Abstract
Xanthine is derived from hypoxanthine by xanthine oxidase (XOD), a flavoprotein containing molybdenum and non-haem iron, sulfur and from guanine by guanine deaminase enzyme. Xanthine is oxidized into uric acid by XOD. Xanthine is used as an indicator of fish freshness, based on the reactions in which ATP is degraded into xanthine and its quantity increases with time of fish death. Fresh fish meat is required in food industry for making high quality items. The determination of xanthine in biological fluids is also used in diagnosing and curing many diseases like renal failure, gout, xanthinuria, hyperuricemia. Various methods are available for detection of xanthine but most of them are complicated, time consuming less sensitive & specific and require expensive instrumental setup and trained person to operate. Enzyme based biosensors and non enzymic sensors overcome these disadvantages, as these are simple, rapid, specific, sensitive and easy to operate. Present review describes xanthine biosensors, which work optimally between pH 3.5-9.0, temperature 25 °C-65 °C, xanthine concentration ranging from 0.001-50 × 104 µM. These biosensors have also been used to measure xanthine concentration in beverages, urine and serum samples. Various modified electrodes have been discussed for the detection of xanthine using both enzymatic and non-enzymatic approaches in the present review.

Abstract
The degradation of ATP-related compounds is an important biochemical process that reflects the freshness of aquatic products after death. There has been considerable interest in investigating the factors affecting the degradation of ATP-related compounds in aquatic products and in developing techniques to detect them. This review provides the latest knowledge on the degradation mechanisms of ATP-related compounds during the storage of aquatic products and discusses the latest advances in ATP-related compound detection techniques. The degradation mechanisms discussed include mainly degradation pathways, endogenous enzymes, and microbial mechanisms of action. Microbial activity is the main reason for the degradation of IMP and related products during the mid to late storage of aquatic products, mainly through the related enzymes produced by microorganisms. Further elucidation of the degradation mechanisms of ATP-related compounds provides new ideas for quality control techniques in raw aquatic products during storage. The development of new technologies for the detection of ATP-related compounds has become a significant area of research. And, biosensors further improve the efficiency and accuracy of detection and have potential application prospects. The development of biosensor back-end modalities (test strips, fluorescent probes, and artificial intelligence) has accelerated the practical application of biosensors for the detection of ATP-related compounds.

Abstract
First-generation amperometric xanthine (XAN) biosensors, assembled via layer-by-layer methodology and featuring xerogels doped with gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs), were the focus of this study and involved both fundamental exploration of the materials as well as demonstrated usage of the biosensor in both clinical (disease diagnosis) and industrial (meat freshness) applications. Voltammetry and amperometry were used to characterize and optimize the functional layers of the biosensor design including a xerogel with and without embedded xanthine oxidase enzyme (XOx) and an outer, semi-permeable blended polyurethane (PU) layer. Specifically, the porosity/hydrophobicity of xerogels formed from silane precursors and different compositions of PU were examined for their impact on the XAN biosensing mechanism. Doping the xerogel layer with different alkanethiol protected Au-NPs was demonstrated as an effective means for enhancing biosensor performance including improved sensitivity, linear range, and response time, as well as stabilizing XAN sensitivity and discrimination against common interferent species (selectivity) over time-all attributes matching or exceeding most other reported XAN sensors. Part of the study focuses on deconvoluting the amperometric signal generated by the biosensor and determining the contribution from all of the possible electroactive species involved in natural purine metabolism (e.g., uric acid, hypoxanthine) as an important part of designing XAN sensors (schemes amenable to miniaturization, portability, or low production cost). Effective XAN sensors remain relevant as potential tools for both early diagnosis of diseases as well as for industrial food monitoring.

Abstract
Food security is significantly affected by the mass production of agricultural produce and goods, the growing number of imported foods, and new eating and consumption habits. These changed circumstances bring food safety issues arising from food spoilage to the fore, making food safety control essential. Simple and fast screening methods have been developed to detect pathogens and biomarkers indicating the freshness of food for safety. In addition to the traditional, sequential, chemical analytical and microbiological methods, fast, highly sensitive, automated methods suitable for serial tests have appeared. At the same time, biosensor research is also developing dynamically worldwide, both in terms of the analytes to be determined and the technical toolkit. Consequently, the rapid development of biosensors, including electrochemical-based biosensors, has led to significant advantages in the quantitative detection and screening of food contaminants. These techniques show great specificity for the biomarkers tested and provide adequate analytical accuracy even in complex food matrices. In our review article, we summarize, in separate chapters, the electrochemical biosensors developed for the most important food groups and the food safety issues they can ensure, with particular respect to meat and fish products, milk and dairy products, as well as alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

Abstract
Food packaging has a crucial function in the modern food industry. New food packaging technologies seek to meet consumers and industrial's demands. Changes related to food production, sale practices and consumers' lifestyles, along with environmental awareness and the advance in new areas of knowledge (such as nanotechnology or biotechnology), act as driving forces to develop smart packages that can extend food shelf-life, keeping and supervising their innocuousness and quality and also taking care of the environment. This review describes the main concepts and types of active and intelligent food packaging, focusing on recent progress and new trends using biodegradable and biobased polymers. Numerous studies show the great possibilities of these materials. Future research needs to focus on some important aspects such as possibilities to scale-up, costs, regulatory aspects, and consumers' acceptance, to make these systems commercially viable.

Abstract
Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized separately and loaded onto the expanded layers of exfoliated graphite (EG) to form a silver nanoparticle-exfoliated graphite nanocomposite (AgNPs-EG). The AgNPs-EG was compressed into a pellet (0.6 cm in diameter) and used to prepare an electrochemical sensor for bisphenol A (BPA) in standard samples and in thermal paper. The synthesized materials were characterized by ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry, X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray. The electrochemical behavior of BPA on the AgNPs-EG sensor was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry. Under optimized experimental conditions, the oxidation peak current was linearly proportional to bisphenol A concentrations in the range from 5.0 to100 μM, with a coefficient of determination (R2 ) of 0.9981. The obtained limit of detection of the method was 0.23 μM. The fabricated sensor was able to overcome electrode fouling with good reproducibility (RSD = 2.62%, n = 5) by mechanical polishing of the electrode on emery paper. The proposed method was successfully applied to determine bisphenol A in thermal paper samples and demonstrated good accuracy of 93.1 to 113% recovery.

Abstract
A novel hybrid with three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical CuS@Pd core-shell cauliflowers decorated on nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (CuS@Pd/N-RGO) has been prepared by a facile wet-chemical route without utilizing any template molecules and surfactants. The characterization results reveal that the 3D flower-like structure of CuS "core" is composed of interconnecting nanoplates, which is conductive to the loading of Pd nanoparticles' "shell" and results in the robust interaction between the core and shell for the formation of CuS@Pd cauliflowers. Anchoring such appealing CuS@Pd cauliflowers on the two-dimensional N-RGO can efficaciously inhibit the aggregation of CuS@Pd cauliflowers and accelerate the kinetics of xanthine oxidation. Benefiting from the multi-functional properties and unique morphology, the sensor constructed by CuS@Pd/N-RGO exhibits excellent performance for non-enzymatic detection of xanthine including a wide detection range of 0.7-200.0 μM (0.94 V vs. SCE), a low detection limit of 28 nM (S/N = 3), high reproducibility (relative standard deviation (RSD) = 4.1%), and commendable stability (retained 90% of the initial electrochemical responses after storage for 30 days), which is amongst the best of various electrochemical sensors reported for xanthine assays till date. Reliable and satisfying recoveries (95-105%, RSD ≤ 4.1%) are achieved for xanthine detection in real samples. The inspiring results make the uniquely structural CuS@Pd/N-RGO greatly promising in non-enzymatic electrochemical sensing applications. Abstract
The use of L-cysteine modified silver nanoparticles (Cys-capped AgNPs) as a colorimetric probe for determination of vitamin B1 (thiamine) is described in the present work. This method is based on the measurement of red shift of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) band of Cys-capped AgNPs in the region of 200–800 nm. The color of Cys-capped AgNPs was changed from yellow to colorless by the addition of vitamin B1. The mechanism for detection of vitamin B1 is based on the electrostatic interaction between positively charged vitamin B1, which causes the red shift of LSPR band from 390 nm to 580 nm. The interaction between Cys-capped AgNPs and vitamin B1 was theoretically explored by density function theory (DFT) using LANL2DZ basis sets with help of Gaussian 09 (C.01) program. The morphology, size distribution and optical properties of Cys-capped AgNPs were characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM), UV-Visible spectrophotometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) techniques. The method is linear in the range of 25–500 μg mL−1 with correlation coefficient (R2) 0.992 and limit of detection of 7.0 μg mL−1. The advantages of using Cys-capped AgNPs as a chemical sensor in colorimetry assay are being simple, low cost and selective for detection of vitamin B1 from food (peas, grapes and tomato) and environmental (river, sewage and pond) water samples.

Abstract
Reliable and sensitive detection of xanthine has important medical and biological significance. In this work, a novel three-dimensional (3D) conductive polymer hydrogel of polyaniline (PAni) was feasibly prepared using aniline (Ani), amino trimethylene phosphonic acid (ATMP) and ammonium persulfate ((NH4)2S2O8) as monomer, gelatinizing agent and oxidizing agent, respectively. Protonation of aniline can be achieved by ATMP, inducing good conductivity of the obtained hydrogel. ATMP remained the chelating abilities in the conductive hydrogel, enabling further immobilization with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) functionalized by a luminol derivative, N-(aminobutyl)-N-(ethylisoluminol) (ABEI). ABEI-Ag@PAni-ATMP exhibited an enhanced performance of solid-state electrochemiluminescence (ECL). Integrated with xanthine oxidase (XOD), the proposed biosensor can be applied in the detection of xanthine via in-situ generated hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and present a low detection limit of 9.6 nM, a wide linear range (from 0.01 to 200 μM) and excellent stability.

Abstract
The detection of Cu2+ ion, one of the metal ions substantial in cerebral physiology, is critical in studying brain activities and understanding brain functions. However, repetitive measurements of Cu2+ in the progress of physiological and pathological events is still challenging, because lack of the platform for repetitive on-line detection-regeneration cycle. Herein we report the design of a regenerated electrochemical biosensor combined with the in vivo microdialysis system. In this biosensor, hyperbranched polyethyleneimine (hPEI) acts as a regenerated recognition unit for Cu2+. Just by a simple rinse of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) disodium salt, the Cu2+ and Cu+ ions on the biosensor interface were chelated with EDTA disodium salt, thus achieving the regeneration of the biosensor. In addition, 6-(ferrocenyl)hexanethiol (FcHT) serves as the inner reference moiety to elevate the sensing accuracy over regeneration cycles. As a result, this ratiometric electrochemical biosensor not only revealed high sensitivity and selectivity, but also exhibited excellent stability during multiple regeneration processing. This biosensor was capable of determining Cu2+ with a linear range between 0.05 and 12 μM and low detection limit (LOD) of 13 nM. Then, the platform has been successfully applied in repetitive Cu2+ analysis in rat brain under global cerebral ischemia/reperfusion events. The combination of results from 7 rats indicates global cerebral ischemia caused an obvious increase of the Cu2+ level, while reperfusion brought this level back to normal.

Abstract
ATP degradation is one of the most important biochemical changes in the post-mortem muscle of fish and shellfish. This process has long been recognized as an accurate way to evaluate freshness of fish and shellfish product. This review updates and condenses the overall history and recent advances in understanding the role of ATP-related compounds in post-mortem fish and shellfish muscle including a discussion of key analytical methods, their use as a freshness indicator, their roles in flavor enhancement, the factors affecting their transitions, and the possible mechanisms responsible for their impact on flavor and freshness. Moreover, some challenges and future directions for research regarding ATP-related compounds in fish and shellfish flavor and freshness are presented. With increasing consumer demands for fresh products with extended shelf life, understanding the relationships between ATP-related compounds and their involvement in the freshness and umami taste is a prerequisite for assuring the high quality of fish and shellfish.

Abstract
The aim of this study was the electrochemical detection of the adenosine-3-phosphate degradation product, xanthine, using a new xanthine biosensor based on a hybrid bio-nanocomposite platform which has been successfully employed in the evaluation of meat freshness. In the design of the amperometric xanthine biosensor, chitosan-polypyrrole-gold nanoparticles fabricated by an in situ chemical synthesis method on a glassy carbon electrode surface was used to enhance electron transfer and to provide good enzyme affinity. Electrochemical studies were carried out by the modified electrode with immobilized xanthine oxidase on it, after which the biosensor was tested to ascertain the optimization parameters. The Biosensor exhibited a very good linear range of 1-200 μM, low detection limit of 0.25 μM, average response time of 8 seconds, and was not prone to significant interference from uric acid, ascorbic acid, glucose, and sodium benzoate. The resulting bio-nanocomposite xanthine biosensor was tested with fish, beef, and chicken real-sample measurements.

Abstract
Nanosensors have wide applications in the food industry. Nanosensors based on quantum dots for heavy metal and organophosphate pesticides detection, and nanocomposites as indicators for shelf life of fish/meat products, have served as important tools for food quality and safety assessment. Luminescent labels consisting of NPs conjugated to aptamers have been popular for rapid detection of infectious and foodborne pathogens. Various detection technologies, including microelectromechanical systems for gas analytes, microarrays for genetically modified foods, and label-free nanosensors using nanowires, microcantilevers, and resonators are being applied extensively in the food industry. An interesting aspect of nanosensors has also been in the development of the electronic nose and electronic tongue for assessing organoleptic qualities, such as, odor and taste of food products. Real-time monitoring of food products for rapid screening, counterfeiting, and tracking has boosted ingenious, intelligent, and innovative packaging of food products. This chapter will give an overview of the contribution of nanotechnology-based biosensors in the food industry, ongoing research, technology advancements, regulatory guidelines, future challenges, and industrial outlook.

Abstract
Interest in electrochemical analysis of purine nucleobases and few other important purine derivatives has been growing rapidly. Over the period of the past decade, the design of electrochemical biosensors has been focused on achieving high sensitivity and efficiency. The range of existing electrochemical methods with carbon electrode displays the highest rate in the development of biosensors. Moreover, modification of electrode surfaces based on nanomaterials is frequently used due to their extraordinary conductivity and surface to volume ratio. Different strategies for modifying electrode surfaces facilitate electron transport between the electrode surface and biomolecules, including DNA, oligonucleotides and their components. This review aims to summarize recent developments in the electrochemical analysis of purine derivatives, as well as discuss different applications.

Abstract
This work has demonstrated an amplified and selective detection platform using enzyme-scaffolded-gold nanoclusters as signal label, coupling with mesoporous carbon nitride (MCN) and gold nanoparticles (GNPs) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE). Streptavidin-horseradish peroxidase (SA-HRP) has been integrated with gold nanoclusters (GNCs) as scaffold using a simple, fast and non-toxic method. The mechanisms of enzymatic amplification, redox cycling and signal amplification by this biosensor were discussed in detail. GNCs might perform important roles as electrocatalyst as well as electron transducer in these processes. The concentrations of reagents and the reaction times of these reagents were optimized to improve the analytical performances. Under the optimized condition, the signal response to enzyme-scaffolded-gold nanoclusters catalyzed reaction was linearly related to the natural logarithm of the target nucleic acid concentration in the range from 10(-17)M to 10(-9)M with a correlation coefficient of 0.9946, and the detection limit was 8.0×10(-18)M (S/N=3). Besides, synthesized oligonucleotide as well as Phanerochaete chrysosporium MnP fragments amplified using polymerase chain reaction and digested by restriction endonucleases were tested. Furthermore, this biosensor exhibited good precision, stability, sensitivity, and selectivity, and discriminated satisfactorily against mismatched nucleic acid samples of similar lengths.

Abstract
A novel amperometric biosensor for xanthine was developed based on covalent immobilization of crude xanthine oxidase (XOD) extracted from bovine milk onto a hybrid nanocomposite film via glutaraldehyde. Toward the preparation of the film, a stable colloids solution of core-shell Fe3O4/polyaniline nanoparticles (PANI/Fe3O4 NPs) was dispersed in solution containing chitosan (CHT) and H2PtCl6 and electrodeposited over the surface of a carbon paste electrode (CPE) in one step. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrophotometry, cyclic voltammetry (CV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used for characterization of the electrode surface. The developed biosensor (XOD/CHT/Pt NPs/PANI/Fe3O4/CPE) was employed for determination of xanthine based on amperometric detection of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) reduction at -0.35V (vs. Ag/AgCl). The biosensor exhibited a fast response time to xanthine within 8s and a linear working concentration range from 0.2 to 36.0μM (R(2)=0.997) with a detection limit of 0.1μM (signal/noise [S/N]=3). The sensitivity of the biosensor was 13.58μAμM(-1)cm(-2). The apparent Michaelis-Menten (Km) value for xanthine was found to be 4.7μM. The fabricated biosensor was successfully applied for measurement of fish and chicken meat freshness, which was in agreement with the standard method at the 95% confidence level.

Abstract
Active and intelligent packaging systems are continuously evolving in response to growing challenges from a modern society. This article reviews: (1) the different categories of active and intelligent packaging concepts and currently available commercial applications, (2) latest packaging research trends and innovations, and (3) the growth perspectives of the active and intelligent packaging market. Active packaging aiming at extending shelf life or improving safety while maintaining quality is progressing towards the incorporation of natural active agents into more sustainable packaging materials. Intelligent packaging systems which monitor the condition of the packed food or its environment are progressing towards more cost-effective, convenient and integrated systems to provide innovative packaging solutions. Market growth is expected for active packaging with leading shares for moisture absorbers, oxygen scavengers, microwave susceptors and antimicrobial packaging. The market for intelligent packaging is also promising with strong gains for time-temperature indicator labels and advancements in the integration of intelligent concepts into packaging materials.
