Deformation mechanism of iPP under uniaxial stretching over a wide temperature range: An in-situ synchrotron radiation SAXS/WAXS study

The Structural Evolution and Mechanical Properties of Semi-Aromatic Polyamide 12T after Stretching

The development of semi-aromatic polyamides with excellent mechanical properties has always been a popular research avenue. In this work, the semi-aromatic polyamide 12T (PA12T) with the maximum tensile strength of 465.5 MPa was prepared after stretching at 210 °C 4.6 times. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) were used to characterize the structural evolution of semi-aromatic polyamide 12T (PA12T) after stretching at different stretching temperatures and stretching ratios. The formation mechanism of this change in mechanical properties was investigated from different aspects of the aggregated structure such as crystal morphology, crystal orientation and crystallinity. The relevant characterization results show that the crystal structure, crystal orientation and crystallinity of PA12T were the highest when the sample was pre-stretched at 210 °C, which is crucial for improving the mechanical properties of PA12T. These findings will provide important guidance for the preparation of polymer materials with excellent mechanical properties.

Crystallization Behavior of Rapid-Compression-Induced Mesomorphic Isotactic Polypropylene during Uniaxial Stretching at Different Temperatures

The uniform bulk mesomorphic iPP is prepared by rapid compression, and its structural evolution under stretching at different temperatures is studied by combining wide-angle X-ray diffraction and small-angle X-ray scattering. Results show that stretching can induce mesophase to crystallize into α-phase or promote this phase transformation synergistically with temperature, which depends on the selection of stretching temperature. When the temperature is lower than the glass transition temperature of rigid amorphous fraction (RAF), stress could make RAF devitrify firstly and then induce meso-α phase transition during the strain-softening process. As the temperature increases, the high temperature could induce meso-α phase transition to occur before the strain softening, while stretching could promote this transition. When the temperature is higher than a critical value around 100°C, the mesophase can be transformed into α-phase completely during stretching. SAXS results show that all the transformed α-crystal exhibits nodular morphology, and they are ductile with greatly enhanced deformability. Based on the results, a reasonable mechanism of meso-α transformation in the stretching process is proposed, explaining the phase transition that goes through several different steps.

Microstructural Origin of the Double Yield Points of the Metallocene Linear Low-Density Polyethylene (mLLDPE) Precursor Film under Uniaxial Tensile Deformation

The microstructural origin of the double yield points of metallocene linear low-density polyethylene (mLLDPE) precursor films has been studied with the assistance of the synchrotron radiation small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS). It has been shown that the microstructural origin of the double yield points is highly related to the initial orientation of the original precursor film. For less oriented mLLDPE precursor films, the rearrangement of lamellae and the appearance of the monoclinic phase are the microstructural origins of the first yield point. In comparison, for the highly-oriented mLLDPE precursor film, only the orthorhombic-monoclinic phase transition appears at the first yield point. The melting-recrystallization and the formation of the fibrillary structure happen beyond the second yield point for all studied mLLDPE precursor films. Finally, the detailed microstructural evolution roadmaps of mLLDPE precursor films under uniaxial tensile deformation have been established, which might serve as a guide for processing high-performance polymer films by post-stretching.

Recent advances in post-stretching processing of polymer films with in situ synchrotron radiation X-ray scattering

The stretch-induced structural evolution mechanism is a long-standing scientific question in the post-stretching processing of polymer films. X-ray scattering, especially a combination of small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS), provides a powerful method to study the hierarchical structure of polymer films. Recent advances in synchrotron radiation (SR) light sources and detection techniques allow one to measure the structural evolution of polymer films during post-stretching processing in real time with ultrahigh time resolution, which benefits the understanding on this topic. This review summarizes some recent investigations on post-stretching processing of polymer films, which combine in situ X-ray scattering techniques with purposely designed tensile apparatus in terms of three aspects: uniaxial stretching, biaxial stretching and stretching with chemical reactions. Concerning the polymer bulk, traditional deformation mechanisms like stretch-induced crystallization (SIC), crystal slipping, phase transition and melting-recrystallization are discussed for the uniaxial and biaxial post-stretching of polymer films. New deformation models have been developed to focus on the structural evolution on the length scale of lamellar stacks, which consider the potential microphase separation of the interlamellar amorphous phase and microbuckling. For solution systems, the coupled effects of the mechanical work from external force and the chemical potential from possible chemical reactions are taken into account for the structural evolution during stretching in solution. Roadmaps of structural and morphological evolution in the processing parameter space (i.e., temperature, stress, strain and the concentration of additive in the bath solution) are eventually constructed for precursor films. The accumulation of a structural evolution database for post-stretching processing of polymer films can be expected to provide a helpful guide for industrial processing for high-performance polymers in the near future.

Structure Evolution and Deformation Behavior of Polyethylene Film during Biaxial Stretching

The structure evolution and deformation behavior of tenter-frame biaxially oriented polyethylene (TF-BOPE) films were investigated in this study. For sequential biaxial stretching, the original spherulites were broken into small pieces, and the fibrillar structure simultaneously formed during the machine direction (MD) stretching. Subsequently, the single fibrils were pulled away, and some fine fibrils developed via partial melting-recrystallization or lamellar rearrangement during the transverse direction (TD) stretching, which leads to the formation of the vein structure and nanosized fiber-like network. For simultaneous biaxial stretching, the fractured lamellae and the newly formed crystals were evenly distributed in the MD-TD plane like an isotropous fibrillar network. Moreover, compared with the unstretched sample, both films could achieve up to about 2 times the tensile modulus and 4.5 times the tensile strength and also exhibited the superior optical property.

Strain-induced crystal growth and molecular orientation of poly(isobutylene-isoprene) rubber at low temperatures

With the combination of a low-temperature extension rheometer and in situ synchrotron radiation wide-angle X-ray diffraction (SR-WAXD), the strain-induced crystallization (SIC) of poly(isobutylene-isoprene) rubber (IIR) was studied in the low-temperature region (-60 °C → 25 °C). The detailed structural evolution of IIR during the SIC is summarized in the strain-temperature space, where three distinct temperature zones are defined. The absence of the SIC in zone I (T > 0 °C) results in the poorest drawability of IIR among all measured temperatures. And with respect to the lowest temperature zone III (-60 °C < T < -50 °C), the SIC still occurs with low ultimate crystallinity (ca. 0.9%). More complicated structural evolution induced by the strain occurs in the intermediate-temperature zone II (-50 °C ≤ T ≤ 0 °C). The orientation ratio of the amorphous part Oa increases monotonically with the increment of the strain, but reaches a platform with Hencky strain ε > ca. 1.8. Meanwhile, the strain-induced crystal growth of IIR is evidenced by the dramatic increment of the lateral crystallite size of (110) and (113) planes. Moreover, the retraction experiment further reveals the network evolutions of IIR: suffering from low ultimate crystallinity (<ca. 9%), the network chain of IIR remains in series upon fracture. The current study clarifies the contribution of the SIC and molecular orientation to the self-enhanced mechanical properties of IIR at low temperatures.

Study on Crystallization Behaviors and Properties of F-III Fibers during Hot Drawing in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide

In order to obtain F-III fibers with high mechanical properties, pristine F-III fibers were hot drawn at the temperature of 250 °C, pressure of 14 MPa, tension of 6 g·d⁻¹, and different times, which were 15 min, 30 min, 45 min, 60 min, 75 min, 90 min, and 105 min, respectively, in supercritical carbon dioxide (Sc-CO₂) in this article. All the samples, including the pristine and treated F-III fibers, were characterized by a mechanical performance tester, wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results showed that the thermal stability of F-III fibers was enhanced to some extent, and the tensile strength and modulus of F-III fibers had great changes as the extension of treatment time during hot drawing in Sc-CO₂, although the treatment temperature was lower than the glass transition temperature (Tg) of F-III fibers. Accordingly, the phase fraction, orientation factor f_c of the (110) crystal plane, fibril length l_f, and misorientation angle B_φ of all the samples were also investigated. Fortunately, the hot drawing in Sc-CO₂ was successfully applied to the preparation of F-III fibers with high mechanical properties.

Deformation-induced structure evolution of poly(butylene terephthalate)/poly(carbonate) blends during uniaxial stretching

Phase separation occurs during deformation for all the PBT/PC samples. At large strains, microfibril slippage plays a leading role in the macroscopic strain.
