Abstract
According to our recent necropsy-based study, mastitis is the most common underlying diagnosis of on-farm deaths in Finnish dairy cows. However, it remained unanswered to what extent mastitis has contributed to death of all necropsied cows. In the present study, based on histopathology, we detected one-third of the necropsied dairy cows having active inflammatory udder lesions (n = 110). The role of mastitis varied and was interpreted by causes of death (underlying, intermediate, immediate, other significant). Mastitis was most commonly the underlying (28%) or both immediate and underlying cause of death (48%), and only seldom was it the immediate (4%) or intermediate (4%) cause of death. Mastitis occurred either as the only cause leading to death (mastitis only, MO; 39%), or with many other contributing diseases (multiple diseases, MD; 61%), which were interacting with mastitis and together leading to death. Between these groups (MO vs. MD), time of mastitis occurrence during lactation, producer-reported duration of illness, clinical signs, and medication differed, as well the histopathologic severity of mastitis. The cases where mastitis was the only initial insult occurred evenly throughout the entire lactation, but the cases with many interacting diseases were clustered in early lactation. In MD cows, cases of mastitis occurred concurrently with metritis (31%), aspiration pneumonia (24%), acute trauma or dystocia (15%), or with other diseases, such as ketosis, hepatic lipidosis, rumenitis, and abomasal diseases. For a pathologist, the gross mastitis diagnosis was most challenging at the beginning of the lactation, especially if inflammation was mild to moderate, suggesting the value of histopathologic examination being highest at that time. Also, producers reported mastitis signs less frequently if cow had many simultaneously occurring diseases. Therefore, even if clinical signs of other diseases are present, the udder should be considered a potential cause of illness and should be examined, especially in dry and transition-period cows.

Abstract
The CellCheck Dry Cow Consult (DCC) was developed by the CellCheck Technical Working Group to enable farmers to engage with their nominated vet to develop farm-specific selective dry cow therapy (SDCT) plans, where appropriate. This study evaluated the effect of the DCC on farmer decision-making around dry cow therapy, and the udder health impact of implementing SDCT, in study herds over the 2019 and 2020 dry periods. The DCC was a 3-h consult, delivered and funded as part of the Targeted Advisory Service on Animal Health (TASAH). Herds that completed a DCC were invited to register for a Dry Cow Review the following year. The combined data set for analysis across both years comprised of 439 herds and 25,357 cows. Available herd size ranged from 25 to 800. The median SCC of cows dried off with teat sealant only was 47,000 cells/ml before drying off in 2019 and 48,000 cells/ml at first milk recording in 2020, and 43,000 cells/ml before drying off in 2020 and 39,000 cells/ml at first milking recording in 2021. Following both the 2019 and 2020 dry periods, cows tended to converge toward a similar median SCC early in the following lactation, irrespective of prior dry cow treatment strategy. The uptake of SDCT was greater in Review herds, with 21% of cows receiving teat sealant only in 2020, compared with 16.3% of cows in herds participating in a Consult for the first time in 2020. At an individual cow level, in both years dry period new infection rate (NIR) was approximately 2.7% higher for cows treated with teat sealant only, than for those treated with both dry cow antibiotic tubes and teat sealant, and 1.2% higher than cows treated with antibiotic only. Regardless of treatment, there was a significant association between increasing parity and the risk of a dry period new infection. Increasing herd size had a statistically significant effect on the risk of dry period new infection rates. At a herd level, there was no statistically significant increase in NIR when SDCT was used compared with herds where blanket dry cow therapy was used. While not without risk, SDCT can be successfully implemented in Irish herds; however, constant attention to hygiene and management is essential. Though there are challenges to face, facilitating continued farmer education and engagement with professional guidance will be important.

Abstract
This observational study aimed to explore the association of farmer-driven selective dry cow therapy (DCT), milking routine and dry cow management practices with somatic cell count (SCC) in early lactation cows from 21 commercial dairy herds. Milking routine practices evaluated referred to cow preparation for milking, in-lactation mastitis management and recording. Dry cow management practices related to dry cow environment and cleaning, dry-off procedure, milk cessation strategy and calving environment. Data from 2,016 multiparous cows in 21 commercial spring-calving grazing dairy herds were available for the study. Herd owners self-reported DCT (the assignment and administration of DCT was at the discretion of the herd owners with no involvement from the research team), management practices during milking and the dry period. Cow-level last test-day SCC records in 2020 [range = 105 to 285 d in milk (DIM)] and first test-day records in 2021 (range = 5 to 60 DIM) were obtained from milk recording databases. Quarter-level milk sampling was carried out on all cows in late lactation of 2020 (range = 240 to 261 DIM) for bacterial culturing. Bacteriological results were used to define cows with intramammary infection (IMI) when ≥ 1 quarter sample resulted in bacterial growth and there were no contaminated samples from that cow. Mixed model analyses were used to evaluate the association of selective DCT, milking routine and dry cow management practices with cows' first test-day log 10 SCC (logSCC) in 2021. At dry-off in 2020, 47.6% of the cows were administered an internal teat sealant alone (ITS) while 52.4% were administered an antibiotic plus an internal teat sealant (AB+ITS). The mean herd-level percentage of cows with IMI was 19.7% (range = 9.8% to 39.5%); Staphylococcus aureus accounted for the majority of cow-level IMI (89.9%, 357/397). Between herds, the proportion of cows administered ITS ranged from 17.7% (14/79; in a herd with an IMI prevalence of 10.1%) to 86.8% (66/76; in a herd with an IMI prevalence of 27.6%). In total, 11.8% (105/889) and 29.8% (292/980) of cows that were administered ITS or AB+ITS had an IMI in late lactation 2020, respectively. The mean untransformed SCC at the last test-day in 2020 of cows administered ITS and AB+ITS was 55,000 and 197,200 cells/mL, respectively. The statistical analysis showed a significant interaction between selective DCT and milk yield at last test-day in 2020; cows with a milk yield of 15 kg and administered ITS had a 0.1 higher (untransformed SCC of 19,000 cells/mL higher) first test-day logSCC compared with cows administered AB+ITS. Additionally, greater parity, IMI in late lactation, higher log SCC at the last test-day in 2020 and longer dry periods were associated with higher logSCC at the first test-day in 2021. The current study identified cow- and herd-level management practices that could aid dairy farmers in improving the outcome of selective DCT and decrease early lactation SCC.

Abstract
In commercial dairy farms, mastitis is associated with increased antimicrobial use and associated resistance, which may affect milk production. This study aimed to develop sensor-based prediction models for naturally occurring clinical bovine mastitis using nine machine learning algorithms with data from 447 mastitic and 2146 healthy cows obtained from five commercial farms in Northeast China. The variables were related to daily activity, rumination time, and daily milk yield of cows, as well as milk electrical conductivity. Both Z-standardized and non-standardized datasets pertaining to four specific stages of lactation were used to train and test prediction models. For all four subgroups, the Z-standardized dataset yielded better results than those of the non-standardized one, with the multilayer artificial neural net algorithm showing the best performance. Variables of importance had a similar rank in this algorithm, indicating the consistency of these variables as predictors for bovine mastitis in commercial farms with similar automatic systems. Moreover, the peak milk yield (PMY) of mastitic cows was significantly higher than that of healthy cows (p < 0.005), indicating that high-yielding cattle are more prone to mastitis. Our results show that machine learning algorithms are effective tools for predicting mastitis in dairy cows for immediate intervention and management in commercial farms.

Abstract
This observational study aimed to determine the association of cow-level factors and herd-level housing and management practices during the dry period with indicators of udder health in early-lactation cows in automated milking system (AMS) herds. Data were collected from 166 commercial AMS dairy farms (mean ± standard deviation = 116 ± 111 milking cows; range = 39 to 1,200) across Canada between October 2018 and September 2020. Information on herd demographics, housing, and management practices was obtained on each farm using 2 surveys. On each farm, we selected all cows that had available Dairy Herd Improvement (DHI) somatic cell count (SCC) data for their last milk test before dry-off (>250 d in milk) and their first milk test after calving (5-45 d in milk). Data from 14,007 cows were included after excluding cows with a dry period of <30 d and >120 d. Using the SCC data, we calculated for each cow the somatic cell score (SCS) for the last milk test before dry-off (PreSCS) and the first milk test after calving (PostSCS), which we then averaged per herd at a test-day level. Intramammary infection (IMI) was estimated using cow SCC data. Each cow was classified as not infected (SCC <200,000 cells/mL) or infected (SCC ≥200,000 cells/mL) at her last milk test before dry-off and her first milk test after calving. Based on this classification, cows were further categorized as never infected, always infected, new IMI, or cured IMI. At the cow level, a higher PostSCS was associated with longer dry periods. The odds of having a new IMI were higher for cows of higher parity and that had lower 305-d milk yield before dry-off. Cows with lower parity were more likely to cure an IMI. At the herd level, a higher 305-d milk yield before dry-off was associated with a lower incidence of new IMI and a higher incidence of cured IMI. Separating cows into a different pen as preparation for dry-off tended to be associated with a lower PostSCS and incidence of new IMI. At dry-off, herds that used teat sealants and blanket antibiotic dry cow therapy also had lower PostSCS. During the dry period, housing cows in different groups was associated with a higher PostSCS and a lower incidence of cured IMI, while housing cows in both pack pens and stalls compared with only pack pens was associated with a lower incidence of new IMI. Finally, placing cows onto the AMS to be milked one or more days after calving tended to be associated with a lower PostSCS compared with placing them in the AMS within the first day postpartum. In summary, indicators of udder health in early-lactation cows in AMS herds were associated with several cow-level factors and herd-level housing and management practices before dry-off, at dry-off, during the dry period, and at the beginning of lactation. Thus, if some of the associations identified are causal, AMS producers may be able to improve udder health through modifications of housing and management practices.

Abstract
Bacteriophage-derived endolysins are a novel class of antimicrobials known to rapidly kill bacteria, including antibiotic-resistant strains. We here engineered endolysins against the bovine mastitis pathogens Streptococcus uberis, Streptococcus agalactiae and Streptococcus dysgalactiae, also targeting intracellular survival and biofilm formation. For this purpose, high-throughput DNA assembly was used to create a library with >80,000 theoretical endolysin variants for screening of their bacteriolytic activity against Gram-positive isolates from (sub)clinically affected cows. This lytic activity was evaluated by turbidity reduction and time-kill assays in phosphate-buffered saline and pasteurized whole cow's milk to allow a rank up of the most potent leading candidates. A top candidate was selected with a 4.0 log killing efficacy against S. uberis, also showing similar activity against S. agalactiae and S. dysgalactiae. This top candidate eradicated S. uberis biofilm and showed intracellular activity in two bovine mammary epithelial cell lines as was confirmed by confocal microscopy. A potentiating effect on cloxacillin, a beta-lactam penicillin used to intramammarily treat bovine Gram-positive mastitis, was observed for this top candidate endolysin in raw cow's milk from (sub)clinically infected udders. Our in vitro results indicate that engineered endolysins may have a future role as add-on in the treatment of bovine streptococcal mastitis.

Abstract
The routine use of intramammary antimicrobial products in all dairy cows at the beginning of the dry period is no longer allowed in European Union (EU) countries due to the new Regulation (EU) 2019/6 to reduce antimicrobial resistance. This study investigated the application of a selective dry cow therapy scheme and the risk factors of high individual milk somatic cell count (SCC) and individual neutrophil count in early lactation, as a response to the application of a selective dry cow therapy (SDCT) protocol. The study was carried out on three commercial farms, and a total of 243 lactating cows were monitored at the end of lactation and at the beginning of the next one, 91 of which were dried off without the use of antimicrobials (NoT) based on milk SCC, differential somatic cell count (DSCC), and the response of Vetscan DC-Q milk analyser, using a secret algorithm. The remaining 152 cows received antimicrobials (T). After calving, similar means were observed between the two treatment groups for SCC (4.8 vs 4.9 log10 cells/ml for T and NoT, respectively, P = 0.5) and total milk leucocyte count (TLC) (5 vs 5.1 log10 cells/ml for T and NoT, respectively, P = 0.7) in milk. However, the use of antimicrobials led to a lower DSCC (58 vs 64% for T and NoT, respectively, P = 0.01) and lower percentage of neutrophils (59 vs 64% for T and NoT, respectively, P = 0.05), although the levels of DSCC and percentage of neutrophils in cows dried off without antimicrobials remained lower than the risk threshold suggested by the international literature. A logistic regression was computed after the application of selective dry cow therapy to identify risk factors of high milk SCC (≥100 000 cells/mL) at the beginning of lactation. Increased milk SCC after calving was related to high SCC at the end of lactation and abandonment of antimicrobial therapy at dry-off. Moreover, the length of the dry period, milk protein content, and flank cleanliness in the last test day before dry-off were other factors in the logistic regression. Neutrophil counts at the beginning of the next lactation were affected by the same factors that influenced SCC, together with milk production, TLC, and macrophages on the last test day. The results obtained in these studied farms showed that selective dry cow therapy may be applied without adversely affecting the next lactation.

Abstract
Milk and dairy from animals with subclinical mastitis infections are marketable. Mastitis is detected with the somatic cell count (SCC). The EU regulation, among the stricter ones, limits an average of 400,000 somatic cells/ml in milk. Other countries have higher or no thresholds. This level suggests 40% of infected animals, and we indeed consume mastitic milk and dairy. A worldwide prevalence of dairy cattle and buffaloes with subclinical mastitis is estimated to range between 34 and 46%. The current food safety regulations account for mastitis pathogens, their toxins, and the risk of antimicrobial residues, but milk from animals with mastitis contains also compounds that derive from an immune response and inflammation process with biological function for the offspring. To the best of the current knowledge, it cannot be excluded that these compounds do not interfere with human homeostasis and that they do not contribute to redox or cytokine dysregulation that, in turn, could promote certain chronic diseases. These compounds include radicals, oxidation products, nitrosamines, and proinflammatory cytokines with nitrosamines being already recognized as probable carcinogens. Mastitis also alters the composition of caseins, plasmin, and plasminogen activators, which may be related to increased transformation into amyloid with similar characteristics as the fibrils associated with Alzheimer's disease. We should determine whether these bioactive compounds could, alone or in combination, represent any long-term risk to the consumer's health. Adapted regulations and concomitant subsidies for farmers are suggested, for sensing tools that reveal individual SCC and mastitis at milking. Frequent SCC determination is the prerequisite for any mastitis control program.

Abstract
Recently, the use of antimicrobials on dairy farms has been significantly limited from both the legislative and consumer points of view. This study aims to check the efficacy of selective dry cow therapy (SDCT) versus blanket dry cow therapy (BDCT) on bovine udder in healthy animals. SDTC is when an antibiotic is administered only to infected cows, compared with BDCT, where all cows receive an antimicrobial, regardless of their infection status. The milk samples were collected from enrolled Holstein Friesian cows 7 days before dry-off (T0) and 10 days after calving (T1) to assess somatic cell count (SCC), intramammary infections (IMIs), and milk microbiota variation. After pre-drying sampling, cows are randomly assigned to the following treatments: internal teat sealant alone (ITS; 24 cows), which is a treatment in a cow that does not receive antibiotics in SDTC, or in combination with intramammary antibiotic treatment (A+ITS; 22 cows). Non-statistically significant results are found between the two treatment groups at T1 for SCC, milk yield, and alpha diversity in milk microbiota. A statistically (p < 0.033) T1 IMI decrease is reported in the A+ITS group, and a significant beta diversity analysis is shown between the two timepoints (p = 0.009). This study confirms the possibility of selective drying without new IMI risk or increased SCC at calving, considering healthy cows without contagious infections and SCC values >200,000 cells/mL in the previous lactation.

Evaluating the efficacy of internal teat sealants at dry-off for the prevention of new intra-mammary infections during the dry-period or clinical mastitis during early lactation in dairy cows: A systematic review update and sequential meta-analysis. Abstract
A systematic review and Bayesian sequential pair-wise meta-analyses were conducted to assess the efficacy of internal teat sealants (ITS) administered at dry-off in comparison to no treatment for preventing new intramammary infections (IMI) and clinical mastitis (CM) in dairy cattle. This work updated a previous systematic review and network meta-analysis conducted in 2019 but employed a narrowed scope and eligibility. The updated eligibility included studies that used ITS without concurrent therapy compared to a no treatment control (NTC), a study population of dairy cows or prepartum heifers, controlled trial design, and assessed one of the following outcomes: incidence of new IMI at calving or CM during the first 30 days in milk (DIM). Risk of bias was assessed through the Cochrane Risk of Bias 2.0 tool. Evidence quality was assessed using Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE). There were 141 potentially relevant records identified from the updated search conducted on April 29, 2021, with a publication date restriction of 2018 or later; one study passed full-text screening and was included. Of the 32 studies included in the previous review, 12 studies were relevant after applying the modified eligibility criteria, totaling 13 studies included in this review (12 addressing IMI at calving outcome, 4 addressing CM at 30 DIM outcome). Sequential meta-analysis was conducted for both outcomes in R 3.6.0. Decisions for stopping were assessed at each analysis for intervention effect or futility in finding an effect based on a priori minimum clinically relevant values (ORδ =0.5, 0.75). ITS at dry-off significantly reduced odds of new IMI at calving compared to NTC at the second meta-analysis (OR2 =0.27, 95% CI=0.22-0.34), and onward (OR12 =0.29, 95% CI=0.27-0.32). For CM at 30 DIM, significance was reached at the second meta-analysis (OR2 =0.59, 95% CI=0.47-0.73), and onward (OR3 =0.47, 95% CI=0.42-0.51). Stopping for effect occurred at the second analysis in both outcomes and ORδs, but low-quality evidence and heterogeneity concerns were noted. A continuity-correction to include zero-event CM studies showed significance at the third meta-analysis (OR3 =0.79, 95% CI=0.73-0.86), stopping for effect at the fourth for ORδ = 0.75 (OR4 =0.77, 95% CI=0.72-0.83), and stopping for futility at the second for ORδ = 0.5 (OR2 =0.94, 95% CI=0.75-1.20), but the main CM analysis was considered more appropriate due to the sensitivity analysis' very low-quality evidence assessment. Based on sequential evidence available, sufficient research currently exists for practical use, and cessation of future research until substantial changes to ITS application occur may be appropriate.

Abstract
Antibiotic stewardship on dairy farms can be heightened through the implementation of selective dry-cow therapy (SDCT). However, some producers are concerned that this practice may be related to poor udder health outcomes in cows with high milk production at the time of dry-off. The objective of this study was to evaluate if the effect of culture-guided SDCT (Cult-SDCT) and algorithm-guided SDCT (Alg-SDCT) on dry-period intramammary infection (IMI) dynamics and postcalving udder health and performance [when compared with blanket dry-cow therapy (BDCT)] varied according to milk production level before dry-off. Data were compiled from clinical trials conducted in the United States and Canada that compared Cult-SDCT and Alg-SDCT to a positive control, i.e., BDCT. In those trials, cows were enrolled 1-2 d before dry-off, randomized to their dry-cow therapy strategy and followed until 120 d in milk of the subsequent lactation. The number of cows and quarters in the final data set were 1,485 and 5,097, respectively. Measured outcomes included quarter-level antibiotic use at dry-off, quarter-level IMI prevalence after calving, quarter-level dry-period IMI cure risk, quarter-level dry-period new IMI risk, cow-level clinical mastitis and removal from the herd during 1-120 d in milk, and somatic cell count and milk yield during 1-120 DIM. The primary objective of analysis was to investigate if the effect of Cult-SDCT and Alg-SDCT on these outcomes, when compared with BDCT, varied according to milk production level before dry-off. To do this, each cow was classified as having low, mid or high production, based on her milk yield tertile group at the most recent herd test before enrollment (low: <23.7 kg/d, mid: 23.7 to 30.4 kg/d, and high >30.4 kg/d). Multivariable generalized estimating equations were used to estimate risk differences and differences in means, and Cox regression was used to estimate hazard ratios. For Cult-SDCT, the proportion of quarters treated with dry-cow antibiotics within each milk production level were 40.7% (low), 41.7% (mid) and 47.2% (high). For Alg-SDCT, the proportions were 60.6% (low), 38.7% (mid), and 35.1% (high). Measures of udder health were not markedly different when comparing Cult-SDCT to BDCT and Alg-SDCT to BDCT. This was consistently observed in low, mid and high producing cows. In conclusion, the findings from this study indicate that Cult-SDCT and Alg-SDCT can be successfully implemented in cows of all milk production levels.

Abstract
The drying-off is a stressful stage of the lactation cycle of dairy cows that deeply affects cows' metabolism, inflammatory status, and immune system. The promising effects observed during the transition period resulting from supplementation with Aloe arborescens Mill. suggest its potential utility during this phase. A group of 23 Holstein dairy cows with somatic cell count (SCC) less than 200 × 103 cells/ml and without intramammary infections were enroled in the study. Cows were divided into two groups: one orally receiving 10 g/day of A. arborescens Mill. lyophilized powder (AL; 11 cows) between -7 and 7 days from dry-off (DFD), and a control group (CTR; 12 cows). From -14 to 7 DFD and 7 and 28 days from calving, the body condition score and rectal temperature were determined, and rumen fluid, feces, milk, and blood samples were collected. Daily rumination times and milk yield were recorded. Data were analyzed through repeated measures mixed models. Compared to the CTR group, AL cows tended to show reduced production of volatile fatty acids in the rumen with acetate proportion that tended to be higher and valerate proportion that was lower. Moreover, Aloe supplementation caused a reduction in fecal dry matter. At the end of drying-off, AL cows presented better liver function, as suggested by higher paraoxonase plasma concentrations at 7 DFD, higher glucose, and lower urea, but showed increased reactive oxygen metabolites. Aloe supplementation at dry-off ameliorated inflammatory status after calving (lower haptoglobin and ceruloplasmin levels), and improved milk yield in the first weeks of subsequent lactation, without influencing milk composition, SCC, and incidence of intramammary infections. These results confirmed the positive effects of Aloe administration on liver function in dairy cows but indicate the need for further studies investigating the effects of Aloe on rumen fermentation profile and oxidative status.

Abstract
The development and implementation of new and safe means of treating subclinical mastitis (SM) in the production process remains a pressing problem. Our study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effect of the Bacillus megaterium NCH 55 strain on cow SM. All animals with signs of SM were fed with a basic diet with probiotic’s addition of 15 g/per day. The experiment was conveyed in 30 consecutive days. Milk and blood were collected on the 7th, 15th, and 30th day of the experiment. Daily milk yield was increased by 32.2% and somatic cell count was decreased from 290.00±32.12 to 96.80±39.03 ths/cm3. A decrease in inflammation was indicated by a decrease in POM370 (by 2.2 times) and POM430 (by 2.8 times). No significant changes in the blood serum indices of cows were observed. A probiotic’s positive effect has been established on the treatment of SM. The probiotic B. megaterium NСH 55 can be considered as an alternative to antibiotics and other chemotherapeutic drugs for treating SM in cows.

Abstract
Administering intramammary antimicrobials to all mammary quarters of dairy cows at drying-off [i.e., blanket dry cow therapy (BDCT)] has been a mainstay of mastitis prevention and control. However, as udder health has considerably improved over recent decades with reductions in intramammary infection prevalence at drying-off and the introduction of teat sealants, BDCT may no longer be necessary on all dairy farms, thereby supporting antimicrobial stewardship efforts. This narrative review summarizes available literature regarding current dry cow therapy practices and associated impacts of selective dry cow therapy (SDCT) on udder health, milk production, economics, antimicrobial use, and antimicrobial resistance. Various methods to identify infections at drying-off that could benefit from antimicrobial treatment are described for selecting cows or mammary quarters for treatment, including utilizing somatic cell count thresholds, pathogen identification, previous clinical mastitis history, or a combination of criteria. Selection methods may be enacted at the herd, cow, or quarter levels. Producers' and veterinarians' motivations for antimicrobial use are discussed. Based on review findings, SDCT can be adopted without negative consequences for udder health and milk production, and concurrent teat sealant use is recommended, especially in udder quarters receiving no intramammary antimicrobials. Furthermore, herd selection should be considered for SDCT implementation in addition to cow or quarter selection, as BDCT may still be temporarily necessary in some herds for optimal mastitis control. Costs and benefits of SDCT vary among herds, whereas impacts on antimicrobial resistance remain unclear. In summary, SDCT is a viable management option for maintaining udder health and milk production while improving antimicrobial stewardship in the dairy industry.

Abstract
Bovine mastitis at calving or early lactation is often associated with intra-mammary bacterial infections (IMI) at drying-off (DO) or during the dry period (DP). The IMI risk is associated with management routines at the herd, but knowledge on how farmers and veterinarians comply with national recommendations is scarce, as is their attitudes to the importance of such routines. Therefore, the main aims of this study were to collect information on farmer routines and attitudes, and on veterinary advice and attitudes to DO and DP. Associations between routines and advice, and demographic herd and veterinary variables were also studied. Web-based questionnaires were sent to 2472 dairy farmers and 517 veterinarians. The answers were summarized descriptively, and associations with demographics were evaluated using univariable regression models. The response rate was 14% for farmers and 25% for veterinarians. Routines and advice were in line with recommendations at the time of the study in many, but not all, areas of questioning. Significant associations between herd routines or veterinary advice and demographic variables were also found. Milking system and post-graduate training were the variables associated with the largest number of farmer and veterinary answers, respectively. In conclusion, the results indicate a need for more education on good routines during DO and DP. It was also clear that the national recommendations valid at the time of the study were in need of revision.

Abstract
BACKGROUND On dairy farms, the prophylactic use of antibiotics at drying-off is being increasingly challenged. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of antibiotic dry-cow therapy (DCT) or non-antibiotic DCT on dairy cow performance and udder health. METHODS Holstein cows (n = 285) with low risk of intramammary infection (<200,000 cells/ml) were assigned to one of two treatments, either antibiotic DCT (A + TS; antibiotic treatment in combination with internal and external teat sealants) or non-antibiotic DCT (TS; internal and external teat sealant only). RESULTS There was no statistically significant (p > 0.05) difference between treatments for mean cow milk yield, composition or energy corrected milk yield. Mean somatic cell count was 0.16 loge higher in the TS treatment (95% confidence interval [CI]: -0.00 loge to -0.33 loge ) compared to A + TS treatment (p = 0.047). A 50% increase in the number of mastitis cases was observed in the A + TS treatment compared to TS treatment (odds ratio = 1.5, 95% CI: 0.80%-3.01%), although this was not significant. There was no statistical evidence (p > 0.05) that treatment had any effect on colostrum quality and composition. CONCLUSION Results indicate that non-antibiotic DCT can be adopted in 'low-risk' cows who were offered grass silage-based diets in cubicle accommodation, with low risk of adverse effects on performance or udder health.

Abstract
Antibiotic dry cow therapy (aDCT) at the end of lactation is an effective mastitis control measure. Selective dry cow therapy means that only infected or presumed-infected cows are treated, instead of aDCT being used as a treatment for all cows. Because antibiotic resistance poses a global threat, livestock production is under increasing pressure to reduce antibiotic use. Changes in management should not, however, impair animal welfare or cause significant economic losses. Our objective was to compare milk yield and somatic cell count (SCC) between aDCT-treated and untreated cows in herds that used selective aDCT, taking into account risk factors for reduced yield and high SCC. The information source was 2015 to 2017 Dairy Herd Improvement data, with 4,720 multiparous cows from 172 Finnish dairy farms. The response variables were test-day milk yield (kg/d) and naturally log-transformed composite SCC (×1,000 cells/mL) during the first 154 d in milk (DIM). The statistical tool was a linear mixed-effects model with 2-level random intercepts, cows nested within herds, and a first-order autoregressive [AR(1)] correlation structure. The overall proportion of aDCT-treated cows was 25% (1,176/4,720). Due to the interaction effect, SCC on the last test day prior to dry-off affected postcalving milk yield differently in aDCT-treated cows than in untreated cows. A higher SCC prior to dry-off correlated with a greater daily yield difference after calving between cows treated and untreated. The majority of cows had SCC < 200,000 cells/mL before dry-off, and as SCC before dry-off decreased, difference in yield between aDCT-treated and untreated cows decreased. Postcalving SCC was lower for aDCT-treated cows compared with untreated cows. To illustrate, for cows with an SCC of 200,000 cells/mL before dry-off, compared with untreated cows, aDCT-treated cows produced 0.97 kg/d more milk and, at 45 DIM, had an SCC that was 20,000 cells/mL lower. Higher late-lactation SCC and lactational mastitis treatments were associated with higher postcalving SCC. A dry period lasting more than 30 d was associated with higher yields but not with SCC. Our findings indicate that a missed aDCT treatment for a high-SCC cow has a negative effect on subsequent lactation milk yield and SCC, which emphasizes the importance of accurate selection of cows to be treated.

Abstract
The incidence of mastitis increases with parity in dairy cattle and multiparous cows are often treated at drying off to limit the risk of udder health issues and support mammary gland tissues recovery. Milk somatic cells count (SCC, cells/mL) comprises different white blood cells fractions and is worldwide used to monitor and genetically improve udder health. Nevertheless, only certain SCC fractions increase when an udder inflammation occurs. Considering that antibiotic use for preventive purposes will be forbidden in 2022, we compared two different dry therapy protocols, blanket (BDCT) and selective (SDCT), on different SCC fractions in healthy quarters milk. Multiparous Holstein cows were enrolled in a randomized controlled trial and SCC, neutrophils, macrophages, lymphocytes, polymorphonuclear cells (PMN) and differential somatic cell count (DSCC) recorded after the experimental drying off were available. Significant differences were observed between the two protocols, with more favorable parameters in BDCT than SDCT cows. Results showed that moving from BDCT to SDCT is expected to significantly increase some SCC fractions, such as PMN, in healthy quarters. The baseline SCC level at the onset of lactation was greater in cows under SDCT than BDCT. Although not significant, clinical mastitis prevalence was numerically lower in BDCT (7.32%) than SDCT (8.62%). In this study we referred to a limited number of cows, but still findings will be useful to improve the knowledge on the impact of SDCT on milk SCC fractions in healthy quarters.
