Fluorinated high-performance polymers: Poly(arylene ether)s and aromatic polyimides containing trifluoromethyl groups

Poly(ester imide)s with Low Linear Coefficients of Thermal Expansion and Low Water Uptake (VII): A Strategy to Achieve Ultra-Low Dissipation Factors at 10 GHz

In this study, a series of ester-linked tetracarboxylic dianhydrides (TCDAs) with 2,6-naphthalene-containing longitudinally extended structures consisting of different numbers of aromatic rings (NAr = 6-8) was synthesized to obtain novel modified polyimides, poly(ester imide)s (PEsIs). These TCDAs were fully compatible with the conventional manufacturing processes of conventional polyimide (PI) systems. As an example, the PEsI film obtained from the ester-linked TCDA (NAr = 8) and an ester-linked diamine achieved unprecedented outstanding dielectric properties without the support of fluorinated monomers, specifically an ultra-low dissipation factor (tan δ) of 0.00128 at a frequency of 10 GHz (50% RH and 23 °C), in addition to an extremely high glass transition temperature (Tg) of 365 °C, extremely low linear coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of 6.8 ppm K-1, suppressed water uptake (0.24%), requisite film ductility, and a low haze. Consequently, certain PEsI films developed in this study are promising candidates for heat-resistant dielectric substrates for use in 5G-compatible high-speed flexible printed circuit boards (FPCs). The chemical and physical factors denominating tan δ are also discussed.

Recent Progress in Sulfur-Containing High Refractive Index Polymers for Optical Applications

The development in the field of high refractive index materials is a crucial factor for the advancement of optical devices with advanced features such as image sensors, optical data storage, antireflective coatings, light-emitting diodes, and nanoimprinting. Sulfur plays an important role in high refractive index applications owing to its high molar refraction compared to carbon. Sulfur exists in multiple oxidation states and can exhibit various stable functional groups. Over the last few decades, sulfur-containing polymers have attracted much attention owing to their wide array of applications governed by the functional group of sulfur present in the polymer repeat unit. The interplay of refractive index and various other polymer properties contributes to successfully implementing a specific polymer material in optical applications. The focus on developing optoelectronic devices induced an ever-increasing need to integrate different functional materials to achieve the devices' full potential. Several devices that see the potential use of sulfur in high refractive index materials are reviewed in the study. Like sulfur, selenium also exhibits high molar refraction and unique chemical properties, making it an essential field of study. This review covers the research and development in the field of sulfur and selenium in different forms of functionality, focusing on the chemistry of bonding and the optical properties of the polymers containing the heteroatoms mentioned above. The strategy and rationale behind incorporating heteroatoms in a polymer matrix to produce high-refractive-index materials are also described in the present review.

Engineering the Dielectric Constants of Polymers: From Molecular to Mesoscopic Scales

Polymers are essential components of modern-day materials and are widely used in various fields. The dielectric constant, a key physical parameter, plays a fundamental role in the light-, electricity-, and magnetism-related applications of polymers, such as dielectric and electrical insulation, battery and photovoltaic fabrication, sensing and electrical contact, and signal transmission and communication. Over the past few decades, numerous efforts have been devoted to engineering the intrinsic dielectric constant of polymers, particularly by tailoring the induced and orientational polarization modes and ferroelectric domain engineering. Investigations into these methods have guided the rational design and on-demand preparation of polymers with desired dielectric constants. This review article exhaustively summarizes the dielectric constant engineering of polymers from molecular to mesoscopic scales, with emphasis on application-driven design and on-demand polymer synthesis rooted in polymer chemistry principles. Additionally, it explores the key polymer applications that can benefit from dielectric constant regulation and outlines the future prospects of this field.

Poly(arylene ether)s-Based Polymeric Membranes Applied for Water Purification in Harsh Environment Conditions: A Mini-Review

Confronting the pressing challenge of freshwater scarcity, polymeric membrane-based water treatment technology has emerged as an essential and effective approach. Poly(arylene ether)s (PAEs) polymers, a class of high-performance engineering thermoplastics, have garnered attention in recent decades as promising membrane materials for advanced water treatment approaches. The PAE-Based membranes are employed to resist the shortages of most common polymeric membranes, such as chemical instability, structural damage, membrane fouling, and shortened lifespan when deployed in harsh environments, owing to their excellent comprehensive performance. This article presents the advancements in the research of several typical PAEs, including poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK), polyethersulfone (PES), and poly(arylene ether nitrile) (PEN). Techniques for membrane formation, modification strategies, and applications in water treatment have been reviewed. The applications encompass processes for oil/water separation, desalination, and wastewater treatment, which involve the removal of heavy metal ions, dyes, oils, and other organic pollutants. The commendable performance of these membranes has been summarized in terms of corrosion resistance, high-temperature resistance, anti-fouling properties, and durability in challenging environments. In addition, several recommendations for further research aimed at developing efficient and robust PAE-based membranes are proposed.

Sulfur-Rich Polyimide/TiO2 Hybrid Materials with a Tunable Refractive Index

High refractive index (RI) polyimide/titania nanoparticle hybrid materials were synthesized and characterized in this study. The polyimide synthesis took place via the conventional polycondensation process following the preparation of poly(amic acid), and the nanoparticles were incorporated using an in situ sol-gel process. Thin films of the polyimide/titania nanoparticle hybrids were prepared by optimizing the coating conditions using a spin coater. Thermal imidization of the nanoparticle containing poly(amic acid) films on Si wafers was completed in a temperature-controlled drying oven under a N2 atmosphere. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed the successful formation of inorganic bonds as well as imide linkages, and transmission electron microscopy results show well-dispersed nanocrystalline TiO2 nanoparticles of around 5 nm in the polymer matrix. Thorough optimization of the reaction time and concentration of TiO2 precursors enabled to achieve a titania content as high as 30% (wt). The RI of the resultant hybrid materials was found to be tunable according to the titania content, while the RI increased linearly with increasing titania content. A homogeneous hybrid material with a very high RI of 1.84 at 589 nm was achieved in this work for 30% (wt) TiO2.

Bio-based Low-k Polymers at High Frequency Derived from Anethole: Synthesis and the Relationship between the Structures and the Properties

Bio-based polymers have been widely investigated as sustainable low dielectric (low-k) materials in past decades. Nevertheless, a few of the polymers with excellent comprehensive properties have been achieved to satisfy the requirements of high-frequency communication application. In this paper, two fluorinated monomers (BCB-F and 2BCB-F) have been designed and successfully prepared from biomass anethole. The thermal-cross-linkable benzocyclobutene and polyfluorobenzene groups were introduced in order to obtain low-k polymers with good comprehensive properties. A control monomer C1 was prepared from the estragole, the isomer of anethole, to study intensively the effect of structures on properties. Among the thermally cured polymers, cured BCB-F with higher fluoride content shows a comparable dielectric constant (Dk) of 2.62 and lower dielectric loss (Df) of 1.31 × 10-3 at a frequency of 10 GHz, as well as better hydrophobic properties with a water uptake of 0.18%. Such good hydrophobic properties enable it to maintain the good dielectric properties even after being soaked in boiling water for 96 h. Cured 2BCB-F with bifunctional benzocyclobutene groups displays excellent heat resistance with a high glass transition temperature (Tg) of 408 °C and a low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of 52 ppm/°C in the temperature range 30-300 °C. Cured 2BCB-F also shows good dielectric properties with a Dk of 2.61 and a Df of 2.60 × 10-3 at a frequency of 10 GHz. The good comprehensive properties reveal that the anethole-based polymers are suitable candidates as matrix or encapsulation resins for application in electronics and microelectric fields.

Recent Progress of Low Dielectric and High-Performance Polybenzoxazine-Based Composites

With the rapid advancement of intelligent electronics, big data platforms, and other cutting-edge technologies, traditional low dielectric polymer matrix composites are no longer sufficient to satisfy the application requirements of high-end electronic information materials, particularly in the realm of high integration and high-frequency, high-speed electronic communication device manufacturing. Consequently, resin-based composites with exceptional low dielectric properties have garnered unprecedented attention. In recent years, benzoxazine-based composites have piqued the interest of scholars in the fields of high-temperature-resistant, low dielectric electronic materials due to their remarkable attributes such as high strength, high modulus, high heat resistance, low curing shrinkage, low thermal expansion coefficient, and excellent flame retardancy. This article focuses on the design and development of modification of polybenzoxazine based on low dielectric polybenzoxazine modification methods. Studies on manufacturing polybenzoxazine co-polymers and benzoxazine-based nanocomposites have also been reviewed.

Merging Fluorine Incorporation and Functional Group Migration

Fluorine incorporation by concomitant fluoroalkyl radical addition to alkene or alkyne and functional group migration (FGM) represents an ingenious and robust strategy for the synthesis of structurally diverse fluorinated compounds. This account gives an overview of related studies in our group, in which three main reaction modes are discussed: 1) radical fluoroalkylative difunctionalization of unactivated alkenes via intramolecular FGM; 2) alkene difunctionalization by docking-migration process using fluoroalkyl-containing bifunctional reagents; 3) incorporation of fluoroalkyl group into C(sp3 )-H bond via consecutive hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) and FGM. Relying on these methods, a variety of trifluoromethylation and di-/mono-fluoroalkylation reactions along with the migration of cyano, heteroaryl, oximino, formyl, alkynyl, and alkenyl groups have been accomplished under mild conditions.

Design and Synthesis of Low Dielectric Poly(aryl ether ketone) from Incorporation Bulky Fluorene Groups and Regular Hydroquinone Structure

To decrease the dipole polarization rate and reduce the dielectric constant of poly(aryl ether ketone) (PAEK) resin, 1,4-di(4-fluorobenzoyl) cyclohexane (DFBCH), a weakly polarizing cyclohexane-based monomer, was designed and synthesized as the primary reactant. The bulky fluorene group was incorporated to increase the free volume of the resin, further reducing the dielectric constant. Additionally, hydroquinone with a symmetric and regular structure was utilized to enhance the molecular chain's regularity and reduce dipole relaxation, further lowering the resin's dielectric constant and dielectric loss. The PFQEKs series resins exhibited excellent thermal stability with glass transition temperature (Tg) ranging from 222 to 239 °C and 5% weight loss (Td5%) ranging from 458 to 463 °C, with different monomer ratios. As the hydroquinone content increased, the dielectric constant (Dk) and dielectric loss (Df) of the resin decreased significantly, with Dk ranging from 2.92 to 2.77 and Df ranging from 0.011 to 0.008 at 10 GHz.

Comparison of the Properties of Epoxy Resins Containing Various Trifluoromethyl Groups with Low Dielectric Constant

A series of epoxy resins containing various trifluoromethyl groups were synthesized and thermally cured with diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM) and aminophenyl sulfone (DDS). All epoxy resins exhibited excellent thermal stability with the glass transition temperatures of above 128 °C and 5% weight loss temperatures of above 300 °C. DDS-cured epoxy resins possessed higher thermal stability than that of DDM-cured epoxy resins, while DDM-cured epoxy resins showed better mechanical, dielectric, and hydrophobic properties. Additionally, DDM-cured epoxy resins with different locations and numbers of trifluoromethyl groups showed flexural strength in the range of 95.55~152.36 MPa, flexural modulus in the range of 1.71~2.65 GPa, dielectric constant in the range of 2.55~3.05, and water absorption in the range of 0.49~0.95%. These results indicate that the incorporation of trifluoromethyl pendant groups into epoxy resins can be a valid strategy to improve the dielectric and hydrophobic performance.

Polyimide/crown ether composite film with low dielectric constant and low dielectric loss for high signal transmission

Dielectric properties of polyimide (PI) are constrained by its inherent molecular structure and inter-chain packing capacities. The compromised dielectric properties of PI, however, could be rescued by introducing trifluoromethyl and forming a host-guest inclusion complex with the introduction of crown ethers (CEs). Herein, we report PI/crown ether composite films as a communication substrate that could be applied under high frequency circumstances. In this work, three kinds of bisphenol A-containing diamine (2,2'-bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)phenyl]propane, 2,2-bis[4-(2-methyl-4-aminophenoxy)phenyl]propane, and 2,2-bis[4-(2-trifluoro methyl-4-aminophenoxy)phenyl]propane) are synthesized and polymerized with 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride to prepare low-dielectric PI films by means of thermal imidization. Crown ethers are introduced into the PI with different mass fractions to obtain three series of PI films. Following the combination of trifluoromethyl into the molecular chain of PI, high frequency dielectric loss of modified PI films can be effectively reduced. The properties of these materials (especially the dielectric properties) are thoroughly explored by crown ether addition. The results show that the crown ether addition process can offer crown ethers with increased free volume of PI matrix, thus allowing them to generate a special necklace-like supramolecular structure, which makes the crown ether disperse more uniformly in the PI matrix, resulting in improved dielectric properties. Importantly, the dielectric constant and dielectric loss of the composite films at high frequencies are remarkably reduced to 2.33 and 0.00337, respectively. Therefore, these composite films are expected to find extensive use as a 5G communication substrate at high frequencies in the future.

New Insights in the Synthesis of High-Molecular-Weight Aromatic Polyamides-Improved Synthesis of Rod-like PPTA

By employing a variation of the polyamidation method using in situ silylated diamines and acid chlorides, it was possible to obtain a rod-type polyamide: poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA, a polymer used in the high-value-added material Kevlar), with a molecular weight much higher than that obtained with the classical and industrial polyamidation method. The optimization of the method has consisted of using, together with the silylating agent, a mixture of pyridine and a high-pKa tertiary amine. The research was complemented by a combination of nuclear magnetic resonance and molecular simulation studies, which determined that the improvements in molecular weight derive mainly from the formation of silylamide groups in the growing polymer.

Design and synthesis of novel poly (aryl ether ketones) containing trifluoromethyl and trifluoromethoxy groups

The high-frequency and high-speed communication in the 5 G era puts forward requirements for the dielectric properties of polymers. Introducing fluorine into poly(ary ether ketone) can improve its dielectric properties. In this work, by introducing the fluorine group strategy, we successfully designed and synthesized three novel trifluoromethyl (-CF₃) or trifluoromethoxy (-OCF₃)-containing bisphenol monomers and their F-substitution PEK-based polymers (PEK-Ins). All these PEK-Ins exhibited good thermal, mechanical and dielectric properties. The T d5% of the three polymers is all higher than 520℃. The free volume fraction of novel polymers increased from 3.75% to 5.72%. Among the three polymers, exhibited the lowest dielectric constant of the films is 2.839, and the dielectric loss is 0.0048, ascribing to the increasing free volume. The Young's modulus of the polymer film is as high as 2.9 GPa and the tensile strength is as high as 84 MPa. PEK-Ins reduced the dielectric constant by introducing a low fluorine content. This study provides a new way to design PEK to synthesize low dielectric constant polymers.

Novel Synthesis of Polyimide Foams with Aromatic and 1,6-Diaminohexane Imide Bonding

A novel type of polyimide foams (PIFs) with chemically inserted flexible aliphatic diamine (1,6-diaminohexane (HMDA)) segments was successfully synthesized and characterized in this research. The aliphatic HMDA segments were randomly incorporated in the long chain aromatic imide bonds. The obtained PIFs containing various HMDA contents (0 to 20 mol%) exhibited different morphologies such as lowered density and larger cell diameter (with higher HMDA content), and open cell ratio was increased as well. HMDA rendered flexibility to the copolymer leading to decreased rigidity. Compared to using 4,4 $\prime$ -oxydianiline (ODA) as the sole diamine source, incorporating low cost of HMDA would increase the PIF’s flexibility and improve its processibility while making the production more cost effective. Within some range of compromised thermal and mechanical properties, this proposed method could be feasible for industrial applications.

Synthesis of a Novel Rigid Semi-Alicyclic Dianhydride and Its Copolymerized Transparent Polyimide Films' Properties

A new series of colorless polyimides (CPIs) with outstanding thermal properties and mechanical properties were fabricated by the copolymerization of a novel dianhydride and 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) with 2,2′-bistrifluoromethyl benzidine (TFDB). The novel dianhydride, 10-oxo-9-phenyl-9-(trifluoromethyl)-9,10-dihydroanthracene-2,3,6,7-tetraacid dianhydride (3FPODA), possessed a rigid semi-alicyclic structure, –CF₃ and phenyl side groups, and an active carbonyl group. Benefitting from the special structure of 3FPODA, the glass transition temperatures (T_g) of the new CPIs improved from 330 °C to 377 °C, the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) decreased from 46 ppm/K to 24 ppm/K, and the tensile strength (T_S), tensile modulus (T_M), and elongation at break (E_B) increased from 84 MPa to 136 MPa, 3.2 GPa to 4.4 GPa, and 2.94% to 4.13% with the increasing amount of 3FPODA, respectively. Moreover, the active carbonyl group of the 3FPODA could enhance the CPI’s adhesive properties. These results render the new dianhydride 3FPODA an ideal candidate monomer for the fabrication of high-performance CPIs.

Molecular Design, Preparation, and Characterization of Fluoro-Containing Polyimide Ultrafine Fibrous Membranes with High Whiteness, High Thermal Stability, and Good Hydrophobicity

Polymeric ultrafine fibrous membranes (UFMs) with high thermal stability and high whiteness are highly desired in modern optoelectronic applications. A series of fluoro-containing polyimide (FPI) UFMs with high whiteness, good thermal stability, and good hydrophobicity were prepared via a one-step electrospinning procedure from the organo-soluble FPI resins derived from a fluoro-containing dianhydride, 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphthalic anhydride (6FDA), and various diamines containing either pendant trifluoromethyl (–CF3) groups or alicyclic units in the side chains. The obtained FPI UFMs, including FPI-1 from 6FDA and 3,5-diaminobenzotrifluoride (TFMDA), FPI-2 from 6FDA and 2′-trifluoromethyl-3,4′-oxydianiline (3FODA), FPI-3 from 6FDA and 1,4-bis[(4-amino-2-trifluoromethyl)phenoxy]benzene (6FAPB), FPI-4 from 4,4′-bis[(4-amino-2-trifluoromethyl)phenoxy]biphenyl (6FBAB), and FPI-5 from 6FDA and 4’-tert-butyl-cyclohexyl-3,5-diaminobenzoate (DABC) showed whiteness indices (WI) higher than 87.00 and optical reflectance values higher than 80% at the wavelength of 457 nm (R457), respectively. The FPI-5 UFM, especially, showed the highest WI of 92.88. Meanwhile, the prepared PI UFMs exhibited good hydrophobic features with water contact angles (WCA) higher than 105°. At last, the PI UFMs exhibited good thermal stability with glass transition temperatures (Tg) higher than 255 °C, and the 5% weight-loss temperatures (T5%) higher than 510 °C in nitrogen.

Ionomer Membranes Produced from Hexaarylbenzene-Based Partially Fluorinated Poly(arylene ether) Blends for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

In this study, a series of high molecular weight ionomers of hexaarylbenzene- and fluorene-based poly(arylene ether)s were synthesized conveniently through condensation and post-sulfonation modification. The use a of blending method might increase the stacking density of chains and affect the formation both of interchain and intrachain proton transfer clusters. Multiscale phase separation caused by the dissolution and compatibility differences of blend ionomer in high-boiling-point solvents was examined through analysis and simulations. The blend membranes produced in this study exhibited a high proton conductivity of 206.4 mS cm−1 at 80 °C (increased from 182.6 mS cm−1 for precursor membranes), excellent thermal resistance (decomposition temperature > 200 °C), and suitable mechanical properties with a tensile strength of 73.8−77.4 MPa. As a proton exchange membrane for fuel cell applications, it exhibits an excellent power efficiency of approximately 1.3 W cm−2. Thus, the ionomer membranes have strong potential for use in proton exchange membrane fuel cells and other electrochemical applications.

9-Trifluoromethylxanthenediols: Synthesis and Supramolecular Motifs

The synthesis of four derivatives and the single-crystal X-ray structures of six 9-trifluoromethylxanthenediols (TFXdiols) I-VI are analyzed in this work. These compounds were obtained through superacid-catalyzed condensation of dihydroxybenzenes with 1,1,1-trifluoroacetone or 2,2,2-trifluoroacetophenone. The title molecules have a convex molecular structure due to their three fused rings of the xanthene moiety. We have found that, similar to resorcinol, the configuration of the hydroxyl groups is of great relevance for the crystal packing favoring either interactions above and below their molecular plane or lateral interactions that create layers. Considering that reports of TFXdiols are very scarce, our findings contribute to a better understanding of the molecular conformation and intermolecular interactions in their crystal structures. A similar analysis was extended to a fortuitous cocrystal obtained between 9-trifluoromethyl-9-(4'-fluorophenyl)-xanthenediol and 1,4-dihydroxybenzene, showing that these structures might be used to obtain cocrystals in the future.

New fluorinated polyimides based on 1,2-bis(4-aminophenyl)-4,5-bis(4-trifluoromethylphenyl)-1H-imidazole

A new aromatic unsymmetrical diamine containing imidazolyl and trifluoromethyl groups, 1,2-bis(4-aminophenyl)-4,5-bis(4-trifluoromethylphenyl)-1H-imidazole was synthesized. A series of novel fluorinated polyimides (PIs) were prepared by polycondensation of this diamine monomer with various aromatic dianhydrides via one-step process. The resulting PIs bearing inherent viscosities of 0.45–0.61 dL/g were amorphous and readily soluble in organic polar solvents such as NMP, DMF, DMAc, THF, and CHCl3. These new PIs exhibited good thermal stability with 10% weight loss temperatures of 530–560°C and char yields of 61–65% at 800°C in nitrogen, as well as good flame retardancy with limited oxygen index value of 40.6–42.8, and outstanding hydrophobicity with the contact angle of 85.2–93.5°. Meanwhile, all the obtained PIs exhibited low water uptake of 0.30–0.53%, strong UV-vis absorption in the range of 267–310 nm in DMF solution, and their films presented high optical transparency with a cut-off wavelength in the 355–392 nm range. Except for the PI film derived from pyromellitic dianhydride, the other PI films had the tensile strength in the range of 53.2–74.1 MPa, elongation at breakage of 6–15%, and tensile modulus of 1.0–1.5 GPa, respectively.

Highly Transparent Aromatic Polyamides from Unsymmetrical Diamine with Trifluoromethyl Groups

Soluble and transparent wholly aromatic polyamides (PAs) were synthesized from an unsymmetrical diamine monomer having trifluoromethyl (CF₃) groups, 4-(4′-aminophenoxy)-3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)aniline. The monomer was polymerized with several dicarboxylic acid monomers via the Yamazaki–Higashi polycondensation method. All of the synthesized polyamides have an amorphous morphology, and they are soluble in many polar organic solvents at room temperature. Flexible and transparent films of the polyamides were prepared by solution casting and these polymer films show good optical transparencies with cut-off wavelengths of 337–367 nm and transparencies of 88%–90% at 550 nm. In addition, all the polymers were thermally stable over 400 °C and exhibited glass transition temperatures (T_g) higher than 300 °C. Unsymmetrically inserted trifluoromethyl groups on polyamides improves the solubility as well as the transparency of the polymers while maintaining good thermal properties. They also showed low refractive indices around 1.5333~1.5833 at 633 nm owing to the existence of low polarizable trifluoromethyl groups.

C1 Polymerization of Fluorinated Aryl Diazomethanes

A library of fluorinated aryl diazomethanes were polymerized using BF₃·OEt₂ as a catalyst. The polymerization of 2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorophenyl diazomethane was found to be controlled, permitted chain extensions, and facilitated access to a series of block copolymers. Moreover, the polymer chains grew in one carbon increments (so-called "C1 polymerizations") and, as such, afforded highly substituted polymers that featured aryl units pendant to every carbon atom of the backbone. The polymers were characterized using size exclusion chromatography, various spectroscopic techniques, and a series of static and dynamic contact angle measurements. Compared to less-substituted analogues that were prepared using typical C2 polymerization methodologies, the C1 fluorinated polymers were found to be more hydrophobic while maintaining a sufficient solubility to be processed into robust films.

Synthesis of novel poly(arylene ether amide) containing aliphatic ring for optical property

In this work, the monomer N, N′-bis(4-fluorobenzamide)dicyclohexyl methane (BFDCM) was synthesized successfully by 4-fluorobenzoylchloride and 4,4′-diaminodicyclohexylmethane through interfacial reaction, and then the monomer BFDCM and 1,4-benzenediol (HQ) or 4.4′-biphenol (BH) were used to prepare the novel poly(arylene ether amide) (HQ-BFDCM and BH-BFDCM) containing an aliphatic ring in the main chain by nucleophilic substitution in NMP solution. These two polymers exhibited the inherent viscosities ranging from 0.828 to 1.044 dL g−1, high glass-transition temperatures (Tg) of 214.1–235.0 °C, and weight-loss temperature (T5%) of 425.2–441.3 °C. The polymers HQ-BFDCM and BH-BFDCM could completely or partly dissolve in some polar solutions, such as NMP, DMF, and so on, and they showed moderate corrosion resistance. Additionally, the obtained polymers HQ-BFDCM and BH-BFDCM exhibited good optical property, and the optical transmittances of HQ-BFDCM and BH-BFDCM were 74% and 80% at 450 nm, respectively, which showed that they could be applied to the heat-resistant optical films.

Physical Properties of Thermally Crosslinked Fluorinated Polyimide and Its Application to a Liquid Crystal Alignment Layer

This study demonstrated the use of a thermally crosslinked polyimide (PI) for the liquid crystal (LC) alignment layer of an LC display (LCD) cell. Polyamic acid was prepared using 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA) and 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphthalic anhydride (6FDA). The 6FDA-ODA-based polyimide (PI) prepared by the thermal cyclic dehydration of the polyamic acid (PAA) was soluble in various polar solvents. After forming a thin film by mixing trifunctional epoxide [4-(oxiran-2-ylmethoxy)-N,N-bis(oxiran-2-ylmethyl)aniline] with the 6FDA-ODA-based PAA, it was confirmed that thermal curing at -110 °C caused an epoxy ring opening reaction, which could result in the formation of a networked polyimide not soluble in tetrahydrofuran. The crosslinked PI film showed a higher rigidity than the neat PI films, as measured by the elastic modulus. Furthermore, based on a dynamic mechanical analysis of the neat PI and crosslinked PI films, the glass transition temperatures (Tgs) were 217 and 339 °C, respectively, which provided further evidence of the formation of crosslinking by the addition of the epoxy reagent. After mechanical rubbing using these two PI films, an LC cell was fabricated using an anisotropic PI film as an LC alignment film. LC cells with crosslinked PI layers showed a high voltage holding ratio and low residual direct current voltage. This suggests that the crosslinked PI has good potential for use as an LC alignment layer material in advanced LCD technologies that require high performance and reliability.

Highly Proton-Conducting Membranes Based on Poly(arylene ether)s with Densely Sulfonated and Partially Fluorinated Multiphenyl for Fuel Cell Applications

Series of partially fluorinated sulfonated poly(arylene ether)s were synthesized through nucleophilic substitution polycondensation from three types of diols and superhydrophobic tetra-trifluoromethyl-substituted difluoro monomers with postsulfonation to obtain densely sulfonated ionomers. The membranes had similar ion exchange capacities of 2.92 ± 0.20 mmol g-1 and favorable mechanical properties (Young's moduli of 1.60-1.83 GPa). The membranes exhibited considerable dimensional stability (43.1-122.3% change in area and 42.1-61.5% change in thickness at 80 °C) and oxidative stability (~55.5%). The proton conductivity of the membranes, higher (174.3-301.8 mS cm-1) than that of Nafion 211 (123.8 mS cm-1), was the percent conducting volume corresponding to the water uptake. The membranes were observed to comprise isolated to tailed ionic clusters of size 15-45 nm and 3-8 nm, respectively, in transmission electron microscopy images. A fuel cell containing one such material exhibited high single-cell performance-a maximum power density of 1.32 W cm2 and current density of >1600 mA cm-2 at 0.6 V. The results indicate that the material is a candidate for proton exchange membranes in fuel cell applications.

Resin Transfer Moldable Fluorinated Phenylethynyl-Terminated Imide Oligomers with High Tg: Structure-Melt Stability Relationship

Phenylethynyl-terminated aromatic polyimides meet requirements of resin transfer molding (RTM) and exhibits high glass transition temperature (T_g) were prepared. Moreover, the relationship between the polyimide backbones structure and their melting stability was investigated. The phenylethynyl-terminated polyimides were based on 4,4′-(hexafluorosiopropylidene)-diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) and different diamines of 3,4′-oxydianiline (3,4′-ODA), m-phenylenediamine (m-PDA) and 2,2′-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzidine (TFDB) were prepared. These oligoimides exhibit excellent melting flowability with wide processing temperature window and low minimum melt viscosities (<1 Pa·s). Two of the oligoimides display good melting stability at 280–290 °C, which meet the requirements of resin transfer molding (RTM) process. After thermally cured, all resins show high glass transition temperatures (T_gs, 363–391 °C) and good tensile strength (51–66 MPa). The cure kinetics studied by the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), ¹³C nuclear magnetic resonance (¹³C NMR) characterization and density functional theory (DFT) definitely confirmed that the electron-withdrawing ability of oligoimide backbone can tremendously affect the curing reactivity of terminated phenylethynyl groups. The replacement of 3,4′-ODA units by m-PDA or TFDB units increase the electron-withdrawing ability of the backbone, which increase the curing rate of terminated phenylethynyl groups at processing temperatures, hence results in the worse melting stability.
