Abstract
DESIGN A single-center (university-setting), prospective, longitudinal, split-mouth, single-blind, randomized controlled clinical trial investigated peri-implant parameters of bone-level implants restored with either screw-retained prostheses connected directly to the implants or with intermediate abutments over a 3-year period. The study adhered to the ethical principles of the Helsinki Declaration and the CONSORT guidelines. Ethical approval was granted, and the trial was registered at Clinicaltrials.gov . CASE SELECTION Participants included were over 18 years of age, had a plaque index below 25%, and were missing at least two adjacent teeth, allowing for rehabilitation with screw-retained fixed partial prostheses over two implants and 2-4 prosthetic units. Exclusion criteria included long-term use of medications affecting bone metabolism, smoking more than 10 cigarettes per day, history of local radiotherapy, untreated periodontitis, and the need for rehabilitation in the anterior sextant of the maxilla. The primary clinical outcome was marginal bone loss (MBL), while secondary outcomes included probing pocket depth (PPD), plaque index (PI), bleeding on probing (BOP), and patient-reported outcomes (PROs). STUDY TIMELINE The study schedule included a screening (visit 1), implant surgery (visit 2), stage-two 8 weeks post-surgery (visit 3), impressions taken 4 weeks post stage-two (visit 4), baseline standardized radiograph (visit 5), followed by 6-month (visit 6), 12-month (visit 7), and 36-month (visit 8) follow-up visits. DATA ANALYSIS Descriptive statistics and quantitative measures included means, standard deviations (SDs), minimum and maximum values, and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Clinical parameters (six sites per implant) measured were MBL, PPD, PI, and BOP. Paired t tests were utilized for intragroup comparisons across different time points and intergroup comparisons at each time point. PROs at 36 months were compared using Student's t test. The alpha significance level was set at 0.05. RESULTS The study included 36 patients (72 implants), with two not completing the follow-up due to death and relocation. No implants showed signs of inflammation or mobility. Mean interproximal bone level (IBL) at baseline was 0.13 mm ± 0.15 mm for the control group and 0.10 ± 0.13 mm for the test group. At the 36-month follow-up, mean IBL was 0.13 ± 0.18 mm for the control group and 0.20 ± 0.24 mm for the test group, with no significant differences (F(1, 32) = 1.06; p > 0.05). Clinical parameters (PPD, BOP, PI) at 36 months showed no significant differences between groups. Minor complications occurred in 6.7% of the control group and 5.3% of the test group. PROs indicated no significant differences in general satisfaction, esthetics, comfort, phonetics, and masticatory function between the groups. CONCLUSIONS After a 36-month follow-up, bone-level implants restored with CAD/CAM prostheses directly connected to the implants displayed similar clinical outcomes, PROs, and marginal bone level changes as those restored with intermediate standardized abutments.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Dental implants are frequently preferred method for oral rehabilitation all over the world. The incidence of various complications such as incorrect prosthesis, peri-implant mucositis, and peri-implantitis is high; premature loss of implants is encountered due to osteointegration process not being completed for some unexplained reasons. However, there is no study in the literature examining the nonfunctional period of implants. Closure screws of different implant companies have different designs like surface properties, and areas, where closure screws sit, are important reservoirs for microorganism colonization. Our study aims to evaluate the inflammatory response, epithelial maturation, and epithelial-connective tissue interaction around closure screws. METHODS For this purpose, 52 implants belonging to five different implant companies were included in the study. Tissues removed over the cover screw during fitting of healing caps were used as biopsy material and for epithelial proliferation Ki-67, for epithelium-connective tissue interaction Syndecan-1, and for macrophage activation CD-68 expressions were evaluated by immunohistochemical analysis. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyzes were performed to evaluate the presence of gap between the implant and the cover screw. RESULTS As a result of our study, intensity of subepithelial inflammation between groups wasn't statistically different. Differences in CD-68 and Syndecan-1 levels were obtained at the lamina propria level. H score of CD-68 was statistically significantly different in epithelium (p = 0.032), and H score of Syndecan-1 was different in lamina propria (p = 0.022). There wasn't a statistically significant difference between the groups for Ki-67 (p = 0.151). CONCLUSION Our study results indicate that in addition to the implant surface morphology, the design of the closure screws is important in the inflammatory response and epithelial maturation that develops during wound healing. Although the inflammatory response is required for healing, osteointegration, and implant survival, further investigation is needed to investigate the relationship between initial neck resorption and closure screws with radiographic and microbiological examinations.

Abstract
In this study, a recently reported Ti-based metallic glass (MG), without any toxic element, but with a significant amount of metalloid (Si-Ge-B, 18 atom %) and minor soft element (Sn, 2 atom %), was produced in ribbon form using conventional single-roller melt-spinning. The produced Ti60Zr20Si8Ge7B3Sn2 ribbons were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction to confirm their amorphous structure, and their corrosion properties were further investigated by open-circuit potential and cyclic polarization tests. The ribbon's surface was functionalized by tannic acid, a natural plant-based polyphenol, to enhance its performance in terms of corrosion prevention and antimicrobial efficacy. These properties can potentially be exploited in the premucosal parts of dental implants (abutments). The Folin and Ciocalteu test was used for the quantification of tannic acid (TA) grafted on the ribbon surface and of its redox activity. Fluorescent microscopy and ζ-potential measurements were used to confirm the presence of TA on the surfaces of the ribbons. The cytocompatibility evaluation (indirect and direct) of TA-functionalized Ti60Zr20Si8Ge7B3Sn2 MG ribbons toward primary human gingival fibroblast demonstrated that no significant differences in cell viability were detected between the functionalized and as-produced (control) MG ribbons. Finally, the antibacterial investigation of TA-functionalized samples against Staphylococcus aureus demonstrated the specimens' antimicrobial properties, shown by scanning electron microscopy images after 24 h, presenting a few single colonies remaining on their surfaces. The thickness of bacterial aggregations (biofilm-like) that were formed on the surface of the as-produced samples reduced from 3.5 to 1.5 μm.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Although the combined use of chemical and electrochemical decontamination protocols can completely remove contaminants from the surfaces of one-time used healing abutments (HAs), their effectiveness in multiple-used HAs remains unknown. We aimed to investigate the effect of reused HAs frequency on the implant-HA contact surface area, micro-gap, microleakage, and surface topography following chemical and combined chemical and electrochemical decontamination protocols. METHODS Ninety bone level titanium implants were assembled with 90 bone level HAs, in which 80 contaminated HA samples were collected from human participants. The retrieved HAs were randomly divided into two groups according to the cleaning protocol: ultrasonication with 5.25% NaOCl solution for 15 min and steam autoclaving (group I); ultrasonication with 5.25% NaOCl solution for 15 min, followed by electrochemical cleaning and steam autoclaving (group II). The control group (group III) comprised 10 new unused HAs. The cleaning protocol was applied after each insertion as follows: (a) single-use and cleaning, (b) double-use and double cleaning cycles, (c) triple-use and triple cleaning cycles, and (d) more than triple-use and more than triple cleaning cycles. The contact surface area and micro-gap were assessed with micro-computed tomography scanning technique, microleakage test using 2% methylene blue staining, surface morphology with scanning electron microscopy, and surface elemental composition with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis. RESULTS Group Id exhibited the smallest contact surface area. The values of the micro-gap volumes and microleakage were significantly different (p < 0.001) in the descending order of Id > Ic > Ib > IId > Ia, IIa, and III. Morphological evaluation of Groups IIa, IIb, and IIc revealed that residual biological debris was optimally removed without altering their surface properties. CONCLUSIONS Chemical and electrochemical decontamination protocols are more effective than NaOCl cleaning methods, particularly for multiple consecutive uses with better decontamination levels, which decreases micro-gap volume and microleakage without surface alterations. Although the use of combined decontamination protocols for the contact surface area at the implant-HA interface showed comparable results with the control, change in the contact surface area was observed following the NaOCl cleaning methods. Therefore, titanium HA reuse can be considered in multiple times, if they are cleaned and sterilized using combined chemical and electrochemical decontamination protocols.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this randomized clinical trial was to evaluate the effect of diode laser photobiomodulation (PBM) on post-surgical healing, inflammation and implant stability. METHODS Forty dental implants were inserted into 13 patients. The implants were randomly divided into two groups. The test group (PBM+) underwent two sessions of PBM (combined diode laser of 630 and 808 nm), the first of which after surgery, and the second, 7 days after the surgical procedure. The control group (PBM-) received simulated laser treatment. The implant stability quotient (ISQ) was determined immediately after the surgical procedure, and 7 days, 4 and 8 weeks later. Post-surgical inflammation was assessed following the criteria described by Bloemen and Cols. Healing was calculated using the healing index (HI). RESULTS No differences were found in terms of the mean values of implant stability between the test and control groups over time. Only two of the implants (18.2%) from the PBM- group were classified with the maximum healing index (HI = 5), whereas in the PBM+ group, nine implants (45%) were classified with the aforementioned index (P < 0.0001). Using the logistic regression, it was determined that the non-application of the laser in the PBM- group caused an OR of 4.333 times of presenting inflammation (IC95% 1.150-16.323; P = 0.030). CONCLUSIONS The application of 808 nm infra-red laser for bone tissue, and 630 nm for mucosal tissue in two sessions is considered to be an effective way of reducing inflammation and improving early healing. More studies are needed to confirm these results.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES In both elective surgeries and aviation, a reduction of complications can be expected by paying attention to the so-called human factors. Checklists are a well-known way to overcome some of these problems. We aimed to evaluate the current evidence regarding the use of checklists in implant dentistry. METHODS An electronic literature search was conducted in the following databases: CINHAL, Medline, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library until March 2022. Based on the results and additional literature, a preliminary checklist for surgical implant therapy was designed. RESULTS Three publications dealing with dental implants and checklists were identified. One dealt with the use of a checklist in implant dentistry and was described as a quality assessment study. The remaining two studies offered suggestions for checklists based on literature research and expert opinion. CONCLUSIONS Based on our results, the evidence for the use of checklists in dental implantology is extremely low. Considering the great potential, it can be stated that there is a need to catch up. While creating a new implant checklist, we took care of meeting the criteria for high-quality checklists. Future controlled studies will help to place it on a broad foundation. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Checklists are a well-known way to prevent complications. They are especially established in aviation, but many surgical specialties and anesthesia adopt this successful concept. As implantology has become one of the fastest-growing areas of dentistry, it is imperative that checklists become an integral part of it.

Abstract
The microbial leakage at the implant-abutment interface (IAI) is one cause of peri-implant infection that puts long-term implant stability at risk. The present study compared two types of Morse taper implants in terms of sealing performance at the implanthealing abutment interface. Three implant systems, one of which exhibited a partial face-contact design (TSO) and the other two a line-contact design (TSM and BLT), were analyzed in vitro using two quantitative implant leakage measuring techniques: air-injection pressure measurement test and microbial examination. An in-house-developed device was used to determine implant leakage by recording the initial drop in pressure while injecting air through the implant. The microbial examination measured the absorbances of culture mediums in which the inoculated implants were contained. Significant difference was found between the partial face- and line-contact groups (p<0.001). Both tests revealed that partial face-contact implants are more prone to leakage than line-contact implants.

Abstract
The objective of this study is to evaluate, in vitro, the microleakage of bacteria of 3 different implant connections for a period of 14 days. 60 dental implants (AoN) (n = 20) were distinguished into three groups, accordingly to the type of connection: External Hexagon (EH), Internal Hexagon (IH), and Cone Morse (CM) connection. All implants were inserted and fixed on sterile special vinyl support. Ten fixtures for each group were inoculated in the internal platform with 1.0 μL of Streptococcus oralis (SO) and the other ten with the same amount of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA). The penetration of bacterial suspension into the surrounding solution was determined by the observation of the turbidity of the broth. Five implants for each sub-group were randomly observed at SEM, to verify the correct fitting of the abutments. Considering the total of the samples analyzed, CM showed significantly lower bacterial contamination, with respect to IH. In particular, bacterial contamination was found in 45%, 55%, and 20% of EH, IH, and CM, respectively. Analyzing results for the type of inoculated bacteria, P. aeruginosa showed a higher ability to contaminate all the connections, with respect to S. oralis.
