Fabrication of polymeric nanofibrous mats with controllable structure and enhanced wetting behavior using one-step electrospinning

Antibacterial aroma compounds as property modifiers for electrospun biopolymer nanofibers of proteins and polysaccharides: A review

Electrospinning is one of the most promising techniques for producing biopolymer nanofibers for various applications. Proteins and polysaccharides, among other biopolymers, are attractive substrates for electrospinning due to their favorable biocompatibility and biodegradability. However, there are still challenges to improve the mechanical properties, water sensitivity and biological activity of biopolymer nanofibers. Therefore, these strategies such as polymer blending, application of cross-linking agents, the addition of nanoparticles and bioactive components, and modification of biopolymer have been developed to enhance the properties of biopolymer nanofibers. Among them, antibacterial aroma compounds (AACs) from essential oils are widely used as bioactive components and property modifiers in various biopolymer nanofibers to enhance the functionality, hydrophobicity, thermal properties, and mechanical properties of nanofibers, which depends on the electrospun strategy of AACs. This review summarizes the recently reported antimicrobial activities and applications of AACs, and compares the effects of four electrospinning strategies for encapsulating AACs on the properties and applications of nanofibers. The authors focus on the correlation of the main characteristics of these biopolymer electrospun nanofibers with the encapsulation strategy of AACs in the nanofibers. Moreover, this review also particularly emphasizes the impact of the characteristics of these nanofibers on their application field of antimicrobial materials.

Investigating the Effects of PA66 Electrospun Nanofibers Layered within an Adhesive Composite Joint Fabricated under Autoclave Curing

Enhancing the performance of adhesively joined composite components is crucial for various industrial applications. In this study, polyamide 66 (PA66) nanofibers produced by electrospinning were coated on unidirectional carbon/epoxy prepregs to increase the bond strength of the composites. Carbon/epoxy prepregs with/without PA66 nanofiber coating on the bonding region were fabricated using the autoclave, which is often used in the aerospace industry. The single lap shear Charpy impact energy and Mode-I fracture toughness tests were employed to examine the effects of PA66 nanofibers on the mechanical properties of the joint region. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to investigate the nanofiber morphology and fracture modes. The thermal characteristics of Polyamide 66 nanofibers were explored by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). We observed that the electrospun PA66 nanofiber coating on the prepreg surfaces substantially improves the joint strength. Results revealed that the single lap shear and Charpy impact strength values of the composite joint are increased by about 79 and 24%, respectively, by coating PA66 nanofibers onto the joining region. The results also showed that by coating PA66 nanofibers, the Mode-I fracture toughness value was improved by about 107% while the glass transition temperature remained constant.

Theoretical Investigation of Wenzel and Cassie Wetting States on Porous Films and Fiber Meshes

In this study, the wetting phenomenon on a thin, porous film covering a substrate was investigated on the basis of a classical equilibrium theory. The equilibrium contact angles of the Wenzel, hydrophobic Cassie, and hydrophilic Cassie states and the transition points between them were derived as functions of parameters, such as the porosity and specific surface area of the porous film. These expressions were applied to describe wetting on fiber mats/meshes. The equilibrium contact angles and transition points of the three wetting states on the fiber mesh covering the substrate are expressed as functions of parameters, such as fiber radius, roughness factor, and volume porosity of the fiber mesh. A fiber mesh can attain superhydrophobicity when it is composed of thin hydrophobic fibers with surface roughness and has an appropriate volume porosity.

Thermally Treated Berberine-Loaded SA/PVA/PEO Electrospun Microfiber Membranes for Antibacterial Wound Dressings

This study aimed to develop a safe and advanced antibacterial material of electrospun microfiber membranes (MFMs) for wound dressings. Combinations of several materials were investigated; thermal treatment and electrospinning techniques were used to form the best quality of MFMs to suit its end applications. By comparing the fiber morphology, diameter changes, and fracture strength, the suitable ratio of raw materials and thermal treatment were obtained before and after adding Trition X-100 as a surfactant for MFMs of sodium alginate/polyvinyl alcohol/polyethylene oxide (SA/PVA/PEO). The electrospinning solution was mixed with berberine as an antibacterial substance; meanwhile, calcium chloride (CaCl₂) was used as the crosslinking agent. The antibacterial properties, water dissolution resistance, water content, and fracture strength were thoroughly investigated. The results showed that the antibacterial rates of MFMs with different mass fractions of berberine (0, 3, and 5 wt.%) to Escherichia coli (E. coli) were 14.7, 92.9, and 97.2%, respectively. The moisture content and fracture strength of MFMs containing 5 wt.% berberine were 72.0% and 7.8 MPa, respectively. In addition, the produced MFMs embodied great water dissolution resistance. Berberine-loaded SA/PVA/PEO MFMs could potentially serve as an antibacterial wound dressing substrate with low cost and small side effects.

Development of electrospun mats based on hydrophobic hydroxypropyl cellulose derivatives

In this work, hydroxypropyl cellulose esters (HPCE) with long aliphatic chains were prepared and innovatively used in electrospinning to obtain hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC)-based mats with enhanced resistance to moist environments. The described approach is very simple and does not require any post-treatment (e.g. cross-linking step) to overcome a major problem concerning the premature loss of properties of cellulose-based materials when in contact with moisture. HPCE-based electrospun mats were characterized in terms of their morphology, swelling ability and in vitro hydrolytic degradation. The mats exhibited a swelling capacity of over 115%, depending on the degree of substitution. The in vitro hydrolytic degradation tests showed the high structural integrity of the mats (< 5% weight loss) over a period of 30 days. The in vitro cytotoxicity tests showed that the mats of HPC esters are cytocompatible and promote the adhesion, proliferation and spreading of NIH3T3 fibroblast cells. These data suggest that the HPCE mats may be interesting materials for wound dressings, as well as for other tissue engineering applications.

Photoactive electrospun cellulose acetate/polyethylene oxide/methylene blue and trilayered cellulose acetate/polyethylene oxide/silk fibroin/ciprofloxacin nanofibers for chronic wound healing

This study aimed to synthesize cellulose acetate (CA)-based electrospun nanofibers as drug delivery dressings for chronic wound healing. For the first time, CA was blended with polyethylene oxide (PEO) using acetone and formic acid. Methylene blue (MB) was incorporated into monolayered random CA/PEO nanofibers. They had a diameter of 400-600 nm, were hydrophilic, and generated reactive oxygen species upon irradiation. Thus, they mediated antimicrobial photodynamic inactivation (aPDI) against isolated biofilm-forming Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Bacterial survival, biofilm mass, and produced pyocyanin of the treated groups declined by 90%, 80%, and 3 folds, respectively. On the other hand, ciprofloxacin (Cipro) was loaded into an innovative trilayered aligned nanofiber consisting of CA/PEO surrounding a blank layer of silk fibroin. Cipro and MB release followed the Korsmeyer-Peppas model. An infected diabetic wound mouse model was established and treated with either MB-aPDI or Cipro. A combined therapy group of MB-aPDI followed by Cipro was included. The combined therapy showed significantly better results than monotherapies delineated by elevation in re-epithelization, collagen deposition, CD34, and TGF-β expression, along with a decline in CD95+ cells. This study deduced that drug-loaded CA electrospun nanofibers might be exploited in multimodal chronic wound healing.

Antibacterial Filtration Membranes Based on PVDF-co-HFP Nanofibers with the Addition of Medium-Chain 1-Monoacylglycerols

The efficiency of filtration membranes is substantially lowered by bacterial attachments and potential fouling processes, which reduce their durability and lifecycle. The antibacterial and antifouling properties exhibited by the added materials play a substantial role in their application. We tested a material poly(vinylidene fluoride)-co-hexafluoropropylene (PDVF-co-HFP) based on an electrospun copolymer, where an agent was incorporated with a small amount of ester of glycerol consecutively with caprylic, capric, and lauric acids. Each of these three materials differing in the esters (1-monoacylglycerol, 1-MAG) used was prepared with three weighted concentrations of 1-MAG (1, 2, and 3 wt %). The presence of 1-MAG with an amphiphilic structure resulted in the hydrophilic character of the prepared materials that contributed to the filtration performance. The tested materials (membranes) were characterized with rheological, optical (scanning electron microscopy, SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and other methods to evaluate antibacterial and antifouling activities. The pure water flux was 6 times higher than that of the neat PVDF-co-HFP membrane when the added 1-MAG attained only 1 wt %. It was experimentally shown that the PVDF-co-HFP/1-MAG membrane with high wettability improved antibacterial activity and antifouling ability. This membrane is highly promising for water treatment due to the safety of antibacterial 1-MAG additives.

Electrospun and co-electrospun biopolymer nanofibers for skin wounds on diabetic patients: an overview

Wound healing treatment in diabetic patients worldwide represents around 2.1 trillion dollars to global health sectors. This is because of the complications presented in the wound healing process of skin ulcers, such as a lack of macrophage and fibroblast growth factors (TGF-β1 and PDGF, respectively) that are both needed for extracellular matrix (ECM) synthesis. Therefore, there is a need for research on new and cost-effective materials to enable ECM synthesis. Such materials include co-electrospun nanofibers used as wound dressings, since they have a similar morphology to the ECM, and therefore, possess the advantage of using different materials to accelerate the wound healing process. Co-electrospun nanofibers have a unique structural configuration, formed by a core and a shell. This configuration allows the protection and gradual liberation of healing agent compounds, which could be included in the core. Some of the materials used in nanofibers are polymers, including natural compounds, such as chitosan (which has been proven to possess antimicrobial and therapeutic activity) and gelatin (for its cell growth, adhesion, and organisational capacity in the wound healing process). Synthetics such as polyvinyl-alcohol (PVA) (mainly as a co-spinning agent to chitosan) can also be used. Another bioactive compound that can be used to enhance the wound healing process is eugenol, a terpenoid present in different medicinal plant tissues that have scarring properties. Therefore, the present review analyses the potential use of co-electrospun nanofibers, with chitosan-PVA-eugenol in the core and gelatin in the shell as a wound dressing for diabetic skin ulcers.

Novel Polyvinyl Butyral/Monoacylglycerol Nanofibrous Membrane with Antifouling Activity

Monoacylglycerols (MAGs) have proven of great interest to the foodstuffs industry due to the promising antibacterial activity they show for controlling microbial contamination. Prior to this paper, this antibacterial agent had not been incorporated in a nanofibrous membrane. This study details convenient fabrication of nanofibrous membranes based on polyvinyl butyral (PVB) containing various concentrations of monocaprin (MAG 10) by an electrospinning process. Increasing the concentration of MAG 10 caused differences to appear in the shape of the nanofibers, in addition to which the level of wettability was heightened. Besides exhibiting antibacterial properties, the functional membranes demonstrated especially good antifouling activity. The novel and efficient nanofibrous membranes described have the potential to find eventual application in medical or environmental fields.

Formation of PA12 fibres via melt electrospinning process: parameter analysis and optimisation

Melt electrospinning is a fast-emerging technique for fibre formation. While the process is similar to solution electrospinning, the absence of solvents broadens the applications, avoiding the potential toxicity of solvent residues and enables the usage of non-dissolvable polymers. In this article, the influence of selected melt electrospinning process parameters (tip-to-collector distance, voltage, and melt temperature) on fibre diameter and diameter distribution was investigated. The screening experiments indicated that the lowest fibre diameter median was 2.19 μm. Based on the dependencies between each process parameter and median fibre diameter, the authors used response-surface plots to determine the optimal conditions to produce fibres with the desired fibre diameters. The lowest fibre diameters were obtained with the following process parameter input values: temperature, 348°C; voltage, 19 kV; and tip-to-collector distance, 3 cm. The obtained fibres indicated that the average value of fibre diameter medians decreased in comparison to the screening experiment and the median fibre diameter for the sample “Optim.” was 1.27 μm.
