Abstract
Barium phosphate (Ba3(PO4)2) is a class of material that has attracted significant attention thanks to its chemical stability and versatility. However, the use of Ba3(PO4)2 as a photocatalyst is scarcely reported, and its use as a photocatalyst has yet to be reported. Herein, Ba3(PO4)2 nanoflakes synthesis is optimized using sol-gel and hydrothermal methods. The as-prepared Ba3(PO4)2 powders are investigated using physicochemical characterizations, including XRD, SEM, EDX, FTIR, DRS, J-t, LSV, Mott-Schottky, and EIS. In addition, DFT calculations are performed to investigate the band structure. The oxidation capability of the photocatalysts is investigated depending on the synthesis method using rhodamine B (RhB) as a pollutant model. Both Ba3(PO4)2 samples prepared by the sol-gel and hydrothermal methods display high RhB photodegradation of 79% and 68%, respectively. The Ba3(PO4)2 obtained using the sol-gel process exhibits much higher stability under light excitation after four regeneration cycles. The photocatalytic oxidation mechanism is proposed based on the active species trapping experiments where O2 •‒ is the most reactive species. The finding shows the promising potential of Ba3(PO4)2 photocatalysts and opens the door for further investigation and application in various photocatalytic applications.

Abstract
Despite the photocatalytic organic pollutant degradation using ZnO started in 1910-1911, many challenges are still ahead, and several critical issues have to be addressed. Large band gap, and short life-time of photogenerated electrons and holes are critical issues negatively affect the photocatalytic activity of ZnO. Various approaches have been introduced to overcome these issues including intrinsic doping, extrinsic doping, and heterostructure. This review introduces unique and deep insights into tuning of the photocatalytic activity of ZnO. It starts by description of how to tune the photocatalytic activity of pristine ZnO through tuning its morphology, surface area, exposed face, and intrinsic defects. Afterward, the review explains how the Z-scheme approach succeed to address the redox weakened issue of heterojunction approach. In general, this review provides a clear image that helps the researcher to tune the photocatalytic activity of pristine ZnO and its heterostructure.

Abstract
Zinc oxide thin films have been developed through thermal oxidation of Zinc thin films grown by high impulse power magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS). The influence of various sputtering power on thin film structural, morphological, photocatalytic, and antimicrobial properties was investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed that the crystalline phase of ZnO thin films consists of a hexagonal wurtzite structure. Increasing the sputtering power will lead to intrinsic stress on thin films that promote whisker formation. In this study, whiskers were successfully developed on the thin films without precursors/catalysts and not thermally treated over the Zn melting point. This finding showed that the film phase structure and morphology are significantly affected by sputtering power. It was found that ZnO thin films exhibit high photocatalytic performance under UV irradiation (89.91%) of methylene blue after 300 min of irradiation. The antimicrobial activity on ZnO thin films showed significant inhibition activity (p < 0.05) against E. coli, S. aureus, and C. albicans. However, the whisker formation on ZnO thin films is not accessible to enhance photocatalytic and antimicrobial activity. This study demonstrates that the HiPIMS method through the thermal oxidation process can promote a good performance of ZnO thin films as photocatalyst and antimicrobial agents.

Abstract
ZnO nanoparticles (NPS) with different morphologies were synthesized, and the antibacterial and anticancer activity was studied, herein. The physicochemical characterization was carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and UV-visible. To study the antibacterial and anticancer capability of ZnO NPS, Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) bacteria and HeLa cancer cells were exposed at different doses of ZnO NPS (7-250 µg/mL). TEM analysis confirmed the obtention of spherical, hexagonal and rod ZnO NPS with an average diameter of 20 ± 4 nm, 1.17 ± 0.3 µm and 1.11 ± 1.2 µm, respectively. XRD diffractograms showed the characteristic pattern of crystalline ZnO in wurtzite phase. FTIR and UV-vis spectra showed slight differences of the main absorption peaks, revealing that different ZnO NPS morphologies may cause shifts in spectra. Biological essays showed that the number of E. coli and S. aureus bacteria as well as HeLa cells decreases linearly by increasing the nanoparticle concentration. However, the best anticancer and antibacterial activity was shown by spherical ZnO NPS at 100 µg/mL. The better capability of spherical ZnO NPS than hexagonal and rod ZnO NPS is related with its small particle size. The present results suggest that the spherical ZnO NPS has a great potential as an antibacterial and anticancer agent.

Abstract
In this study, the physical properties of ZnO were facile controlled by the synthesis method with the addition of capping and precipitation agents. As-prepared ZnO samples had different morphologies such as carnation flower-like ZnO (CF-ZnO), rose-flower-like ZnO (RF-ZnO), rod-like ZnO (R-ZnO), and nanoparticle ZnO (N-ZnO) and were characterized by SEM, XRD, N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, FT-IR, and DR/UV-vis. All samples had a crystallite structure of hexagonal wurtzite type. The CF-ZnO and RF-ZnO samples had the hierarchical structure like a carnation flower and a beautiful rose, respectively. R-ZnO was composed of many hexagonal rods and few spherical particles, while N-ZnO microstructures were made up of nanoparticles with approximately 20-30 nm, exhibiting the largest surface area, pore volume, and pore width among as-prepared samples, and their crystal size and bandgap energy were 17.8 nm and 3.207 eV, respectively. The catalytic performances of ZnO samples were evaluated by degradation of Tartrazine (TA) and Caffeine (CAF) under low UV irradiation (15 W). N-ZnO showed a high photocatalytic activity compared to other samples. Besides, the reaction kinetics was investigated by the first-order kinetic model, and the catalytic performance of ZnO was evaluated through several organic pollutants.

Abstract
Biomedical waste management is getting significant consideration among treatment technologies, since insufficient management can cause danger to medicinal service specialists, patients, and their environmental conditions. The improvement of waste administration protocols, plans, and policies are surveyed, despite setting up training programs on legitimate waste administration for all healthcare service staff. Most biomedical waste substances do not degrade in the environment, and may also not be thoroughly removed through treatment processes. Therefore, the long-lasting persistence of biomedical waste can effectively have adverse impact on wildlife and human beings, as well. Hence, photocatalysis is gaining increasing attention for eradication of pollutants and for improving the safety and clearness of the environment due to its great potential as a green and eco-friendly process. In this regard, nanostructured photocatalysts, in contrast to their regular counterparts, exhibit significant attributes such as non-toxicity, low cost and higher absorption efficiency in a wider range of the solar spectrum, making them the best candidate to employ for photodegradation. Due to these unique properties of nanophotocatalysts for biomedical waste management, we aim to critically evaluate various aspects of these materials in the present review and highlight their importance in healthcare service settings.

Abstract
ZnO nanostructures (NS)/guar gum (GG) nanocomposites have been successfully synthesized and tested as sorbents for photodegradation, adsorption and antimicrobial activity for dye removal. The addition of ZnO improves the thermal stability of GG based on the ratio of the oxygen in the OH form and the total oxygen in the samples as indicated via XPS and FTIR analyses. Among all tested composites, the ZnO NPs/GG nanocomposite showed the highest photocatalytic activity and hence used in extended adsorption and degradation studies against the anionic dye reactive red (RR195) and the cationic dye Rhodamine B (RhB). The adsorption mechanism and kinetics were studied in details. The ZnO NPs/GG nanocomposite showed quite high removal efficiency for both dyes reaching about 96 degradation percent of the initial dye concentration as well as a high adsorption capacity reaching 70 mg g-1. The adsorption of both dyes on ZnO NPs/GG was found to obey the Freundlich adsorption model with pseudo-second-order kinetics. The antibacterial assay showed an enhanced antibacterial effect of ZnO/GG against E-Coli/TOP10 (PTA 10989) strain compared to pristine ZnO or pure guar gum. The obtained results were proved to be of high significance based on the statistical analysis using one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's analysis.

Abstract
In this study, photocatalytic experiments of 20 mg l-1 sulfamethazine (SMN) in aqueous solution containing ZnO with different morphologies, tetra-needle-like ZnO (T-ZnO), flower-like ZnO (F-ZnO) and nanoparticles ZnO (P-ZnO), were performed. The results indicated that photocatalytic degradation of SMN was effective and followed the pseudo-first-order reaction, but the degree of SMN mineralization showed obvious differences using ZnO with different shapes. After 12 h irradiation, 86%, 71% and 50% of the initial total organic carbon was eliminated in SMN suspension containing T-ZnO, F-ZnO and P-ZnO, respectively. The release ratio of sulfur was close to 100% in the presence of T-ZnO, but reached to 86% and 67% in the presence of F-ZnO and P-ZnO, respectively. The release ratio of nitrogen was about 76%, 63% and 40% using T-ZnO, F-ZnO and P-ZnO as photocatalyst, respectively. The morphology of ZnO played an important role in determining its catalytic activity. Seven intermediates were observed and identified in the UV/T-ZnO reaction system by LC-MS/MS analysis, and a possible degradation pathway was proposed.

Abstract
ZnO-SnO2 hollow spheres were successfully synthesized through a hydrothermal method-combined carbon sphere template. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The average diameter of hollow spheres is about 150 nm. The photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared samples was investigated by photodegrading Rhodamine B. The results indicated that the photocatalytic activities of ZnO-SnO2 hollow spheres are higher than ZnO hollow spheres. The degradation efficiency of the hollow spheres could reach 99.85% within 40 min, while the ZnO hollow spheres need 50 min.

Abstract
The benzene pollutant in gaseous phase was successfully degraded by using ZnO + Zn2TiO4 multicomponent oxide thin films as photocatalysts. The films were obtained with different Ti/Zn ratios (0, 0.20, 0.40, 0.45, 0.50, 0.67, 0.84, and 1) by the sol-gel route. The initial level of benzene concentration was 110 ± 10 ppm. The process was carried out under different conditions of relative humidity (RH): 25, 50, and 80 % in a batch-type reactor, at room temperature. The results show benzene degradation near to 95 % at t = 240 min, where the multicomponent oxide semiconductor has a Ti/Zn ratio of 0.67. Meanwhile, with the TiO2 thin films, only a degradation of 70 % was reached at the same measurement conditions. This synergistic effect on the photocatalytic activity is a result of the coupling of both semiconductor oxides. An adverse effect on the photocatalytic activity was observed as the relative humidity increases.

Abstract
Today, a major issue about water pollution is the residual dyes from different sources (e.g., textile industries, paper and pulp industries, dye and dye intermediates industries, pharmaceutical industries, tannery and craft bleaching industries, etc.), and a wide variety of persistent organic pollutants have been introduced into our natural water resources or wastewater treatment systems. In fact, it is highly toxic and hazardous to the living organism; thus, the removal of these organic contaminants prior to discharge into the environment is essential. Varieties of techniques have been employed to degrade those organic contaminants and advanced heterogeneous photocatalysis involving zinc oxide (ZnO) photocatalyst appears to be one of the most promising technology. In recent years, ZnO photocatalyst have attracted much attention due to their extraordinary characteristics. The high efficiency of ZnO photocatalyst in heterogeneous photocatalysis reaction requires a suitable architecture that minimizes electron loss during excitation state and maximizes photon absorption. In order to further improve the immigration of photo-induced charge carriers during excitation state, considerable effort has to be exerted to further improve the heterogeneous photocatalysis under UV/visible/solar illumination. Lately, interesting and unique features of metal doping or binary oxide photocatalyst system have gained much attention and became favourite research matter among various groups of scientists. It was noted that the properties of this metal doping or binary oxide photocatalyst system primarily depend on the nature of the preparation method and the role of optimum dopants content incorporated into the ZnO photocatalyst. Therefore, this paper presents a critical review of recent achievements in the modification of ZnO photocatalyst for organic contaminants degradation.

Abstract
In this study, the photo-decolorization of a mixture of methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) was investigated using Ag-ZnO multipods. The photo-catalyst used, ZnO multipods, was successfully synthesized. The surface of ZnO microstructure was modified by deposition of different amounts of Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) using the photo-reduction method. The as-prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-Vis and atomic absorption spectroscopy. The photo-catalytic efficiency of Ag-ZnO is mainly controlled by the amount of Ag NPs deposited on the ZnO surface. The results obtained suggest that Ag-ZnO containing 6.5% Ag NPs, has the highest photo-catalytic performance in the simultaneous photo-degradation of dyes at a shorter time.

Abstract
ZnO nanopyramids (NPys) with exposed crystal facets of {101̅1} were synthesized via a one-step solvothermal method, having a uniform size with a hexagonal edge length of ∼100 nm and a height of ∼200 nm. Technologies of XRD, TEM, HRTEM, Raman, PL, and XPS were used to characterize the morphological and structural properties of the products, while the corresponding gas sensing properties were determined by using ethanol as the target gas. For the overall goal of defect engineering, the effect of aging temperature on the gas sensing performance of the ZnO NPys was studied. The test results showed that, at the aging temperature of 300 °C, the gas sensing property has been improved to the best, with the fast response-recovery time and the excellent selectivity, because the ZnO300 has the most electron donors for absorbing the largest content of O(2-). Model of defect redistribution was used to explicate the changing of the surface defects at different aging temperatures. The findings showed that, in addition to VO, Zni was the dominant defect of the {101̅1} crystal facet. The gas sensing performance of the ZnO NPys was determined by the contents of VO and Zni, with all of the defects redistributed on the surface. All of the results will be noticeable for the improvement of the sensing performance of materials with special crystal facet exposing.

Abstract
The visible-light-driven semiconductor photocatalysts are the current research focus techniques used to decompose organic pollutants/compounds. The photodegradation efficiency of organic compounds by photocatalyst is expected to be better compared to UV-light-driven semiconductor photocatalysts technique since the major components of our solar energy are visible light (~44%). However, as most of the previous research work has been carried out using semiconductor photocatalysts in the form of powder, extra steps and costs are needed to remove this powder from the slurry to prevent secondary pollution. In this research work, we will explain our fabrication technique of V2O5 nanoflakes by growing radially on PET fibers. By utilizing the flexibility and high surface area of polymeric fibers as novel substrate for the growth of V2O5 nanoflakes, the Rhodamine B (RhB) could be degraded under visible light irradiation. The photodegradation of RhB solution by V2O5 nanoflakes followed the 1st order kinetic with a constant rate of 0.0065 min−1. The success of this research work indicates that V2O5 nanoflakes grown on PET fibre could be possibly used as organic waste water purifier under continuous flow condition. A photodegradation mechanism of V2O5 nanostructures to degrade RhB dye is proposed based on the energy diagram.
