Facile synthesis of pure vaterite using steamed ammonia liquid waste and ammonium carbonate without additives via simple mechanical mixing

Interaction of Ca2+ and Fe3+ in co-precipitation process induced by Virgibacillus dokdonensis and its application

Biomineralization has garnered significant attention in the field of wastewater treatment due to its notable cost reduction compared to conventional methods. The reinjection water from oilfields containing an exceedingly high concentration of calcium and ferric ions will pose a major hazard in production. However, the utilization of biomineralization for precipitating these ions has been scarcely investigated due to limited tolerance among halophiles towards such extreme conditions. In this study, free and immobilized halophiles Virgibacillus dokdonensis were used to precipitate these ions and the effects were compared, at the same time, biomineralization mechanisms and mineral characteristics were further explored. The results show that bacterial concentration and carbonic anhydrase activity were higher when additionally adding ferric ion based on calcium ion; the content of protein, polysaccharides, deoxyribonucleic acid and humic substances in the extracellular polymers also increased compared to control. Calcium ions were biomineralized into calcite and vaterite with multiple morphology. Due to iron doping, the crystallinity and thermal stability of calcium carbonate decreased, the content of OC = O, NC = O and CO-PO3 increased, the stable carbon isotope values became much more negative, and β-sheet in minerals disappeared. Higher calcium concentrations facilitated ferric ion precipitation, while ferric ions hindered calcium precipitation. The immobilized bacteria performed better in ferric ion removal, with a precipitation ratio exceeding 90%. Free bacteria performed better in calcium removal, and the precipitation ratio reached a maximum of 56%. This research maybe provides some reference for the co-removal of calcium and ferric ions from the oilfield wastewater.

Assessment of Ammoniacal Leaching Agents for Metal Cation Extraction from Construction Wastes in Mineral Carbonation

The use of carbon mineralization to produce carbonates from alkaline industrial wastes is gaining traction as a method to decarbonize the built environment. One of the environmental concerns during this process is the use of acids, which are required to extract Ca2+ or Mg2+ from the alkaline waste to produce carbonates. Conventionally, acids such as hydrochloric, nitric, or sulfuric are used which allow for the highest material recovery but are corrosive and difficult to regenerate as they are utilized in a linear fashion and generate additional process waste. An alternative is to use regenerable protonatable salts of ammonia, such as ammonium chloride (AC) or ammonium sulfate, the former of which is used globally during the Solvay process as a reversible proton shuttle. In this study, we show that regenerable ammonium salts, such as AC (NH4Cl) and ammonium bisulfate (NH4HSO4), can be effectively used for material recovery and the production of calcium carbonate during the leaching of waste cement paste as an alternative to conventional acids such as HCl. Leaching kinetics, postreaction residue, and carbonate characterization were performed to assess the productivity of this system and potential uses of these materials downstream. The stabilization of vaterite was observed in the case of AC leaching, suggesting its importance in the kinetic stability of vaterite and suppression of calcite nucleation. Overall, this study motivates the use of alternative leaching agents, such as salts of ammonia, to facilitate material recovery and carbon capture from alkaline industrial wastes.

Green and effective remediation of heavy metals contaminated water using CaCO3 vaterite synthesized through biomineralization

Heavy metal pollution has attracted significant attention due to its persistent presence in aquatic environments. A novel vaterite-based calcium carbonate adsorbent, named biogenic CaCO3, was synthesized utilizing a microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) method to remediate heavy metal-contaminated water. The maximum Cd2+ removal capacity of biogenic CaCO3 was 1074.04 mg Cd2+/g CaCO3 with a high Cd2+ removal efficiency greater than 90% (initial Cd2+ concentration 400 mg/L). Furthermore, the biogenic CaCO₃ vaterite, induced by microbial-induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) process, demonstrated a prolonged phase transformation to calcite and enhanced stability. This resulted in a sustained high effectiveness (greater than 96%) following six consecutive recycling tests. Additionally, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses revealed that the semi-stable vaterite type of biogenic CaCO3 spontaneously underwent dissolution and recrystallization to form thermodynamic stable calcite in aquatic environments. However, the presence of Cd2+ leads to the transformation of vaterite into CdCO3 rather than undergoing direct converting to calcite. This transformation is attributed to the relatively low solubility of CdCO3 compared to calcite. Meanwhile, the biogenic CaCO3 proved to be an efficient and viable method for the removal of Pb2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Co2+, Ni2+ and Mn2+ from water samples, surpassing the performance of previously reported adsorbents. Overall, the efficient and promising adsorbent demonstrates potential for practical in situ remediation of heavy metals-contaminated water.

Calcium ion removal at different sodium chloride concentrations by free and immobilized halophilic bacteria

Much attention has been paid to Ca²⁺ ion removal by biomineralization due to the dangers of Ca²⁺ on industrial processes and human health. However, Ca²⁺ removal from hypersaline water by biomineralization is quite difficult due to there being few halophilic bacteria tolerating higher salinities. In this study, free and immobilized Virgibacillus massiliensis C halophilic bacteria exhibiting carbonic anhydrase activity were used to remove Ca²⁺ ions from water at different NaCl concentrations. With increasing NaCl concentrations (10, 50, 100, 150 and 200 g/L), Ca²⁺ ion concentrations in the presence of free bacteria and in two groups of immobilized bacteria for a period of 6 days sharply decreased from 1200 mg/L to 219-562 mg/L, 71-214 mg/L and 21-159 mg/L, respectively; Ca²⁺ precipitation ratios were 55%-81%, 82%-94% and 87%-98%, respectively. The humic acid-like substances, protein, DNA and polysaccharide, released by the bacteria, promoted the Ca²⁺ ion removal. The immobilized bacteria were able to be recycled and precultured, which would save industry costs and increase Ca²⁺ ion removal efficiency. Biological processes for Ca²⁺ ion removal include cell surface, intracellular and extracellular biomineralization. The biogenesis of calcium carbonate was proved by SEM-EDS, FTIR, XPS and stable carbon isotope values. This study provides insights into the effective removal of Ca²⁺ ions by biomineralization in hypersaline water.

Difference in calcium ion precipitation between free and immobilized Halovibrio mesolongii HMY2

Biomineralization has become a research focus in wastewater treatment due to its much lower costs compared to traditional methods. However, the low sodium chloride (NaCl)-tolerance of bacteria limits applications to only water with low NaCl concentrations. Here, calcium ions in hypersaline wastewater (10% NaCl) were precipitated by free and immobilized Halovibrio mesolongii HMY2 bacteria and the differences between them were determined. The results show that calcium ions can be transformed into several types of calcium carbonate with a range of morphologies, abundant organic functional groups (C-H, C-O-C, C=O, etc), protein secondary structures (β-sheet, α-helix, 3₁₀ helix, and β-turn), P=O and S-H indicated by P2p and S2p, and more negative δ¹³C_PDB (‰) values (-16.8‰ to -18.4‰). The optimal conditions for the immobilized bacteria were determined by doing experiments with six factors and five levels and using response surface method. Under the action of two groups of immobilized bacteria prepared under the optimal conditions, by the 10^th day, Ca²⁺ ion precipitation ratios had increased to 79%-89% and 80%-88% with changes in magnesium ion cencentrations. Magnesium ions can significantly inhibit the calcium ion precipitation, and this inhibitory effect can be decreased under the action of immobilized bacteria. Minerals induced by immobilized bacteria always aggregated together, had higher contents of Mg, P, and S, lower stable carbon isotope values and less well-developed protein secondary structures. This study demonstrates an economic and eco-friendly method for recycling calcium ions in hypersaline wastewater, providing an easy step in the process of desalination.

Monodisperse and Nanometric-Sized Calcium Carbonate Particles Synthesis Optimization

Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) particles represent an appealing choice as a drug delivery system due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, simplicity and cost-effectiveness of manufacturing, and stimulus-responsiveness. Despite this, the synthesis of CaCO3 particles with controlled size in the nanometer range via a scalable manufacturing method remains a major challenge. Here, by using a co-precipitation technique, we investigated the impact on the particle size of different synthesis parameters, such as the salt concentration, reaction time, stirring speed, and temperature. Among them, the salt concentration and temperature resulted in having a remarkable effect on the particle size, enabling the preparation of well-dispersed spherical nanoparticles with a size below 200 nm. Upon identification of optimized synthesis conditions, the encapsulation of the antitumoral agent resveratrol into CaCO3 nanoparticles, without significantly impacting the overall size and morphology, has been successfully achieved.

Sonochemical Synthesis of Vaterite-Type Calcium Carbonate Using Steamed Ammonia Liquid Waste without Additives

Herein, metastable spheroidal vaterite calcium carbonate (CaCO3) was prepared using a simple ultrasound technique. The fabricated material comprises an irregular nanoparticle aggregate when steamed ammonia liquid waste, that is, (CaCl2) and (NH4)2CO3, is used as the raw material at atmospheric temperature, without any surfactants. The effects of ultrasound amplitude, probe immersion depth, and solution volume on particle properties were investigated. The obtained samples were identified and characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller technique. Our experiments show that the probe immersion depth and the reaction volume are the key parameters that impact the diameter size and size distribution of the fabricated spheroidal vaterite CaCO3 particles. The ultrasound amplitude considerably affected the particle size and the specific surface area. A possible formation mechanism for pure vaterite is proposed herein, which suggests that simple vaterite CaCO3 is formed owing to the special properties of steamed ammonia liquid waste and the synergistic effects of the ultrasonic system. This study may provide a new method for vaterite CaCO3 synthesis.
