Abstract
Eustrongylides excisus is a fish-borne zoonotic parasite known to infect various fish species, including Northern pike (Esox Lucius). This nematode, belonging to the family Dioctophymatidae, has a complex life cycle involving multiple hosts. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence of Eustrongylides nematodes in Northern pike (E. Lucius) collected from Mijran Dam (Ramsar, Iran). Between June and October 2023, an investigation was conducted on Northern pike from Mijran Dam in Ramsar, Iran, following reports of reddish parasites in their muscle tissues. Sixty fish were examined at the University of Tehran, revealing live parasites in the muscles, which were then analyzed microscopically and preserved for a multidisciplinary study. The skeletal muscle tissues of 85% (51/60) of fish specimens were infected by grossly visible larvae which were microscopically identified as Eustrongylides spp. In histopathological examination, the lesion was composed of encapsulated parasitic granulomatous myositis. Microscopically, the cystic parasitic granulomas compressed the adjacent muscle fibers, leading to their atrophy and Zenker's necrosis. Moreover, epithelioid macrophages, giant cells and mononuclear inflammatory cells were present around the larvae and between the muscle fibers. Finally, a molecular analysis by examining the ITS gene region, revealed that they belong to the species E. excisus. Eustrongylidiasis in northern Iran necessitates further research into the biology, epidemiology, and control of Eustrongylides nematodes, focusing on various hosts. This study is the first to comprehensively characterize E. excisus in Northern pike in Ramsar, Iran, raising concerns about possible zoonotic transmission.

Abstract
Adenocephalus pacificus is a tapeworm parasitic of marine mammals and the main agent of human diphylobothriosis caused by consumption of raw or undercooked marine fishes, being considered as a reemerging disease. Despite having a broad distribution in marine mammals in both hemispheres, plerocercoid larvae in fish have only been reported in the Pacific Ocean, in Peruvian waters, from where most human cases are known. In Argentine waters larval stages of Diphyllobothriidae have been recorded in Merluccius hubbsi, a main fish resource mostly exported frozen, headed and gutted (H&G) or as fillets; therefore, the possible presence of A. pacificus in edible products, and the extent of the risk of parasitism for humans becomes of health and commercial relevance. With the aim of detecting and identifying potentially zoonotic diphyllobothriids and quantifying infection levels in viscera and fillets of hakes, 43 entire fish, 471 H&G, and 942 fillets obtained from research cruises in 2019 and 2021 from the southern Argentine Sea (44-53°S; 63-68°W) were examined by transillumination and under stereoscopic microscopy. Plerocercoids were recovered at low prevalence and mean abundance in entire fish (13.95 % and 0.35) and H&G fish (2.76 % and 0.03) but no larval worms were found adhered to musculature or peritoneum, furthermore, no larvae were found in the fillets. Larvae were genetically identified, based on sequences of the large subunit ribosomal RNA nuclear gene (lsrDNA) and the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) mitochondrial gene, as members of A. pacificus, representing the first report of this species in a fish host outside South American Pacific coasts. No spatial nor bathymetric patterns in parasite burdens were observed across sampling sites, but prevalence increased with fish size. The recorded low parasite burdens, the absence of infective stages in fillets and the fact that most products are commercialized deeply frozen, diminish the risk of parasitism for consumers to a minimum. However, the identification of this zoonotic agent and the assessment of its distribution in fish products are a first indispensable step for the design of efficient and suitable measures, such as freezing or cooking meet, to ensure the prevention of human infections.

Abstract
In this paper, we analyzed the diversity and structure of helminth communities of 12 common fish species from the coastal zone of Crimea. A total of 53 helminth species were found. The total number of parasite species per host fish ranged from 3 to 18. Species richness at the infracommunity and component community levels were from 1.4-4.2 to 1.7-7, respectively. The Brillouin index for the infracommunites was 0.1-1, while the Shannon index for the component communities was 0.3-1.2. Component communities demonstrated a bi- or tri-modal distribution of the parasite prevalence and positive correlations between the prevalence and log-transformed abundance indices, thus following the "core-satellite" conception. Overall, the prevalence and abundance index of the dominant parasite in the component communities ranged from 18 to 80% and from 0.6 to 61.5 ind. per fish, respectively. The structure of the helminth component communities demonstrated good accordance with the nestedness mode where the rarest species occurred in the most diverse infracommunities, while the poorest infracommunities were composed of a few dominating species. More than two-thirds of the studied helminth species had an aggregated distribution indicating well-structured and developed communities. Our data provide a basis for further research and may be used for fish resource monitoring and management.

Abstract
In Australia, nematodes belonging to the genus Eustrongylides were believed to be endemic species until the late 20th century when they were all considered to be E. excisus, invalid or inquirendae. Although these nematodes have frequently been reported in Australian fish, reptiles, and birds and cause disease or mortality among them, there has been no attempt to date to characterise them genetically. Globally, also, no one has validated or defined suitable genetic markers to distinguish between species of Eustrongylides. In this study, adult Eustrongylides from little black cormorant (Phalacrocorax sulcirostris; n = 3) and larvae from mountain galaxias (Galaxias olidus, n = 2) and a Murray cod (Maccullochella peelii, n = 1), and a Murray cod-trout cod hybrids (Maccullochella peelii x Maccullochella macquariensis, n = 1) were available for morphological examination and molecular characterisation. The adult nematodes from cormorants were identified as E. excisus. Sequences of the 18S and ITS regions were then obtained for all nematodes, which were identical among all specimens (larvae and adults) and also identical to those of E. excisus available in the GenBank. However, only one base pair difference exists between the 18S sequences of E. excisus and E. ignotus, with limited sequences available in GenBank accompanied with proper morphological data for the nematodes. With that limitation in mind, identifying our specimens as E. excisus suggests spill-over - that it is an introduced parasite species that has successfully established its life cycle among Australian native species - may have occurred. Our study is the first report of E. excisus in the little black cormorant, P. sulcirostris. Our results do not exclude the possibility of the occurrence of other species of Eustrongylides, either native or exotic, in Australia. This parasite is zoonotic and with increasing demand for fish and changing dietary preferences, such as the consumption of raw or undercooked fish, its occurrence in the flesh of the fish is concerning. This parasite is also associated with anthropogenic habitat alteration affecting the reproductive success of the infected hosts. Therefore, awareness among the relevant authorities of the presence of the parasite in Australia and its adverse impact on native animals is crucial for the success of conservation plans such as fish recovery and relocation efforts.

Abstract
A total of 72 specimens of Babka gymnotrachelus (Kessler, 1857), Neogobius fluviatilis (Pallas, 1814), and Neogobius melanostomus (Pallas, 1814) from four sampling sites along the Bulgarian section of the Danube River (Kudelin, Novo selo, Koshava, and Kutovo), Northwestern Bulgaria were submitted to ecologohelminthological investigation. During the examination 6 species of helminths have been identified from 3 classes: Trematoda (Nicolla skrjabini (Iwanitzky, 1928) Dollfus, 1960), Acanthocephala (Acanthocephalus anguillae (Müller, 1780) Lühe, 1911; Acanthocephalus lucii (Müller, 1776) Lühe, 1911; Pomphorhynchus laevis (Zoega in Müller, 1776) Porta, 1908) and Nematoda (Contracaecum sp., Eustrongylides excisus Jägerskiöld, 1909). Ecological indices of the established endohelminth species were tracked. The four sampling sites from the Danube River are new habitats for the discovered endohelminth species of racer goby, monkey goby, and round goby. The three goby species are new host records: B. gymnotrachelus and N. fluviatilis for Ac. lucii; N. melanostomus for Ac. lucii, Ac. anguillae and Contracaecum sp. New species of helminths are found in the helminth fauna of the three studied species of gobies from the Danube River and the river basin (Ac. lucii of N. fluviatilis) and in Bulgaria (Ac. lucii of B. gymnotrachelus; Ac. lucii, Ac. anguillae and Contracaecum sp. of N. melanostomus). The pathogenic species helminths for the fish and humans are found.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fish is a great nutritious food and provides quality protein and a variety of vitamins and minerals. This contributes significantly to the economy and food security in Iran. However, there are safety concerns related to the presence of zoonotic parasites. OBJECTIVES The objective of this study is, therefore, to review fish-borne zoonotic parasites in Iran. METHODS Keywords such as fish-borne, parasites, zoonotic, Iran, and some names of fish-borne zoonotic parasites were searched in databases including PubMed, Science Direct, Elsevier, SID, Magiran, Irandoc, Google Scholar and the World Health Organization. RESULTS The most common fish-borne parasites with zoonotic potential identified in reports in the literature were the protozoa Balantidium spp., Myxobolus spp. and Sarcosystis sp.; the trematodes Heterophyes heterophyes and Clinostomum complanatum; the cestodes Ligula intestinalis and Diphyllobothrium latum; the nematodes Pseudoterranova sp., Anisakis spp., Contracaecum spp., Raphidascaris spp., Eustrongylides spp. and Capillaria sp.; and the acanthocephal Corynosoma spp. CONCLUSIONS The potential risk factors for the transmission of fish-borne zoonotic parasites to humans are consumption of raw or undercooked infected fish, contact with contaminated water and contact with infected fish. There is a need for epidemiological surveillance of fish for parasites with zoonotic potential and of occurrence of infections in humans to better understand the public health significance and design prevention programs.

Abstract
Eustrongylides spp. are the nematodes from the Dioctophymatidae family which are potentially dangerous for the mammal's heath. The first aim of the present research is to describe the biology, developmental characteristics and epizootology of the Eustrongylides spp. nematode. Eustrongylidosis is a parasitic disease commonly occurring in the countries with temperate continental, tropical and subtropical climate. The Eustrongylides spp. parasites are biohelmints with a complex life cycle. The development of the nematodes takes place in the aquatic environment and includes a vast range of intermediate, accidental and definitive hosts. It has also been reported in humans. The second aim of the research is to describe the clinical and pathomorphological changes in organs and tissues of the infected animals, and influence of biotic and abiotic factors on formation of the natural centers of spreading of eustrongylidosis; diagnostics of eustrongylidosis.

Abstract
Ten laboratory rats were experimentally invaded per os with the Eustrongylides excisus (Jäegerskiold, 1909) nematode larvae (L3–L4) received from Perca fluviatialis (Linnaeus, 1758), caught in the water area of the Dnipro-Buh Estuary, Ukraine. The aim of the experimental study was to measure the pathogenic effect of the given parasite on the mammals’ organisms by means of the histological analysis of the affected organs of the infected rats. The researched animals were divided into two groups. The experiment lasted 15 days; the second group was a control group. The histological analysis showed purulent-serous and purulent-fibrinous peritonitis, acute circulatory disorders in brain tissues (signs of hypoxic-ischemic lesions of the brainstem in the form of neuronal changes) and the heart (partial spasm of arteries and edema of interstitial myocardial tissue); pathological changes in the lungs (acute interstitial purulent pneumonia, acute focal emphysema of the lungs), liver (acute exudative hepatitis), kidneys (signs of shock reaction) and intestines (acute serous-purulent enteritis). Formation of non-specific granulomas was noticed, which contained the fragments of the parasitic larvae. The acute course of the purulent-serous and purulent-fibrinous inflammatory processes in the organs of the invaded rats was noticed; signs of systemic inflammatory response syndrome with pronounced distributive vascular leukocytosis in the studied organs.

Abstract
Eustrongylides spp. are nematodes from the Dioctophymatidae family, potentially dangerous for the health of mammals. The aim of this review is to describe the distribution of the Eustrongylides spp. nematode. Eustrongylidosis is a parasitic disease which is common in countries with a continental, tropical or subtropical climate. Eustrongylides are biohelminths with a complicated development cycle. The nematode development takes place in the aquatic environment and includes a wide range of intermediate, definitive, and accidental hosts. The purpose of this review is describe the distribution of Eustrongylides spp. nematodes in the global regions, describe the prevalence of infection in those regions, and identify intermediate, definitive, and accidental hosts. It was found that Eustrongylides spp. nematrodes are significantly widespread around the world. In part in North America the agent of eustrongylidosis is registered mostly among birds and fishes, but cases of humans being affected with the disease are noted as well. In South America the given disease was also registered among amphibians and reptiles. In Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania and countries of the Far East, the disease is registered mostly in fishes, rarely – in birds. The taxonomic identification showed that some nematode species were related to certain geographic areas. For example, Eustrongylides ignotus and Eu. tubifex were mostly registered in North America, while for Europe (including Ukraine), Near and Middle East, Eu. еxcisus is a dominant species. Analysis of scientific sources showed that continents with warmer climatic conditions (South America, Asia, etc.) are characterized with a wider range of fishes, birds and reptiles which can potentially serve as hosts for the Eustrongylides nematodes.

Abstract
Food safety issues associated with aquatic food products become more important with the increasing consumption and followed by its ongoing challenges. The objective of this paper is to review the food safety hazards and health risks related to aquatic food products for the Southeast Asian region. These hazards can be categorized as microplastics (MPs) hazard, biological hazards (pathogenic bacteria, biogenic amines, viruses, parasites), and chemical hazards (antimicrobial, formaldehyde, heavy metal). In different Southeast Asian countries, the potential health risks of aquatic food products brought by food hazards to consumers were at different intensity and classes. Among all these hazards, pathogenic bacteria, antimicrobials, and heavy metal were a particular concern in the Southeast Asian region. With environmental changes, evolving consumption patterns, and the globalization of trade, new food safety challenges are created, which put forward higher requirements on food technologies, food safety regulations, and international cooperation.

Abstract
It is undeniable that with the popularity of sushi and sashimi over the last decade the consumption of raw fish has extremely increased. Raw fish is very appreciated worldwide and has become a major component of human diet because of its fine taste and nutritional properties. Possible hazards concerning fish safety and quality are classified as biological and chemical hazards. They are contaminants that often accumulate in edible tissue of fish and transmit to humans via the food chain affecting the consumer's health. Although their concentration in fish and fishery products are found at non-alarming level of a daily basis period, they induce hazardous outcome on human health due to long and continuous consumption of raw fish. Regular sushi and sashimi eaters have to be aware of the contaminants found in the other components of their dish that often add up to acceptable residue limits found in fish. Hence, there is the urge for effective analytical methods to be developed as well as stricter regulations to be put in force between countries to monitor the safety and quality of fish for the interest of public health.

Abstract
The European perch Perca fluviatilis L. serves as a host of different endohelminths of Trematoda, Cestoda, Nematoda, and Acanthocephala. Its natural range covers freshwater basins throughout much of Europe, including the Danube. Since information about endohelminths of European perch from this international river basin has been rather sporadic, the parasitological examinations of 700 perch from the central region of the Danube river basin in Slovakia were performed in October 2017 and April 2018. The larval stages of Triaenophorus nodulosus (Cestoda) were found in cysts located in the perch liver and adults of Proteocephalus percae (Cestoda) were isolated from the intestine. The larval stages of Eustrongylides sp. (Nematoda) and metacercariae of Clinostomum complanatum (Trematoda), both potential causative agents of fish-borne zoonoses, were found in the musculature. Spatial and seasonal differences in the occurrence of currently detected helminths were discussed with data on biological and environmental conditions of particular sampling site.
