In this work, we present a phase-field model which is coupled with the wetting boundary condition to study the phase separation in binary polymer solutions. Our consideration is based on the polymerization-induced phase separation, and thermally induced phase separation by using the Flory-Huggins model. By taking the wetting effect into account, we find that polymer droplets spontaneously occur in the microstructure, even though the bulk composition is outside the spinodal region. This phenomenon is caused by the surface composition resulting from the wetting effect that was often overlooked in literature. For the phase separation in the binary polymer mixture, we also study the impact of the temperature gradient on the microstructural evolution. The porosity, the number of droplets, and the mean radius of the droplets are rationalized with the temperature gradient.

Morphology Control and Metallization of Porous Polymers Synthesized by Michael Addition Reactions of a Multi-Functional Acrylamide with a Diamine

Porous polymers have been synthesized by an aza-Michael addition reaction of a multi-functional acrylamide, N,N',N″,N‴-tetraacryloyltriethylenetetramine (AM4), and hexamethylene diamine (HDA) in H2O without catalyst. Reaction conditions, such as monomer concentration and reaction temperature, affected the morphology of the resulting porous structures. Connected spheres, co-continuous monolithic structures and/or isolated holes were observed on the surface of the porous polymers. These structures were formed by polymerization-induced phase separation via spinodal decomposition or highly internal phase separation. The obtained porous polymers were soft and flexible and not breakable by compression. The porous polymers adsorbed various solvents. An AM4-HDA porous polymer could be plated by Ni using an electroless plating process via catalyzation by palladium (II) acetylacetonate following reduction of Ni ions in a plating solution. The intermediate Pd-catalyzed porous polymer promoted the Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling reaction of 4-bromoanisole and phenylboronic acid.

One-Pot Route towards Active TiO₂ Doped Hierarchically Porous Cellulose: Highly Efficient Photocatalysts for Methylene Blue Degradation

In this study, novel photocatalyst monolith materials were successfully fabricated by a non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) technique. By adding a certain amount of ethyl acetate (as non-solvent) into a cellulose/LiCl/N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) solution, and successively adding titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanoparticles (NPs), cellulose/TiO₂ composite monoliths with hierarchically porous structures were easily formed. The obtained composite monoliths possessed mesopores, and two kinds of macropores. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and Ultraviolet-visible Spectroscopy (UV-Vis) measurements were adopted to characterize the cellulose/TiO₂ composite monolith. The cellulose/TiO₂ composite monoliths showed high efficiency of photocatalytic activity in the decomposition of methylene blue dye, which was decomposed up to 99% within 60 min under UV light. Moreover, the composite monoliths could retain 90% of the photodegradation efficiency after 10 cycles. The novel NIPS technique has great potential for fabricating recyclable photocatalysts with highly efficiency.
