Cascade Mesophase Transitions of Multi-enzyme Responsive Polymeric Formulations

Studying how synthetic polymer assemblies respond to sequential enzymatic stimuli can uncover intricate interactions in biological systems. Using amidase- and esterase-responsive PEG-based diblock (DBA) and triblock amphiphiles (TBAs), we created two distinct formulations: amidase-responsive DBA with esterase-responsive TBA and vice versa. We studied their cascade responses to the two enzymes and the sequence of their introduction. These formulations underwent cascade mesophase transitions upon the addition of the DBA-degrading enzyme, transitioning from (i) coassembled micelles to (ii) triblock-based hydrogel, and ultimately to (iii) dissolved polymers when exposed to the TBA hydrolyzing enzyme. The specific pathway of the two mesophase transitions depended on the compositions of the formulations and the enzyme introduction sequence. The results highlight the potential for designing polymeric formulations with programmable multistep enzymatic responses, mimicking the complex behavior of biological macromolecules.

Synthesis of Thermoresponsive Chitosan-graft-Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) Hybrid Copolymer and Its Complexation with DNA

A hybrid synthetic-natural, thermoresponsive graft copolymer composed of poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) side chains, prepared via RAFT polymerization, and a chitosan (Chit) polysaccharide backbone, was synthesized via radical addition-fragmentation reactions using the "grafting to" technique, in aqueous solution. ATR-FTIR, TGA, polyelectrolyte titrations and 1H NMR spectroscopy were employed in order to validate the Chit-g-PNIPAM copolymer chemical structure. Additionally, 1H NMR spectra and back conductometric titration were utilized to quantify the content of grafted PNIPAM side chains. The resulting graft copolymer contains dual functionality, namely both pH responsive free amino groups, with electrostatic complexation/coordination properties, and thermoresponsive PNIPAM side chains. Particle size measurements via dynamic light scattering (DLS) were used to study the thermoresponsive behavior of the Chit-g-PNIPAM copolymer. Thermal properties examined by TGA showed that, by the grafting modification with PNIPAM, the Chit structure became more thermally stable. The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the copolymer solution was determined by DLS measurements at 25-45 °C. Furthermore, dynamic and electrophoretic light scattering measurements demonstrated that the Chit-g-PNIPAM thermoresponsive copolymer is suitable of binding DNA molecules and forms nanosized polyplexes at different amino to phosphate groups ratios, with potential application as gene delivery systems.

Temperature-Sensitive Materials for Oil and Gas Drilling Applications

With the vigorous development of the petroleum industry, improving the efficiency of oil and gas exploitation has become an important issue. Temperature-sensitive materials show great potential for application in the development and production of oil and gas fields due to their unique temperature-responsive properties. This paper reviews the application of temperature-sensitive materials in oil and gas drilling and introduces the characteristics of three types of temperature-sensitive materials: N-substituted acrylamide polymers, amphiphilic block copolymers, and peptides. Because these materials can change their physical state at specific temperatures, this paper discusses in detail the role of various temperature-sensitive materials as plugging agent, thickener, oil displacing agent, flocculant, and tackifier in oil and gas field operations, as well as the mechanism of action and performance of temperature-sensitive materials in practical oil and gas drilling operations. As we have not yet seen relevant similar literature, this paper aims to discuss the innovative application of temperature-sensitive materials in the oil and gas drilling process, and at the same time points out the problems in the current research and applications as well as future development directions. Through analysis and comparison, we provide an efficient and environmentally friendly materials selection option for the petroleum industry in order to promote the progress and sustainable development of oil and gas extraction processes.

Thermosensitive Triblock Copolymer for Slow-Release Lubricants under Ocular Conditions

The ocular environment is crucial for a biological lubrication system. An unstable condition of tear film may cause a series of ocular diseases due to serious friction, such as dry eye syndrome, which has drawn extensive attention nowadays. In this study, an in vitro biocompatible superlubricity system, containing thermogelling copolymers (PCGA-PEG-PCGA) and slow-release lubricant (PEG 300/Tween 80), was constructed. First, the sol-gel transition temperature and gel strength of PCGA-PEG-PCGA were adjusted based on the ocular environment by regulating the length of PCGA blocks. Furthermore, the copolymer hydrogel exhibited a reliable slow-release property within 10 days and showed low cytotoxicity. Then, the superlubricity (coefficient of friction of approximately 0.005) was achieved with its released PEG 300/Tween 80 aqueous solution at the sliding velocity range of 1-100 mm s-1 and pressure range of 10-22 kPa. However, the lubrication behaviors varied, while PEG 300 chains and Tween 80 micelles were demonstrated to form a multilayer and a single layer adsorption structure on the sliding surface, respectively. On the whole, the composite lubrication systems, especially the one composed of Tween 80, showed excellent tribological properties owing to the stable slow-release and full hydration effects under ocular conditions, which hold great potential for improving ocular lubrication and maintaining human visual health.

Review of the Perspectives and Study of Thermo-Responsive Polymer Gels and Applications in Oil-Based Drilling Fluids

Thermoresponsive polymer gels are a type of intelligent material that can react to changes in temperature. These materials possess excellent innovative properties and find use in various fields. This paper systematically analyzes the methods for testing and regulating phase transition temperatures of thermo-responsive polymer gels based on their response mechanism. The report thoroughly introduces the latest research on thermo-responsive polymer gels in oil and gas extraction, discussing their advantages and challenges across various environments. Additionally, it elucidates how the application limitations of high-temperature and high-salt conditions can be resolved through process optimization and material innovation, ultimately broadening the scope of application of thermo-responsive polymer gels in oil and gas extraction. The article discusses the technological development and potential applications of thermo-responsive polymer gels in oil-based drilling fluids. This analysis aims to offer researchers in the oil and gas industry detailed insights into future possibilities for thermo-responsive polymer gels and to provide helpful guidance for their practical use in oil-based drilling fluids.

"One-pot" preparation and adsorption performance of chitosan-based La3+/Y3+ dual-ion-imprinted thermosensitive hydrogel

Temperature-sensitive materials are increasingly of deep interest to researchers. Ion imprinting technology is widely used in the field of metal recovery. In order to solve the problem of rare earth metal recovery, we designed a temperature-sensitive dual-imprinted hydrogel adsorption product (CDIH) with chitosan as the matrix, N-isopropylacrylamide as a thermally responsive monomer, and La³⁺ and Y³⁺ as the co-templates. The reversible thermal sensitivity and ion-imprinted structure were determined by differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, Raman spectra, Thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray energy spectroscopy various characterizations and analyses. The simultaneous adsorption amount of CDIH for La³⁺ and Y³⁺ was 87.04 mg/g and 90.70 mg/g, respectively. The quasi-secondary kinetic model and Freundlich isotherms model well described the adsorption mechanism of CDIH. It's worthy to mention that CDIH could be well regenerated through washing with deionized water at 20 °C, with a desorption rate of 95.29 % for La³⁺ and 96.03 % for Y³⁺. And after 10 cycles of reuse, 70 % of the adsorption amount could be maintained, revealing excellent reusability. Furthermore, CDIH expressed better adsorption selectivity to La³⁺ and Y³⁺ than its non-imprinted counterparts in a solution containing six metal ions.

Polymeric surfactants as ideal substitutes for sustainable corrosion protection: A perspective on colloidal and interface properties

Surfactants are well known for their colloidal and corrosion inhibition potential (CIP) due to their strong propensity to interact with metallic surfaces. However, because of their small molecular size and the fact that they are only effective at relatively high concentrations, their application in aqueous phase corrosion inhibition is often restricted. Polymeric surfactants, a unique class of corrosion inhibitors, hold the potential to eradicate the challenges associated with using surfactants in corrosion inhibition. They strongly bond with the metallic surface and offer superior CIP because of their macromolecular polymeric structure and abundance of polar functional groups. In contrast to conventional polymeric corrosion inhibitors, the inclusion of polar functional groups also aids in their solubilization in the majority of popular industry-based electrolytes. Some of the major functional groups present in polymeric surfactants used in corrosion mitigation include O (ether), glycidyl (cyclic ether), -CONH2 (amide), -COOR (ester), -SO3H (sulfonic acid), -COOH (carboxyl), -NH2 (amino), - + NR3/- + NHR2/- + NH2R/- + NH3 (quaternary ammonium), -OH (hydroxyl), -CH2OH (hydroxymethyl), etc. The current viewpoint offers state-of-the-art information on polymer surfactants as newly developing ideal alternatives for conventional corrosion inhibitors. The industrial scale-up, colloidal, coordination, adsorption properties, and structural requirements of polymer surfactants have also been established based on the knowledge obtained from the literature. Finally, the challenges, drawbacks, and potential benefits of using polymer surfactants have also been discussed.

Synthesis and Characterization of Thermoresponsive Chitosan-graft-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) Copolymers

Thermoresponsive chitosan-graft-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (CS-g-PNIPAAm) copolymers of different composition were synthesized by free-radical polymerization of chitosan (CS) and N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) in aqueous solution using potassium persulfate (PPS) as an initiator. By changing the molar ratio of CS:NIPAAm from 1:0.25 to 1:10 graft copolymers with a CS backbone and different amounts of PNIPAM side chains were prepared. The chemical structure of the obtained CS-g-PNIPAAm copolymers was confirmed by FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopy. 1H NMR spectra were also used to calculate the content of attached PNIPAAm side chains. Moreover, the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior of synthesized copolymers was assessed by cloud point, differential scanning calorimetry and particle size measurements. The aqueous solutions of copolymers containing ≥12 molar percent of PNIPAAm side chains demonstrated LCST behavior with the phase separation at around 29.0-32.7 °C. The intensity of thermoresponsiveness depended on the composition of copolymers and increased with increasing content of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) moieties. The synthesized thermoresponsive chitosan-graft-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) copolymers could be potentially applied in drug delivery systems or tissue engineering.

Highly Sensitive Detection of Bacteria by Binder-Coupled Multifunctional Polymeric Dyes

Infectious diseases caused by pathogens are a health burden, but traditional pathogen identification methods are complex and time-consuming. In this work, we have developed well-defined, multifunctional copolymers with rhodamine B dye synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using fully oxygen-tolerant photoredox/copper dual catalysis. ATRP enabled the efficient synthesis of copolymers with multiple fluorescent dyes from a biotin-functionalized initiator. Biotinylated dye copolymers were conjugated to antibody (Ab) or cell-wall binding domain (CBD), resulting in a highly fluorescent polymeric dye-binder complex. We showed that the unique combination of multifunctional polymeric dyes and strain-specific Ab or CBD exhibited both enhanced fluorescence and target selectivity for bioimaging of Staphylococcus aureus by flow cytometry and confocal microscopy. The ATRP-derived polymeric dyes have the potential as biosensors for the detection of target DNA, protein, or bacteria, as well as bioimaging.

Boosting Organic Afterglow Performance via a Two-Component Design Strategy Extracted from Macromolecular Self-Assembly

Because intersystem crossing and phosphorescence decay are spin-forbidden in organic systems, it is challenging to obtain high-performance organic afterglow materials. Inspired by two-component design strategy from macromolecular self-assembly, here we report the utilization of synthetic polymers to control the excited state properties of difluoroboron β-diketonate (BF₂bdk) and deuterated BF₂bdk compounds for the fabrication of room-temperature organic afterglow materials. The polymer component can interact with BF₂bdk excited states by dipole-dipole interactions, lower BF₂bdk S₁ levels with insignificant effect on T₁ levels, reduce ΔE_ST, and thus enhance intersystem crossing of BF₂bdk excited states. The polymer component can also suppress intramolecular motion of BF₂bdk triplets and protect BF₂bdk triplets from oxygen quenching. The obtained BF₂bdk-polymer afterglow materials exhibit emission lifetimes up to 2.2 s and high photoluminescence quantum yields under ambient conditions, display excellent processability and flexibility, and can function as efficient donors for excited state energy transfer to construct red afterglow materials.

Finally, the current challenges facing the field are discussed and promising new areas of research are highlighted to inspire the community to pursue new directions.

What Did We Learn From Current Progress in Heat Stress Tolerance in Plants? Can Microbes Be a Solution?

Temperature is a significant parameter in agriculture since it controls seed germination and plant growth. Global warming has resulted in an irregular rise in temperature posing a serious threat to the agricultural production around the world. A slight increase in temperature acts as stress and exert an overall negative impact on different developmental stages including plant phenology, development, cellular activities, gene expression, anatomical features, the functional and structural orientation of leaves, twigs, roots, and shoots. These impacts ultimately decrease the biomass, affect reproductive process, decrease flowering and fruiting and significant yield losses. Plants have inherent mechanisms to cope with different stressors including heat which may vary depending upon the type of plant species, duration and degree of the heat stress. Plants initially adapt avoidance and then tolerance strategies to combat heat stress. The tolerance pathway involves ion transporter, osmoprotectants, antioxidants, heat shock protein which help the plants to survive under heat stress. To develop heat-tolerant plants using above-mentioned strategies requires a lot of time, expertise, and resources. On contrary, plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs) is a cost-effective, time-saving, and user-friendly approach to support and enhance agricultural production under a range of environmental conditions including stresses. PGPR produce and regulate various phytohormones, enzymes, and metabolites that help plant to maintain growth under heat stress. They form biofilm, decrease abscisic acid, stimulate root development, enhance heat shock proteins, deamination of ACC enzyme, and nutrient availability especially nitrogen and phosphorous. Despite extensive work done on plant heat stress tolerance in general, very few comprehensive reviews are available on the subject especially the role of microbes for plant heat tolerance. This article reviews the current studies on the retaliation, adaptation, and tolerance to heat stress at the cellular, organellar, and whole plant levels, explains different approaches, and sheds light on how microbes can help to induce heat stress tolerance in plants.

Updated Perceptions on Polymer-Based Enhanced Oil Recovery Toward High-Temperature High-Salinity Tolerance for Successful Field Applications in Carbonate Reservoirs

The aging of the existing reservoirs makes the hydrocarbon extraction shift toward newer reserves, and harsh conditioned carbonates, which possess high temperature and high salinity (HTHS). Conventional polymer-flooding fails in these HTHS carbonates, due to precipitation, viscosity loss, and polymer adsorption. Therefore, to counteract these challenges, novel polymer-based cEOR alternatives employ optimized polymers, polymer–surfactant, and alkali–surfactant–polymer solutions along with hybrid methods, which have shown a potential to target the residual or remaining oils in carbonates. Consequently, we investigate novel polymers, viz., ATBS, Scleroglucan, NVP-based polymers, and hydrophobic associative polymers, along with bio-polymers. These selected polymers have shown low shear sensitivity, low adsorption, and robust thermal/salinity tolerance. Additionally, adding an alkali-surfactant to polymer solution produces a synergy effect of improved mobility control, wettability alteration, and interfacial-tension reduction. Thus, enhancing the displacement and sweep efficiencies. Moreover, low-salinity water can precondition high-salinity reservoirs before polymer flooding (hybrid method), to decrease polymer adsorption and viscosity loss. Thus, this paper is a reference for novel polymers, and their hybrid techniques, to improve polymer-based cEOR field applications under HTHS conditions in carbonates. Additionally, the recommendations can assist in project designs with reasonable costs and minimal environmental impact. The implication of this work will aid in supplementing the oil and gas energy sector growth, making a positive contribution to the Middle Eastern economy.

Thermoresponsive Self-Assembly of Twofold Fluorescently Labeled Block Copolymers in Aqueous Solution and Microemulsions

A nonionic double hydrophilic block copolymer with a long permanently hydrophilic and a small thermoresponsive block is synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer polymerization (RAFT). By employing a specifically designed chain-transfer agent, the polymer is functionalized with complementary end groups which are suited for Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET). The end group attached to the permanently hydrophilic block of poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) pDMAm is designed as a permanently hydrophobic segment ("sticker") comprising a long alkyl chain and the 4-aminonaphthalimide fluorophore. The other end attached to the thermoresponsive block of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) pNiPAm incorporates a coumarin fluorophore. The temperature-dependent self-assembly of the twofold fluorescently labeled copolymer is studied in pure aqueous solution as well as in an o/w microemulsion by several techniques including turbidimetry, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and fluorescence spectroscopy. It is compared to the behaviors of the analogous twofold-labeled pDMAm and pNiPAm homopolymer references. The findings indicate that the block copolymer behaves as a polymeric surfactant at low temperatures, with one relatively small hydrophobic end block and an extended hydrophilic chain forming "hairy micelles". At elevated temperatures above the LCST phase transition of the pNiPAm block, however, the copolymer behaves as an associative telechelic polymer with two nonsymmetrical hydrophobic end blocks, which do not mix. Thus, instead of a network of bridged "flower micelles", large dynamic aggregates are formed. These are connected alternatingly by the original micellar cores as well as by clusters of the collapsed pNiPAm blocks. This type of structure is even more favored in the o/w microemulsion than in pure aqueous solution, as the microemulsion droplets constitute an attractive anchoring point for the hydrophobic dodecyl sticker but not for the collapsed pNiPAm chains.

Smart Magnetic Nanocarriers for Multi-Stimuli On-Demand Drug Delivery

In this study, we report the realization of drug-loaded smart magnetic nanocarriers constituted by superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles encapsulated in a dual pH- and temperature-responsive poly (N-vinylcaprolactam-co-acrylic acid) copolymer to achieve highly controlled drug release and localized magnetic hyperthermia. The magnetic core was constituted by flower-like magnetite nanoparticles with a size of 16.4 nm prepared by the polyol approach, with good saturation magnetization and a high specific absorption rate. The core was encapsulated in poly (N-vinylcaprolactam-co-acrylic acid) obtaining magnetic nanocarriers that revealed reversible hydration/dehydration transition at the acidic condition and/or at temperatures above physiological body temperature, which can be triggered by magnetic hyperthermia. The efficacy of the system was proved by loading doxorubicin with very high encapsulation efficiency (>96.0%) at neutral pH. The double pH- and temperature-responsive nature of the magnetic nanocarriers facilitated a burst, almost complete release of the drug at acidic pH under hyperthermia conditions, while a negligible amount of doxorubicin was released at physiological body temperature at neutral pH, confirming that in addition to pH variation, drug release can be improved by hyperthermia treatment. These results suggest this multi-stimuli-sensitive nanoplatform is a promising candidate for remote-controlled drug release in combination with magnetic hyperthermia for cancer treatment.

Water-soluble copolymers and their hydrogels with pH-tunable diverse thermoresponsive behaviors enabled by hydrogen bonding

Water-soluble copolymers display both UCST and LCST thermosensitivity in aqueous solution due to pH-determined hydrogen bonding between comonomer units, and their hydrogels can be used for information recording and encryption/decryption.

Conformation, Self-Organization and Thermoresponsibility of Polymethacrylate Molecular Brushes with Oligo(ethylene glycol)-block-oligo(propylene glycol) Side Chains

Polymethacrylic molecular brushes with oligo(ethylene glycol)-block-oligo(propylene glycol) side chains were investigated by static and dynamic light scattering and viscometry. The solvents used were acetonitrile, tetrahydrofuran, chloroform, and water. The grafted copolymers were molecularly dispersed and dissolved in tetrahydrofuran and acetonitrile. In these solvents, the molar masses of copolymers were determined. In thermodynamically good solvents, namely tetrahydrofuran and acetonitrile, investigated copolymers have a high intramolecular density and the shape of their molecules resembles a star-shaped macromolecule. In chloroform and water, the micelle-like aggregates were formed. Critical micelle concentrations decreased with the lengthening of the hydrophobic block. Molecular brushes demonstrated thermosensitive behavior in aqueous solutions. The phase separation temperatures reduced with an increase in the content of the oligo(propylene glycol) block.

Features of Solution Behavior of Polymer Stars with Arms of Poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazolines Copolymers Grafted to the Upper Rim of Calix[8]arene

Star-shaped polymers with arms of block and gradient copolymers of 2-ethyl- and 2-isopropyl-2-oxazolines grafted to the upper rim of calix[8]arene were synthesized by the "grafting from" method. The ratio of 2-ethyl- and 2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline units was 1:1. Molar masses and hydrodynamic characteristics were measured using molecular hydrodynamics and optics methods in 2-nitropropane. The arms of the synthesized stars were short and the star-shaped macromolecules were characterized by compact dimensions and heightened intramolecular density. The influence of the arm structure on the conformation of star molecules was not observed. At low temperatures, the aqueous solutions of the studied stars were not molecular dispersed but individual molecules prevailed. One phase transition was detected for all solutions. The phase separation temperatures decreased with a growth of the content of more hydrophobic 2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline units. It was shown that the way of arms grafting to the calix[8]arene core affects the behavior of aqueous solutions of star-shaped poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazoline copolymers. In the case of upper rim functionalization, the shape of calix[8]arene resembles a plate. Accordingly, the core is less shielded from the solvent and the phase separation temperatures are lower than those for star-shaped poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazolines with lower rim functionalization of the calix[8]arene.

Synthesis, Thermoresponsive Behavior, and Catalytic Properties of Amphiphilic Diblock Copolymers of N-Vinylcaprolactam and N-Vinylimidazole

Abstract

Thermoresponsive diblock copolymers (DCs) were prepared by two-stage reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer/macromolecular design by interchange of xanthate (RAFT/MADIX) polymerization of N-vinylcaprolactam and N-vinylimidazole (VI). The poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) (PVCL) blocks were first synthesized and used as macro-chain transfer agent in VI polymerization. The temperature behavior of PVCL and DCs in aqueous media has been studied by static and dynamic light scattering. It has been shown that the phase separation temperature of both PVCLs and DCs depends on the length of the PVCL chain and the composition of aqueous solvent. The temperature range above the PVCL θ temperature and below the cloud point is characterized by the conformational rearrangements leading to the formation of mesoglobules. The study of catalytic activity of DCs in the hydrolysis reaction of p-nitrophenyl propionate has shown that their activity substantially increases in this transitional temperature region owing to the formation of highly developed hydrophilic–hydrophobic interfaces inside the mesoglobules.

Synergistic Stain Removal Achieved by Controlling the Fractions of Light and Thermo Responsive Components in the Dual-Responsive Copolymer Immobilized on Cotton Fabrics by Cross-Linker

Enhanced synergistic stain removal is realized by tailoring the comonomer fractions of a light- and thermo-dual responsive copolymer, which is immobilized on cotton fabrics by a cross-linker. The copolymer poly(acrylamide azobenzene-co-ethylene glycol methacrylate-co-triethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate), denoted P(AAAB₁-co-EGMA₂-co-MEO₃MA₁₇), is prepared by the ATRP polymerization method. The present molar ratio for these monomers is 1:2:17. Because of the existence of the light-responsive AAAB unit, the transition temperature of its aqueous solution under UV radiation is shifted to 39 °C, which is 2 °C higher than that in ambient conditions. This increase is caused by the trans-cis isomerization from the azobenzene groups, indicating an increased hydrophilicity of P(AAAB₁-co-EGMA₂-co-MEO₃MA₁₇) under UV radiation. After being immobilized onto cotton fabrics by a cross-linker, they are also dual-responsive. The equilibrium swelling ratio (ESR) of the cotton fabrics is further increased after UV radiation. Compared to our former investigation, the reduction of the AAAB molar fraction from 0.1 to 0.05 causes an increase of the ESR value by 10%. Moreover, the stain removal efficiency of the cotton fabrics immobilized with P(AAAB₁-co-EGMA₂-co-MEO₃MA₁₇) by cross-linker is also significantly improved under UV radiation. The hydrophilicity of the copolymer mainly from the MEO₃MA units is crucial to the cleaning capability. Additionally lowering the attachment between stain and the copolymer coating on the cotton fabrics by trans-cis isomerization in those AAAB units also favors the cleaning. Hence, the stain removal is strongly improved by optimizing the fraction of light- versus thermo-responsive components in the copolymer, which can profoundly reduce the consumption of chemical detergents and energy during laundry.

Multi-stimuli-responsive aggregation of nanoparticles driven by the manipulation of colloidal stability

The capacity to control the dispersed or aggregated state of colloidal particles is particularly attractive for facilitating a diverse range of smart applications. For this reason, stimuli-responsive nanoparticles have garnered much attention in recent years. Colloidal systems that exhibit multi-stimuli-responsive behaviour are particularly interesting materials due to the greater spatial and temporal control they display in terms of dispersion/aggregation status; such behaviour can be exploited for implant formation, easy separation of a previously dispersed material or for the blocking of unwanted pores. This review will provide an overview of the recent publications regarding multi-stimuli-responsive microgels and hybrid core-shell nanoparticles. These polymer-based nanoparticles are highly sensitive to environmental conditions and can form aggregated clusters due to a loss of colloidal stability, triggered by temperature, pH and ionic strength stimuli. We aim to provide the reader with a discussion of the recent developments in this area, as well as an understanding of the fundamental concepts which underpin the responsive behaviour, and an exploration of their applications.

Self-Organization in Dilute Aqueous Solutions of Thermoresponsive Star-Shaped Six-Arm Poly-2-Alkyl-2-Oxazines and Poly-2-Alkyl-2-Oxazolines

The behavior of star-shaped six-arm poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazines and poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazolines in aqueous solutions on heating was studied by light scattering, turbidimetry and microcalorimetry. The core of stars was hexaaza [2₆] orthoparacyclophane and the arms were poly-2-ethyl-2-oxazine, poly-2-isopropyl-2-oxazine, poly-2-ethyl-2-oxazoline, and poly-2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline. The arm structure affects the properties of polymers already at low temperatures. Molecules and aggregates were present in solutions of poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazines, while aggregates of two types were observed in the case of poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazolines. On heating below the phase separation temperature, the characteristics of the investigated solutions did not depend practically on temperature. An increase in the dehydration degree of poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazines and poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazolines led to the formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonds, and aggregation was the dominant process near the phase separation temperature. It was shown that the characteristics of the phase transition in solutions of the studied polymer stars are determined primarily by the arm structure, while the influence of the molar mass is not so significant. In comparison with literature data, the role of the hydrophobic core structure in the formation of the properties of star-shaped polymers was analyzed.

Influence of Salt on the Self-Organization in Solutions of Star-Shaped Poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazoline and Poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazine on Heating

The water-salt solutions of star-shaped six-arm poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazines and poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazolines were studied by light scattering and turbidimetry. The core was hexaaza[26]orthoparacyclophane and the arms were poly-2-ethyl-2-oxazine, poly-2-isopropyl-2-oxazine, poly-2-ethyl-2-oxazoline, and poly-2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline. NaCl and N-methylpyridinium p-toluenesulfonate were used as salts. Their concentration varied from 0-0.154 M. On heating, a phase transition was observed in all studied solutions. It was found that the effect of salt on the thermosensitivity of the investigated stars depends on the structure of the salt and polymer and on the salt content in the solution. The phase separation temperature decreased with an increase in the hydrophobicity of the polymers, which is caused by both a growth of the side radical size and an elongation of the monomer unit. For NaCl solutions, the phase separation temperature monotonically decreased with growth of salt concentration. In solutions with methylpyridinium p-toluenesulfonate, the dependence of the phase separation temperature on the salt concentration was non-monotonic with minimum at salt concentration corresponding to one salt molecule per one arm of a polymer star. Poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazine and poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazoline stars with a hexaaza[26]orthoparacyclophane core are more sensitive to the presence of salt in solution than the similar stars with a calix[n]arene branching center.

Abnormal fast dehydration and rehydration of light- and thermo-dual-responsive copolymer films triggered by UV radiation

Abnormal fast dehydration and rehydration of light- and thermo-dual-responsive copolymer films of poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate-co-6-(4-phenylazophenoxy)hexyl acrylate), abbreviated as P(OEGMA300-co-PAHA), are triggered by UV radiation. Both rapid kinetic processes are probed by in situ neutron reflectivity (NR). The transition temperatures (TTs) of P(OEGMA300-co-PAHA) are 53.0 (ambient conditions) and 52.5 °C (UV radiation, λ = 365 nm). Thin P(OEGMA300-co-PAHA) films show a random distribution of OEGMA300 and PAHA segments. They swell in a D2O vapor atmosphere at 23 °C (below TT) to a swelling ratio d/das-prep of 1.61 ± 0.01 and exhibit a D2O volume fraction φ(D2O) of 39.3 ± 0.5%. After being exposed to UV radiation for only 60 s, d/das-prep and φ(D2O) significantly decrease to 1.00 ± 0.01 and 13.4 ± 0.5%, respectively. Although the UV-induced trans-cis isomerization of the azobenzene in PAHA induces increased hydrophilicity, the configuration change causes a breaking of the intermolecular hydrogen bonds between OEGMA300 and D2O molecules and unexpected film shrinkage. As compared to thermal stimulus-induced dehydration, the present dehydration rate is 100 times faster. Removal of the UV radiation causes immediate rehydration. After 200 s, d/das-prep and φ(D2O) recover to their hydrated states, which is also 30 times faster than the initial hydration. At 60 °C (above TT), thin P(OEGMA300-co-PAHA) films switch to their collapsed state and are insensitive to UV radiation. Thus, the UV-induced fast dehydration and rehydration depend on the existence of hydrogen bonds.

Effects of Hydrophobic Modifications on the Solution Self-Assembly of P(DMAEMA-co-QDMAEMA)-b-POEGMA Random Diblock Copolymers

In this work, the synthesis and the aqueous solution self-assembly behavior of novel partially hydrophobically modified poly(2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate)-b-poly(oligo(ethylelene glycol) methyl ether methacrylatetabel) pH and temperature responsive random diblock copolymers (P(DMAEMA-co-Q_6/12DMAEMA)-b-POEGMA), are reported. The chemical modifications were accomplished via quaternization with 1-iodohexane (Q₆) and 1-iodododecane (Q₁₂) and confirmed by ¹H-NMR spectroscopy. The successful synthesis of PDMAEMA-b-POEGMA precursor block copolymers was conducted by RAFT polymerization. The partial chemical modification of the diblocks resulted in the permanent attachment of long alkyl chains on the amine groups of the PDMAEMA block and the presence of tertiary and quaternary amines randomly distributed within the PDMAEMA block. Light scattering techniques confirmed that the increased hydrophobic character results in the formation of nanoaggregates of high mass and tunable pH and temperature response. The characteristics of the aggregates are also affected by the aqueous solution preparation protocol, the nature of the quaternizing agent and the quaternization degree. The incorporation of long alkyl chains allowed the encapsulation of indomethacin within the amphiphilic diblock copolymer aggregates. Nanostructures of increased size were detected due to the encapsulation of indomethacin into the interior of the hydrophobic domains. Drug release studies demonstrated that almost 50% of the encapsulated drug can be released on demand by aid of ultrasonication.

Theoretical and Experimental Design of Heavy Metal-Mopping Magnetic Nanoparticles

Herein, we show a comprehensive experimental, theoretical, and computational study aimed at designing macromolecules able to adsorb a cargo at the nanoscale. Specifically, we focus on the adsorption properties of star diblock copolymers, i.e., macromolecules made by a number f of H-T diblock copolymer arms tethered on a central core; the H monomeric heads, which are closer to the tethering point, are attractive toward a specific target, while the T monomeric tails are neutral to the cargo. Experimentally, we exploited the adaptability of poly(2-oxazoline)s (POxs) to realize block copolymer-coated nanoparticles with a proper functionalization able to interact with heavy metals and show or exhibit a thermoresponsive behavior in aqueous solution. We here present the synthesis and analysis of the properties of a high molecular mass block copolymer featured by (i) a polar side chain, capable of exploiting electrostatic and hydrophilic interaction with a predetermined cargo, and (ii) a thermoresponsive scaffold, able to change the interaction with the media by tuning the temperature. Afterward, the obtained polymers were grafted onto iron oxide nanoparticles and the thermoresponsive properties were investigated. Through isothermal titration calorimetry, we then analyzed the adsorption properties of the synthesized superparamagnetic nanoparticles for heavy metal ions in aqueous solution. Additionally, we use a combination of scaling theories and simulations to link equilibrium properties of the system to a prediction of the loading properties as a function of size ratio and effective interactions between the considered species. The comparison between experimental results on adsorption and theoretical prediction validates the whole design process.

Entropy Rules: Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Model Oligomers for Thermoresponsive Polymers

We attempted to attain atomic-scale insights into the mechanism of the heat-induced phase transition of two thermoresponsive polymers containing amide groups, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and poly(2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline) (PIPOZ), and we succeeded in reproducing the existence of lower critical solution temperature (LCST). The simulation data are in accord with experimental findings. We found out that the entropy has an important contribution to the thermodynamics of the phase separation transition. Moreover, after decomposing further the entropy change to contributions from the solutes and from the solvent, it appeared out that the entropy of the solvent has the decisive share for the lowering of the free energy of the system when increasing the temperature above the LCST. Our conclusion is that the thermoresponsive behavior is driven by the entropy of the solvent. The water molecules structured around the functional groups of the polymer that are exposed to contact with the solvent in the extended conformation lower the enthalpy of the system, but at certain temperature the extended conformation of the polymer collapses as a result of dominating entropy gain from “released” water molecules. We stress also on the importance of using more than one reference molecule in the simulation box at the setup of the simulation.

Tunable LCST/UCST-Type Polypeptoids and Their Structure-Property Relationship

Bioinspired thermoresponsive polymeric materials with tunable phase-transition behaviors are highly desirable for biomedical applications. Here, we reported a facile approach for the synthesis of both lower critical solution temperature (LCST) and upper critical solution temperature (UCST) types of thermoresponsive polypeptoids with tunable phase-transition temperature in the range of 29--55 °C. The introduction of alkyl groups and ethylene glycol (EG) units results in a controlled phase-transition behavior under fairly mild conditions. A very sharp transition (ΔT ≤ 1.5 °C) is observed by simply adjusting pH and the alkyl chain length. In particular, the carboxyl-containing polypeptoids display designable UCST behavior, which can be finely tuned in both water and methanol. All these features make the obtained polymers beneficial for practical applications. More interestingly, we demonstrate that the hydrophilic EG group behaves as an excellent regulator to tune the UCST behavior, while the hydrophobic alkyl residues show remarkable capability to regulate the LCST behavior of the system. We hope that such systematic structure-property studies will enable the design of smart polymer materials to meet the specific needs of future applications.
