Amphiphilic azo polymers: Molecular engineering, self-assembly and photoresponsive properties

Photoresponsive Block Copolymer Nanostructures through Implementation of Arylazopyrazoles

Responsive nanomaterials that can undergo reversible changes in morphology are interesting for the development of functional materials that interact with and respond to their environment. Amphiphilic block copolymers are well-known for their ability to create a wide range of supramolecular nanostructures in solution. Arylazopyrazoles (AAPs) are versatile molecular photoswitches, which change their configuration and hydrophobicity upon irradiation with UV light (365 nm, Z isomer, less hydrophobic) and green light (520 nm, E isomer, more hydrophobic). In this work, photoswitchable block copolymers containing arylazopyrazole tetraethylene glycol methacrylate (AAPMA) and oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (OEGMA) forming amphiphilic POEGMA-b-PAAPMA with varying block lengths are prepared by RAFT polymerization. The photochemical properties of AAP persist in the polymers. Due to their amphiphilic structure, the polymers self-assemble into supramolecular morphologies in water. Remarkably, photoisomerization results in a reversible change in the self-assembly behavior. Specifically, spherical and cylindrical micelles are observed for POEGMA33-b-PAAPMA47 when illuminated with green or UV light during assembly. Furthermore, the morphology of assembled structures can be reversibly switched by subsequent irradiation with UV and green light.

Assembly Structure Formation in Bulk and Ultrathin Films of Poly(substituted methylene) Having an Azobenzene Side Chain

The density of the side chain introduced to a polymer main chain greatly influences the properties and functions of the polymer. This work first reports on the packing structure and properties at an interface of a poly(substituted methylene) where an azobenzene side chain is introduced at every carbon atom in the main chain (C1PAz). The structure and properties are compared with those of a conventional vinyl polymer [poly(methacrylate)] possessing an identical side-chain structure (C2PAz). The packing structure in the bulk state analyzed by X-ray measurements revealed that C1PAz adopts a highly ordered rectangular unit cell structure, whereas C2PAz shows a less ordered lamellar one. Langmuir film balance experiments indicated that both polymers with the trans-azobenzene give essentially the identical 2D side-chain occupying area on water, which agrees well with the smectic B (hexatic packing) model based on the X-ray data. Upon transfer onto a solid substrate, only C1PAz shows a conformational transformation to a spread bilayer-type layer, most probably due to conformational frustration stemming from the crowding of the side chains. This study proposes new insights into the effects of side-chain density on the self-assembly and photoreaction of azobenzene-containing polymers, which are expected to expand the possibilities of polymer design for various applications.

Self-assembly of amphiphilic asymmetric comb-like copolymers with responsive rigid side chains

Amphiphilic asymmetric comb-like copolymers (AACCs) exhibit distinct self-assembly behaviours due to their unique architecture. However, the synthetic difficulties of well-defined AACCs have prohibited a systematic understanding of the architecture-morphology relationship. In this work, we conducted dissipative particle dynamics simulations to investigate the self-assembly behaviours of AACCs with responsive rigid side chains in selective solvents. The effects of side chain length, number of branches, and spacers on the morphology of aggregates were investigated by mapping out morphology diagrams. Besides, the numbers and surface areas of aggregates clearly depicted the morphological transitions during the self-assembly process. Moreover, the rod-to-coil conformation transitions were simulated to explore the stimuli-responsive behaviour of the AACCs with responsive rigid side chains by adjusting the bond angle parameter of the rigid chains. The results indicated that without the support of the rigid chains, the assembly structure collapsed, leading to the tube-to-channelized micelles and one-compartment-to-multicompartment vesicle morphology transformations. The simulation results are consistent with earlier experimental results, which can provide theoretical guidance for assembly toward desired nanostructures.

Photoinduced deformation behavior of poly(aryl ether)s with different azobenzene groups in the side chain

Azobenzene-containing poly(aryl ether)s are a potential type of photoinduced deformable high-performance polymer. However, research on photoinduced deformation of azobenzene-containing poly(aryl ether)s focuses mainly on poly(aryl ether)s containing azobenzene groups in the main chain. In this paper, the photoinduced deformation of poly(aryl ether)s containing azobenzene groups in the side chain was studied for the first time. Two novel poly(aryl ether)s containing azobenzene groups in the side chain were synthesized, and their photoinduced isomerization behavior and photoinduced deformation behavior were studied. It could be seen that the match of the excitation luminescence to the maximum absorption peak of the azobenzene groups was more compatible, and the photoinduced motion of the polymers was faster. In addition, poly(aryl ether)s containing azobenzene groups in the side chain showed highly stable photoinduced deformation. The results of this work will be helpful for designing polymers which could be controlled by lasers of different wavelengths.

Extraction of pure component spectra from ex situ illumination UV/Vis and NMR spectroscopy

Obtaining understanding of a photochemical reaction relies on the observation, identification and quantification of the compounds involved. The photochemical properties of the individual components are of particular importance, and their determination, however, is not always trivial. This is also true for the quantitative measure on the ability to absorb light, the extinction coefficient εi if more than one species i is present and two or more species absorb light of the same wavelength. In this work, it is demonstrated how pure component spectra can be obtained with a simple combination of successive and repeated ex situ illumination, UV/Vis and NMR spectroscopy. From the complementary information accessible, the wavelength-dependent extinction coefficients of all species can be calculated yielding the pure component spectra. A comparison with published data shows excellent agreement and thus proves that this approach is highly reliable.

Sequence effect on the self-assembly of discrete amphiphilic co-oligomers with fluorene-azobenzene semirigid backbones

Sequences can have a dramatic impact on the unique properties and self-assembly in natural macromolecules, which has received increasing interest. Herein, we report a series of discrete amphiphilic co-oligomers with the same composition but different building blocks in a semirigid backbone. These sequence-defined oligomers possess two primary amine groups on the side chain of the azobenzene building block, and hence, they become amphipathic due to quaternization of the amine groups when protonated in acidic aqueous solution. These oligomer isomers assembled into different nanoparticles, including nanofibers, hollow vesicles and spherical micellar complexes, in a THF/water/HCl mixture under the same conditions. UV-vis absorption spectra, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray scattering (XRD) experiments combined with theoretical calculations reveal that the sequence-controlled co-oligomers induce different molecular packing conformations and arrangement modes of building blocks in self-assembly. Furthermore, these self-assembled nanoparticles demonstrate photoresponsive morphological transformation and fluorescence emission under UV light irradiation due to trans-to-cis photoisomerization of azobenzene. This work demonstrates that customizing functional nanoparticles can be achieved by controlling the sequence structure in synthetic co-oligomers.

Testing the Performance of the Azo-Polyimide Supramolecular Systems as Substrate for Sensors Based on Platinum Electrodes

Azo-polyimide films with supramolecular structure were obtained by casting onto glass plates a mixture based on polyamidic acid and different quantities of azochromophore, followed by thermal treatment to realize the final azo-polyimide structure. The dielectric characteristics of the supramolecular structure of polymer films were investigated by broad-band dielectric spectroscopy measurements at different temperatures and frequencies. The free-standing films proved to be flexible and tough and maintained their integrity after repeated bending. The work of adhesion at the polymer/platinum interface was calculated after the evaluation of the surface energy parameters before and after plasma treatment. Atomic force microscopy was used to image the surface morphology, the evolution of the roughness parameters, and the adhesion force between the platinum-covered tip and the polymer surface, registered at the nanoscale with the quantity of the azo dye introduced in the system. The simulation of the columnar growth of a platinum layer was made to provide information about the deposition parameters that should be used for optimal results in the deposition of platinum electrodes for sensors.

Thiacalixarene Appended Azo-based Supramolecular Systems: Self-assembly and Photo Tuning Reversible Liquid Crystalline Properties

Four new azo-based supramolecular materials containing thiacalixarene core substituted by variable alkoxy groups (TFA₁ -TFA₄ ) have been designed and synthesized for the mesomorphic and photoswitching properties. The liquid crystalline behavior were accomplished by using DSC, POM, and XRD studies. All azo-based thiacalixarene based materials with short and higher chain length display columnar hexagonal mesophase with broad temperature range. The thermal behavior of all the materials was investigated by DSC and TGA study. The structural and conformational study of the lower rim functionalized materials was confirmed by using different techniques. These thiacalixarene moulded liquid crystalline compounds shows columnar self-assembly type behavior and higher thermal stability. The introduction of bi-substituted azo-ester network towards the lower rim of thiacalixarene core has impact on the electron delocalization and liquid crystalline properties. The photoswitching properties suggested cis and trans azo-isomerization under radiation of UV light and higher thermal back relaxation time. The mesogenic behaviour of compound TFA₂ and TFA₄ were demolished by the influence of cis and trans isomerization. The structure-property correlation is studied to understand the variation in mesogenic properties with the substitution of variable alkoxy side chain.

The Impact of the Azo-Chromophore Sort on the Features of the Supramolecular Azopolyimide Films Desired to Be Used as Substrates for Flexible Electronics

High-performance supramolecular polyimide systems were synthesized via a simple and innovative approach using two types of azo-chromophores, leading to concomitant special properties: high thermostability, the ability to be processed in the form of films with high flexibility, adequate morphological features, and good structuring capacity via phase mask ultraviolet (UV) laser irradiation, induced by the presence of the azo groups (-N=N-). The dimension and the anisotropy degree of the micro/nano patterns obtained on the surface of the flexible films (determined by atomic force microscopy) depend on the azo-dye type used in the supramolecular azopolyimide synthesis, which were higher when the azo-chromophore containing a -cyano group (-C≡N) was used. The molecular dynamics method, an excellent tool for an in-depth examination of the intermolecular interactions, was used to explain the morphological aspects. Energetic, dynamic and structural parameters were calculated for the two systems containing azo-chromophores, as well as for the pristine polymer system. It was highlighted that the van der Waals forces make a major contribution to the intermolecular interactions. The results from the combination of the dynamic analysis and the concentration profile explain the better mobility of the polyimide chains with a maximum content of azo groups in the cis configuration compared to the other systems. Taking all these data into account, the surfaces of the films can be tuned as required for the proposed applications, namely as substrates for flexible electronis.

Progress on Polymers Containing Imide Rings for Advanced Technologies: A Contribution from ICMPP of the Romanian Academy

Evolving technology has posed a constantly increasing need for materials that can work well under harsh conditions such as elevated temperatures. Aromatic polyimides have a great potential for this purpose, having excellent thermal, mechanical, dielectric, and optical properties, along with good chemical resistance and high dimensional stability. In spite of their general difficulty in processing and high cost, polyimides are intensively studied for applications in many areas due to their high-end value. This article reviews the progress made on polyimide materials in the “Petru Poni” Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry (ICMPP) of the Romanian Academy during the last decade, with focus on their performance as films, matrices for nanocomposites, coatings for microelectronics and opto-electronic devices, or dielectrics for thin film capacitors.

Progress on Polymer Dielectrics for Electrostatic Capacitors Application

Polymer dielectrics are attracting increasing attention for electrical energy storage owing to their advantages of mechanical flexibility, corrosion resistance, facile processability, light weight, great reliability, and high operating voltages. However, the dielectric constants of most dielectric polymers are less than 10, which results in low energy densities and limits their applications in electrostatic capacitors for advanced electronics and electrical power systems. Therefore, intensive efforts have been placed on the development of high-energy-density polymer dielectrics. In this perspective, the most recent results on the all-organic polymer dielectrics are summarized, including molecular structure design, polymer blends, and layered structured polymers. The challenges in the field and suggestions for future research on high-energy-density polymer dielectrics are also presented.

Azobenzene-Based Solar Thermal Fuels: A Review

The energy storage mechanism of azobenzene is based on the transformation of molecular cis and trans isomerization, while NBD/QC, DHA/VHF, and fulvalene dimetal complexes realize the energy storage function by changing the molecular structure. Acting as "molecular batteries," they can exhibit excellent charging and discharging behavior by converting between trans and cis isomers or changing molecular structure upon absorption of ultraviolet light. Key properties determining the performance of STFs are stored energy, energy density, half-life, and solar energy conversion efficiency. This review is aiming to provide a comprehensive and authoritative overview on the recent advancements of azobenzene molecular photoswitch system in STFs fields, including derivatives and carbon nano-templates, which is emphasized for its attractive performance. Although the energy storage performance of Azo-STFs has already reached the level of commercial lithium batteries, the cycling capability and controllable release of energy still need to be further explored. For this, some potential solutions to the cycle performance are proposed, and the methods of azobenzene controllable energy release are summarized. Moreover, energy stored by STFs can be released in the form of mechanical energy, which in turn can also promote the release of thermal energy from STFs, implying that there could be a relationship between mechanical and thermal energy in Azo-STFs, providing a potential direction for further research on Azo-STFs.

Toward azo-linked covalent organic frameworks by developing linkage chemistry via linker exchange

Exploring new linkage chemistry for covalent organic frameworks (COFs) provides a strong driving force to promote the development of this emerging class of crystalline porous organic materials. Herein we report a strategy to synthesize COFs with azo linkage, one of the most important functional unit in materials science but having not yet been exploited as a linkage of COFs. This strategy is developed on the basis of in situ linker exchange, by which imine-linked COFs are completely transformed into azo-linked COFs (Azo-COFs). Moreover, distinct properties of Azo-COFs from their corresponding imine-linked precursors are observed, indicating unique property of Azo-COFs. This strategy provides a useful approach to develop new linkage chemistry for COFs. It also has established a synthetic method for azo-linked COFs, which not only enriches the family of COFs but also offers a platform to explore properties and applications of this class of crystalline porous conjugated polymers.

Exploring new linkage chemistry for covalent organic frameworks (COFs) provides a strong driving force to promote the development of this class porous materials. Here, the authors report a strategy to synthesize COFs with azo linkages based on an in situ linker exchange strategy which transforms imine-linked COFs into their azo-linked counterparts, and explore the unique properties of azo-linked COFs.

Host-guest complexation modulated aqueous polymerization-induced self-assembly for monodisperse hierarchical nanoflowers

This work presents a one-step synthesis of monodisperse nanoflowers by aqueous polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA), modulated by host-guest interactions. Owing to the low monomer swelling of nanoparticles restricted by host-guest complexation, hierarchical surficial micellar structures were generated at the outer surface of the vesicles, forming fractal nanoflowers with a diameter polydispersity as low as 1.01. Our method allows the straightforward synthesis of monodisperse hierarchical nanoparticles for a wide range of applications.

Polymeric nanostructures based on azobenzene and their biomedical applications: synthesis, self-assembly and stimuli-responsiveness

Amphiphilic polymers can self-assemble to form nanoparticles with different structures under suitable conditions. Polymer nanoparticles functionalized with aromatic azo groups are endowed with photo-responsive properties. In recent years, a variety of photoresponsive polymers and nanoparticles have been developed based on azobenzene, using different molecular design strategies and synthetic routes. This article reviews the progress of this rapidly developing research field, focusing on the structure, synthesis, assembly and response of photo-responsive polymer assemblies. According to the molecular structure, photo-responsive polymers can be divided into linear polymers containing azobenzene in a side chain, linear polymers containing azobenzene in the main chain, linear polymers containing azobenzene in an end group, branched polymers containing azobenzene and supramolecular polymers containing azobenzene. These systems have broad biomedical application prospects in the field of drug delivery and imaging applications.

Recent Advances in Polyallenes: Preparation, Self-Assembly, and Stimuli-Responsiveness

Polyallenes, as a typical type of reactive polymers, are of great significance and have aroused widespread interest because they contain double bonds that can be post-modified into other functionalities to afford varieties of functional materials. This Minireview firstly highlights the recent advances in the preparation of polyallenes, including preparation of helical polyallenes through directly polymerization of chiral allene monomers or helix-sense-selective polymerization (HSSP) of achiral allene monomers, synthesis of 1,2-regulated polyallenes and 2,3-regulated polyallenes via selective polymerization of allene monomers, polymerization of allene monomers catalyzed by Ni(II)-terminated poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), and so on. Then, latest progress on the self-assembly and stimuli-responses of polyallene-based diblock, ABA and ABC triblock copolymers is summarized. We hope this Minireview will inspire more interest in developing polyallenes and encourage further advances in functional materials.

Reprocessable Photodeformable Azobenzene Polymers

Photodeformable azobenzene (azo) polymers are a class of smart polymers that can efficiently convert light energy into mechanical power, holding great promise in various photoactuating applications. They are typically of crosslinked polymer networks with highly oriented azo mesogens embedded inside. Upon exposure to the light of appropriate wavelength, they experience dramatic order parameter change following the configuration change of the azo units. This could result in the generation and accumulation of the gradient microscopic photomechanical force in the crosslinked polymer networks, thus leading to their macroscopic deformation. So far, a great number of photodeformable azo polymers have been developed, including some unoriented ones showing photodeformation based on different mechanisms. Among them, photodeformable azo polymers with dynamic crosslinking networks (and some uncrosslinked ones) have aroused particular interest recently because of their obvious advantages over those with stable chemical crosslinking structures such as high recyclability and reprocessability. In this paper, I provide a detailed overview of the recent progress in such reprocessable photodeformable polymers. In addition, some challenges and perspectives are also presented.

Amphiphilic phospholipid-iodinated polymer conjugates for bioimaging

Amphiphilic phospholipid-iodinated polymer conjugates were designed and synthesized as new macromolecular probes for a highly radiopaque and biocompatible imaging technology. Bioconjugation of PEG 2000-phospholipids and iodinated polyesters by click chemistry created amphiphilic moieties with hydrophobic polyesters and hydrophilic PEG units, which allowed their self-assemblies into vesicles or spiked vesicles. More importantly, the conjugates exhibited high radiopacity and biocompatibility in in vitro X-ray and cell viability measurements. This new type of bioimaging contrast agent with a Mn value of 11 289 g mol-1 was found to have a significant X-ray signal at 3.13 mg mL-1 of iodine equivalent than baseline and no cytotoxicity after 48 hours incubation of with HEK and 3T3 cells at 20 μM (20 picomoles) concentration of conjugates per well. The potential of adopting the described macromolecular probes for bioimaging was demonstrated, which could further promote the development of a field-friendly and highly sensitive bioimaging contrast agent for point-of-care diagnostic applications.

Electrochemical Stimulation of Water-Oil Interfaces by Nonionic-Cationic Block Copolymer Systems

Variable interfacial tension could be desirable for many applications. Beyond classical stimuli like temperature, we introduce an electrochemical approach employing polymers. Hence, aqueous solutions of the nonionic-cationic block copolymer poly(ethylene oxide)₁₁₄-b-poly{[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]diisopropylmethylammonium chloride}₁₇₁ (i.e., PEO₁₁₄-b-PDPAEMA₁₇₁ with a quaternized poly(diisopropylaminoethyl methacrylate) block) were investigated by emerging drop measurements and dynamic light scattering, analyzing the PEO₁₁₄-b-qPDPAEMA₁₇₁ impact on the interfacial tension between water and n-decane and its micellar formation in the aqueous bulk phase. Potassium hexacyanoferrates (HCFs) were used as electroactive complexants for the charged block, which convert the bishydrophilic copolymer into amphiphilic species. Interestingly, ferricyanides ([Fe(CN)₆]^3-) act as stronger complexants than ferrocyanides ([Fe(CN)₆]^4-), leading to an insoluble qPDPAEMA block in the presence of ferricyanides. Hence, bulk micellization was demonstrated by light scattering. Due to their addressability, in situ redox experiments were performed to trace the interfacial tension under electrochemical control, directly utilizing a drop shape analyzer. Here, the open-circuit potential (OCP) was changed by electrolysis to vary the ratio between ferricyanides and ferrocyanides in the aqueous solution. While a chemical oxidation/reduction is feasible, also an electrochemical oxidation leads to a significant change in the interfacial tension properties. In contrast, a corresponding electrochemical reduction showed only a slight response after converting ferricyanides to ferrocyanides. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) images of the liquid/liquid interface transferred to a solid substrate showed particles that are in accordance with the diameter from light scattering experiments of the bulk phase. In conclusion, the present results could be an important step toward economic switching of interfaces suitable, e.g., for emulsion breakage.

Temperature and Photo Dual-Stimuli Responsive Block Copolymer Self-Assembly Micelles for Cellular Controlled Drug Release

To well adapt to the complicated physiological environments, it is necessary to engineer dual- and/or multi-stimuli responsive drug carriers for more effective drug release. For this, a novel temperature responsive lateral chain photosensitive block copolymer, poly[(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-N,N-dimethylacrylamide) -block-propyleneacylalkyl-4-azobenzoate] (P(NIPAM-co-DMAA)-b-PAzoHPA), is synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization. The structure is characterized by ¹ H nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry and laser light scattering gel chromatography system. The self-assembly behavior, morphology, and sizes of micelles are investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy, transmission electron microscope, and laser particle analyzer. Dual responsiveness to light and temperature is explored by ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy. The results show that the copolymer micelles take on apparent light and temperature dual responsiveness, and its lower critical solution temperature (LCST) is above 37 °C, and changes with the trans-/cis- isomerization of azobenzene structure under UV irradiation. The blank copolymers are nontoxic, whereas the paclitaxel (PTX)-loaded counterparts possessed comparable anticancer activities to free PTX, with entrapment efficiency of 83.7%. The PTX release from the PTX-loaded micelles can be mediated by changing temperature and/or light stimuli. The developed block copolymers can potentially be used for cancer therapy as drug controlled release carriers.

Fine-Tuning the Electronic Properties of Azo Chromophore-Incorporated Perylene Bisimide Dyads

Perylene bisimide (PBI) and azo-compounds are fascinating molecules with interesting optical properties. Here, we combine the two chromophores to prepare nonconjugated and conjugated stable azo-PBI dyes. The detailed structural characterization, comparison of properties, and solid-state self-assembly of the compounds are discussed. The incorporation of azo groups at the bay side of PBI led to significant changes in optical properties as compared to the model PBIs (M₁ and M₂). All new azo-PBIs showed photoinduced isomerization, which caused disaggregation and enhancement in fluorescence. The amine-incorporated azo-PBIs (3 and 6) reduced chloroauric acid into gold nanoparticles. The current study offers a simple synthetic strategy and comparison of the properties of conjugated and nonconjugated azo-PBIs, which could be useful in photoelectronic devices.

Chemical- and light-induced isomerization of the P=C bond of a 1-phosphabutadiene

Treatment of Mes*P=C(Si(CH3)3)Br with CH2=CHMgBr in the presence of Pd(0) affords 1-phosphabutadiene Mes*P=C(Si(CH3)3)–CH=CH2 (1) selectively as the Z isomer. Remarkably, treatment of Z-1 with n-BuLi (0.1 equiv.) resulted in quantitative formation of E-1. The exact role of the n-BuLi is unknown; however, it appears to be required to promote the isomerization in the absence of light. The isomerization of Z-1 to E-1 was also mediated by sunlight with the reaction mixture consisting of a ca. 1:9 ratio of Z-1 to E-1. DFT calculations were consistent with the thermodynamic favorability of the isomerization of Z-1 to E-1.

Azobenzene Functionalized "T-Type" Poly(Amide Imide)s vs. Guest-Host Systems-A Comparative Study of Structure-Property Relations

This paper describes the synthesis and characterization of new “T-type” azo poly(amide imide)s as well as guest-host systems based on the “T-type” matrices. The matrices possessed pyridine rings in a main-chain and azobenzene moieties located either between the amide or imide groups. The non-covalent polymers contained the molecularly dispersed 4-phenylazophenol or 4-[(4-methyl phenyl)diazinyl]phenol chromophores that are capable of forming intermolecular hydrogen bonds with the pyridine rings. The FTIR spectroscopy and the measurements of the thermal, optical and photoinduced optical birefringence were employed for the determination of the influence of H-bonds and the specific elements of polymer architecture on physicochemical properties. Moreover, the obtained results were compared to those described in our previous works to formulate structure-property relations that may be considered general for the class of “T-type” azo poly(amide imide)s.

In Situ Controlled Construction of a Hierarchical Supramolecular Chiral Liquid-Crystalline Polymer Assembly

Hierarchical supramolecular chiral liquid-crystalline (LC) polymer assemblies are challenging to construct in situ in a controlled manner. Now, polymerization-induced chiral self-assembly (PICSA) is reported. Hierarchical supramolecular chiral azobenzene-containing block copolymer (Azo-BCP) assemblies were constructed with π-π stacking interactions occurring in the layered structure of Azo smectic phases. The evolution of chirality from terminal alkyl chain to Azo mesogen building blocks and further induction of supramolecular chirality in LC BCP assemblies during PICSA is achieved. Morphologies such as spheres, worms, helical fibers, lamellae, and vesicles were observed. The morphological transition had a crucial effect on the chiral expression of Azo-BCP assemblies. The supramolecular chirality of Azo-BCP assemblies destroyed by 365 nm UV irradiation can be recovered by heating-cooling treatment; this dynamic reversible achiral-chiral switching can be repeated at least five times.

Self-Assembly and Photoinduced Spindle-Toroid Morphology Transition of Macromolecular Double-Brushes with Azobenzene Pendants

Asymmetric macromolecular double-brushes (MDBs) are composed of two different side chains grafted on a linear backbone, possessing distinct assembly behaviors in comparison with conventional amphiphiles, owing to the Janus architecture and combined effects of backbone and hetero double-brushes. Additionally, the introduction of unique functionalities and responsiveness into the self-assembly system of MDBs endows extra opportunities to pursue morphologic diversity and intriguing properties. Herein, we report the synthesis of Janus-like MDBs of polyacrylate-g-poly(6-(4-butyl-4'-oxyazobenzene) hexyl acrylate)/poly(ethylene oxide) (PA-g-PAzo/PEO), in which hydrophilic PEO and hydrophobic PAzo brushes were grafted using the combination of concurrent ATRP and click reaction. Due to the special Janus topology and inter/intramolecular association of pendant azobenzene groups, amphiphilic PA-g-PAzo/PEO self-assembled into multimolecular rod and spindle-like aggregates. It is interesting that a transition of spindle-toroid-spindle was observed upon the alternative irradiation between UV and visible light, which is ascribed to the trans-to-cis isomerization of azobenzene molecular brushes. To our best knowledge, this is the first time that azobenzene-containing MDBs enable the fabrication of distinctive self-assembled morphologies and photoinduced toroid formation. The controlled synthesis of MDBs with unique functionalities and subsequent development of their structure-property relationships would shed light on the design and optimization of bottlebrush-based nanomaterials.

Azoreductase-triggered fluorescent nanoprobe synthesized by RAFT-mediated polymerization-induced self-assembly for drug release

Herein, micelles loaded with doxorubicin (DOX) in situ were synthesized by polymerization-induced self-assembly. Furthermore, the DOX-loaded micelles showed release and fluorescence change, owing to azoreductase-triggered azo bond cleavage.

Design of Collective Motions from Synthetic Molecular Switches, Rotors, and Motors

Precise control over molecular movement is of fundamental and practical importance in physics, biology, and chemistry. At nanoscale, the peculiar functioning principles and the synthesis of individual molecular actuators and machines has been the subject of intense investigations and debates over the past 60 years. In this review, we focus on the design of collective motions that are achieved by integrating, in space and time, several or many of these individual mechanical units together. In particular, we provide an in-depth look at the intermolecular couplings used to physically connect a number of artificial mechanically active molecular units such as photochromic molecular switches, nanomachines based on mechanical bonds, molecular rotors, and light-powered rotary motors. We highlight the various functioning principles that can lead to their collective motion at various length scales. We also emphasize how their synchronized, or desynchronized, mechanical behavior can lead to emerging functional properties and to their implementation into new active devices and materials.

Polymeric Self-Assemblies Based on tetra-ortho-Substituted Azobenzene as Visible Light Responsive Nanocarriers

Most of reported polymeric light-responsive nanocarriers make use of UV light to trigger morphological changes and the subsequent release of encapsulated cargoes. Moving from UV- to visible-responsive units is interesting for the potential biomedical applications of these materials. Herein we report the synthesis by ring opening polymerization (ROP) of a series of amphiphilic diblock copolymers, into which either UV or visible responsive azobenzenes have been introduced via copper(I) catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC). These copolymers are able to self-assemble into spherical micelles or vesicles when dispersed in water. The study of the response of the self-assemblies upon UV (365 nm) or visible (530 or 625 nm) light irradiation has been studied by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Cryogenic Transmission Electron Microscopy (Cryo-TEM), and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) studies. Encapsulation of Nile Red, in micelles and vesicles, and Rhodamine B, in vesicles, and its light-stimulated release has been studied by fluorescence spectroscopy and confocal microscopy. Appreciable morphological changes have been induced with green light, and the subsequent release of encapsulated cargoes upon green light irradiation has been confirmed.

Solar-Thermal Energy Conversion and Storage Using Photoresponsive Azobenzene-Containing Polymers

Photoswitchable compounds are promising materials for solar-thermal energy conversion and storage. In particular, photoresponsive azobenzene-containing compounds are proposed as materials for solar-thermal fuels. In this feature article, solar-thermal fuels based on azobenzene-containing polymers (azopolymers) are reviewed. The mechanism of azopolymer-based solar-thermal fuels is introduced, and computer simulations and experimental results on azopolymer-based solar-thermal fuels are highlighted. Different types of azopolymers such as linear azopolymers, 2D azopolymers, and conjugated azopolymers are addressed. The advantages and limitations of these azopolymers for solar-thermal energy conversion and storage, along with the remaining challenges of azopolymer-based solar-thermal fuels, are discussed.
