Abstract
Fully room temperature three-dimensional (3D) shape-reprogrammable, recyclable, and photomobile azobenzene (azo) polymer actuators hold much promise in many photoactuating applications, but their development is challenging. Herein, we report on the efficient synthesis of a series of main-chain azo liquid crystalline polymers (LCPs) with such performances via Michael addition polymerization. They have both ester groups and two kinds of hydrogen bond-forming groups (i.e., amide and secondary amino groups) and different flexible spacer length in the backbones. Such poly(ester-amide-secondary amine)s (PEAsAs) show low glass transition temperatures (Tg ≤ 18.4 °C), highly ordered smectic liquid crystalline phases, and reversible photoresponsivity. Their uniaxially oriented fibers fabricated via the melt spinning method exhibit good mechanical strength and photoinduced reversible bending/unbending and large stress at room temperature, which are largely influenced by the flexible spacer length of the polymers. Importantly, all these fibers can be easily reprogrammed under strain at 25 °C into stable fiber springs capable of showing a totally different photomobile mode (i.e., unwinding/winding), mainly owing to the presence of low Tg and both dynamic hydrogen bonding and stable crystalline domains (induced by the uniaxial drawing during the fiber formation). They can also be recycled from a solution at 25 °C. This work not only presents the first azo LCPs with 3D shape reprogrammability, recyclability, and photomobility at room temperature, but also provides some important knowledge of their structure-property relationship, which is useful for designing more advanced photodeformable azo polymers.

Abstract
All-atom molecular dynamics simulations are conducted to elucidate the fracture mechanism of polylactic acid nanofibres doped with metallic nanoparticles. Extensional deformation is applied on polymer nanofibres decorated with spherical silver nanoparticles on the surface layer. In the obtained stress-strain curve, the elastic, yield, strain softening and fracture regions are recognized, where mechanical parameters are evaluated by tracking the stress, strain energy and geometrical evolutions. The energy release rate during crack propagation, which is a crucial factor in fracture mechanics, is calculated. The results show that the presence of doping nanoparticles improves the fracture properties of the polymer nanofibre consistently with experimental observation. The nanoparticles bind together polymer chains on the surface layer, which hinders crack initiation and propagation. The effect of the distribution of nanoparticles is studied through different doping decorations. Additionally, a discussion on the variation of internal energy components during uniaxial tensile loading is provided to unravel the deformation mechanism of nanoparticle-doped nanofibres.

Abstract
Fibrous shape memory polymers (SMPs) have received growing interest in various applications, especially in biomedical applications, which offer new structures at the microscopic level and the potential of enhanced shape deformation of SMPs. In this paper, we report on the development and investigation of the properties of acrylate-based shape memory polymer fibers, fabricated by electrospinning technology with the addition of polystyrene (PS). Fibers with different diameters are manufactured using four different PS solution concentrations (25, 30, 35, and 40 wt%) and three flow rates (1.0, 2.5, and 5.0 μL min-1) with a 25 kV applied voltage and 17 cm electrospinning distance. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images reveal that the average fiber diameter varies with polymer concentration and flow rates, ranging from 0.655 ± 0.376 to 4.975 ± 1.634 μm. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and stress-strain testing present that the glass transition temperature and tensile values are affected by fiber diameter distribution. The cyclic bending test directly proves that the electrospun SMP fiber webs are able to fully recover; additionally, the recovery speed is also affected by fiber diameter. With the combination of the SMP material and electrospinning technology, this work paves the way in designing and optimizing future SMP fibers properties by adjusting the fiber diameter.

Abstract
*These authors contributed equally.Electrospun fibers often exhibit enhanced properties at reduced diameters, a characteristic now widely attributed to a high molecular orientation of the polymer chains along the fiber axis. A parameter that can affect the molecular organization is the type of collector onto which fibers are electrospun. In this work, we use polarized confocal Raman spectromicroscopy to determine the incidence of the three most common types of collectors on the molecular orientation and structure in individual fibers of a broad range of diameters. Poly(ethylene terephthalate) is used as a model system for fibers of weakly crystalline polymers. A clear correlation emerges between the choice of collector, the induced molecular orientation, the fraction of trans conformers, and the degree of crystallinity within fibers. Quantitative structural information gathered by Raman contributes to a general description of the mechanism of action of the collectors based on the additional strain they exert on the forming fibers.

Abstract
The interface plays a crucial role in the physical and functional properties of polymer nanocomposites, yet its effects have not been fully recognized in the setting of classical continuum-based modeling. In the present study, we investigate the roles of interface and interfiber interactions on the toughening effects of rubber nanofibers embodied in thermoplastic-based materials. Emphasis is placed on establishing comprehensive theoretical and atomistic descriptions of the nanocomposite systems subjected to pull-out and uniaxial extension in the longitudinal and transverse directions. Using the framework of molecular dynamics, the annealed melt-drawn nanofibers were spontaneously formed via the proposed four-step methodology. The generated nanofibers were then crosslinked using the proposed robust topology-matching algorithm, through which the chemical reactions arising in the crosslinking were closely assimilated. The interfiber interactions were also examined with respect to separation distances and nanofiber radius via a nanofiber-pair atomistic scheme, and the obtained results were subsequently incorporated into the pull-out and uniaxial test simulations. The results indicate that the compatibilizer grafting results in enhanced interfacial shear strength by introducing extra chemical interactions at the interface. In particular, it was found that the compatibilizer restricts the formation and coalescence of nanovoids, resulting in enhanced toughening effects. Together, we have shown that the presence of a small amount of well-dispersed rubber nanofibrillar network whose surfaces are grafted with maleic anhydride compatibilizer can dramatically increase the toughness and alter the failure mechanisms of the nanocomposites without any deterioration in the stiffness, which is also consistent with the recent experimental observations in our lab. The interfacial failure mechanism was also investigated by monitoring the changes in the atomic concentration profiles, mean square displacement and fractional free volume. The results obtained may serve as a promising alternative for the continuum-based modeling and analysis of interfaces.

Abstract
Experiments show that high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a promising stimulus with multiple superior and unique capabilities to induce localized heating and achieve temporal and spatial thermal effects in the polymers, noninvasively. When polymers are subjected to HIFU, they heat up differently compared to the case they are subjected to heat sources directly; however, the origins of this difference are still entirely unknown. We hypothesize that the difference in the macroscale response of polymers subjected to HIFU strongly depends on the polymer chains, composition, and structure, i.e. being crystalline or amorphous. In this work, this hypothesis is investigated by molecular dynamics studies at the atomistic level and verified by experiments at the macroscopic scale. The results show that the viscoelasticity, measured by stress-strain phase lag, the reptation motion of the chains, and the vibration-induced local mobility quantified by the root mean square fluctuation contribute to the observed difference in the HIFU-induced thermal effects. This unravels the unknown mechanisms behind stimulating the polymers by HIFU, and paves the way in front of using this method in future applications.

Abstract
This review paper examines the current state-of-the-art in fabrication of aligned fibers via electrospinning techniques and the effects of these techniques on the mechanical and dielectric properties of electrospun fibers. Molecular orientation, system configuration to align fibers, and post-drawing treatment, like hot/cold drawing process, contribute to better specific strength and specific stiffness properties of nanofibers. The authors suggest that these improved, aligned nanofibers, when applied in composites, have better mechanical and dielectric properties for many structural and multifunctional applications, including advanced aerospace applications and energy storage devices. For these applications, most fiber alignment electrospinning research has focused on either mechanical property improvement or dielectric property improvement alone, but not both simultaneously. Relative to many other nanofiber formation techniques, the electrospinning technique exhibits superior nanofiber formation when considering cost and manufacturing complexity for many situations. Even though the dielectric property of pure nanofiber mat may not be of general interest, the analysis of the combined effect of mechanical and dielectric properties is relevant to the present analysis of improved and aligned nanofibers. A plethora of nanofibers, in particular, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) electrospun nanofibers, are discussed for their mechanical and dielectric properties. In addition, other types of electrospun nanofibers are explored for their mechanical and dielectric properties. An exploratory study by the author demonstrates the relationship between mechanical and dielectric properties for specimens obtained from a rotating mandrel horizontal setup.
