Phase Transition Thermodynamics of 1,3,5-Tris-(α-naphthyl)benzene: Theory and Experiment

1,3,5-Tris-(α-naphthyl)benzene is an organic non-electrolyte with notable stability of an amorphous phase. Its glassy and supercooled liquid states were previously studied by spectroscopic and calorimetric methods. Despite the continuing interest in its amorphous state and, particularly, vapor-deposited glasses, the thermodynamic parameters of the vaporization of 1,3,5-tris-(α-naphthyl)benzene have not been obtained yet. Likewise, the reliable evaluation of the thermodynamic parameters of fusion below the melting point, required to establish the thermodynamic state of its glass, is still an unsolved problem. In this work, the heat capacities of crystalline and liquid phases, the temperature dependence of the saturated vapor pressures, fusion and vaporization enthalpies were determined using differential and fast scanning calorimetry and were verified using the estimates based on solution calorimetry. The structural features of 1,3,5-tris-(α-naphthyl)benzene are discussed based on the computations performed and the data on the molecular refractivity. The consistency between the values obtained by independent techniques was demonstrated.

Effect of Fiber Loading on Thermal Properties of Cellulosic Washingtonia Reinforced HDPE Biocomposites

In this research work, we aim to study the effect of the incorporation of vegetable fiber reinforcement on the thermo-mechanical and dynamic properties of a composite formed by a polymeric matrix reinforced with cellulosic fibers with the various Washingtonia fiber (WF) loadings (0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% by wt%) as reinforced material in high-density polyethylene (HDPE) Biocomposites to evaluate the optimum fiber loading of biocomposites. In addition, several characterization techniques (i.e., thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and thermal mechanical analysis (TMA)) were used to better understand the characteristics of the new composites prepared. With these techniques, we managed to verify the rigidity and thermal stability of the composites so elaborated, as well as the success of the polymer and the structural homogeneity of the obtained biocomposites. Hence, the biocomposite with the best ratio (HDPE/20WF) showed a loss modulus (E″) of 224 MPa, a storage modulus (E') of 2079 MPa, and a damping factor (Tanδ) of 0.270 to the glass transition (Tg) of 145 °C. In addition, thermomechanical analysis (TMA) of the biocomposite samples exhibited marginally higher Ts compared to the HDPE matrix. The best results were recorded with biocomposites with 20% WF, which showed better thermal properties. This composite material can be used as insulation in construction materials (buildings, false ceilings, walls, etc.).

Influence of Fusion Temperature on Nonisothermal Crystallization Kinetics of Polyamide 6

The effect of fusion temperature and duration on the nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of polyamide 6 (PA6) was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and a polarized optical microscope (OM). The rapid cooling method involved heating the polymer above its melting point, holding it at this temperature to ensure complete melting, and then rapidly cooling it to the crystallization temperature. By monitoring the heat flow during cooling, the crystallization kinetics of PA6 were characterized, including the degree of crystallinity, crystallization temperature, and crystallization rate. The study found that changing the fusion temperature and duration significantly impacted the crystallization kinetics of PA6. Increasing the fusion temperature decreased the degree of crystallinity, with smaller nucleation centers requiring a higher degree of supercooling for crystallization. The crystallization temperature shifted towards lower temperatures, and the crystallization kinetics slowed down. The study also found that lengthening the fusion time raised the relative crystallinity, but any further increase did not result in a significant change. The study showed that an increase in fusion temperature led to a longer time needed to reach a given level of crystallinity, reducing the crystallization rate. This can be explained by the thermodynamics of the crystallization process, where higher temperatures promote molecular mobility and crystal growth. Moreover, the study revealed that decreasing a polymer's fusion temperature can lead to a greater degree of nucleation and faster growth of the crystalline phase, which can significantly impact the values of the Avrami parameters used to characterize the crystallization kinetics.

Determination of Melting Parameters of Cyclodextrins Using Fast Scanning Calorimetry

The first evidence of native cyclodextrins fusion was registered using fast scanning calorimetry (FSC) with heating rates up to 40,000 K s-1. The endothermal effects, detected at low heating rates, correspond to the decomposition processes. Upon the increase of the heating rate the onset of these effects shifts to higher temperatures, reaching a limiting value at high heating rates. The limiting temperatures were identified as the melting points of α-, β- and γ-cyclodextrins, as the decomposition processes are suppressed at high heating rates. For γ-cyclodextrin the fusion enthalpy was measured. The activation energies of thermal decomposition of cyclodextrins were determined by dependence of the observed thermal effects on heating rates from 4 K min-1 in conventional differential scanning calorimetry to 40,000 K s-1 in FSC. The lower thermal stability and activation energy of decomposition of β-cyclodextrin than for the other two cyclodextrins were found, which may be explained by preliminary phase transition and chemical reaction without mass loss. The obtained values of fusion parameters of cyclodextrins are needed in theoretical models widely used for prediction of solubility and solution rates and in preparation of cyclodextrin inclusion compounds involving heating.

The melting properties of D-α-glucose, D-β-fructose, D-sucrose, D-α-galactose, and D-α-xylose and their solubility in water: A revision

Saccharides are still commonly isolated from biological feedstock by crystallization from aqueous solutions. Precise thermodynamic data on solubility are essential to optimize the downstream crystallization process. Solubility modeling, in turn, requires knowledge of melting properties. In the first part of this work, following our previous work on amino acids and peptides, D-α-glucose, D-β-fructose, D-sucrose, D-α-galactose, and D-α-xylose were investigated with Fast Scanning Calorimetry (FSC) in a wide scanning rate range (2000 K·s−1 to 10000 K·s−1). Using the experimental melting properties of saccharides from FSC allowed successfully modeling aqueous solubility for D-sucrose and D-α-galactose with the equation of state PC-SAFT. This provides cross-validation of the measurement methods to determine accurate experimental melting properties with FSC. Unexpectedly, the experimental FSC melting temperatures, extrapolated to zero scanning rates for thermal lag correction, were higher than results determined with DSC and available literature data. To clarify this inconsistency, FSC measurements towards low scanning rates from 10000 K·s−1 to 1 K·s−1 (D-α-glucose, D-β-fructose, D-sucrose) overlapping with the scanning rates of DSC and literature data were combined. At scanning rates below 1000 K·s−1, the melting properties followed a consistent non-linear trend, observed in both the FSC and the literature data. In order to understand the non-linear decrease of apparent melting temperatures with decreasing heating rate, the endothermic peaks were investigated in terms of isoconversional kinetics. The activation energies in the non-linear dependency region are in the range of $$300<{E}_{A}< 600 {\text{kJ}}\bullet {\text{mo}}{\text{l}}^{-1}$$ 300 < E A < 600 kJ ∙ mol - 1 . These values are higher than the enthalpy of sublimation for D-α-glucose, indicating that the non-linear behavior does not have a physical nature but attributes to chemical processes corresponding to the decomposition of molecular compounds within the crystal lattice before melting. The melting properties reported in the literature, commonly determined with conventional methods such as DSC, lead to inaccurate results due to the decomposition of these biomolecules at low heating rates. In addition, the FSC results at lower scanning rates coincide with results from DSC and literature in the overlapping scanning rate range, further validating the accuracy of FSC measurements to determine reliable melting properties of thermally labile biomolecules. The experimental FSC melting properties determined at higher scanning rates are considered as the correct equilibrium melting properties, which are not influenced by any chemical processes. The combination of FSC and PC-SAFT opens the door to model solubility of solid compounds that commonly decompose before melting.

Unravelling the nature of citric acid:L-arginine:water mixtures: the bifunctional role of water

The use of water as a component of deep eutectic systems (DES) has raised some questions regarding its influence on the nature of the mixture. Does it form a DES or an aqueous solution and what is the role of water? In this work, the nature of citric acid:l-arginine:water mixtures was explored through phase equilibria studies and spectroscopic analysis. In a first step, PC-SAFT was validated as a predictive tool to model the water influence on the solid liquid equilibria (SLE) of the DES reline using the individual-component approach. Hence, activity coefficients in the ternary systems citric acid:l-arginine:water and respective binary combinations were studied and compared using ePC-SAFT. It was observed that the water-free mixtures citric acid:l-arginine showed positive deviation from Raoult's law, while upon addition of water strong negative deviation from Raoult's law was found, yielding melting depressions around 100 K. Besides these strong interactions, pH was found to become acidic (pH = 3.5) upon water addition, which yields the formation of charged species ([H2Cit]- and [l-arg]+). Thus, the increased interactions between the molecules upon water addition might be caused by several mechanisms such as hydrogen bonding or ionic forces, both being induced by water. For further investigation, the liquid mixtures citric acid:l-arginine:water were studied by FTIR and NMR spectroscopy. FTIR spectra disproved a possible solubility enhancement caused by salt formation between citric acid and l-arginine, while NMR spectra supported the formation of a hydrogen bonding network different from the binary systems citric acid:water and l-arginine:water. Either being a DES or other type of non-ideal solution, the liquefaction of the studied systems is certainly caused by a water-mediator effect based on the formation of charged species and cross interactions between the mixture constituents.

Synthesis, crystallization, and molecular mobility in poly(ε-caprolactone) copolyesters of different architectures for biomedical applications studied by calorimetry and dielectric spectroscopy

In this work, we synthesized poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and three copolyesters of different architectures based on three different alcohols, namely a three arm-copolymer based on 1% glycerol (PCL_Gly), a four arm-copolymer based on 1% pentaerythrytol (PCL_PE), and a linear block copolymer based on ∼50% methoxy-poly(ethylene glycol) (PCL_mPEG), all simultaneously with the ring opening polymerization (ROP) of PCL. Due to their biocompatibility and low toxicity, these systems are envisaged for use in drug delivery and tissue engineering applications. Due to the in situ ROP during the copolyesters synthesis, the molecular weight of PCL, Wm initially ∼62 kg mol-1, drops in the copolymers from ∼60k down to ∼5k. For the structure-properties investigation we employed differential scanning calorimetry (DSC and TMDSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Fourier transform infra red (FTIR) spectroscopy, polarized optical microscopy (POM), broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) and isothermal water sorption. DSC revealed that the crystalline fraction of PCL increases whereas the crystallization rate drops in the copolymers in the order PCL ∼ PCL_Gly > PCL_PE ≫ PCL_mPEG, which coincides with that of decreasing Wm. In PCL_mPEG the major amount of PCL (87%) was found to crystallize while the majority of mPEG (92%) was found amorphous exhibiting constrained amorphous mobility and severely slower/weaker crystallization as compared to neat mPEG. Segmental dynamics in BDS, in agreement with DSC, is similar and in general slow for the samples of star-like structure for Wm ≥ 30k arising from PCL, whereas it is severely faster and enhanced in strength for the linear PCL_mPEG (lower Wm) copolymer arising from mPEG. For the latter system, the data provide indications for the formation of complex structures consisting of many small PCL crystallites surrounded by amorphous mPEG segments with constrained dynamics and severely suppressed hydrophilicity. These effects cannot be easily assessed by conventional XRD and POM, confirming the power of the dielectric technique. The overall recordings indicated that the different polymer architecture results in severe changes in the semicrystalline morphology, which demonstrates the potential for tuning the final product performance (permeability, mechanical).

Melting properties of amino acids and their solubility in water

The state-of-the-art unit operation for separation and purification of amino acids is still crystallization, which requires solubility data and melting properties of pure compounds. Since measuring solubility is time-consuming, prediction tools are desired. Further, melting properties are not yet available due to decomposition of amino acids upon slow heating. In this work, melting properties of twenty amino acids (except Met) were measured by Fast Scanning Calorimetry (FSC) with heating rates up to 20 000 K s⁻¹. PC-SAFT was used to predict interactions in amino acid + water systems. Additionally, solubility, pH, and PXRD was measured. By combining FSC and PC-SAFT, the solubility of 15 amino acids was successfully predicted in a wide temperature range in good agreement with the experimental data. Thus, this work provides melting properties of amino acids for the first time and highlights the usefulness of such data to predict material properties such as aqueous solubility of amino acids.

Melting of nucleobases. Getting the cutting edge of "Walden's Rule"

Walden's Rule is an empirical observation of an invariant fusion entropy during fusion of non-associated organic compounds. For the five nucleobases, adenine, thymine, cytosine, guanine, and uracil, surprisingly high fusion temperatures and enthalpies have been measured using a specially developed fast scanning calorimetry method that prevents decomposition. Even when nucleobases admittedly possess very high fusion temperatures, e.g. the value of 862 K measured for guanine really exceeds all expectations of the feasible dimension of the fusion temperature for such a relatively small and simple organic molecule. Hirshfeld surface analysis has been applied in order to find out an explanation for such extremely unusual thermal behavior of nucleobases. We rationalized the observed trends in terms of fusion entropy (Walden's constant = 56.5 J K^-1 mol^-1) as the entropic penalty of fusion not only for "non-associated", as proposed by Walden in 1908, but also for "ideal associated" systems like nucleobases.

Non-Isothermal Crystallisation Kinetics of Carbon Black- Graphene-Based Multimodal-Polyethylene Nanocomposites

The effect of carbon black (CB) and microwave-induced plasma graphene (g) on the crystallisation kinetics of the multimodal high-density polyethylene was studied under non-isothermal conditions. The non-isothermal crystallisation behaviour of the multimodal-high-density polyethylene (HDPE), containing up to 5 wt.% graphene, was compared with that of neat multimodal-HDPE and its carbon black based nanocomposites. The results suggested that the non-isothermal crystallisation behaviour of polyethylene (PE)-g nanocomposites relied significantly on both the graphene content and the cooling rate. The addition of graphene caused a change in the mechanism of the nucleation and the crystal growth of the multimodal-HDPE, while carbon black was shown to have little effect. Combined Avrami and Ozawa equations were shown to be effective in describing the non-isothermal crystallisation behaviour of the neat multimodal-HDPE and its nanocomposites. The mean activation energy barrier (ΔE), required for the transportation of the molecular chains from the melt state to the growing crystal surface, gradually diminished as the graphene content increased, which is attributable to the nucleating agent effect of graphene platelets. On the contrary, the synergistic effect resulting from the PE-CB nanocomposite decreased the ΔE of the neat multimodal-HDPE significantly at the lowest carbon black content.

Melting properties of peptides and their solubility in water. Part 1: dipeptides based on glycine or alanine

Melting properties (melting temperature, melting enthalpy and heat capacity difference between liquid and solid phase) of biomolecules are indispensable for natural and engineering sciences. The direct determination of these melting properties by using conventional calorimeters for biological compounds is often not possible due to decomposition during slow heating. In the current study this drawback is overcome by using fast scanning calorimetry (FSC) to directly measure the melting properties of five dipeptides (glycyl-glycine, glycyl-l-alanine, l-alanyl-glycine, l-alanyl-l-alanine and cyclo(l-alanyl-glycine)). The experimental melting properties were used as inputs into a thermodynamic solid–liquid equilibrium relation to predict solubility of the dipeptides in water. The required activity coefficients were predicted with PC-SAFT using solubility-independent model parameters. PC-SAFT predicted different solubility profiles (solubility vs. temperature) of isomers. The predictions were validated by new experimental solubility data, and the crystal structure of the dipeptides in saturated solution was verified by X-ray diffraction. The different water solubility profiles of isomers (glycyl-l-alanine and l-alanyl-glycine) were found to be caused by the big difference in the melting enthalpy of the two dipeptides. To conclude, combining the PC-SAFT and FSC methods allows for accurate prediction of dipeptide solubility in water in a wide temperature range without the need to fit any model parameters to experimental solubility data.

Statistical Optimization of the Sol-Gel Electrospinning Process Conditions for Preparation of Polyamide 6/66 Nanofiber Bundles

Polymeric nanofibers are widely studied in the textile industry since with them, it is possible to get a great variety of functionalities. In this paper, polyamide 6/66 (PA 6/66) solutions at different concentrations (12, 17, and 22% wt.) were made, to get nanofibers through the basic electrospinning process which were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and productivity. Afterwards, nanofiber bundles were produced using the electrospinning sol-gel process, which were characterized by SEM and tensile test. From the results of statistical optimization based on one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with post hoc Tukey HSD, it was found that nanofiber bundles with higher productivity (1.39 ± 0.15 mg/min), draw ratio (9.0 ± 1.2), and tensile strength (29.64 ± 7.40 MPa) were obtained with a 17% concentration. Finally, a thermal characterization through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was done, finding evidence of a T_g and T_m reduction in the nanofibers in relation to PA 6/66 pellets and nanofiber bundles.

Fast scanning calorimetry of lysozyme unfolding at scanning rates from 5 K/min to 500,000 K/min

BACKGROUND

Protein denaturation is often studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). However, conventional instruments are limited in the temperature scanning rate available. Fast scanning calorimetry (FSC) provides an ability to study processes at much higher rates while using extremely small sample masses [ng]. This makes it a very interesting technique for protein investigation.

METHODS

A combination of conventional DSC and fast scanning calorimeters was used to study denaturation of lysozyme dissolved in glycerol. Glycerol was chosen as a solvent to prevent evaporation from the micro-sized samples of the fast scanning calorimeter.

RESULTS

The lysozyme denaturation temperatures in the range of scanning rates from 5 K/min to ca. 500,000 K/min follow the Arrhenius law. The experimental results for FSC and conventional DSC fall into two distinct clusters in a Kissinger plot, which are well approximated by two parallel straight lines.

CONCLUSIONS

The transition temperatures for the unfolding process measured on fast scanning calorimetry sensor are significantly lower than what could be expected from the results of conventional DSC using extrapolation to high scanning rates. Evidence for the influence of the relative surface area on the unfolding temperature was found.

GENERAL SIGNIFICANCE

For the first time, fast scanning calorimetry was employed to study protein denaturation with a range of temperature scanning rates of 5 orders of magnitude. Decreased thermal stability of the micro-sized samples on the fast scanning calorimeter raise caution over using bulk solution thermal stability data of proteins for applications where micro-sized dispersed protein solutions are used, e.g., spray drying.

Photoinduced Reactions of Benzophenone in Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene

The photoinduced reactions of benzophenone (B) in biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) were studied with nanosecond laser photolysis (N₂ laser, λ337.1 nm). The first observed transient was a triplet state ³B*. Decay of ³B* led to formation of a radical pair (RP) of BH^• and R^•, where R^• is a radical formed by hydrogen abstraction from BOPP (RH) by ³B*. We studied BOPP after the preheating for a short time in a temperature range 298-423 K, which is essentially lower than its melting point of 453 K. All measurements with not-heated and with preheated (annealed) BOPP were made at 298 K. A radical pair (RP) apparently decays as a contact pair ³[BH^•, R^•] in nonheated BOPP. A critical phenomenon takes place: dissociation of RP with a formation of free radicals in the polymer bulk is observed at preheating temperature T_crit ≈ 403 K and at a higher T. The physical process of heating and cooling of BOPP apparently resulted in the restructuring of crystallites, their agglomeration, shrinking of the distribution of crystallites according to their sizes in BOPP. Overall BOPP becomes softer which manifests itself in the radical kinetics. The decay kinetics of ³B* and RP in the cage fits well the first-order law. Rate constants were obtained. Radicals BH^•, which exit into the polymer bulk at temperatures of preheating T ≥ 403 K, decay by cross-termination according to the second-order law. A relatively high rate constant ∼10⁸ M^-1·s^-1 for this reaction was obtained due to diffusion of BH^• enclosed in the soft amorphous phase of BOPP. Properties of BOPP containing B were studied with ESR, DSC, IR, and WAXD.
