Abstract
Traditional polybenzoxazine thermosets cannot be reprocessed or recycled due to the permanent crosslinked networks. The dynamic exchangeable characteristics of imine bonds can impart the networks with reprocessabilities and recyclabilities. This study reported a weldable, reprocessable, and water-resistant polybenzoxazine vitrimer (C-ABZ) crosslinked by dynamic imine bonds. It was synthesized through a condensation reaction between an aldehyde-containing benzoxazine oligomer (O-ABZ) and 1,12-dodecanediamine. The resulting C-ABZ was able to be welded and reprocessed due to the dynamic exchange of imine bonds. The tensile strengths of the welded C-ABZ and the reprocessed C-ABZ after three cycles of hot-pressing were 76.7, 81.3, 70.8, and 58.1 Mpa, with corresponding tensile strength recovery ratios of 74.1 %, 78.6 %, 68.4 %, and 56.1 %, respectively. Furthermore, the polybenzoxazine backbone significantly improved the water resistance of the imine bonds. After immersing in water for 30 days at room temperature, the weight gain of C-ABZ was less than 1 % with corresponding tensile strength and tensile strength retention ratio of 59.5 Mpa and 57.5 %, respectively. Although the heat resistance of C-ABZ decreased slightly with increased hot-pressing cycles, a glass transition temperature (Tg, tanδ) of 150 °C was retained after the third hot-pressing. Overall, these findings demonstrate that the C-ABZ possesses excellent comprehensive performances.

Abstract
A novel polycyclic naphthoxazine resin (NSA-thiq) is synthesized via N, O-acetal forming reaction between o-hydroxyl naphthaldehyde and 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline. The chemical structure of the monomer is investigated and confirmed by 1H and 13C NMR, Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and high-resolution mass spectrometry. Besides, the ring-opening polymerization behavior similar to ordinary benzoxazine resins is observed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and in situ FT-IR analyses, leading to the formation of the phenolic cross-linked network. Notably, DSC thermograms indicate that the newly obtained polycyclic naphthoxazine resin exhibits much lower polymerization temperatures compared to many other reported benzoxazine or naphthoxazine resins. Moreover, the corresponding polybenzoxazine (poly(NSA-thiq)) shows comparable thermal stability in comparison with thermosets derived from monobenzoxazine resins. As a consequence of these unique performances, NSA-thiq is applied as a property modifier for a commercialized benzoxazine resin (BA-a). The glass transition temperature of copolymeric thermosets is enhanced without sacrificing too much thermal stability and heat resistance. Here, another series of naphthoxazine thermosetting resin is explored, which can provide more examples for constructing composites based on thermoset polymers.

Abstract
In this study, a heat-resistant adhesive was prepared using molybdenum-phenolic (Mo-PF) resin as the matrix and TiB2 particle as the ceramizable filler for bonding Al2O3 ceramic substrates. Firstly, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) was used to characterize the chemical structure of the Mo-PF. Subsequently, thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) and shear strength testing were employed to investigate the effects of heat treatment in different atmospheres on the thermal stability and residual bonding properties of the adhesive. To further explore the bonding mechanism of the adhesive after heat treatment in different atmospheres, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), compressive strength testing, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were utilized to analyze the microstructure, mechanical strength, and composition evolution of the adhesive at different temperatures. The bonding strength of Al2O3 joints showed a trend of initially decreasing and then increasing after different temperature heat treatment in air, with the shear strength reaching a maximum value of 25.68 MPa after treatment at 1200 °C. And the bonding strength of Al2O3 joints decreased slowly with the increase of temperature in nitrogen. In air, the ceramicization reaction at a high temperature enabled the mechanical strength of the adhesive to rise despite the continuous pyrolysis of the resin. However, the TiB2 filler in nitrogen did not react, and the properties of the adhesive showed a decreasing tendency with the pyrolysis of the resin.

Abstract
In this work, a novel bio-based high-performance bisbenzoxazine resin was synthesized from daidzein, 2-thiophenemethylamine and paraformaldehyde. The chemical structure was confirmed using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The polymerization process was systematically studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and in situ FT-IR spectra. It can be polymerized through multiple polymerization behaviors under the synergistic reaction of thiophene rings with benzopyrone rather than a single polymerization mechanism of traditional benzoxazines, as reported. In addition, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and a microscale combustion calorimeter (MCC) were used to study the thermal stability and flame retardancy of the resulting polybenzoxazine. The thermosetting material showed a high carbon residue rate of 62.8% and a low heat release capacity (HRC) value of 33 J/gK without adding any flame retardants. Based on its outstanding capability of carbon formation, this newly obtained benzoxazine resin was carbonized and activated to obtain a porous carbon material doped with both sulfur and nitrogen. The CO2 absorption of the carbon material at 0 °C and 25 °C at 1 bar was 3.64 mmol/g and 3.26 mmol/g, respectively. The above excellent comprehensive properties prove its potential applications in many advanced fields.

Abstract
There is an urgency to produce novel high-performance resins to support the rapid development of the aerospace field and the electronic industry. In the present work, we designed and consequently synthesized a benzoxazine monomer (oHPNI-fa) bearing both norbornene and furan groups through the flexible benzoxazine structural design capability. The molecular structure of oHPNI-fa was verified by the combination characterization of nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum, FT-IR technology, and high-resolution mass spectrum. The thermally activated terpolymerization was monitored by in situ FT-IR as well as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Moreover, the low-temperature-curing characteristics of oHPNI-fa have also been revealed and discussed in the current study. Furthermore, the curing kinetics of the oHPNI-fa were investigated by the Kissinger and Ozawa methods. The resulting highly cross-linked thermoset based on oHPNI-fa showed excellent thermal stability as well as flame retardancy (Td10 of 425 °C, THR of 4.9 KJg-1). The strategy for molecular design utilized in the current work gives a guide to the development of high-performance resins which can potentially be applied in the aerospace and electronics industries.

Abstract
AbstractIn the current study, a hydroxylated chalcone (1-phenyl)-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)prop-2-en-1-one, 4-aminobenzoic acid, and paraformaldehyde were combined in ethanol/toluene solvent to form a new benzoxazine monomer. 1H NMR and FTIR analysis were used to confirm the produced monomer. Polybenzoxazine was prepared by the thermal curing of chalcone-based benzoxazine monomer and examined using FTIR and XRD. Magnetite nanoparticles were prepared using two different solvents and mixed with benzoxazine monomer at various ratios, followed by insitu thermal curing to prepare polybenzoxazine/magnetite nanocomposites. These nanocomposites were analyzed by FTIR, XRD, DSC and TGA were used to examine the thermal characteristics of the resulted materials. The surface morphology was investigated using SEM, and the magnetic property was measured by VSM. The resulting benzoxazine monomer has a low curing temperature (160 °C). The addition of nanoparticles of magnetite to benzoxazine improved its thermal stability. Also, the inclusion procedure of magnetite into benzoxazine has a significant impact on its saturation magnetization.

Abstract
This study analyzed the fabrication and characterization of polybenzoxazine/polydopamine/ceria as tertiary nanocomposites. To this end, a new benzoxazine monomer (MBZ) was fabricated based on the well-known Mannich reaction of naphthalene-1-amine, 2-tert-butylbenzene-1,4-diol and formaldehyde under ultrasonic-assisted process. Polydopamine (PDA) was used as dispersing polymer nanoparticles and surface modifier for CeO2 by in-situ polymerization of dopamine with the assistance of ultrasonic waves. Then, nanocomposites (NC)s were manufactured by in-situ route under thermal conditions. The FT-IR and 1H-NMR spectra confirmed the preparation of the designed MBZ monomer. The FE-SEM and TEM results showed the morphological aspects of prepared NCs and illustrated the distribution of CeO2 NPs in the polymer matrix. The XRD patterns of NCs showed the presence of crystalline phases of nanoscale CeO2 in an amorphous matrix. The TGA results reveal that the prepared NCs are classified as thermally stable materials.

Abstract
Exploring the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) mechanism of benzoxazines is a fundamental issue in benzoxazine chemistry. Though some research papers on the topic have been reported, the ROP mechanism of mono-benzoxazines is still elusive. The key point for mechanistic studies is to determine and characterize the structure and formation pathways of the products generated in ROP. In this paper, the ROP of a vanillin-furfurylamine-based benzoxazine and a mono-azomethine derivative is studied with differential scanning calorimetry, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, respectively. The results show that the products consist of a range of cationic species, zwitterions, fragments, and series of cyclic and linear oligomers of varying molecular sizes. It is proposed that both mono-benzoxazines undergo thermally activated cationic ring-opening oligomerization via zwitterion intermediates. Upon thermal induction, multi-bond-cleavage takes place to form various zwitterionic intermediates, which react with a monomer, a fragment, or a second zwitterion by several pathways to generate cyclic and linear oligomers.

Development of an Atomic-Oxygen-Erosion-Resistant, Alumina-Fiber-Reinforced, Fluorinated Polybenzoxazine Composite for Low-Earth Orbital Applications. Polymers (Basel) 2022; 15:polym15010112. [PMID: 36616462 PMCID: PMC9824667 DOI: 10.3390/polym15010112] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/24/2022] [Revised: 12/21/2022] [Accepted: 12/22/2022] [Indexed: 12/29/2022] Open
Abstract
An atomic-oxygen-erosion-resistant fluorinated benzoxazine resin and composite were developed. The benzoxazine resin, abbreviated as “BAF-oda-fu,” consists of four benzoxazine rings, and was synthesized from bisphenol AF (BAF), 4,4′-oxydianiline (oda), furfurylamine (fu), and paraformaldehyde. The resin was characterized by infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). An analysis of the solvent-washed product showed a technical grade purity (>95%) and a yield of approximately 85%. Subsequent polymerization of the resin was successfully performed by heating step-wise and opening the benzoxazine rings to form a crosslinked network. Thermal analyses showed a melting temperature of 115 °C and polymerization temperature of 238 °C, both being characteristic values of benzoxazine monomers. The benzoxazine resin was also blended with polyoctahedral sisesquoxane (POSS) and reinforced with alumina fibers. The Tg of the resin, as determined by DMA of the composite, could reach as high as 308 °C when post-curing and the POSS additive were utilized. The low-Earth orbit atomic-oxygen erosion rate was simulated by an RF plasma asher/etcher. The atomic-oxygen resistance of poly(BAF-oda-fu) fell along an established trend line based on its fluorine content.

Abstract
The new 2,3-diphenylquinoxalin-6-amine (dpqa) was designed and synthesized through an efficient and high yield condensation process. Data from FTIR and 1H-NMR spectroscopy have been adopted to ascertain the molecular structure of benzoxazine compounds. Furthermore, the quinoxaline amine based benzoxazine (BA-dpqa) was synthesized using bisphenol-A and paraformaldehyde followed by combining different weight percentages (1, 5 and 10 wt%) of (3-glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane functionalized CNT-PbS with benzoxazine to obtain nanocomposites. The thermal and morphological properties of the quinoxaline amine based neat polybenzoxazine matrix poly(BA-dpqa) and CNT-PbS/poly(BA-dpqa) composites were analysed by XRD, TGA and SEM analysis. The values of the degradation temperature (Td) obtained for neat poly(BA-dpqa) and 10 wt% CNT-PbS/poly(BA-dpqa) composites are 414 °C and 424 °C. Furthermore, the chair yield percentage was calculated as 33% and 35% respectively. The water contact angle of polybenzoxazine gradually increased from 89° to 127° proportional to the content of CNT-PbS. Among the composites, 10 wt% CNT-PbS reinforced poly(BA-dpqa) nanocomposites possess higher dielectric constant (k = 11.0) than other composites. The pseudocapacitor nature of the prepared electrodes is demonstrated by the good electrochemical performance according to the CV curve. Also, the prepared 10 wt% CNT-PbS/poly(BA-dpqa) (637 F g-1 at 5 A g-1 and 11.8 Ω) electrode shows better capacitance and lower charge transfer resistance values than 5 wt% CNT-PbS/poly(BA-dpqa) (613 F g-1 at 5 A g-1 and 13.2 Ω) and neat poly(BA-dpqa) (105 F g-1 at 5 A g-1 and 15.6 Ω) according to the charge/discharge curves and EIS spectra. 10 wt% CNT-PbS/poly(BA-dpqa) shows 99.2% cycling efficiency even at the 2000th cycle, which indicates the good electrochemical performance of the prepared electrode.

Abstract
In this study a new type of bifunctional epoxy compound (DDSQ-EP) based on double-decker silsesquioxane (DDSQ) was synthesized by process of alkaline hydrolysis condensation of phenyltrimethoxysilane and corner capping reaction with dichloromethylvinylsilane, followed by epoxidation reaction of vinyl groups. The resultant structures were confirmed using Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry and time-of-flight mass spectrometry, respectively. The DDSQ-EP was incorporated into polybenzoxazine to obtain the PBZ/DDSQ-EP nanocomposites. The uniform dispersion of DDSQ-EP in the nanocomposites was verified by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope. The reactions occurred during the curing of the composites and were investigated using infrared spectroscopy of segmented cures. Dynamic mechanical analysis and thermal gravimetric analysis indicated that the storage modulus, glass transition temperature and thermal stability of PBZ/DDSQ-EP were increased in comparison with pure benzoxazine resins. Assessment of dielectric properties demonstrated that the dielectric permittivity and dielectric loss of polybenzoxazine decreased slightly because of the addition of DDSQ-EP.

Abstract
Four siloxane benzoxazines containing different rigid segments were successfully synthesized and characterized herein, including a benzene ring, a biphenyl, a naphthalene ring, and a diphenyl sulfone group. Different rigid segments had different effects on polymer properties. The introduction of the naphthalene ring and sulfone group considerably reduced the curing temperature of benzoxazine. Although the benzoxazine with the naphthalene ring exhibited low heat resistance, all the four samples showed a high char yield at 800°C under nitrogen atmosphere. In addition, during copolymerization with AG-80 epoxy, the introduction of epoxy promoted the curing of the benzoxazines containing the naphthalene ring and sulfone group. The heat resistance of all copolymers was considerably improved, especially for the copolymer containing the naphthalene ring, whose 5% thermal weight loss temperature ( Td5) increased from 248°C to 321°C under nitrogen atmosphere. The copolymer containing the biphenyl structure had the highest glass transition temperature, reaching 259.1°C. Copolymerization with epoxy also considerably improved the tensile strength and elongation at break of the copolymers, which were much higher than those of traditional bisphenol A-aniline based benzoxazine (BA-a). Compared with the neat benzoxazine prepared using siloxane and bisphenol A, the developed copolymers also had better tensile properties, and the copolymer containing the sulfone group showed the greatest improvement (from 49 to 69 MPa, from 3.1% to 9.12%).

Abstract
Previous studies on linear epoxy (bisphenol A epoxy) resin/benzoxazine composites showed that with the addition of epoxy (EP) resin, the resulting copolymers exhibited an increased glass transition temperature ( Tg) ( Tg reached a maximum value at a specific content), improved flexural strength, lower heat resistance, and reduced tensile strength. Herein, branched EP resin (AG-80)/benzoxazine copolymers featuring novolac (N-box) and siloxane (Si-box) chains were prepared without any external curing agent. In both systems, the EP resin endowed the copolymers with an increased crosslinking density; however, Tg continued to increase with increasing EP content. In addition, the heat resistance of the copolymers gradually enhanced. Different types of benzoxazines have various effects on the properties of copolymers. In terms of mechanical properties, AG-80/N-box copolymers exhibited brittle fracture characteristics; with increasing EP content, the flexural strength of the copolymer decreased while the tensile strength increased. AG-80/Si-box copolymers exhibited ductile fracture characteristics, with gradual increases in flexural and tensile strengths. Furthermore, with increasing EP content, the molecular chain migration ability and network homogeneity of the AG-80/N-box copolymers decreased gradually. Alternatively, in the case of the AG-80/Si-box copolymers, the molecular chain migration ability remained unchanged and network homogeneity improved. Hence, the developed copolymers can be used as resin matrices for the fabrication of advanced composites.

Abstract
AbstractHere, we proposed an approach to develop magnetic chalcone based benzoxazine using different contents of magnetite nanoparticles. A chalcone containing benzoxazine was prepared from 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1-phenylprop-2-en-1-one), stearyl amine and paraformaldehyde through Mannich condensation reaction in a cosolvent of ethanol/toluene (1/1)(v/v). The chemical structure of the prepared benzoxazine monomer was confirmed by FTIR and 1H NMR. Both monomer and monomer mixed with different contents of magnetite were exposed to UV irradiation to induce dimerization via [2p + 2p] cycloaddition followed by thermal curing of oxazine moiety. The crystal structure of magnetite nanoparticles was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to examine the surface morphology of the resulted materials. The average size of magnetite nanoparticles was determined by transmission electron microscope (TEM) to be 30–40 nm. The magnetization properties of these materials were measured by vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The thermal properties of thermosets were evaluated and compared with nanocomposites using TGA and DSC. The thermosets exhibited good thermal stability and improved with increasing the magnetite contents in the feed.
