Fabrication, characterization, and oxidation resistance of gelatin/egg white protein cryogel-templated oleogels through apple polyphenol crosslinking. Int J Biol Macromol 2024; 277:134077. Abstract
Cryogel-templated oleogels (CTO) were fabricated via a facile polyphenol crosslinking strategy, where apple polyphenol was utilized to crosslink the gelatin/egg white protein conjugates without forming hydrogels. After freeze-drying, cryogel templates were obtained and used to construct CTO by oil absorption. Apple polyphenol crosslinking improved the emulsion-related properties with appearance changes on samples, and infrared spectroscopy further confirmed the interactions between proteins and apple polyphenol. The crosslinked cryogels presented porous microstructures (porosity of over 96 %), enhanced thermal/mechanical stabilities, and could absorb a high content of oil (14.41 g/g) with a considerable oil holding capacity (90.98 %). Apple polyphenol crosslinking also influenced the rheological performances of CTO, where the highly crosslinked samples owned the best thixotropic recovery of 85.88 %. Moreover, after the rapid oxidation of oleogels, the generation of oxidation products was effectively inhibited by crosslinking (POV: 0.48 nmol/g, and TBARS: 0.53 mg/L). The polyphenol crosslinking strategy successfully involved egg white protein and gelatin to fabricate CTO with desired physical/chemical properties. Apple polyphenol acted as both a crosslinker and an antioxidant, which provided a good reference for fabricating pure protein-based CTO.

Abstract
Oil spill causes extreme environmental damage, from aquatic life to seabirds, disrupting the entire ecosystem. Herein, we have synthesized high scale, economical and bio-compatible, green algae mediated Titanium oxide (TiO2) nanoparticles and Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber mats. We have studied the effect of encapsulation and coating of TiO2 nanoparticles over nanofiber mats for highly efficient oil spill adsorption. TiO2 encapsulated and coated PAN (TECP) nanofibers showed a maximum of 62.34 g g-1 adsorption capacity of petroleum oil from the water surface. Moreover, the composite mats show maximum adsorption within 45 s for up to 5 repeated cycles. Further, it has been observed that the adsorption capacity has increased by increasing the weight of the composite nanofiber mats, which confirms its commercial applicability. Thus, this work provides rapid, large-scale, economical, bio-compatible, and highly effective adsorbents for oil spill cleaning and extraction over natural waterbodies.

Abstract
Electrospun zein membranes are suitable for various biomedical applications. A UV-crosslinked electrospun membrane of a zein/PEO blend for wound healing application was explored in this work. The improvement in mechanical properties of the membrane after UV crosslinking was attributed to the change in protein conformation from an α-helix to a β-sheet. The circular dichroism (CD) spectra and FTIR spectra confirmed this conformational change. XRD analysis was shown to prove the amorphous nature of polymer blends with specific broad peaks at 2θ = 9° and 20°. The water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of the membrane was found to be in the range of 1500-2000 g m-2 day-1, which was well suited with that of commercially available wound dressing material. Enough number of available functional groups like thiol, amino, and hydroxyl groups supplement a blood clotting index (BCI) to the matrix, causing 99% BCI within 4 min. A 91% cell viability result in the MTT assay with human dermal fibroblast cells confirmed the noncytotoxicity of the membrane. Tripeptides produced after the thermolysin-based hydrolysis of zein caused inhibition of TGF β1 expression and thus increased fibroblast and collagen production. The membrane stimulated 54% more collagen production compared to control cells at day 2 and caused 84% wound closure in human dermal fibroblast cells, which were desirable index markers of a potential wound care material.

Abstract
Developing multi-functional media for effectively removing different contaminants coexisted in wastewater system is highly desired. Herein, zein, a natural protein possessing abundant functional groups in molecule, is chosen to be fabricated into micro/nanofibrous membranes as adsorbents and separation media. Zein fibers with novel groove ribbon structures, which possess better structural characteristics, are designed for obtaining good adsorption performance. The adsorption performances of zein fiber membranes are evaluated. The results show that zein fiber membranes have the adsorption capacities up to 94 g/g for motor oil, 168 mg/g for Congo red, and 189 mg/g for Pb2+ ion for 1000 mg/L initial solution concentration, showing considerable competitiveness as compared with the reported adsorbents. The zein membrane with groove ribbon fiber morphology exhibits optimal adsorption capability and can be attractive multi-functional separation media.
