Abstract
In order to prepare polyimide (PI) films with a low dielectric constant and excellent comprehensive performance, a two-step method was employed in this study to integrate β-cyclodextrin into a semi-aromatic fluorine-containing polyimide ternary system. By introducing trifluoromethyl groups to reduce the dielectric constant, the dielectric constant was further reduced to 2.55 at 10 MHz. Simultaneously, the film exhibited noteworthy thermal stability (a glass transition temperature exceeding 300 °C) and a high coefficient of thermal expansion. The material also demonstrated outstanding mechanical properties, boasting a strength of 122 MPa and a modulus of 2.2 GPa, along with high optical transparency (transmittance reaching up to 89% at 450 nm). Moreover, the inherent high transparency of colorless polyimide (CPI) combined with good stretchability contributed to the attainment of a low dielectric constant. This strategic approach not only opens up new opportunities for novel electroactive polymers but also holds potential applications in flexible displays, circuit printing, and chip packaging.

Abstract
Six poly(amic acid)s (PAAs) were synthesized by reacting bis(3-aminophenyl) sulfone with various dianhydride monomers such as pyromellitic dianhydride, 4,4'-biphthalic anhydride, dicyclohexyl-3,4,3',4'-tetracarboxylic dianhydride, 4,4'-oxidiphthalic anhydride, 3,3',4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride, and 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphthalic anhydride. These PAAs were then converted to polyimide (PI) films by thermal imidization at various temperatures. To obtain colorless and transparent PI (CPI), the dianhydride monomer used in this study had an overall bent structure, a structure containing a strong electron-withdrawing -CF3 substituent or an alicyclic ring. In addition, some monomers contained ether or ketone functional groups in their bent structures. The thermomechanical properties, optical transparency, and solubility of CPI films with six different dianhydride monomer structures were investigated, and the correlation between the monomer structure and CPI film properties was clarified. Overall, CPI with an aromatic main chain structure or a linear structure had excellent thermal and mechanical properties. In contrast, CPI with a bent structure containing functional groups or substituents in the main chain exhibited excellent optical transparency and solubility.

Abstract
In this paper, novel colorless polyimides (PIs) derived from 5,5'-bis(2,3-norbornanedicarboxylic anhydride) (BNBDA) were presented. The results of single-crystal X-ray structural analysis using a BNBDA-based model compound suggested that it had a unique steric structure with high structural linearity. Therefore, BNBDA is expected to afford new colorless PI films with an extremely high glass transition temperature (Tg) and a low linear coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) when combined with aromatic diamines with rigid and linear structures (typically, 2,2'-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzidine (TFMB)). However, the polyaddition of BNBDA and TFMB did not form a PI precursor with a sufficiently high molecular weight; consequently, the formation of a flexible, free-standing PI film via the two-step process was inhibited because of its brittleness. One-pot polycondensation was also unsuccessful in this system because of precipitation during the reaction, probably owing to the poor solubility of the initially yielded BNBDA/TFMB imide oligomers. The combinations of (1) the structural modification of the BNBDA/TFMB system, (2) the application of a modified one-pot process, in which the conditions of the temperature-rising profile, solvents, azeotropic agent, catalysts, and reactor were refined, and (3) the optimization of the film preparation conditions overcame the trade-off between low CTE and high film toughness and afforded unprecedented PI films with well-balanced properties, simultaneously achieving excellent optical transparency, extremely high Tg, sufficiently high thermal stability, low CTE, high toughness, relatively low water uptake, and excellent solution processability.

Abstract
Advanced aerogel materials with low thermal conductivity and high transparency have shown great application prospects in the solar thermal energy conversion field. However, most aerogels do not meet these requirements due to their low optical transparency and poor mechanical properties. To tackle this problem, we have created versatile polyimide (PI) aerogel materials by adjusting the monomers to alter their molecular structure. These materials exhibit exceptional thermal insulation properties and high transparency, making them ideal for use in the construction of efficient solar collector devices. Incorporating 1,3,5-benzenetricarbonyl trichloride into PI aerogel results in high strength (>3 MPa) and excellent transmittance (>90%) over a broad range of wavelengths (500-2650 nm). The as-prepared PI aerogel solar collector (PIASC) also exhibits a low thermal conductivity (0.032 W/mK), a low density (0.1 g/cm3), and high porosity (90%). By changing the shape of the collector from a flat plate to a cylindrical ring, the heat collection efficiency and capacity are significantly improved, resulting in efficient heat collection. The circular ring collector has a maximum heat collection temperature of 236.8 °C. The PIASC, which is both flexible and highly transparent, is an ideal candidate for advanced optical elements and solar collectors.

Abstract
High-quality and free-standing polyimide (PI) film with desirable mechanical properties and uniformity is in high demand due to its widespread applications in highly precise flexible and chip-integrated sensors. In this study, a free-standing PI film with high toughness was successfully prepared using a diamine monomer with ether linkages. The prepared PI films exhibited significantly superior mechanical properties compared to PI films of the same molecular structure, which can be attributed to the systematic exploration of the film-forming process. The exploration of the film-forming process includes the curing procedures, film-forming substrates, and annealing treatments. Additionally, the thickness uniformity and surface homogeneity of free-standing films were crucial for toughness. Increasing the crystallinity of the PI films by eliminating residual stress also contributed to their high strength. The results demonstrate that by adjusting the above-mentioned factors, the prepared PI films possess excellent mechanical properties, with tensile strength and elongation at break of 194.71 MPa and 130.13%, respectively.

Abstract
Colorless polyimides (CPIs) with outstanding mechanical properties are essential materials in the production of flexible display panels, foldable windows, and even spacecraft cockpits. This paper specifically elaborates that the Morkit unit, and azo and nitro chromophores are important factors contributing to yellow PI, together with the well-known charge transfer complex (CTC) theory. Three diamine monomers, two anhydrides monomers, and three blockers were used to inhibit chromophores formation and, thus, obtain CPI films. The cut-off wavelength was blue-shifts to 334 nm and the transmittance is improved to 98.9% in the UV–vis range. Mechanical and thermal properties of the CPI films are not reduced through coupling effects of the blockers. Therefore, the inhibition method of the Morkit units and chromophore groups is a promising process for preparing CPIs to be used as flexible display materials.

Intrinsically Negative Photosensitive Polyimides with Enhanced High-Temperature Dimensional Stability and Optical Transparency for Advanced Optical Applications via Simultaneous Incorporation of Trifluoromethyl and Benzanilide Units: Preparation and Properties. Polymers (Basel) 2022; 14:polym14183733. Abstract
Negative photosensitive polyimides (PSPIs) with the photo-patterned ability via the photocrosslinking reactions induced by the i-line (365 nm) and h-line (426 nm) emitting wavelengths in high-pressure mercury lamps have been paid increasing attention in semiconductor fabrication, optical fiber communications, and other advanced optoelectronic areas. In the current work, in view of the optical and thermo-mechanical disadvantages of the currently used negative PSPIs, such as the intrinsically photosensitive or auto-photosensitive systems derived from 3,3’,4,4’-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) and the ortho-alkyl- substituted aromatic diamines, a series of modified negative PSPIs with the enhanced optical transparency in the wavelength of 365~436 nm and apparently reduced coefficients of linear thermal expansion (CTE) were developed. For this purpose, a specific aromatic diamine with both of trifluoromethyl and benzanilide units in the molecular structures, 2,2’-bis(trifluoromethyl)-4,4’-bis[4-(4-amino-3-methyl)benzamide]biphenyl (MABTFMB) was copolymerized with BTDA and the standard 3,3’,5,5’-tetramethyl-4,4’-diaminodiphenylmethane (TMMDA) diamine via a two-step chemical imidization procedure. As compared with the pristine PI-1 (BTDA-TMMDA) system, the new-developed fluoro-containing PSPI systems (FPI-2~FPI-7) exhibited the same-level solubility in polar aprotic solvents, including N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and N,N- dimethylacetamide (DMAc). The FPI films cast from the corresponding FPI solutions in NMP showed the optical transmittances of 78.3–81.3% at the wavelength of 436 nm (T436, h-line), which were much higher than that of the PI-1 (T436 = 60.9%). The FPI films showed the CTE values in the range of 40.7 × 10−6/K to 54.0 × 10−6/K in the temperature range of 50 to 250 °C, which were obviously lower than that of PI-1 (CTE = 56.5 × 10−6/K). At last, the photosensitivity of the FPI systems was maintained and the micro-pattern with the line width of 10 μm could be clearly obtained via the standard photolithography process of FPI-7 with the molar ratio of 50% for MABTFMB in the diamine moiety.

Abstract
In this work, a copolyimide (Co-PI) film with high transparency was prepared by the copolymerization of hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA), 3,3′,4,4′-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA), 2,2′-Bis(trifluoromethyl)benzidine (TFMB) and adamantane-1,3-diamine (DAA). The effects of DAA monomers on the optical, thermal, and mechanical properties of the co-PIs were discussed in detail. We found that the preparation of polyimide (PI) based on the combination of two dianhydrides and two diamines could obtain the co-PI film with excellent comprehensive performance due to the synergy between the -CF3 group, the aliphatic ring and the aromatic structure. Through the structure and composition optimization, the co-PI film with 1.30% DAA (Q3) has a Tg of 374oC, T5 higher than 530oC, T430 of 82% and the tensile strength higher than 145 MPa. These results indicate that the Co-PI films can be successfully utilized in the development of novel heat-resistant plastic substrates for the optoelectronic engineering applications.

Solution-Processable Colorless Polyimides Derived from Hydrogenated Pyromellitic Dianhydride: Strategies to Reduce the Coefficients of Thermal Expansion by Maximizing the Spontaneous Chain Orientation Behavior during Solution Casting. Polymers (Basel) 2022; 14:polym14061131. Abstract
In this study, practically useful colorless polyimides (PIs) with low coefficients of thermal expansion (CTEs) and other desirable properties were prepared from hydrogenated pyromellitic dianhydride (1-exo,2-exo,4-exo,5-exo-cyclohexanetetracarboxylic dianhydride, H-PMDA). A modified one-pot polymerization method afforded a high-molecular-weight PI with sufficient film-forming ability from 2,2′-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzidine (TFMB) with a rod-like structure and H-PMDA. However, the PI film cast from its homogeneous solution did not have low CTEs, similar to the analogous system using meta-tolidine. To solve this problem, a series of amide- and amide-imide-containing diamines were designed and synthesized. The modified one-pot polymerization of H-PMDA and the diamines in γ-butyrolactone produced homogeneous, viscous, and stable solutions of high-molecular-weight PIs with high solid contents. The cast films of certain systems examined in this study simultaneously achieved low CTEs, high optical transparency, considerably high glass transition temperatures (Tgs), and sufficient ductility. A possible mechanism for the generation of low CTEs, which is closely related to the spontaneous in-plane orientation behavior during solution casting, was proposed. Certain H-PMDA-based PIs developed in this study are promising colorless heat-resistant plastic substrates for use in image display devices and other optical applications.

Abstract
A new aromatic unsymmetrical diamine containing imidazolyl and trifluoromethyl groups, 1,2-bis(4-aminophenyl)-4,5-bis(4-trifluoromethylphenyl)-1H-imidazole was synthesized. A series of novel fluorinated polyimides (PIs) were prepared by polycondensation of this diamine monomer with various aromatic dianhydrides via one-step process. The resulting PIs bearing inherent viscosities of 0.45–0.61 dL/g were amorphous and readily soluble in organic polar solvents such as NMP, DMF, DMAc, THF, and CHCl3. These new PIs exhibited good thermal stability with 10% weight loss temperatures of 530–560°C and char yields of 61–65% at 800°C in nitrogen, as well as good flame retardancy with limited oxygen index value of 40.6–42.8, and outstanding hydrophobicity with the contact angle of 85.2–93.5°. Meanwhile, all the obtained PIs exhibited low water uptake of 0.30–0.53%, strong UV-vis absorption in the range of 267–310 nm in DMF solution, and their films presented high optical transparency with a cut-off wavelength in the 355–392 nm range. Except for the PI film derived from pyromellitic dianhydride, the other PI films had the tensile strength in the range of 53.2–74.1 MPa, elongation at breakage of 6–15%, and tensile modulus of 1.0–1.5 GPa, respectively.

Abstract
To fully understand the structure–property relationship of aromatic copoly(amide-imide)s (Co-PAIs) and determine which factors lead to chain rigidity, we prepared two series of Co-PAIs. They were synthesized from two types of amine monomers containing m- and p-isomers and different ratios of 4,4′-(hexafluoroiso-propylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) and 4,4′-biphthalic anhydride (BPA). m-Substituted and p-substituted N,N′-[2,2′-bis(trifluoromethyl)-4,4′-biphenylene]bis(aminobenzamide) (MPAB) diamine isomers were synthesized from 3- and 4-nitrobenzoyl chloride and 2,2′-bis(trifluoromethyl) benzidine (TFB), respectively. The Co-PAI films were synthesized from poly(amic acid) (PAA), via solution-casting, followed by thermal imidizations. The thermal- and mechanical-properties and optical transparency of the Co-PAI films with different BPA monomer contents were investigated. We also investigated the effects of the different MPAB isomers on the Co-PAI structures. Compared with the m-substituted MPAB Co-PAI films, the p-substituted MPAB Co-PAI films have superior thermo-mechanical properties at the same monomer content. However, the optical transparencies of the m-MPAB Co-PAIs are slightly better than those of the p-MPAB Co-PAIs. The thermal- and mechanical-properties and optical transparency of the copoly(amide imide) films with different BPA monomer contents were investigated.![]()

Abstract
A series of colorless copolyimide films with high thermal stability and good solubility are synthesized from (trifluoromethyl)biphenyl-4,4’-diamine (TFMB) with different 1,2,4,5-cyclohexanetetracarboxylic dianhydride (HPMDA) to 2,2-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl)-hexafluoropropane (6FDA) dianhydride mole ratios through one-pot solution polycondensation. These copolyimide films exhibit excellent optical transparency (T400 > 90% and λ0 ~305–333 nm) with a thickness of 15 μm and good solubility in most organic solvents. The excellent optical properties are mainly attributed to the low inter- and intra-molecular charge transfer interactions due to the alicyclic structure and the strong electronegative CF3 groups. The glass transition temperature increases from 332 to 352 °C with increasing HPMDA content in the copolymers, while the thermal decomposition temperature is improved with increasing 6FDA content. These results indicate that the copolyimide films can be successfully utilized in the development of novel heat-resistant plastic substrates for the optoelectronic engineering applications.

A novel aromatic diamine containing pyridyl side group, 4-pyridine-4,4-bis(3,5-dimethyl-5-aminophenyl)methane (PyDPM), was successfully synthesized via electrophilic substitution reaction. The polyimides (PIs) containing pyridine were obtained via the microwave-assisted one-step polycondensation of the PyDPM with pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), 3,3',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA), 3,3',4,4'-diphenylether tetracarboxylic dianhydride (ODPA) and 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA). Contrarily to the reported similar PIs, these PIs exhibit much higher thermal stability or heat resistance, i.e. high glass transition temperatures (T gs) in the range of 358-473°C, and the decomposition temperatures at 5% weight loss over 476°C under nitrogen. They can afford flexible and strong films with tensile strength of 82.1-93.3 MPa, elongation at break of 3.7%-15.2%, and Young's modulus of 3.3-3.8 GPa. Furthermore, The PI films exhibit good optical transparency with the cut-off wavelength at 313-366 nm and transmittance higher than 73% at 450 nm. The excellent thermal and optical transmittance can be attributed to synthesis method and the introduction of pyridine rings and ortho-methyl groups. The inherent viscosities of PIs via one-step method were found to be 0.58-1.12 dl g-1 in DMAc, much higher than those via two-step method. These results indicate these PIs could be potential candidates for optical substrates of organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs).
